A Conversation About Our Broken Foster Care System. 

An estimated 90 percent of foster care children have experienced a traumatic event, with nearly half reporting exposure to four or more types of trauma.

Given the high level of complex trauma faced by foster children, post-traumatic stress disorder is at a rate nearly 5 times higher than the general adult population. 

In today’s episode, we talk with two mothers who adopted children from our foster care system. Leashia, who is also our co-host, adopted her son from foster care at the age of 7. Jeanna adopted three children, twin girls at birth and a boy (unrelated to the twin girls) at the age of 6.
 
 Leashia and Jeanna discuss the challenges that adoptive and foster parents face with children with complex developmental trauma, and how the current mental health and foster care systems are not equipped to address the needs of these families and children.
