Great horror anthology of true stories, not overloaded with ads.

Love this podcast, always excited for new content.

The stories are good, but the fictional framing character is pretty awful (sorry Rainn Wilson fans). The host, Payne Lindsey, is so flat that when he interrupts for an ad break, he erases all the tension that the narrator has been building. I love true horror, but this podcast has too many annoying features for me to stick with it.

Very enjoyable, edge of your seat

So close to being good.This podcast has realistic scary stories (like the type you might find, and have already read, on reddit) supposedly told by the people who experienced them. In the universe of the podcast/the window dressing to make it slightly longer, Rainn Wilson is trying to portray a video rental store owner who is playing you the tapes. Payne is also there, out of universe, giving commentary. These two hosts are the problem.One, Payne doesn't need to exist. It doesn't make sense in the fiction of the podcast, and he doesn't add anything. He just interjects a variation of "this is a scary scenario... or is it?" which comes off as really insulting in certain scenarios. "She thought he was being creepy, but maybe she was just overreacting?" I don't think that's necessarily his intent, considering he seems to add these soundbites without listening to the stories. At best, it interrupts a good story, at worst, it invalidates the storyteller's scary experience. Two, Rainn Wilson's character is not developed at all. He just says quirky things without having an overall character arc or any sense of continuity. One episode he's naive on a dating site, the next he's married, etc. Rainn's bumpers on the story often have nothing to do with it and make it seem like he hasn't heard any of them. Considering the listener has to spend so much time with this character at the beginning and end, it should at least be someone you want to know about. Cecil Palmer, Elvira, even Robert Stack are good examples of narrators who are as intriguing as the stories they tell. Rainn's monologues are awkward and cringey because it's just a bunch of discordant ideas of quirkiness, not a fully developed, realistic, weird person.This could be saved with a single, well developed host character, potentially visited by other strange people who deliver or borrow the tapes, and maybe a B story about maintaining the rental place. Or it could just be a straight up narration of creepy real life stories, of which there are plenty of on youtube. I still listen to it for the stories, but it's embarrassing to play for others.

Wilson is annoying AF. Stories are excellent.

First group of episodes were really great, it faltered a bit in more recent episodes, but I enjoy the concept. It was a great road trip listen!

When I first listened to this podcast, I was kinda blown away. I'm not new to the horror genre, I'm a big fan of horror movies and books and games and used to be a fan of creepypastas or other online horror stories (got kinda tired of creepypastas over the years tbh) but THIS?? Damn. Even as a veteran of scary stories, I had to pause some episodes when i was listening late at night because i got too spooked. I think it's not only the 'true' factor of these stories but that they are told by the person who experienced them. You can really hear how they felt at the moment of their stories and it adds so many layers of fright. It's also unexpectedly poignant at times, when people talk about the aftermath of their experiences, what happened after the horrible thing, how they put it in perspective years down the line. As someone who loves horror and occasional true crime but hates the exploitative nature of some of that content, this podcast really delivers that ‘true horror’ experience. Some favorites are : ‘Told a Serial Killer’ from episode 2, ‘What Was She Planning?’ from episode 3, ‘Camp Counselor Golden Boy ’ from episode 9, and ‘The Danger’ from episode 13.

Great podcast. Took so long to start the new season. I wish they can get rid of the Terry carnation part. After awhile it's kind of anyonning. Also, this is FICTION podcast . The stories told here are not true !!! Cause for some reason , there are people who believe the stories to be true. It's that good.
