Imposter syndrome is when you worry that others will find out you’re a fraud, an impostor, who’s not intelligent, competent, talented, or interesting enough. You’re convinced that you’re unworthy of your accomplishment, position, or accolade. You feel like a fake and will be found out.
Here are some thoughts of a person who believes he or she is an imposter:
Who am I to be doing this? What will people think?I don’t belong here.I don’t deserve this promotion. What are they going to say? They’re going to find out that I’m really not who they think I am.
How can Imposter syndrome affect you?
-Doubt the validity of your achievements-You have chronic self-doubt -You fear failure-You push yourself too hard-You need to be in control-You talk yourself out of celebrating accomplishment-You don’t like to ask for help
In preparing for this episode, I found a good article by Melody Wilding. The imposter syndrome has now been categorized into 5 sub types by Dr. Valerie Young. Dr. Young wrote a book called: The Secret Thoughts of Successful Women: Why Capable People Suffer From the Imposter Syndrome and How to Thrive in Spite of it.
1. The Perfectionist
2. The Super Woman/Man
3. The Natural Genius
4. The Soloist
5. The Expert
