This week on Serial Hobbyist I talk about the idea that hobbies aren't easy. They require work and effort. This is sort of a continuation from last week's episode about the lazy mindset and how we recommend a hobby to someone without overwhelming them. This week, the focus is more about the simple fact that doing something requires effort. At first we can be excited about the hobbies that we've chosen, and that excitement is what gives us the energy to take action, but as that initial excitement wains the hobby might soon become boring.

I find hobbies very similar to video games in some respects. When you start a new game, you're at level one, things are easy, rewards are often, and everything is new. When you start to progress the difficult ramps up, rewards become less frequent, and you find yourself in the same familiar situations and locations. This is true about hobbies too.

I think to overcome this, to really become good at picking up new hobbies without letting them get the best of you, you have to do research up front. Learn what it's going to cost (both time and money) before you get involved in the hobby. By learning, even just a little bit about the thing you want to do, you're better prepared with what to expect when that initial excitement does start to fade away.
