Inventors 2024 was a huge success

0:03

this year , may 29th to 31st

0:05

in large part to the attendees

0:08

, but also to our sponsors

0:10

, and today we're featuring one of those sponsors

0:13

Google Startups . Now

0:15

, google's got a lot of different programs that

0:17

they offer entrepreneurs and startups

0:19

and in this interview , we're going to dive in

0:21

and learn about some of those . Sit

0:24

back , relax . Welcome to Shift

0:26

. Alright

0:45

, ladies and gentlemen , welcome to Shift . Today , my

0:47

guest is Iran Karimeyan from Google

0:49

Startups . How are you , iran ?

0:51

I'm so good . Thanks for inviting me

0:53

, john , excited to be here .

0:54

Well , it's so nice to have you guys involved and

0:56

I'll tell you when we had a colleague

0:59

that introduced me one of our technology development advisors

1:01

, pej , in Calgary here and

1:03

you've been such a pleasure

1:06

to work with .

1:06

Oh , thank you , and I agree . I echo

1:09

that sentiment . I

1:12

feel like you've been so easy to work with and there's been so many great conversations and

1:15

opportunities that have come out of this , so

1:17

this has been awesome .

1:18

That's great . Well , I'm glad you know , and that's really you

1:20

know . Inventures is all about kind of bringing

1:22

the system together and bringing all

1:24

of the supports , the innovators , entrepreneurs

1:26

. Today , on the final day of InVentures , we have , I

1:28

think , close to 200 high school students joining us

1:31

.

1:31

Amazing .

1:31

Yeah , and the work you do with Google

1:33

Startups . Why don't we flesh that out

1:35

?

1:46

Tell me a little bit about what

1:48

that's like and what the work involves . Absolutely so , in my role , I am

1:50

the head of our startup and accelerator efforts across Canada

1:52

at Google Canada . I say on any given day , I'm doing

1:55

one of three things . The main thing that I work on is our accelerator programs . These

1:58

are called our Google for Startups Accelerator Programs . We run five of them over the course

2:00

of the year . All five are available

2:02

to Canadian founders of

2:06

the year . All five are available to Canadian founders and really what we look for are

2:08

super high potential technology focused companies that are building with artificial

2:10

intelligence or machine learning , who

2:13

are a little bit more further along , have an established

2:15

business , have customer sales traction growth

2:17

and are really ready to go to the next

2:20

level using technology

2:23

. We

2:26

have been so fortunate to work with over 100

2:28

Canadian companies since we started these programs

2:30

in 2020 . And actually I

2:32

have applications open right now

2:34

for our next Canada class

2:37

. So if there are any startups

2:39

that are listening to this who fit that bill

2:41

and who would like to learn more , I definitely

2:43

encourage you to check it out . Just

2:45

Google Google for Startups Accelerator Canada

2:47

. It'll take you to our program page

2:49

. All the details are there , including my

2:52

team's email address . You can always email us with

2:54

any questions as well .

2:55

Cool , okay , so then they'd fill up an application form

2:58

.

2:58

Yeah , exactly , it's a pretty lengthy

3:00

application form , so please do give yourself some time

3:02

to complete it . But

3:09

if you have any questions , more than welcome to reach out to our team . And really our mission

3:11

is quite simple . It's just to bring to really empower Canadian startups using

3:13

the best of Google through our programs

3:16

, our people , our products and our technology

3:18

, the program , of course , being the Accelerator

3:20

program itself . Our people

3:22

you know we've mobilized over 500

3:25

plus folks internally and

3:27

externally who act as mentors

3:29

, speakers , advisors that can help

3:31

with all sorts of business

3:33

challenges . So , of course , we're a technical

3:35

first program . We have a ton of technical experts

3:38

but , you know , related

3:40

to topics such as sales , growth

3:43

, marketing , people in leadership

3:45

, okrs and goal settings , really

3:47

, you know , we can support on all sides

3:50

of the business .

3:51

So sorry . So when a company is accepted into

3:54

the accelerator program , you've got all of those

3:56

services that can help them out with that .

3:58

Absolutely yeah . So it's a 10 week program

4:00

and so every week has a different

4:02

sort of focus and area

4:04

of focus of the business that

4:06

we dive into . But

4:08

really we're there to support

4:11

with everything . So

4:13

for companies that are

4:15

looking to adopt Google

4:18

Cloud and use those services , we

4:20

also have a really robust credit

4:22

package that we offer companies that are

4:24

in the program . So it's about

4:26

$200,000 USD over the course

4:29

of two years and

4:31

if you're an AI first company , it's $350,000

4:34

USD over the course of two years . So

4:36

the credits , paired

4:38

with the mentorship and the guidance and just having access

4:40

to people at Google , really

4:43

can go quite a long way and is super powerful

4:45

. And what's also awesome is that you know

4:47

, after the 10 weeks is done , we

4:49

don't say goodbye to you . You know we

4:51

continue the relationship . All

4:53

of our founders roll into our alumni

4:55

community where they receive ongoing access

4:57

to Google mentors , ongoing access

5:00

to exclusive product offerings , you

5:03

know special events and

5:10

just really we use it as a way to just build out case studies . So once we graduate , it's

5:13

like now let's work together on different partnerships

5:15

and find ways to really showcase the

5:17

incredible work that these startups have done while they're

5:19

in the program with us Well , it's really forging

5:21

a long-term relationship ?

5:22

It is yes .

5:24

We are committed until the very end

5:26

. So for as long as the startup wants

5:28

to engage , we are more than happy

5:30

to engage with them as well . And the mentorship piece

5:32

is pretty powerful , because just knowing that

5:35

at any time on any day

5:37

you have any sort of problem or challenge or something

5:39

breaks and you can schedule time with a Google

5:41

expert to help you resolve it

5:44

, that's pretty powerful .

5:44

Yeah , no kidding . Now , when

5:47

you think about all

5:49

of what you guys are offering and then you

5:51

think about some of the other service providers , like Alberta

5:53

Innovates and maybe the regional innovation

5:55

networks we have and Calgary Innovation

5:58

Coalition , Edmonton Regional Innovation Network

6:00

, is there a way that all

6:02

of these systems in a much

6:04

larger ecosystem can work together

6:06

? Do you see opportunity for that ?

6:08

Oh , absolutely yeah , we have a ton

6:10

of partners that we work with across

6:13

the country and we

6:16

have a lot of , you know , community contributing

6:19

relationships as well . I think Canada

6:21

is a small ecosystem . There's

6:24

definitely room for every

6:26

service and every program and every offering

6:29

and I think it's all very complimentary

6:31

. So I think the value that

6:33

a different organization can bring could

6:36

be very different than the value that we can bring through

6:38

our programs . You know , some organizations

6:41

provide funding and

6:43

, you know , take equity . Our focus

6:45

we are an equity-free program . Our focus

6:47

is really on providing that technical support

6:50

, that technical enablement , access to

6:52

our network and just

6:54

really helping unlock those technical challenges

6:56

that you have .

6:58

Now with the Accelerator program we have going in

7:00

Canada with you leading that . Is there

7:02

a similar thing in the States and in Europe

7:04

?

7:05

Yes , yes , so our Accelerator

7:07

programs are global . We are

7:09

in there's 19 programs running

7:11

across the world , I

7:14

believe . We are in 22 regions with

7:17

19 programs , as I mentioned . So

7:19

every region has slightly

7:21

different qualifications

7:24

. The program looks slightly different , but

7:27

the mission is the same . So bringing the best

7:29

of Google to startups in

7:32

these local communities and

7:34

really , just , you know , doing what we can to

7:36

support the enablement , the growth and

7:39

the technology adoption that

7:41

they have .

7:42

Yeah , Now do you see opportunity ? Or has there

7:44

been examples of past opportunity

7:46

where , say , a graduate of a Google

7:49

accelerator program in one jurisdiction

7:51

starts partnering with a startup

7:53

alumni in another jurisdiction ? Have you seen that

7:56

yet ?

7:57

We have made a lot of introductions

7:59

to startups across programs

8:01

. Actually , just yesterday my

8:04

colleagues in Korea reached out saying

8:06

we have a startup that's in our program

8:08

right now . They're looking to come

8:11

to Canada , to come to Toronto specifically

8:14

for Collision in a few weeks and looking to

8:16

connect with some Canadian founders . So we're

8:18

always making those connections . Has

8:20

an actual partnership formed ? I'm not sure

8:22

, but it's a global community

8:24

so as much as we can help

8:27

support founders from

8:29

any region , we're trying to enable that .

8:31

Well , iran , I'm going to ask you the same question next

8:34

year at InVentures 2025 , because I'm

8:36

hoping you guys come back , because you've been fantastic

8:39

.

8:39

Yeah , I want to . Alberta is great

8:42

. Calgary has been awesome . I'm just truly

8:44

blown away by all the innovation here

8:46

and the access to resources

8:48

and really just I think the biggest

8:51

takeaway is that there's true

8:53

long-term vision in terms

8:55

of

8:57

how the ecosystem can continue to thrive , and

9:00

so I'm really excited . I think there's a ton of opportunity

9:02

and I'm looking forward to doing more in

9:05

Calgary .

9:06

Well , you know what ? Let me just expand on

9:08

that and put words in your mouth . But in Alberta

9:10

.

9:10

In Alberta .

9:11

yes , so the activity , the adventures

9:13

, takes place in Calgary but it's Alberta-wide

9:16

, so that innovation ecosystem is quite

9:18

comprehensive and quite powerful and I think we hit

9:20

above our weight . I think that's the

9:22

expression , and you know there's an

9:24

opportunity for our ecosystem to

9:26

continue to coalesce

9:28

, and then you know the Googles

9:30

and other organizations to come

9:33

in and start expanding on that . I

9:35

think there's some really great opportunity and I hope we

9:37

can continue to flesh that

9:39

out For sure . Yeah Well , thank you very

9:41

much for joining us and give me

9:43

your final thoughts on Adventures 22

9:46

and 4 , because this is your first time here and

9:48

you guys were sponsors this year and thank you very

9:50

much for that . But what were your impressions ?

9:53

You know it is my first year at Adventures

9:55

. I've been to many of these conferences and

9:57

I wasn't really sure what to expect

10:00

. But being here and just you

10:02

know , meeting so many wonderful

10:04

technology startups , so many ecosystem

10:07

players and partners that are doing really great work

10:09

, I'm just really blown away by

10:12

the quality and

10:14

just the care and

10:16

really excited for , just you know , what's continuing

10:18

to come out of Alberta as

10:21

a whole . So I'm excited

10:23

. I think you know there's a lot of great stuff happening

10:25

here and I oversee all

10:27

of Canada , but I've just , you know , being here

10:29

on the ground in Calgary

10:32

, you know , interacting with so many

10:34

Alberta-based companies and organizations

10:36

. I'm just really blown away by

10:38

what's happening and really excited to continue

10:40

doing more here .

10:41

Well , thank you very much for your time . I appreciate it .

10:43

Thank you so much .
