While Emmeline received a good education, attending an all-girls school and being expected to conform to social norms, she rebelled against conventional women's roles. At the age of 14 a meeting of women's rights activists sparked a lifelong passion in her to fight for women's freedom, and she would later claim that it was on that day she became a suffragist. As one after another of the proposed feminist bills were defeated in parliament, Pankhurst was inspired to turn to extreme actions. While she was the figurehead of the suffragette movement, it advocated some controversial tactics such as arson, violent protest, and hunger strikes. Even today there is still debate about the effectiveness of her extreme strategies, but her work is recognized as a crucial element in achieving women's suffrage in Britain. Her mantle was taken up by her daughters and granddaughter, with her legacy still very much alive today.Members Reviews:Could not listwnI'm sure the book is great but I couldn't listen to it because of the narrators voice, was really looking forward to this such a shameloved itA really good book, it was a great insight. however the reader is a little excitable.A book all should read/hearIt says a lot about a book that I felt so inspired and in awe at it, despite the performance. The voice was too "posh" and dropped at the end of sentences too much, imo. Nevertheless, I found myself getting lost in the story and realising with force just what the women of history have done for us and just how much we have strayed from the course of true equality.I would thoroughly recommend this book. If I could force schools to study it, I would. It's a story we all need to remember and honour.Contact me for any questions: inforeq17@gmail.com
