2:57
a midweek bedtime story for you. Tonight,
3:07
I'm going to be reading part two of
3:10
My Father's Dragon, which
3:12
I started last Wednesday. And
3:16
that is the final part of the story,
3:18
so it's a two-parter. We
3:20
finished the story tonight. So,
3:24
if you'd like to hear the whole story, then
3:27
maybe you want to go back to last
3:29
week's episode, My Father's
3:31
Dragon, part one. But
3:33
if you're just looking to go to sleep while
3:36
I read, then just relax

5:12
as I said, tonight is
5:15
part two of My

Father's Dragon by Ruth
5:20
Stiles Gannett. This
5:23
is a delightfully whimsical story to read. And
5:27
if you wanna hear the whole story, you can just queue
5:29
up last week's, last
5:33
Wednesday's episode, and
5:36
then queue this one up right after it to hear the
5:38
whole story in its entirety. But
5:43
tonight we will be finishing the story. And
5:47
where we left off was
5:49
chapter five. I believe,
5:52
so we're moving on to chapter six. Chapter
5:55
five is right after Mr.
5:57
Elmer Elevator. escapes
6:00
some tigers on
6:03
his way to go save the dragon. So
6:07
now we follow Elmer Elevator as his
6:10
journey continues into
6:12
the wild island. So
6:17
tonight I hope you can sleep soundly
6:19

6:22
by Ruth Styles Ganet. Now

6:32
yourself melt into your bed. Get
6:36
real comfortable. Close
6:38
your eyes and
6:41
let me read to you. Chapter
6:58
6 My Father
7:00
Meets a Rhinoceros My
7:05
father soon found a trail leading away from
7:07
the clearing. All sorts
7:09
of animals might be using it too, but
7:12
he decided to follow the trail no matter what
7:14
he meant because it might lead to the
7:16
dragon. He
7:18
kept a sharp lookout in front and behind
7:20
and went on. Just
7:24
as he was feeling quite safe, he
7:26
came around a curve right behind two wild
7:28
boars. One
7:31
of them was saying to the other, do
7:33
you know that the tortoises thought they
7:36
saw a monkey carrying his sick grandmother
7:38
to the doctors last night? The monkey's
7:40
grandmother died a week ago, so
7:43
they must have seen something else. I
7:45
wonder what it was. I
7:50
told you that there was an invasion of Pho, said the
7:52
other boar, and I intend to find
7:54
out what it is. I
7:56
simply can't stand invasions. Neem
8:00
either, said a tiny little voice. I
8:03
mean, me neither. And
8:05
my father knew that the mouse was there too. Well,
8:10
said the first boar, you search
8:12
the trail up this way to the dragon. I'll
8:15
go back down to the other way, through
8:17
the big clearing, and we'll send mouse to watch
8:19
the ocean rocks in case the invasion should decide
8:21
to go away before we find it. My
8:27
father hid behind a mahogany tree just in time, and the
8:29
first boar walked right past him. My
8:33
father waited for the other boar to get a head start on
8:35
him, but he didn't
8:38
wait very long because he knew that when the first
8:40
boar saw the tigers chewing gum in
8:42
the clearing, he'd be even more suspicious.
8:49
Soon the trail crossed a little brook, and my father, who
8:52
by this time was very close to me, was
8:55
very thirsty, stopped to get a drink of water. He
8:59
still had on his rubber boots, so
9:01
he waited into a little pool of water and
9:04
was stooping down when something quite sharp picked him
9:06
up by the seat of the pants and
9:08
shook him very hard. Don't
9:12
you know that's my private weeping pool,
9:14
said a deep angry voice. My
9:19
father couldn't see who was talking because he was
9:21
hanging in the air right over the pool, but
9:24
he said, oh no, I'm
9:26
so sorry. I didn't
9:28
know that everybody had a private weeping
9:31
pool. Everybody
9:34
doesn't, said the angry voice, but
9:37
I do because I have such a big thing to weep
9:39
about, and I drown everybody
9:41
I find using my weeping pool. With
9:46
that, the animal tossed my father up and down
9:48
over the water. What
9:52
is it that you weep about
9:55
so much? Asked my father, trying
9:58
to get his breath. and
10:00
he thought over all the things he had in his pack. Oh,
10:05
I have many things to weep about, but
10:07
the biggest thing is the color of my tusk. My
10:12
father squirmed every which way trying to see the
10:14
tusk, but it was through
10:16
the seat of his pants where he couldn't possibly see it.
10:20
When I was a young rhinoceros, my
10:23
tusk was pearly white, said the animal,
10:26
and then my father knew that he was hanging
10:28
by the seat of his pants from a rhinoceros'
10:31
tusk. But
10:33
it has turned to nasty yellow-gray in my
10:35
old age, and I find it
10:37
very ugly. You
10:40
see, everything else about me is ugly, but
10:43
when I had a beautiful tusk, I
10:45
didn't worry so much about the rest. Now
10:49
that my tusk is ugly too, I
10:51
can't sleep nights just thinking about how completely
10:53
ugly I am, and
10:55
I weep all the time. But
10:59
why should I be telling you these things? I
11:01
caught you using my pool, and now I'm going
11:04
to drown you. Oh,
11:09
wait a minute, rhinoceros, said my father.
11:11
I have some things
11:13
that will make your tusk all white and beautiful
11:15
again. Just let me
11:17
down, and I'll give them to you. The
11:22
rhinoceros, said him. You do? I
11:25
can hardly believe it. Why? I'm so excited. He
11:30
put my father down and danced around in a circle while
11:32
my father got out the tube of toothpaste and the toothbrush.
11:34
Now, said my father, just move your tusk a little
11:39
nearer, please, and
11:42
I'll show you how to begin. My father wet
11:44
the brush in the pool,
11:49
squeezed on a dab of toothpaste, and scrubbed very hard
11:52
in one tiny spot. Then
11:56
he told the rhinoceros to wash it off, and
11:59
when the pool was calm again, I was very happy. He told
12:01
the rhinoceros to look in the water and see
12:03
how white the little spot was. It
12:08
was hard to see him in the dim light of the jungle, but
12:11
sure enough, the spot shone pearly
12:13
white, just like new. The
12:18
rhinoceros was so pleased that he grabbed
12:20
the toothbrush and began scrubbing violently, forgetting
12:23
all about my father. Just
12:27
then, my father heard hoof steps, and
12:30
he jumped behind the rhinoceros. It
12:34
was the boar coming back from the big clearing
12:36
when the tigers were chewing gum. The
12:40
boar looked at the rhinoceros and
12:42
at the toothbrush and at the tube
12:44
of toothpaste, and then he
12:46
scratched his ear on a tree. Tell
12:50
me, rhinoceros, he said. Where
12:52
did you get that fine tube of
12:54
toothpaste and that toothbrush? Too
12:58
busy, said the rhinoceros, and
13:01
he went on brushing as hard as he could. The
13:06
boar sniffed angrily and trotted down the
13:08
trail toward the dragon, muttering
13:10
to himself. Very
13:12
suspicious. Tigers too
13:15
busy chewing gum. Rhinoceros
13:17
too busy brushing his tusk. Must
13:20
get hold of that invasion. Don't
13:23
like it one bit, not one bit. It's
13:26
upsetting everybody terribly. Wonder
13:29
what it's doing here, anyway. Chapter
13:37
7 My
13:39
Father Meets a Lion My
13:44
father waved goodbye to the rhinoceros, who
13:46
was much too busy to notice. Got
13:49
a drink farther down the brook and
13:51
waded back to the trail. He
13:55
hadn't gone very far when he heard an angry
13:57
animal roaring. Ding
13:59
blasted. had told you
14:01
not to go blackberrying yesterday. Won't
14:04
you ever learn? What will
14:06
your mother say?" My
14:11
father crept along and peered into his small
14:13
clearing just ahead. A line
14:16
was prancing about, clawing at his mane,
14:19
which was all snarled and full of blackberry
14:21
twigs. The
14:25
more he clawed, the worse it became,
14:27
and the madder he grew, and the more
14:29
he yelled at himself because it was himself
14:32
he was yelling at all the time. My
14:37
father could see that the trail went through the
14:39
clearing, so he decided to
14:41
crawl around the edge in the underbrush and
14:43
not disturb the lion. He
14:47
crawled and crawled, and the yelling
14:49
grew louder and louder. Just
14:51
as he was about to reach the trail on the other
14:53
side, the yelling suddenly stopped.
14:57
My father looked around and saw the lion glaring
15:00
at him. The
15:02
lion charged and skidded to a stop a
15:04
few inches away. Who
15:10
are you? The lion yelled at my father.
15:14
My name is Elmer Elevator. Where
15:18
do you think you're going? I'm
15:21
going home, said my father.
15:23
That's what you think, said
15:25
the lion. Ordinarily,
15:28
I'd save you for afternoon tea, but
15:31
I happen to be upset enough and hungry enough to
15:33
eat you right now. And
15:37
he picked up my father in his front paws
15:39
to feel how fat he was. My
15:44
father said, oh please lion,
15:46
before you eat me, tell
15:48
me why you are so particularly upset today.
15:53
It's my main, said the lion, as
15:55
he was figuring how many bites a little boy would
15:57
make. You see what
15:59
a dread pitiful mess it is, and
16:02
I don't seem to be able to do anything about it. My
16:06
mother is coming over on the dragon
16:08
this afternoon, and if she sees me
16:10
this way, I'm afraid she'll stop my
16:12
allowance. She
16:14
can't stand messy manes, and
16:17
I'm going to eat you now, so I won't
16:19
make any difference to you." Oh,
16:22
wait a minute, said my father, and
16:25
I'll give you just the things you need to make
16:27
your mane all tidy and beautiful. I have
16:30
them here in my pack. You
16:34
do, said the lion. Well,
16:36
give them to me, and perhaps
16:38
I'll save you for afternoon tea after all.
16:42
And he put my father down on the ground. My
16:48
father opened the pack and took out the
16:51
comb and brush and the seven hair ribbons
16:53
of different colors. Look,
16:55
he said, I'll show you what to
16:57
do on your forelock where you
16:59
can watch me. First,
17:02
you brush a while, and then you
17:04
comb, and then you brush again
17:06
until all the twigs and snarls are gone. Then
17:10
you divide it up in three and braid
17:12
it like this and tie a ribbon
17:14
around the end. As
17:19
my father was doing this, the
17:21
lion watched very carefully and
17:23
began to look much happier. When
17:28
my father tied on the ribbon, he
17:30
was all smiles. Oh,
17:33
that's wonderful, really wonderful, said the
17:35
lion. Let me
17:37
have the comb and brush and see if I
17:39
can do it. So
17:42
my father gave him the comb and brush
17:44
and the lion began busily grooming his mane.
17:47
As a matter of fact, he was
17:49
so busy that he didn't even know when
17:52
my father left. Chapter
17:59
8 My father meets
18:01
a gorilla. My
18:05
father was very hungry, so
18:07
he sat down under a baby banyan tree
18:09
on the side of the trail and ate
18:12
four tangerines. He
18:15
wanted to eat eight or ten, but
18:17
he only had thirteen left, and it
18:19
might be a long time before he could get more. He
18:24
packed away all the peels and
18:26
was about to get up when he heard the
18:28
familiar voices of the boars. I
18:32
wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen
18:34
them with my own eyes, but
18:37
wait and see for yourself. All
18:39
the tigers are sitting around chewing gum to beat
18:41
the band. Old
18:44
Rhinoceros is so busy brushing his tusk, he
18:46
doesn't even look around to see who's going
18:49
by. And they're
18:51
all so busy, they won't even talk
18:53
to me. Horse
18:57
feathers, said the other boar, now
19:00
very close to my father. They'll
19:03
talk to me. I'm going to
19:05
get to the bottom of this if it's the
19:07
last thing I do. The
19:11
voices passed my father and went around a
19:13
curb, and he hurried on
19:15
because he knew how much more upset the boars
19:18
would be when they saw the lion's
19:20
mane tied up in hair ribbons. Before
19:25
long, my father came to a crossroads, and he stopped
19:27
to read the signs. Straight
19:32
ahead, an arrow pointed to the beginning of
19:34
the river, to the left
19:36
of the ocean rocks, and to
19:38
the right to the dragon fairy. My
19:43
father was reading all these signs when he heard
19:45
paw steps and ducked behind the signpost. A
19:50
beautiful lioness paraded past and turned down
19:52
toward the clearings. Although
19:56
she could have seen my father if she had bothered to glance. at
20:00
the post. She was too
20:02
much occupied, looking dignified to see anything but
20:04
the tip of her own nose. It
20:09
was the lion's mother, of course, and
20:11
that, thought my father, must mean that the dragon
20:13
was on this side of the river. He
20:18
hurried on, but it was farther away than he
20:20
had judged. He
20:22
finally came to the riverbank in the late
20:24
afternoon and looked all around, but
20:27
there was no dragon anywhere in sight. He
20:30
must have gone back to the other side. My
20:35
father sat down under a palm tree
20:37
and was trying to have a good idea
20:39
when something big and black and hairy jumped
20:41
out from the tree and landed
20:43
with a loud crash at his feet. Well,
20:49
said a huge voice. Well
20:51
what, said my father, for which
20:54
he was very sorry when he looked up
20:56
and discovered he was talking to an enormous
20:58
and very fierce gorilla. Well,
21:02
explain yourself, said the gorilla. I'll
21:05
give you till ten to tell me your
21:07
name, business, your age, and
21:09
what's in that pack. And
21:12
he began counting to ten as fast as
21:14
he could. My
21:20
father didn't even have time to say
21:22
elm or elevator, explore, before
21:24
the gorilla interrupted. Too
21:27
slow. I'll twist your
21:29
arms the way I twist that dragon's wings, and
21:32
then we'll see if you can't hurry up a bit. He
21:36
grabbed my father's arms, one
21:38
on each fist, and was about to twist
21:40
them when he suddenly let go
21:42
and began scratching his chest with both hands.
21:47
Blast those fleas, he raged. They
21:50
won't give you a moment's peace. And
21:53
the worst of it is, you can't even get a good
21:55
look at them. Rosie,
21:58
Rhoda, Rachel. Ruthie, Ruby,
22:01
Roberta, come here and
22:04
get rid of this flea on my chest. It's
22:06
driving me crazy. Six
22:10
little monkeys tumbled out of the palm tree,
22:13
dashed to the gorilla, and began
22:15
combing the hair on his chest. Well,
22:19
said the gorilla, it's still there. We're
22:23
looking, we're looking, said the
22:25
six little monkeys. But they're
22:27
awfully hard to see, you know. I
22:31
know, said the gorilla. But hurry,
22:34
I've got work to do. And
22:36
he winked at my father. Oh,
22:40
gorilla, said my father. In my
22:43
knobsack, I have six magnifying glasses.
22:46
They'd be just a thing for hunting fleas. My
22:50
father unpacked them and gave one to
22:52
Rosie, one to Rhoda, one
22:55
to Rachel, one to Ruthie, one
22:57
to Ruby, and one to Roberta. Why,
23:01
they're miraculous, said the six
23:03
little monkeys. It's
23:06
easy to see the fleas now. Only
23:09
there are hundreds of them. And
23:11
they went on hunting frantically. A
23:16
moment later, many more monkeys
23:18
appeared out of a nearby clump of
23:20
mangroves and began crowding around to
23:22
get a look at the fleas through the
23:24
magnifying glasses. They
23:27
completely surrounded the gorilla, and he could not see
23:29
my father, nor did he remember to twist
23:32
his arms. Chapter
23:38
9 My father makes a
23:41
bridge. My
23:46
father walked back and forth along the bay, trying to think
23:48
of some way to cross the river. He
23:52
found a high flagpole with a rope going over to the other side.
23:57
The rope went through a loop to the top of the pole. and
24:00
then down the pole and around a
24:02
large crank. A
24:05
sign on the crank said, The
24:07
summoned dragon yanked the crank, for
24:10
poor disorderly conduct to a gorilla. From
24:16
what the cat had told my father, he knew
24:18
that the other end of the rope was tied
24:20
around the dragon's neck, and
24:22
he felt sorrier than ever for the poor dragon.
24:27
If he were on this side, the gorilla
24:29
would twist his wings until it hurt so
24:31
much that he'd have to fly to the
24:33
other side. If
24:36
he were on the other side, the gorilla
24:38
would crank the rope until the dragon would either
24:40
choke to death or fly back to
24:42
this side. What
24:45
a life for a baby dragon. My
24:50
father knew that if he called to the dragon
24:52
to come across the river, the
24:54
gorilla would surely hear him, so
24:57
he thought about climbing the pole and going across on
24:59
the rope. The
25:02
pole was very high, and
25:04
even if he could get to the top without
25:06
being seen, he'd have to go
25:08
all the way across hand over hand. The
25:13
river was very muddy, and all
25:15
sorts of unfriendly things might live in it, but
25:19
my father could think of no other way to get
25:21
across. He
25:23
was about to start up the pole when,
25:25
despite all the noise the monkeys
25:27
were making, he heard a loud
25:29
splash behind him. He
25:33
looked all around in the water, but it was dusk
25:36
now, and he couldn't see anything there. It's
25:40
me, crocodile, said a voice to
25:42
the left. The water's
25:44
lovely, and I have such a craving
25:46
for something sweet. Won't
25:48
you come in for a swim? A
25:54
pale moon came out from behind the clouds, and
25:57
my father could see where the voice was coming from.
26:01
The crocodile's head was just peeping out of the
26:03
water. Oh,
26:06
no thank you, said my father. I
26:08
never swim after sundown, but
26:11
I do have something sweet to offer you. Perhaps
26:16
you'd like a lollipop, and
26:18
perhaps you have friends who would like lollipops,
26:21
too. Lollipop,
26:24
said the crocodile. Why,
26:27
that is a tree. How
26:29
about it, boys? A
26:33
whole chorus of voices
26:35
shouted, hoorah, lollipops. My
26:38
father counted as many as 17 crocodiles with
26:40
their heads just peeping out of the water.
26:45
That's fine, said my father, as he got
26:48
out the two dozen pink lollipops in the
26:50
rubber bands. I'll stick
26:52
one here in the bank. Lollipops
26:55
last longer if you keep them out of the water, you
26:57
know. Now one
27:00
of you can have this one. The
27:05
crocodile who had first spoken swam up
27:07
and tasted it. Delicious,
27:10
mighty delicious, he said. Now
27:14
if you don't mind, said my father, I'll
27:16
just walk along your back and fasten another
27:18
lollipop to the tip of your tail with
27:21
a rubber band. You
27:23
don't mind, do you? Oh
27:28
no, not in the leaves, said the crocodile.
27:31
Can you get your tail out of the water just a
27:33
bit, asked my father. Yes,
27:37
of course, said the crocodile, and
27:39
he lifted up his tail. Then
27:43
my father ran along his back and
27:45
fastened another lollipop with a rubber band.
27:51
Who's next, said my father, and the
27:53
second crocodile swam up and began
27:55
sucking on that lollipop. Now,
27:59
the agenda. can save a lot of time if
28:01
you just line up across the river," said my
28:03
father, and I'll be along
28:06
to give you each a lollipop." So
28:10
the crocodiles lined up right across the river
28:12
with their tails in the air, waiting
28:15
for my father to fasten on the rest of
28:17
the lollipops. The
28:20
tail of the 17th crocodile just reached the
28:22
other bay. Chapter
28:28
10. My Father
28:30
Finds the Dragon When
28:35
my father was crossing the back of the
28:37
15th crocodile with two more lollipops to go,
28:40
the noise of the monkeys suddenly stopped, and
28:43
he could hear a much bigger noise getting louder
28:46
every second. Then
28:49
he could hear seven furious tigers,
28:51
then one raging rhinoceros, and
28:54
two seething lions, and one ranting
28:56
gorilla along with countless screeching monkeys,
28:59
led by two extremely irate wild
29:02
boars, all yelling, It's
29:05
a trick, it's a trick. There's
29:07
an invasion, and it must be after
29:09
our dragon. Kill it,
29:11
kill it. The
29:13
whole crowd stampeded down the bank. As
29:19
my father was fixing the 17th lollipop
29:21
for the last crocodile, he
29:24
heard a wild boar scream, Look,
29:27
it came this way. It's
29:29
over there now, see? The
29:31
crocodiles made a bridge for it. Then
29:35
just as my father leapt onto the other bay,
29:38
one of the wild boars jumped onto the back
29:40
of the first crocodile. My
29:44
father didn't have a moment to spare. By
29:48
now the dragon realized that my father was coming
29:50
to rescue him. He
29:53
ran out of the bushes and jumped up and
29:55
down, yelling, Here I am. I'm
29:58
right here. Can you see me? Hurry,
30:01
the boar is coming over on the crocodiles
30:03
too. They're all coming over. Oh
30:07
please hurry, hurry. The
30:09
noise was simply terrific. My
30:16
father ran up to the dragon, took
30:18
out his very sharp jackknife. Steady,
30:22
old boy, steady. We'll
30:24
make it. Just stand still. He
30:27
told the dragon as he began to saw through the
30:29
big row. By
30:33
this time both boars, all seven
30:35
tigers, the two lions,
30:37
the rhinoceros, and the gorilla, along
30:40
with countless screeching monkeys, were all on
30:42
their way across the crocodiles. There
30:44
was still a lot of rope to cut through. Oh
30:49
hurry, the dragon kept saying, and
30:51
my father again told him to stand still. If
30:56
I don't think I can make it, said my father, we'll
30:59
fly over to the other side of the river, and
31:02
I can finish cutting the rope there. Suddenly
31:07
the screaming grew louder and madder, and
31:10
my father thought the animals must have crossed the
31:12
river. He
31:14
looked around and saw something which
31:16
surprised and delighted him. Partly
31:20
because he had finished his lollipop, and
31:23
partly because, as I told you
31:25
before, crocodiles are very moody and not
31:27
the least bit dependable, and
31:29
are always looking for something to eat. The
31:32
first crocodile had turned away from the bay
31:35
and started swimming down the river. The
31:40
second crocodile hadn't finished yet, so
31:43
he followed right after the first, still
31:45
sucking his lollipop. All
31:48
the rest did the same thing, one
31:50
right after the other, until they were all
31:52
swimming away in a line. The
31:56
two wild boars, the seven tigers,
31:58
the rhinoceros. The two lions, the
32:01
gorilla, along with the countless
32:03
screeching monkeys were all riding down the
32:06
middle of the river on the train
32:08
of crocodiles sucking pink lollipops, and
32:11
all yelling and screaming, and getting
32:13
their feet wet. My
32:17
father and the dragon laughed themselves weak because
32:19
it was such a silly sight. As
32:22
soon as they had recovered, my father
32:24
finished cutting the rope, and
32:27
the dragon raced around in circles and tried
32:29
to turn a somersault. He
32:32
was the most excited baby dragon that ever lived.
32:37
My father was in a hurry to fly away, and
32:40
when the dragon finally calmed down a bit, my
32:42
father climbed up onto his back. All
32:47
aboard, said the dragon, where
32:49
shall we go? We'll spend
32:51
the night on the beach,
32:55
and tomorrow we'll start on the long journey home.
32:58
So it's off to the shores of
33:00
Tangerine, shouted my father, as the dragon
33:02
soared above the dark jungle and the
33:05
muddy river, and all
33:07
the animals bellowing at them, and all
33:09
the crocodiles licking pink lollipops and grinning
33:11
wide grins. After
33:14
all, what did the crocodiles care
33:16
about a way to cross the river, and
33:19
what a fine feast they were carrying on their backs.
33:24
As my father and the dragon passed over
33:27
the ocean rocks, they heard
33:29
a tiny, excited voice scream, Bum-ka-bum-ka,
33:34
we'd read our naggin, I
33:36
mean, we need our dragon. But
33:41
my father and the dragon knew that nothing in the
33:43
world would ever make them go back to
33:45
Wild Island. The
33:48
End Thank
33:58
you for listening to Sleepy. Goodnight.
