Jule Spach served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. On his fifth bombing run out of Italy, his plan suffered a mechanical malfunction and he and his crew ditched over the Mediterranean. He was captured by the Germans and spent over a year in a prisoner of war camp.
