Jule Spach served as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II. On his fifth bombing run out of Italy, his plan suffered a mechanical malfunction and he and his crew ditched over the Mediterranean. He was captured by the Germans and spent over a year in a prisoner of war camp. After the war, he married, started a family, and served as a missionary in Brazil for 30 years.
