This is 1A. I'm Jen White. When

0:10

I say the words civic duty, what comes

0:13

to mind? For many, that means

0:15

voting. For others, it's volunteering in the

0:17

community or showing up to local government

0:19

meetings. No matter how

0:21

you choose to exercise your civic

0:23

duty, what matters most is that you're

0:25

showing up. Last month, 1A

0:28

returned to Texas as part of

0:30

our Remaking America collaboration with six

0:32

partner stations across the country, including

0:34

KUT in Austin. Remaking

0:36

America looks at how our democracy is or

0:39

is not working for all of us. As

0:41

the country gears up for another presidential

0:44

election, what role does civic duty play

0:46

in getting people involved in our democracy?

0:49

Today, we bring you a special conversation

0:51

from Rollins Theater at the Long Center

0:53

in Austin, Texas, all about what

0:55

it means to exercise your civic

0:57

duty. We were joined on

1:00

stage by Amy Stansbury, the editor-in-chief of

1:02

the Austin Common and co-author of A

1:04

Beginner's Guide to Local Government. KUT

1:07

Austin's city hall reporter, Luz

1:09

Moreno-Luzano, also joined us, and

1:12

Megan Diaz. She's a Ph.D. candidate in

1:14

political science at the University of Texas

1:16

at Austin. She studies the policies that

1:18

city governments across the country have put

1:20

in place to help integrate immigrants

1:22

into local politics. I'm

1:30

really curious to hear from each of you

1:32

how you define civic duty, what it looks

1:34

like in action, and you're like, Luz,

1:36

I'll come to you first. Sure.

1:39

For me, when I think about civic duty,

1:41

the first thing that comes to mind are

1:43

the folks who show up at city hall.

1:46

You know, the people who are commenting during

1:48

public comment, who are staying through the meeting

1:50

to hear what people have to say. But

1:52

I think the first thing

1:54

that we learn about civic duty and the first thing

1:56

that we can do as just

1:59

individuals and
