, greg Collins , substitute Teachers Lounge

0:05

. We are in wind-down

0:09

mode , so we're going to talk about

0:11

what you need to be doing

0:13

this last month

0:15

of the Substitute Teaching

0:17

School Year Substitute

0:25

Teachers Lounge

0:29

. All

0:31

right , I am going to assume

0:33

that I sound as bad as

0:36

I feel . This weekend

0:38

I refereed I guess it

0:40

was 15 volleyball

0:43

matches , so that

0:45

probably put me around maybe 1,000 people

0:47

. I then went to Rupp

0:50

Arena , which is the college basketball

0:52

arena in our area here in Kentucky

0:55

, to be part

0:57

, along with 21,000

0:59

other people , of just kind of welcoming

1:02

our new coach , mark Pope , and

1:04

I'm a bit nostalgic , as are a

1:06

lot of fans . He was on our 1996

1:09

championship team

1:11

, so we were welcoming him back as a coach . But

1:13

regardless of all

1:15

that being around that many people

1:17

I picked up a code somewhere . I

1:20

hope I sound better than I think

1:22

I sound , but either way , we'll get

1:24

through this . We're talking about what

1:26

you need to be doing this last

1:28

month of the school year . First

1:32

, just two or three quick comments about

1:34

last week's episode . No more , mr

1:36

Nice Guy . Well , I

1:39

haven't had a change of heart , but

1:41

I have had some new observances

1:44

, if that's the right word , since

1:47

that episode came out , a couple in the classroom

1:49

, a couple on the volleyball court

1:52

. I substitute taught

1:54

last week every day

1:56

, but one of the days was a half

1:58

days . I got in there and

2:01

they actually asked me if I

2:03

would mind coming in an hour early

2:05

to cover up for a teacher that

2:07

didn't get covered

2:10

. And I said sure . And as

2:12

I was walking up to the classroom I

2:15

heard a teacher who was

2:17

stepping in for me . Until I got there I

2:20

heard him telling them your

2:22

substitute teacher is downstairs right

2:24

now and he'll be right up . And

2:26

I said well , I'm right here . I walked in . Those

2:29

kids cheered for me and

2:32

it kind of embarrassed me a little bit . You

2:35

know here all this talk I've done about how

2:38

students have changed for the worst

2:40

, and here these kids are

2:42

cheering for me . And then I realized

2:44

that I was in a class of juniors and

2:46

seniors , kids that

2:49

I had known since the

2:51

sixth grade , the kids prior

2:53

. I met them prior to the COVID

2:55

break and

2:58

that was the difference in

3:00

my mind . So I stick with what I said

3:02

last week . Then to kind

3:04

of further strengthen where I'm going

3:06

with this this weekend on

3:08

the volleyball court I did mainly two

3:11

groups of students . I did

3:13

what's called 18U , which

3:15

is basically 17 and 18-year-old

3:17

players , and they were methodical

3:20

. They worked very

3:23

quickly . They hustled everywhere

3:25

they went . We played a match

3:28

that was composed of three

3:31

sets 25 , 25 , and

3:33

15 points and

3:35

we got through it in 50 minutes

3:38

and that's amazing . They

3:40

just hustled all the time . Then

3:42

I finished with 14-year-olds

3:45

, which are 13 and 14-year-olds the

3:47

middle school area and

3:49

things couldn't

3:51

have moved more slowly . When

3:54

it was their turn to serve

3:57

, they just walked back

3:59

to their position as

4:01

slow as possible , like everybody's

4:04

got to wait on me and I'm sorry

4:06

and if I've offended parents

4:09

out there of those kids , but and

4:12

these were kids that I didn't even know

4:14

, they were actually from out of state

4:16

and I'm thinking it's almost like

4:18

that COVID break messed

4:21

up everybody everywhere

4:23

in that particular age group

4:25

. I loved coaching their games

4:28

, but it got to the point if they

4:30

weren't going to hustle , I was almost ready to give

4:32

them a yellow card because when they

4:34

were working at the table keeping score

4:36

, I had to put their phones away . It's just

4:38

. It strengthens

4:41

what I said last week . I think

4:43

I'm going to stick with high school

4:45

substitute teaching because

4:48

that middle school piece is

4:50

not as much fun to me anymore

4:53

. Okay , off my soapbox . I don't

4:55

want to hit on that too much

4:57

more , because I talked about it enough last

4:59

week and everybody's entitled to their own opinion

5:01

and I want everybody out there to sub where

5:03

they want to those of you that sub

5:06

elementary school , I

5:08

admire you most because I know I can't

5:11

every time . I , you know , a couple

5:13

of elementary school kids are okay , but

5:16

when there is a group of 20 of them

5:18

all together at the same time with

5:21

their blessed , their hearts , their high-pitched

5:23

voices , their unbridled

5:26

is that the right word Energy

5:28

, it's like we're popping sugar cubes

5:30

into them all the time . I

5:32

don't know if I can handle that . I'll

5:34

stick with the high school students who

5:36

, while they could have an attitude

5:39

if they want , they are at least advanced

5:43

enough that I can have good conversations

5:46

with them All . Right now let's

5:49

talk about some things that you

5:51

want to be doing during your last month

5:53

. One at the top of the list

5:55

, no doubt about it . In fact , coincidentally

5:59

, I got a letter in the mail today from

6:01

our school system just wanting

6:03

me to check a box . Do

6:06

you plan on being a substitute teacher again

6:08

next year ? They want to know where they

6:11

are More and more

6:13

. The school that I taught

6:15

most of the time in the fall man

6:18

. Every day it was like 12 to 15

6:21

substitutes . The school I'm

6:23

teaching , mainly in the spring , is

6:25

not quite that bad , but they're getting

6:27

worse . They're running out of substitute

6:29

teachers . Very rarely

6:31

do I go in now and I'm not asked to cover for

6:33

another teacher during my planning period

6:36

, and very rarely does a

6:38

day go by that I didn't accept a job

6:40

there , that they don't call me to see if I could

6:42

come in that day . So they

6:45

want to know how to plan next year . Now

6:47

what you need to be

6:49

thinking about is how

6:51

you can do that and

6:53

how you shouldn't do that . I'm

6:55

going to start with how you shouldn't , and

6:58

it may be that even

7:01

the majority out there will

7:03

disagree with me . I'll go back

7:05

to my very first substitute

7:08

teacher day . The day

7:10

went well . I've talked about it many times

7:12

. I cut to the

7:14

end of the day and I saw the notes from

7:16

the substitute teacher the day before

7:19

and she had stapled

7:21

a business card to it . A

7:23

business card , now

7:26

, very professional , right ? You

7:29

know , there's probably two reasons I don't like them . One

7:32

is just my bias , because my

7:35

career in business was filled

7:37

up with business cards and I hated

7:39

them , so I was

7:42

not going to create business cards . Now we

7:44

do live in a world today where you can get a

7:46

whole bunch of cards for next to nothing

7:48

and they really don't look that bad

7:50

. You can design them on your computer

7:52

and they look pretty good . Here's

7:55

my feelings , and you're allowed

7:57

to disagree with me . Obviously . I

8:00

think business cards come

8:03

across as a little desperate

8:06

. I really do . If

8:09

you clip a business card to everything

8:12

in sight , first

8:14

of all business cards get

8:17

lost and you

8:20

might have your neat little email address

8:22

on there , and some teachers do

8:24

like to see that your phone number

8:26

, all that kind of thing . Here's

8:29

what I chose to do

8:31

instead , and for the most

8:33

part , I am at the top of

8:35

enough teachers' favorite

8:38

substitute list now that I usually

8:40

don't have to seek out a job . I

8:42

have enough just from them calling

8:44

me . So here's what I would do

8:47

. Everybody likes

8:49

that handwritten note . You

8:51

like receiving handwritten notes ? Business

8:55

cards are shortcuts . They are

8:57

. I'm going to do what

9:00

I can do in the quickest way possible

9:03

, especially if you don't leave any notes for the teacher

9:05

, and that's a little lazy

9:07

. I think it comes across as lazy

9:10

. Here's what I would recommend Make

9:13

sure this last month , every

9:15

substitute teacher job

9:17

you go to , you

9:19

leave some good notes . Now

9:25

, there's going to be times . I usually don't leave too many bad notes , but there will be times when

9:27

you'll need to . I would encourage you to do this just to keep the teacher reading

9:30

. You might think it's a good idea

9:32

to leave the bad notes

9:34

first and then follow them by

9:36

the good notes . There's some

9:38

teachers that if you start out too negative

9:40

, they may not even read your

9:42

whole paper . So I

9:45

think you start with the good notes

9:47

first and that

9:49

will make the teacher feel good about

9:52

your day . Close

9:54

with the more

9:56

negative notes in

9:58

such a way that they're diplomatic

10:01

. You don't just say what

10:03

happened , you say you

10:10

don't just say what happened , you say here's how I would have you know , here's what I consider

10:12

doing . Would that have been okay ? Give some ideas , make it a very

10:14

positive impression and then , the most

10:16

important part sign

10:18

your name . Make

10:20

sure your signature is readable

10:22

and put your phone

10:25

number down there . I get most

10:27

of my substitute teacher jobs from

10:30

text

10:32

messages . Now you might say well

10:34

, greg , all that's on the business card . Why

10:36

don't I just do that ? And you

10:38

answered your own question . Because

10:41

if you just throw a business card down there

10:43

sometimes they're a little busy and

10:52

I think the teacher would remember your number more if you wrote them a handwritten note they might

10:54

put it in their phone and they'll have it from that point forward

10:57

and hopefully you'll be on their substitute

10:59

teacher list that way . The

11:02

next thing is a little bit more

11:04

vague . I'll just say

11:06

it like this build

11:08

back the bridges that

11:11

you burned down . And

11:13

I say all this if you made some teachers

11:15

upset , if you made some students

11:17

upset , think about

11:19

some ways now , not artificial ways

11:21

, not hokey ways , where it's apparent

11:24

what you're doing , that you're trying to

11:26

just get them back on your side

11:29

. But don't be so stubborn

11:31

that if you had a run-in with a teacher or

11:33

run-in with a student that you don't encounter

11:36

them again , don't go out of your way . But if you encounter

11:39

them in the hallway , speak to them

11:41

. Make sure

11:43

they know that you are still

11:45

willing to talk to them at every

11:47

opportunity , especially if it's a student

11:49

you have in class . Walk

11:51

by other students first , ask

11:54

them how they're doing . If they need any help , make

11:56

sure you ask that student first

11:58

. Obviously , if you walk up to them first . They're

12:00

going to know what you're doing . So that's

12:03

what I would suggest , and

12:05

especially with teachers . Now , teachers are

12:07

adults . They might hold grudges longer

12:09

than the students do In fact I know they do

12:11

. So make

12:13

sure that you

12:16

do something for those teachers . Maybe

12:18

you bring in some donuts , not just

12:20

for the teacher you made mad , but

12:22

hand them out when that teacher

12:25

is around and make sure that you

12:27

go to that teacher and give them

12:29

a donut or whatever else . If

12:31

you see that teacher carrying

12:33

some items , asked to help them , do

12:36

whatever you

12:38

need to do to make them

12:41

realize . Okay , I realize we

12:43

didn't get off on the right foot here , but

12:46

that's in the past , let's just go from here

12:48

, okay . Okay , I might

12:50

follow this up next week with some more suggestions

12:52

. We'll see . I might have another interview , but

12:55

my voice is wearing

12:57

out . We'll call that a week and

12:59

I hope I at least planted some ideas

13:01

in your head about what

13:03

to be doing this last month . In

13:05

fact , why don't

13:08

you post some ideas

13:10

on the Substitute Teachers Lounge

13:12

Facebook group and I will

13:14

read those and include those in

13:16

next week's episode ?
