2:32

Sordin's scale contains adult themes and

2:34

violence and is not intended for

2:36

all audiences. In

3:09

case you lost, this is Sordin's

3:12

Scale, a show that

3:14

reveals that the worst monsters

3:17

are... Hold on, here it comes. Here we're gonna

3:19

hit the poster. Here we're about to do it. Here

3:21

we go. Real. Real.

3:55

Well, everyone that's seen Sordin's Scale

3:58

television is... showering

4:00

us with compliments. I mean, nobody

4:02

has anything negative to say about it

4:04

as far as I've seen. Well,

4:07

perhaps except for one little

4:09

thing. You see,

4:12

it's not easy to produce this

4:14

kind of content for you, especially

4:16

in the video realm. We

4:18

have to pack up all kinds of gear. I

4:21

mean, insane amounts of

4:23

gear, put them in

4:25

a van and then drive across the

4:27

country to wherever the victims of the

4:29

crime are and then go to their

4:31

homes, interview them. There's

4:33

a lot of people involved. There's a lot

4:35

of travel, a lot of expenses and obviously

4:39

the price to access this kind

4:41

of content is more expensive. But

4:45

I fully understand how bad

4:47

the economy is right now. I

4:50

mean, I come from a working class

4:52

background, so I understand it's really

4:55

tough out there at

4:57

the moment for most people. So

5:00

if you can't afford to support

5:02

us at the super supporter level,

5:04

we completely understand it's

5:06

not a requirement. We still

5:08

value all listeners. Even

5:12

the ones that listen for free on our

5:14

ad supported content on Spotify and Apple. But

5:17

listen, if this is the kind of content

5:19

that you value, this is the kind of content that you want

5:21

to see more of, there's

5:23

one way to do it. Head on

5:25

over to swordandscale.com and sign up

5:27

for our super supporter. Help

5:30

support independent media. Nobody

5:33

else will. It's up to you.

5:36

Or, you know, stick with the MSN's and

5:38

the NBC's and when they lie to you to

5:40

your face to sell you more medication. It's

5:43

up to you. You

5:47

get more choices and

5:49

more choices can't be a bad

5:51

thing. Some

6:11

people just know the best rate for you is

6:13

a rate based on you. With all stuff. Not

6:15

6:18

6:53

across the western edge of Florida's

6:56

Panhandle, surrounded by over 50 miles

6:58

of coastline sits the

7:00

well-known city of Pensacola.

7:04

It's a city that's mostly known for

7:06

its beautiful beaches and for attracting surfers

7:08

and camper van travelers. While

7:11

it's true that Pensacola has no shortage

7:13

of surfer bros and hipsters, the

7:16

majority of its population aren't

7:19

beach bums. Most

7:21

of the people of Pensacola are just everyday

7:24

Americans that

7:26

do what everyday Americans typically do.

7:29

They go to work. On

7:32

4pm on May 31, 2017 a 38-year-old man named

7:34

Robert Howard was planning to do just

7:41

that. Robert had just

7:43

walked out of his girlfriend's Pensacola apartment

7:46

and was planning to make an

7:48

hour-long commute to work when

7:51

he was stopped in the apartment complex's

7:53

parking lot by two women.

8:00

The two women asked Robert about a young

8:02

girl that they believed to be missing.

8:22

One of those young women was the girl's

8:24

mother, and her name

8:26

was Shantara Hurry. There

8:29

that day, Shantara contacted

8:31

her local police department

8:33

and reported her daughter

8:36

missing. When police first began looking

8:38

into the situation, they

8:40

questioned the last person to have

8:42

supposedly seen the missing girl, which

8:45

happened to be her 10-year-old brother, Emmanuel.

8:49

The woman was the first

8:52

person she had multiplied to live here.

8:56

Tell me more about that. For

8:58

me, it was a good joke. It

9:01

was just a good friend, not

9:03

just a friend, and a birth to me, and

9:05

my mother, but it was a good day. It

9:08

was a good day. I would

9:10

have said I could look near the cops

9:12

and ask them

9:15

to help her with it, and then they

9:18

would take it away. Thank

9:21

you for telling me about that. Tell

9:25

me what your sister's name

9:27

is. Naomi

9:29

Jones had recently celebrated her 12th

9:32

birthday, and she lived in a

9:34

small apartment with her mom and two younger brothers.

9:37

According to her brother Emmanuel on the

9:39

day that Naomi went missing, she

9:42

and her brothers had just finished walking

9:44

their dog. They returned

9:46

home and all three of them went inside the

9:48

apartment. But then Naomi

9:51

went back outside by herself and

9:54

didn't return. At

10:09

the time of Naomi's disappearance, Naomi and

10:11

her two younger brothers were home alone.

10:15

Little 12-year-old Naomi was looking

10:17

after her two younger brothers,

10:19

which wasn't an ideal situation,

10:22

but it was oftentimes the only option.

10:25

Naomi's mom was just 18 years old when

10:28

Naomi was born, and she

10:30

was single. To support

10:32

her kids, she worked two jobs. Usually,

10:35

hiring a nanny or finding a

10:37

relative to look after the children

10:40

wasn't an option, so

10:42

big sister Naomi picked up the slack

10:44

and took care of things while her

10:46

mom was at work. In

10:55

a lot of ways, Naomi was an

10:57

exceptional 12-year-old. According

11:19

to the adults in her life,

11:21

Naomi was caring, smart, ambitious, and

11:24

especially mature for her age. Naomi

11:27

dreamed of becoming a doctor or nurse,

11:30

and she had a mind for science.

11:34

One of her hobbies included using household

11:36

ingredients to make different forms of slime.

11:42

In the clip you're about to hear,

11:44

Naomi is creating a YouTube video and

11:47

teaching her audience how they can also

11:49

create slime. Midway

11:51

through the recording, one of her younger brothers

11:53

plays a practical joke on her by

11:56

snatching away her camera and running off with it.

12:00

made with flour.

12:04

After Naomi was reported

12:06

missing, the

12:11

Escambia County

12:14

Sheriff's Office

12:23

began their search effort, and

12:25

they clearly took this case very

12:27

seriously as they alerted

12:29

every local media station and

12:32

held several press conferences. For

12:35

police and just about anyone

12:55

who knew Naomi, there

12:58

was a detail about this case

13:00

that strongly suggested foul play, and

13:03

that Naomi wasn't

13:05

just a runaway. On

13:08

the day that Naomi went missing, she

13:10

walked out of the apartment. She

13:13

left without her cell phone.

13:16

Like most girls her age, Naomi's cell

13:18

phone was usually glued to her hand.

13:21

But on that particular day, she

13:24

just left it behind. Nobody could

13:26

say why Naomi went back outside

13:48

on her own that day. But

13:50

she clearly didn't plan to be gone

13:52

for long. If she

13:55

had, Naomi almost certainly would have taken her cell

13:57

phone with her. to

14:00

find Naomi continued, detectives

14:03

at the Escambia County Sheriff's Office

14:05

questioned a lot of people. Among

14:08

those people was Naomi's mom's ex-boyfriend,

14:12

Arthur Bruce, who was no

14:15

stranger to law enforcement. In

14:18

fact, when cops picked him up,

14:20

there was an active warrant for

14:22

his arrest. It wasn't

14:24

for anything too serious. Unfortunately,

14:29

Arthur had been previously busted

14:31

with some marijuana and

14:33

was subsequently placed on probation. Arthur

14:36

then violated that probation and a

14:38

warrant was issued for his arrest.

14:41

Nonetheless, when Arthur was

14:44

brought in for questioning, he was cooperative

14:46

and agreed to speak with detectives about

14:49

Naomi. During his

14:51

interview, Arthur echoed how strange it

14:53

was that Naomi had left without her

14:55

cell phone. Let me

14:57

tell you something. Naomi don't

15:00

know where, sir. Naomi

15:03

don't go outside like that. Naomi

15:06

like the phone. She like caprullas. She like

15:08

to be in her room. The

15:11

phone was left in the house. That

15:14

don't sound right. It just don't fucking sound right. Don't

15:16

fucking head up. Detectives

15:18

in this case had two very good

15:21

reasons to question Arthur Bruce. The

15:24

first and the most obvious

15:26

was that he was Naomi's

15:28

mom's ex and

15:30

he knew Naomi pretty well. The

15:33

second and much more concerning reason was

15:35

that despite being

15:37

the ex-boyfriend, Arthur

15:39

was still communicating with Naomi through

15:42

text messages. While

15:44

there was plenty of room for plausible

15:47

deniability, some of

15:49

Arthur's conversations with Naomi

15:51

could have been considered

15:53

inappropriate for a

15:56

grown man to have with a 12 year old girl.

16:00

My only birthday was ready to come up. And

16:02

she asked me for a pound. Space Jam joined

16:04

the Shoots. And

16:06

I went over there. Naomi texts you wanting

16:09

certain shoes. Yeah, she wanted the shoes, the

16:11

Space Jams. And I said, since

16:14

you've been good and you kept your grades up,

16:16

I said, listen to your mama, obey your

16:18

mama, follow what your mama say. And

16:21

I get you them shoes. And

16:23

she just wanted that one thing. It was

16:25

there some Space Jam joins. Arthur

16:29

asked Naomi what her shirt and

16:31

shoe sizes were. And

16:33

according to Arthur, the only reason he

16:35

asked her that question was because she

16:38

wanted those things for her birthday. This

16:40

conversation apparently led to some conflict

16:43

when Naomi's mom learned about it.

16:46

Did she text you from Naomi's

16:48

phone, getting upset with you for

16:50

you texting Naomi? Yeah,

16:52

she told me not to text Naomi. I

16:56

asked Naomi what signs she will. And

16:59

Naomi would ask a mother. And a

17:01

mother came and said, don't text. Naomi

17:03

don't want no texts. Us

17:05

no more, don't get in contact with us no

17:08

more. That's a sign. And you can see on

17:10

the text, I said, I respect that, I understand

17:12

that. I said, y'all have a good day. Bless

17:14

day, I don't want no problems. How was the

17:17

guide when we talked to Shontaris? You made it

17:19

sound like you were

17:21

reaching out to Naomi and almost

17:24

a sexual way or, you know.

17:28

Oh, Lord. And

17:30

so you see what I'm saying? Naturally,

17:33

Arthur denied the accusation that anything

17:36

he said to Naomi was meant

17:38

as a sexual advance towards her.

17:41

Interestingly, when asked what

17:44

he thought happened to Naomi, Arthur

17:47

had his own theory. Whatever

17:49

going on. What's your gut feeling? What do

17:51

you think happened?

17:53

I'm here to tell you something that shocks me. And

17:55

I wish I would have called that. I

17:57

called her the night you called me. And

18:01

first thing she said, you

18:04

want somebody to send me a dollar, I'll

18:06

just write him. What

18:08

the hell are you talking about some money right now when

18:10

your daughter miss you? We ain't

18:13

talking about no money right now. I said what's going

18:15

on when they own me? Don't worry about it. It

18:17

ain't here. I

18:19

couldn't even talk to her. I just hung the phone up. Okay.

18:22

You think Sean Terrell would hurt her own daughter? I

18:26

think that will happen, man. And

18:29

that's the soft cover up? Something

18:32

just in my bones. I just feel like it

18:34

ain't right. Because

18:36

I think the mother knows more than she knows,

18:38

man. I don't disagree

18:40

with you, but right now, right

18:42

now, Sean Terrell is just, I

18:44

mean, she's like flatline. She

18:47

don't show no emotions. There's

18:50

the CC. She got

18:52

Naomi somewhere. Arthur

18:54

seemingly suspected that Naomi's mom had

18:56

something to do with

18:59

Naomi's disappearance, which

19:01

was a theory that detectives had considered.

19:05

For a mom whose 12-year-old daughter was missing,

19:07

Sean Terrell Hurry

19:10

seemed pretty composed, and

19:13

her calm demeanor was on full

19:15

display during her many media appearances.

19:18

If Naomi is out there, if anybody is watching

19:21

that has my baby, I

19:23

just need you to bring her back

19:25

home. My number is all

19:27

over social media right now. Just

19:30

please bring my baby home. Something

19:33

else that struck detectives as strange

19:35

was the story that they got

19:37

from Naomi's brother, Emmanuel. Initially,

19:40

Emmanuel told police that when Naomi left

19:42

the apartment, he was in

19:44

his bedroom, lying down. He

19:47

claimed that he hadn't actually witnessed

19:49

Naomi walk out the door, but

19:52

he later changed his story.

19:55

So you saw her leave? Mm-hmm.

19:57

Okay. So that was when she just laid loose. I'm

19:59

glad you needed to see her again. I'm

20:02

so little here, so I'm confused. You told me

20:04

earlier that you were asleep when she left. But

20:06

now you're telling me that you heard

20:08

her tell you that she forgot something and you saw

20:10

her leave. So those are

20:12

two different things. Help me understand. How

20:15

come you told me something different? What

20:19

did Mom say about coming here? I'm

20:22

sick. Mom, talk to me. Did

20:26

she tell you anything else? Has

20:30

anybody asked you this? We're not talking about stuff

20:32

or how'd you keep speaking for a second time?

21:00

We've conducted 300 interviews, 30 search

21:02

warrants. We've gone not one mile, not two miles, but a three

21:04

mile radius. We've

21:07

checked our waterways. We've checked a lot of Facebook posts.

21:10

We've got about 200 plus tips. We've written down each one of

21:12

those tips. We do

21:14

hope that, and we pray that you guys,

21:16

the media, will put this information out, not

21:19

just locally, but regionally and then nationally, because

21:22

right at the top of the page, we're going to be looking at the

21:24

information that we're going to be using. Not

21:26

just locally, but regionally and then nationally, because right

21:28

at this point, we really do not

21:30

know what happened to Naomi. Hundreds

21:33

of volunteers came out to assist

21:35

the search effort to find Naomi.

21:38

And for nearly a week, Naomi's

21:40

family and friends anxiously

21:43

awaited for answers as

21:45

they prayed for Naomi's safe return. It

21:49

wasn't until the fifth day that

21:51

the search came to an abrupt

21:53

end when a

21:56

simple fisherman came across something

21:58

that he wouldn't soon forget. It

22:02

was on that day that the

22:04

tragic fate of 12-year-old Naomi Jones

22:07

was finally revealed.

22:25

25:17

June of 2017, 12-year-old Naomi Jones

25:19

went missing from the Aspen Village

25:21

Apartments in Pensacola, Florida, where she

25:24

lived with her mom and

25:26

two younger brothers. In

25:29

response to Naomi's disappearance, the

25:31

Escambia County Sheriff's Office launched

25:33

a massive and highly organized

25:35

search effort. After

25:37

three days of relentless searching, there

25:40

was still no sign of Naomi.

26:00

which has had over 150 volunteers from around the nation,

26:02

by the way, to come and help us in

26:04

our search for Naomi. I will

26:06

tell you the community in the nation that we are

26:09

triple checking at this point areas that

26:11

we have been over. As

26:13

the days dragged on,

26:16

Naomi's younger brothers struggled to

26:18

understand the possibility that

26:21

Naomi may never be found and

26:23

that she may never be coming

26:25

home. As for the adults in

26:27

Naomi's life, they held

26:29

on to hope that

26:33

Naomi would be found

26:47

and that she would be safely returned to her

26:49

family. As the search

26:51

for Naomi continued, detectives

27:05

assigned to the case continued asking

27:07

questions. Eventually, they ended

27:09

up speaking with a young man named

27:11

Jermaine Portis, who sometimes went by

27:13

the nickname, Man Man. At

27:29

the time of this police interview, Jermaine Portis was

27:32

23 years old and

27:34

he worked as a dishwasher and busboy

27:36

at a nearby motel. The

27:39

detectives assigned to the Naomi Jones

27:41

case were led to Jermaine through

27:43

Naomi's phone records. Your

27:45

Facebook page has a phone

27:47

number associated with it, okay? That

27:50

phone number has been texting

27:53

Naomi the missing girl. In

27:56

order to create a Facebook account, a person

27:58

needs to provide a phone number. phone

28:00

number or an email address. In

28:03

Germain's case, when he created his Facebook page,

28:05

he used a phone number, and

28:07

that phone number had recently exchanged

28:10

text messages with Naomi. Yet

28:13

Germain denied that he

28:15

knew Naomi at all, and

28:18

he couldn't explain how or

28:20

why Naomi had the phone number that

28:22

was linked to his Facebook. In

28:25

fact, Germain claimed that the phone number

28:28

wasn't even his and it belonged

28:30

to his older sister. Yeah, because

28:32

I don't know how my sister's number ended

28:34

up in her little girlfriend. I don't know.

28:37

I don't know. I don't know how that

28:39

number... Who's your sister? Aquila Quotas. How

28:41

old is Aquila Quotas? She's like 27, 20. Does

28:43

she still have that number? Yeah. Okay. So,

28:46

the last time you had access to her phone, it was like,

28:48

I don't know. I really don't like it. And if so,

28:51

and if I did, was to get her a hot phone,

28:53

it wasn't like texting their girl or

28:55

my own woman. Well, she's like, I don't even know the girl.

28:57

You know what I'm saying? I don't even know

29:00

how that number ended up in her

29:02

hot phone, period.

29:13

Germain explained that when he created his Facebook

29:15

page, he didn't have a phone, so he

29:17

just used his sister's number to set up

29:20

the account. Well,

29:22

that seemed plausible. It

29:25

still didn't explain why Naomi had that number

29:27

in her phone. So

29:30

after hearing Germain's explanation, or

29:32

rather, his lack of one, the

29:35

detectives began asking him about his

29:37

whereabouts on the day that Naomi

29:39

went missing. This

29:42

didn't go well for

29:45

Germain. Go ahead and tell

29:47

me about your day, Wednesday, the 31st,

29:50

what you did from the time you woke up. I

29:52

was broken. I was broken. Okay. What's

29:55

your schedule? What time did you go

29:58

in? I'm

30:01

going at 5am. Naomi

30:04

went missing on May 31st at around 1.30pm.

30:08

Jermaine's typical work shift was 5am

30:11

to 1pm, leaving

30:13

him plenty of time to make his way

30:15

over to Naomi's apartment. At

30:18

the same time, Jermaine couldn't even give a

30:20

straight answer as to whether he even worked

30:22

that day at all. Then

30:24

you're positive you went to work that day? I

30:29

don't know. I

30:32

don't know. But either

30:34

way to go, I just think I'm trying to get the story and

30:36

all of that. But either way to go, I

30:39

don't know Jermaine. I couldn't go

30:41

to the side night every day. I just hang

30:43

out with my friends and stuff like that. Okay,

30:47

but these kind of situations where we're talking to a

30:49

lot of different people. And generalizing,

30:52

I do the same thing every day. In

30:55

this situation, it isn't going to cut it. Maybe

30:58

I went to work, maybe I didn't. Maybe

31:01

I saw some friends, maybe

31:03

I didn't. Dumb

31:05

criminals lie about all the wrong things,

31:08

don't they? And

31:10

as far as alibis go, Jermaine's

31:12

was about as ambiguous

31:15

as you could get. The

31:17

cops don't like that, by the

31:19

way. And when they pushed

31:21

him about it, the only thing Jermaine

31:23

could say was that he never met

31:25

Naomi and he had no idea

31:27

who she even was. Unfortunately

31:30

for him, detectives

31:32

had information that suggested otherwise.

31:36

We talked to one of your neighbors and

31:38

they said that they've seen Naomi

31:42

come to your house

31:44

a few times. His

31:47

friend is new because he was

31:49

still a point finger with the same name. But

31:52

where is she? I don't

31:54

know. Nobody yet. I don't know that

31:56

I know. Only one person that- Therefore, you shouldn't say

31:58

you seen a girl come around. No, in the past

32:00

they've seen him. In

32:03

the past, I've never seen him in the past. I've

32:07

never seen the girl previous. I've never seen him. Not

32:10

only had his neighbors supposedly spotted

32:12

Naomi at Jermaine's house, but

32:15

according to detectives, another

32:17

witness placed Jermaine at Naomi's apartment

32:19

complex on the day she

32:21

went missing. There were some

32:23

people there with her

32:26

on the 31st, and

32:28

they said that man-man was

32:30

over there that morning. That's

32:34

what they said, and I wasn't. So

32:38

you're sure you were worked that day? No.

32:42

But if I wasn't, I was

32:44

not around to go. You

32:47

can explain. Yeah, okay, I went over the part with

32:49

that morning, but I didn't have anything to do with

32:51

this other parent. I can't explain, because I wasn't there.

32:53

You kind of know. You

32:56

know, I just can't get messed up

32:58

behind something that I didn't and got nothing to do

33:00

with. You know what I'm saying? So even if we

33:02

used to go farther, if y'all seen me, you know,

33:04

somebody or whatever, I didn't do nothing with

33:06

them. I didn't know what I did. Confidently,

33:10

Jermaine maintained that had nothing

33:12

to do with Naomi's disappearance and

33:15

that he had never even met her. After

33:19

a few hours of questioning and a whole

33:21

lot of denial, Jermaine

33:23

was sent home, and he

33:26

remained a potential suspect. Within

33:29

hours of Jermaine leaving the police

33:31

station, the case took

33:33

a sudden turn. Twelve-year-old

33:36

Naomi Jones had

33:39

finally been found. Naomi Jones

33:41

was found in 8 Mile Creek Monday

33:43

morning. She had been missing for five

33:45

days. The sheriff's office says based

33:47

on the preliminary autopsy, she had been killed

33:49

within the first 24 to 36 hours after her

33:52

abduction. The

33:55

area where she was found has turned into

33:57

a growing memorial. However, that

33:59

spot... is not where she was

34:01

killed according to the sheriff's office. The

34:03

sheriff would not go into detail about

34:05

how she died, only that her cause

34:08

of death is asphyxiation. Five

34:11

days after she was first reported

34:13

missing, a local

34:15

fisherman found Naomi's small and

34:17

lifeless body lying under

34:19

a bridge in a

34:21

creek about 10 miles from the apartment

34:23

complex where she lived. Naomi

34:26

was found partially submerged.

34:30

She was wearing the same tank top she

34:32

had on when she went missing, but

34:35

she was nude from the waist down. Later,

34:38

an autopsy revealed that Naomi

34:41

died of asphyxiation. The

34:44

medical examiner concluded that she had

34:46

likely been strangled to death. For

34:49

the detectives that saw and pulled

34:51

Naomi's body out of the creek,

34:54

it was a day and an

34:56

event that they will likely

34:59

never forget. At

35:24

just 12 years old, Naomi's life

35:26

had ended. All

35:28

of her aspirations and

35:31

the potential of who she could have become was

35:34

lost forever. When

35:37

the news broke, the local community

35:39

rallied behind Naomi's family, and

35:42

hundreds of people attended a vigil to

35:45

honor Naomi and support

35:47

Naomi's mom. I

35:51

would love to thank you all for coming out

35:53

today. It means the world to me to know

35:56

that every single one of you took your time

35:58

out of your day. The

36:01

search for

36:04

Naomi had ended, but now the

36:06

hunt was on to find her

36:09

killer. During

36:30

the search and throughout the investigation,

36:32

the police questioned hundreds of people,

36:35

but their best lead came when they

36:37

interviewed a young man named Robert Howard.

36:41

When Naomi's mom first learned that her daughter

36:43

was missing, she rushed home from

36:45

work and called Naomi's grandmother.

36:49

Together, the two of them began knocking

36:51

on every door in her apartment complex,

36:54

asking the residents if they'd

36:56

seen Naomi. As

36:58

they were doing this, they ran into

37:00

Robert, just as he was on

37:02

his way to work. On my way out,

37:06

I ran into, I don't know

37:08

the girl's mom name or her and another older lady,

37:11

and that's when she asked me if I'd seen her

37:13

daughter. I'm

37:15

like, well, no, ma'am, I just came out of the apartment, and she

37:17

was like, well, it's my daughter. I'm

37:19

like, well, no, ma'am, she's missing. And I

37:22

stood there and talked with them for a minute

37:24

before I left. So

37:26

you hadn't seen Naomi? Do you know who Naomi is?

37:28

Yes, I know exactly who she is. I see her.

37:31

You see her every time we're getting out of the

37:33

apartment. Her and her brothers, they

37:35

either playing with their dog, or they're on that

37:37

bank balcony, or they're in between apartments playing. I

37:40

do see her all that day. No, ma'am. Okay.

37:44

38-year-old Robert Howard lived and

37:46

worked in Bruton, Alabama, which

37:49

was about an hour away from the

37:51

apartment complex where Naomi lived. But

37:55

Robert would often spend days at a

37:57

time at his girlfriend's apartment, which

37:59

was just a few doors away

38:02

from Naomi's apartment. According

38:30

to Robert, he and his girlfriend Lauren had

38:33

dated for over two years and they

38:36

had a child together. Yet,

38:39

they lived an hour apart. For

38:42

detectives, this seemed

38:44

like an odd arrangement, but

38:47

they did confirm that all of it was true when

38:50

they spoke to Lauren. How long have

38:52

you been with Robert? Two

38:56

years. About two years? Mm-hmm. And

39:00

does Robert live with you? So

39:05

explain to me how that worked

39:07

out, because he's been rooting at

39:09

work and he also keeps the place up

39:11

there too? Given

39:14

that Robert frequently stayed at Lauren's

39:16

apartment and that the two

39:18

of them were basically Naomi's neighbors, the

39:20

cops wanted to find out exactly

39:23

what they did on the day

39:25

that Naomi went missing. As

39:27

for Lauren, her day was pretty

39:29

easy to track and verify. Lauren

39:32

went to work in the morning and

39:34

didn't return until the early evening. She

39:38

left her apartment while Naomi was

39:40

still accounted for and didn't return

39:42

until long after Naomi went missing.

39:45

So Lauren seemed to be in the clear. Okay,

39:48

so when you left that morning at 6,

39:51

was Robert there? Yes. Okay.

39:55

And when you

39:57

got home, was Robert there? Okay,

40:00

right. Now, that

40:05

night, I guess, you probably wouldn't come home

40:07

and gone to sleep at some point. Is

40:09

that fair to say? Do

40:12

you remember him coming home to your

40:14

house after you

40:16

had been to sleep? Yeah.

40:19

Okay. What

40:21

did he do? Um, to

40:24

help him with... Robert

40:26

told investigators that on the day

40:29

that Naomi went missing, he

40:31

woke up at Lauren's apartment, went

40:33

to the gym, and then returned

40:36

to the apartment. Then

40:38

he drove to Lauren's work to quickly visit

40:40

her, which Lauren

40:42

later confirmed. After

40:45

that, Robert returned to the apartment one

40:47

more time and prepared to go to

40:49

work. You were at Freecar? Yeah. What

40:52

is your schedule at work? Um, Fortnite,

40:54

you know, the wind, nine times between

40:57

3.30 and five. Did

41:00

you work that Wednesday that Naomi went missing, the

41:02

initial day? That Wednesday night, yeah. I

41:05

got to work maybe like, between 5.30 and

41:08

15.30, somewhere up in there, somewhere, somewhere,

41:10

say, in the apartment,

41:12

around 4.30. Robert

41:15

was a night shift employee at

41:17

a large train repair facility. On

41:20

the night in question, and on

41:22

most nights, Robert worked alongside

41:24

only one other employee. So

41:27

you worked with Robert? I heard

41:29

that you two were the only two at

41:31

night? Yes. Okay.

41:33

All right. Five o'clock, most of the

41:35

time, three o'clock, even one, two,

41:38

one, two o'clock in the morning or 11 o'clock at night. It

41:40

just means, now I'm paying the level of the squeeze list. Okay.

41:43

According to his coworker, Robert

41:45

did show up to work on the evening

41:47

that Naomi Jones went missing, and

41:50

he worked a full shift. Presumably,

41:52

had Robert abducted and murdered Naomi

41:54

earlier that day, he almost

41:57

certainly would have been acting differently. showing

42:00

some signs that he did something

42:02

horrible, right? As

42:05

far as this

42:07

coworker could tell,

42:09

Robert seemed like his

42:14

same old self. But

42:34

as investigators began looking into the

42:37

type of man that Robert was,

42:40

they quickly learned that Robert was

42:43

pretty good at keeping secrets. During

42:46

his interview, Robert admitted that

42:48

in addition to dating Lauren and

42:50

having a child with her and

42:53

pretty much living at her apartment, Robert

42:56

was also dating another woman. She

42:59

was 37-year-old Yolanda

43:02

Mitchell. It turned out that on the

43:04

day that Naomi Jones went

43:07

missing, Robert

43:24

visited Yolanda on his way to

43:26

work. Yolanda had

43:29

just come from a funeral and needed

43:31

a shoulder to cry on, if

43:33

you know what I mean. So Robert

43:37

obliged. He

44:01

was. Very supportive, very encouraging

44:03

like and literally slows down crying

44:06

because I consensus on how to

44:21

44:23

was cheating on the mother of his

44:25

44:27

think that. Maybe. He's a decent

44:29

guy. After all, offering

44:31

44:33

left a funeral is a kind

44:35

June fifth, twenty seventeen, after

dead body of twelve year old Naomi Jones

53:56

was found under a small bridge at Eight

53:58

Mile Creek and Co. Nicola, Florida.

54:02

It. Was later determined that Naomi had

54:04

been strangled to death. And

54:06

her body was thrown off a bridge. During.

54:09

The murder investigation. Was

54:12

54:14

of people. Among those

54:16

questioned was thirty eight year old

54:18

Robert Coward. Robert. Lived

54:21

and worked and Bruton, Alabama.

54:24

But. He often stayed at his

54:26

girlfriend's apartment and Pensacola. Which. Happened

54:28

to be in the same apartment complex

54:30

where Naomi lives and was last seen

54:33

alive. We. All know that.

54:35

And true crime cases. There's

54:44

Than. Are non probably did

it. Yeah, common sense. The.

54:49

Kind of thing that isn't around that much

54:51

these days. There's also the

54:53

fact of course that Robert. Was a

54:56

registered sex offender. In

54:59

the late nineties. He was convicted of

55:01

first degree rape twice. And. Spent

55:03

fifteen years in prison, After

55:06

learning about Robert and his history.

55:08

Investigators. Used phone records and

55:10

surveillance footage to track Roberts movements

55:13

on the day that Naomi Jones

55:15

went missing. Wants

55:17

a sex offender? Always.

55:19

A sex offender. Investigators

55:22

new and more importantly could

55:24

prove. That Robert was

55:26

at the apartment complex when Naomi

55:29

was abducted. And that Robert

55:31

had driven to the creek where her body

55:33

was found. About twelve hours

55:36

after her disappearance, And.

55:38

Other words, Robert was fucked.

55:41

Given. His background, the evidence,

55:44

along with the fact that

55:46

Robert was the only person

55:48

they interviewed that lied about

55:50

their whereabouts. The

55:52

cops knew they had their man. Despite

55:55

all of this, when questioned. Robert.

55:58

Refused to confess. And.

56:00

He continued. To. Lie. Something

56:03

to, for example, You

56:48

Sunday's. Robert denied

56:50

having anything to do with Naomi,

56:53

his disappearance, and Er das. But.

56:56

He also denied that he was

56:58

ever near Eight Mile Creek. Basically.

57:01

57:03

57:06

Have I heard that before? Oh yeah. Who.

57:37

because there's no way is.

57:41

Robert. Really thought he could call the cops

57:43

bluff by asking to see the evidence, but.

57:46

There. Was no bluff. His

57:48

car was captured on camera in the

57:50

area where Naomi was found and when

57:52

Robert asked to see the footage, Detectives.

57:56

Obliged. Smith said and

58:17

at the scene where Noom his

58:19

58:22

Was simply no way around it. He

58:24

couldn't deny it. I mean, he could,

58:26

but he was denying of fact. It's.

58:28

Pretty obvious. When. Faced

58:31

with this. Finally,

58:34

Robert. Seems to story. He.

58:36

Admitted to going to the Creek, but claimed

58:38

Was something that only the killer.

1:05:26

Could. Know if he found the can

1:05:28

their mouth? And

1:05:31

Enema. What?

1:05:34

Was. In.

1:05:38

Dallas as. In

1:05:42

asking this question. Robert.

1:05:44

Revealed himself as the killer

1:05:46

but why did he ask

1:05:48

it? Of all the things

1:05:50

he could say are asked

1:05:52

why bring up the candy

1:05:55

and naomi his mouth. For

1:05:58

investigators, this question. Presented

1:06:00

the twisted and evil

1:06:02

gratification. That Robert had

1:06:05

in what he had done

1:06:07

to Naomi. In

1:06:09

any case, after revealing himself

1:06:11

as a killer, Robertson went

1:06:13

to spin a story about

1:06:15

how Naomi died. Courting.

1:06:18

The Robert: On the day of the murder,

1:06:20

he ran into Naomi in the parking lot

1:06:22

of her apartment complex and. See

1:06:24

unexpectedly started to flirt with i'm.

1:06:27

Just and. Slices.

1:06:34

Were flown. From

1:06:39

an asshole know? Some.

1:06:44

A mix of the doors and others. Or

1:06:47

back home. She says

1:06:49

there's she's my wife's the next meal once

1:06:51

in a class in. The

1:06:54

midfield. Since

1:06:57

and she's making just months it's

1:06:59

a mean he she some you

1:07:01

know. She.

1:07:04

Commands You have the

1:07:06

finances, Robert

1:07:09

explain that twelve year old

1:07:11

Naomi. Made. Very aggressive

1:07:13

sexual advances towards him.

1:07:16

Something. Straight out of penthouse

1:07:18

letters if you can imagine that.

1:07:21

And remember that reference. He.

1:07:24

Said that this twelve year old

1:07:26

girl. Insisted on going into

1:07:29

the apartment where Robert stayed. With.

1:07:32

His girlfriend. She's met

1:07:34

ancestors social sisters, Since.

1:07:38

She sees the. On she

1:07:40

was on that a deep. Net

1:07:43

this time when she didn't grandmother was

1:07:45

she grabbed it like my served about

1:07:47

my serve Ice his friends. She's

1:07:51

she bounces, know. Even

1:07:54

is going try to do never me Maybe she was

1:07:56

astonishing just nice to see my the. I

1:07:59

don't know. That ensure

1:08:01

to. right?

1:08:05

Because. That's what

1:08:07

every. Pre. Teen Girl Wants.

1:08:10

To. See a forty year old

1:08:12

man's penis? Sure,

1:08:16

Of course. Roberts. Telling

1:08:18

of these events was no more

1:08:20

believable than his ridiculous. Note:

1:08:22

On the Car story. But.

1:08:25

The fact that. He was lying.

1:08:27

Wasn't. The worst of it. The.

1:08:29

Worst part was the fact that he was trying

1:08:32

to blame. The. Murder victim.

1:08:35

A child. For. What

1:08:37

happened next? According.

1:08:40

To Robert when Naomi refuse to accept

1:08:42

his rejection of her. He.

1:08:44

Decided to strangle her. Because.

1:08:48

That makes total sense. Before

1:08:50

realized so doll. Houses

1:08:53

promenade, onset of So

1:08:56

thera. Him aside

1:08:58

and remaining for letting me to

1:09:00

do. About

1:09:03

those users they is like Albert.

1:09:06

And. So. Purple

1:09:08

bamboo supposed to bring.

1:09:11

Robert claim that he didn't intend to

1:09:13

kill Naomi. And as expected,

1:09:16

he denied raping her. Once

1:09:18

again, we have a case where the

1:09:20

bad guy is willing to admit to

1:09:22

murder. But. Won't admit

1:09:24

to raping his victim. Weird.

1:09:28

I'll just as one thousand didn't have

1:09:31

a bottom this of later. On

1:09:34

know nothing about it. Not.

1:09:36

Into in two cents as a

1:09:38

me. I

1:09:41

so brought yes. I'll

1:09:43

admit that ideas for brother that in that as last

1:09:45

night as I have sex with their my car no

1:09:47

I didn't do any of it. Robber.

1:09:50

Denied raping Naomi and surprisingly the

1:09:52

prosecutors in a scam be a

1:09:54

county. Ever sought rape

1:09:56

charges against him. Like

1:10:00

actually I'm in a high

1:10:02

frame before or after that.

1:10:05

Most. It's possible

1:10:07

that prosecutors were unable to prove

1:10:09

that Naomi had been raped. But.

1:10:12

It's also possible that didn't feel

1:10:14

like they needed to. Perhaps.

1:10:17

They didn't want that information to be

1:10:19

made public if it wasn't necessary to

1:10:22

do so. But. Legally

1:10:24

speaking. That wasn't the

1:10:26

most pressing issue. Robert.

1:10:28

Claim that Naomi death was an accident.

1:10:31

If. The jury was convinced of that

1:10:33

Robert could be convicted of second

1:10:35

degree murder. Or. Even

1:10:37

manslaughter. For. Prosecutors

1:10:40

and Naomi his mom.

1:10:43

That. Would be devastating. They.

1:10:46

Wanted a first degree murder

1:10:48

conviction. And. A.

1:10:50

Death Sentence. Answer: Want

1:10:52

them Say: given the death penalty,

1:10:54

that's what he desires on that.

1:10:56

A major part about the Injustice

1:10:59

Fi now on. The

1:11:01

case against Robert Howard took two

1:11:03

years to go to trial. And

1:11:06

in the end, Florida prosecutors were

1:11:08

not able to obtain a death

1:11:10

sentence. They. Did however

1:11:12

convince a jury to return of

1:11:15

first degree murder conviction. And

1:11:17

Robert was sentenced to life in

1:11:20

prison without the possibility. Of

1:11:22

Parole. In. Many

1:11:24

ways, Robert Howard is an

1:11:26

unremarkable rapist and murderer. He.

1:11:29

Was terrible at covering up his crimes.

1:11:32

And he was one of worst liars

1:11:34

we've ever come across. Meaning.

1:11:36

That. He sucks at it.

1:11:39

Is really really really bad at it?

1:11:42

For. Detectives this wasn't exactly

1:11:45

difficult case to close.

1:11:48

But. If. There's anything about

1:11:50

Robert that does stand out.

1:11:53

It's. His ability. To. Trick

1:11:55

the people around him. And

1:11:58

convince them that he was just. The

1:12:00

normal. Decent. And.

1:12:02

Trustworthy guy. I. Wouldn't

1:12:04

suspect Robert. Little

1:12:07

would have those you know Robert How.

1:12:09

Are described him as an athlete from

1:12:11

Britain close to his family. Who

1:12:13

ran track in every time he

1:12:15

ran football t a bad raymond.

1:12:17

Said, but why shock in the

1:12:19

small town? Howard is a known

1:12:22

sex offender. He spent fifteen years

1:12:24

in prison for awake case and

1:12:26

nineteen. Ninety Nine Month as if it

1:12:28

was mothers' One woman said. She is

1:12:30

related to his first victim and every

1:12:33

one admits that they did not believe

1:12:35

her at the time. Now they wish

1:12:37

they would have listened. ah, didn't want.

1:12:39

To believe he did for the chemo they

1:12:41

were accusing him of the one. Robert.

1:12:44

Howard was clean cut, athletic,

1:12:47

and. Carried himself with

1:12:49

modest confidence, If

1:12:52

he were only able to look at him and

1:12:54

were forced to make an assumption, You.

1:12:56

Probably think he was a normal do that had

1:12:58

his life together. Robert.

1:13:00

Also spoke well and always seemed

1:13:02

genuine. With as politeness. He.

1:13:05

Was universally accepted into every

1:13:07

social setting around him. As

1:13:11

for the people that knew him best.

1:13:13

Specifically. The women he was dating. Learning.

1:13:16

That Robert was a rapist and child

1:13:18

killer was a hard pill. To.

1:13:21

Swallow. So.

1:13:23

Hard and fact. That. A

1:13:25

secret girlfriend Yolanda. Refused.

1:13:28

To accept it. Even

1:13:30

after Robert confessed. Cells.

1:13:32

Need some sense into me? I

1:13:36

just I find my family. Since.

1:13:39

Incident on the way.

1:13:43

For his new he's always

1:13:45

in theory of thanks mate.

1:13:48

Very sleazy, nicely, very charming.

1:13:50

He was always. Like

1:13:52

that. So. You

1:13:55

know, even then and I didn't I didn't

1:13:57

believe me. I don't need. It now I

1:13:59

just can't see. I'm

1:14:01

marie been invited. For

1:14:03

some fans, you know what said. The

1:14:05

cycle: A sociopath. Mentality

1:14:07

and. With. As as

1:14:09

as he says fitness tribal a license

1:14:11

and salient to me that. He.

1:14:14

Would never know. And said

1:14:16

and thin. Coating.

1:14:19

Over and over in my head and

1:14:21

I just found. Within

1:14:24

on his or. Her ethnicity or

1:14:26

worse. As for Roberts

1:14:28

girlfriend Lauren, who was the mother of his

1:14:30

one year old child at the time. The.

1:14:33

News that Robert had murdered a twelve year

1:14:35

old girl. Didn't go

1:14:38

over well. As

1:14:40

far as easy as silly as

1:14:42

he says he said as a

1:14:44

sign because he seems very, very

1:14:46

intelligent. Very. Polite and

1:14:49

lonely in earnings also. Insisting

1:14:52

that face. Value. Of

1:14:58

the sign says. Again

1:15:14

and a blame. Blame yourself. So

1:15:17

that we think we have some. As

1:15:23

useless as he has full

1:15:25

Elena Kagan to get a

1:15:27

week. He

1:15:29

I was a missile launches you. Ever

1:15:32

thought. Of course, no

1:15:35

one in this story has been more

1:15:37

devastated by Roberts actions. The Naomi, his

1:15:39

mom. To. This day.

1:15:41

Send Tara. Hurry. Continues

1:15:44

to wonder who her daughter would have

1:15:46

to come. Had her life.

1:15:49

Not been so tragically stolen.

1:15:52

On April fifteenth, Naomi Jones what

1:15:54

is celebrated her fourteenth birthday. Okay,

1:15:56

yeah, this is one of my

1:15:58

favorite. Her mother says. Would have

1:16:00

been a rise in eighth graders trying

1:16:02

out for the cheer squad and learning

1:16:05

how to drive is so hard and.

1:16:08

Ah, I don't know how

1:16:10

I'm doing it adult as or sentence

1:16:12

the grace of God. To be honest

1:16:14

inside her family now holds onto the

1:16:17

memories they had with her for twelve

1:16:19

years. The go full of y you

1:16:21

loved Hello Kitty and dreamed of becoming

1:16:23

a nurse or doctor like what are

1:16:25

preparing place as Super Bowl prepare place

1:16:27

for twenty years. The best.

1:16:30

Like the hardest Thing says, you know, man,

1:16:32

mail me insane and come on a some

1:16:34

it off. I still do that all the

1:16:36

time. It. Goes without saying

1:16:39

that the story of Naomi Jones.

1:16:41

Is a sad one. It's

1:16:44

heartbreaking. It's depressing.

1:16:47

Not. Only because of the young life

1:16:49

that was lost, but. Also

1:16:51

because Naomi story reveals a harsh

1:16:53

truth about the world that we

1:16:56

live in. And.

1:16:58

It's. A truce that naomi his mom.

1:17:01

Understands. To well, Is

1:17:03

because you have a neighbor of a

1:17:05

few live in an apartment complex and

1:17:08

is because you see them in passing.

1:17:10

A doesn't mean that. You can

1:17:12

trespass. Naomi. His

1:17:14

mom has a very specific

1:17:16

message about trusting neighbors. And

1:17:19

being wary of people that you

1:17:21

frequently see and passing. Frankly,

1:17:25

It. Really sucks. That.

1:17:27

This poor mother. Has. To

1:17:29

go around and make people aware

1:17:31

of stranger danger. But.

1:17:33

That is the world. That.

1:17:35

We live in. Even

1:17:38

more depressing, the story of

1:17:40

Naomi Jones. Is a

1:17:42

grim reminder. That. No matter

1:17:44

how close we become, the someone. And

1:17:46

no matter how well we think, we know them,

1:17:49

We. May not know. Them.

1:17:52

At all. Robert.

1:17:54

Howard is a complete. Sociopath.

1:17:57

A. Pathological liar. Rapist:

1:18:01

And. A child murderer. Yet.

1:18:04

Nobody around him. Not.

1:18:07

Even those closest to him. Saw.

1:18:09

The Danger. That he posed.

1:18:13

Despite. His of criminal

1:18:15

past. And not one

1:18:17

but two rape convictions. Robert.

1:18:20

Was still able to mask the

1:18:22

monster. That he is.

1:18:25

In fact, there was a moment

1:18:27

in time that perfectly illustrates just

1:18:29

how good he was. Doing This.

1:18:33

After Robert murdered Naomi and before

1:18:35

he dumped her body. He.

1:18:37

Drove from Florida to

1:18:40

Alabama toward his job.

1:18:43

Before arriving there, he made a

1:18:45

stop to visit his secret girlfriend

1:18:47

your launder. Who. Was in

1:18:49

distress after having just left a funeral.

1:18:52

Yolanda sat in the passenger seat

1:18:54

of roberts car and shared her

1:18:56

brief with i'm. Robert.

1:19:00

And sold her. He

1:19:02

was her shoulder. To

1:19:04

cry on. As she

1:19:06

cried. Robert smiles.

1:19:10

Wiped away her tears. And

1:19:12

told Yolanda that everything would

1:19:14

be okay. All

1:19:17

the while. Naomi is

1:19:19

dead body. Was. Lying.

1:19:22

In. The back seat. Of

1:19:24

his car. It in.

1:19:27

Under a raincoat. Robert

1:19:30

didn't visit Yolanda to help her.

1:19:34

He didn't care about her feelings are

1:19:36

have any real interest in helping her

1:19:38

through a difficult time. The

1:19:40

reason Robert went to go see Yolanda

1:19:42

that day was. Because

1:19:45

he wanted to establish. A

1:19:47

false alibi. He. Tried

1:19:49

to use a woman's green. To.

1:19:52

Protect himself. While

1:19:55

the corpse of his twelve year old

1:19:57

murder victim. Was in the

1:19:59

back. Robert

1:20:01

Howard. Is a monster.

1:20:05

And his ability to hide that

1:20:07

fact. Was almost.

1:20:10

Effortless. All

1:20:13

it took. Was.

1:20:15

A raincoat, And
