Human Rights Day is commemorated annually on 21 March to remind South Africans about the sacrifices that accompanied the struggle for democracy in South Africa.

The 1960s were characterised by systematic defiance and protest against apartheid and racism across the country. On March 21, 1960 the communities of Sharpeville and Langa, along with their compatriots, embarked on a march to protest against pass laws.

Our democratic government declared March 21 Human Rights Day to commemorate and honour those who fought and lost their lives for our liberation and the rights we enjoy today. Our Constitution is hailed as one of the most progressive in the world.

It is because of the sacrifices of these people that we can enjoy weekends and time with the people that we love most, irrespective of race, religion, sexual orientation or any other category that attempts to box us. Realise your Rights and remember your responsibilities!

With our History lesson done, it’s time to crack on with all things weekend!
