Interesting to hear Jeff talk about the development of his aesthetic, and I was particularly taken by his thoughts on the need for a 'narrative arc'. "Like a lot of times when I’m finishing up an episode, I'll be like, okay, so like what public radio show that I listened to growing up would this fit on? Like what am I emulating here? And if the answer is like ‘none of the above’, then that’s what makes me feel the best.Because there is convention there in radio and a lot of its there for good reason. But some of it isn't. Some of it’s just there because it's there. So when someone says, “Okay fine, but where's the narrative arc in this?”I see that as a big trap. I see that as a way of people closing off their word view. The question should not be where’s the narrative arc? The question should be, at the end of the day, isn't this interesting? And I think that episode’s interesting. I don't see any reason for the lack of narrative arc to dismantle that even if it does ruffle a couple of feathers or turn a few people off."
