Oh, wait, no. Hello, Keeter. There
0:02
we go, there we go. That's the one.
0:04
That's the way I want to hear this.
0:06
Like, hello, Keeter. I want to tickle their
0:08
eardrums. Hey, you and welcome. Welcome,
0:11
folks. My name is Mike, and you are joining
0:13
us. I'm going to do my N.P. Or voice.
0:15
OK, my time. Hey, everybody. Thanks for joining us
0:17
once again to the thatch. No. All right. All
0:19
right. Keeter over here.
0:21
He's cackling across from me. Your
0:24
best fan. Yes. Your biggest hype man. My
0:27
shitty joke hype man. As
0:29
a person described it, also I
0:31
believe her name was. She's saying you're
0:33
also the resident dad joke teller. Tell
0:35
me you joke, funny man. Oh, shit. On the spot. Yes,
0:39
you're a joke teller. Tell me a
0:41
joke. Make me laugh. Make the audience laugh more importantly.
0:43
They're judging you right now. Oh, my god. It's so
0:45
hard to think. Yeah. This always happens. And I always
0:47
feel, I always like every single time this happens, I'm
0:49
always like, I need to have a joke, a good
0:51
joke, and just have it. Remember it, and just have
0:53
it on demand. And then what ends up happening is
0:55
I just overuse that joke to death and tell everyone
0:57
like three or four times, I'm like, shut the fuck
0:59
up with that joke. Yeah. And then I have to forget it.
1:01
So yeah, but I don't have a joke. OK. Well,
1:04
that's fantastic. Yeah, right. Excellent
1:06
content. Excellent. This is what folks tuned in for
1:09
to hear. So you
1:11
know what? It's been a week, a long ass
1:13
week, since the folks at home.
1:15
Folks, eagerly are waiting. I don't know what you do.
1:17
Who knows what they got up to in the last
1:19
week since they heard us. I assumed just waiting to
1:22
hear this podcast. Alone in the dark. The
1:24
way they should be. So
1:26
Keith, what were you up to since I seen
1:28
you last, which is minutes ago
1:30
because we were recording part one and part two
1:32
on the same day. I
1:34
didn't want to spoil the surprise. You
1:37
can't tell the folks at home how to sausage is made.
1:39
Of course, of course, of course. OK. Yeah,
1:41
grand. I am hanging today.
1:43
You are? I know. I've noticed your voice is
1:46
a little gravellier than
1:48
normal. Yeah, I'm very hungover today.
1:51
I was at some 41 last night, really
1:53
enjoyed it. They were playing down in Fairview
1:55
Park in Dublin. It's like they're farewell tour
1:57
that they're doing. Wow. Farewell? They're not that
1:59
old. I did be out of the arid of
2:01
a big concerts. I'm gonna get a speed run. I'm
2:03
gonna say 96 could be wrong You know said the
2:06
freaking be of bringing a star is still playing and
2:08
he's a frickin walking skeleton Let me check Bruce Springsteen
2:10
is like 70s. I'm not playing for our shows 1996.
2:12
It's like going in What
2:15
else when he started so yeah, dude did their farewell
2:18
turn or turn a lot of? Countries
2:20
to finish up. I want to
2:22
say January very probably but yeah, so does emotional
2:24
last time I'm gonna see them so gonna miss
2:26
them, but it again. They're brilliant really really good
2:29
There's lots of fire and there was a hell
2:31
yeah the budget for like streamers a confetti for
2:33
that show was off the charts Really? Wow they
2:35
must made no money from the show Yeah, just
2:38
give it to you. I'm scared. Oh cuz there
2:40
was a lot of confetti and fire. It's like
2:42
this feels like napalm It's
2:45
a farewell show but not for that But
2:49
yeah, it was great That was good show and
2:51
then we end up walking into walk through the
2:53
town then and went to Fibber McGee's fibbers So
2:55
for anyone listening that I know mostly audiences the
2:57
US. It's like a rock bar Yeah, anybody who
2:59
lives in Dublin will know for sure it's there
3:02
It's one of the last remaining rock bars like
3:04
well metal bars. I guess it is for sure
3:06
I think it was a sum up fibbers in
3:08
one word it will be smells like piss crusty
3:10
piss Yes, it's good of a and of all
3:12
I've been to a lot of bars in Dublin
3:14
and in all the bars It's the pissiest smelling
3:16
piss bar. It's it's strong as soon as you
3:18
know. I think said that it's actually a good
3:20
bar I've been there quite a number of times
3:22
and I don't I ever have a good there
3:24
of a lot of fun But you it does
3:27
smell I did the drains literally flow upwards So
3:29
what do you like you were correct with that
3:31
because there was one time I was I was
3:33
that fair reason was a gig I went downstairs
3:35
and the whole downstairs was like flooded with water
3:37
from the bathroom Wow So yes literally as you're
3:39
saying they float up, you know, we have our
3:41
story of our little kind of side thing We
3:43
do listener stories. I would love to hear bar
3:45
stories Folks
3:47
at home. Let's start. We maybe will have a little
3:49
episode bonus upset every once in a while Where we
3:51
just hear of like the shittiest bars. Yeah, you bet
3:53
that's actually a good idea. Are you pretty? Good
3:56
you kick it off. Have you got me? No All
6:00
right, well speaking of getting back to work, I
6:02
suppose we should probably tell the story that we're
6:04
supposed to know Oh, okay. All right. Well, I
6:06
don't talk more of a shitty bar as a
6:08
ghost But no, we actually
6:11
have a really interesting story to tell
6:13
so today folks We are back for
6:15
part two of Robert Hanson the butcher
6:17
baker of Anchorage, Alaska So
6:19
in part one we looked at the life
6:21
of Robert Hanson who was a hell of
6:23
a loser what a weird-ass dick. Mm-hmm born
6:26
Iowa 1939
6:28
he endured a strict upbringing and severe bullying
6:30
on account of his stutter Which
6:32
he developed after being forced being beaten to shit
6:34
to use his right hand and then he'd he'd
6:37
bad-ass me And he just nobody liked him after
6:39
a stint in the army and committing
6:42
arson He was jailed but later moved
6:44
to Anchorage with his wife where he
6:46
seemed to settle down But secretly escalated
6:48
his criminal activities in part one We
6:50
talked about how in November of 1971
6:52
in Anchorage, Alaska Robert
6:55
Hanson followed an 18 year old Susie
6:57
Hepburn home tried to kidnap her a
6:59
gunpoint a week later though arrested He
7:01
quickly secured bail then in December
7:03
1971 a month
7:05
after his first attack He kidnapped
7:07
and assaulted Robin Patterson. She survived
7:10
and eventually reported him However, a
7:12
severe mishandling of evidence weakened the
7:14
case against him Despite
7:16
this Hanson received a light sentence and
7:19
was a he was soon released But
7:21
he was also suspected to put not
7:23
charged in the unsolved murder of Celia
7:25
Van Zanten Signaling a dangerous
7:27
pattern in his behavior. Yeah,
7:30
they're all up to speed on that part one with my
7:32
dramatic voice Let's get into part
7:34
numero 2-0. Let's do it Yeah It
7:37
was mad as well because what like
7:39
all these brushes with the law that
7:41
we talked about in part one They
7:44
like did very little to discourage Robert
7:46
Hanson from a life of crime Like
7:48
he decided to take these experiences as
7:50
more like learning opportunities to refine his
7:53
criminal technique as a kidnapper and a
7:55
rapist Mmm, like he'd learned to target
7:57
vulnerable girls who wouldn't be He missed
7:59
such as sex workers. He also became
8:02
skilled at manipulating his image within the
8:04
community, presenting himself as a devoted family
8:06
man and a religious individual. And
8:09
this has made it easier for people to
8:11
trust him and overlook his weird and suspicious
8:13
behavior. Yes, as we mentioned in
8:15
part one, he really learned when he got first
8:17
arrested. He really learned a lot when he first
8:19
got in trouble. And what he learned was you
8:21
have a clean cut public image, you can really
8:23
kind of get away with anything. Do what you
8:25
want. Hell yeah. That's why I've been
8:27
cultivating my own clean cut image. Oh wait,
8:29
did I say that? Sorry. So Robert
8:31
was, he was still on parole and he
8:33
kept himself busy between work and the halfway
8:36
house to keep his parole officer, you know,
8:38
pretty happy, keep him on his good side.
8:41
However, as soon as he was allowed to drive
8:43
by himself again, women started
8:46
disappearing again on
8:48
July 7th, 1973. So
8:51
what's that? A year and a
8:53
half after his first attacks. Not long. 17
8:56
year old Megan Emmerich disappeared without a
8:58
trace after she had gone into town.
9:01
Now there aren't many details about
9:03
what actually happened, but Robert ended
9:05
up being considered a potential suspect
9:07
in her disappearance. Then
9:09
in September of 1974, a
9:11
16 year old girl by
9:13
the name of Leela was walking home
9:16
from a party when an innocent looking
9:18
man offered her a ride home. As
9:21
soon as she got in the car, the
9:23
man pulled out an iron on her and
9:25
drove to a remote area and told her
9:27
to perform oral sex on him. When
9:29
he finished, just like Robin Patterson,
9:32
he let Leela go, but not
9:34
before writing down her information and saying he
9:36
would kill her and her parents if
9:38
she went to the police. Too
9:41
scared, Leela never told
9:43
anyone until years later.
9:45
Yeah, this particular incident really shows how Robert,
9:48
he just enjoyed the power and control he
9:50
had over these women. At one point he
9:52
actually gave Leela the gun saying you can
9:55
do whatever you want with me or you
9:57
can tend to drive to the police station.
10:00
to hand her the gun. Lila, she suspected
10:02
that this was a test or something. So,
10:04
either way, she was too scared to try
10:06
anything, so she just gave the gun back.
10:08
But he just had complete control. But, you
10:10
know, to be fair, you would
10:12
be thinking this was some kind of trap. But
10:15
this is where we really started to see Hansen
10:17
playing with his victims in this sort of way,
10:19
kind of seeing how far he can
10:21
push them and the control that he has over them.
10:23
And we'll see it in a couple other cases where,
10:25
not necessarily giving the gun, but kind of leaving the
10:27
gun out and just giving them the
10:29
opportunity to kind of either kill them or get
10:31
away. And yeah, he just has complete control over
10:33
them. On July
10:36
5th, 1975, 23-year-old Mary
10:38
Kay Phil disappeared. When
10:41
her husband got home from working on the pipeline
10:43
and realized she'd been missing, he put out a
10:45
$1,000 award for any information.
10:49
However, none was ever provided and
10:51
her body was never found. Unfortunately,
10:54
with no body, the police were never
10:56
able to confirm Robert Hansen was linked
10:58
to her disappearance. That
11:00
same year, Hansen kidnapped and raped a
11:02
topless dancer after meeting her at the
11:05
KitKat Club. Once again, Hansen
11:07
let her go, but the woman memorized
11:09
the license plate and went straight to
11:11
the police. This case, it
11:13
actually proved quite challenging to handle.
11:16
So, the unidentified woman, she chose to
11:18
communicate only through a third party. So,
11:21
an employee at the Anchorage Rape and
11:23
Sexual Assault Center would talk to them,
11:25
then they'd talk to the police. So,
11:28
Hansen, he refuted the accusation, claiming that he
11:30
couldn't possibly possess any firearms due to his
11:32
felonstance. Of course. I couldn't have the law
11:34
told me I can't have it. I always
11:37
obey the law. Exactly. So, according to
11:39
him, the incident, it was merely just a money-related disagreement
11:43
between him and a sex worker. So, this was,
11:45
you know, as far as the cops workers are,
11:48
this should be an open and shut case. So,
11:50
he said that he left her unharmed and
11:52
drove her back to the club. The case
11:54
eventually hit a dead end when pressing charges
11:57
against Hansen just became impossible because the woman
11:59
refused to disclose her real identity. So she
12:01
clarified that she wasn't just a dancer, but
12:03
she was also a school teacher and she
12:05
couldn't risk her career by stepping forward and
12:07
making herself known. Sure, of course, of
12:10
course, of course, but it's also ultimately tragic that
12:12
she couldn't, but yeah, it's horrible.
12:15
She was in that situation. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.
12:18
So during this time period, as you've
12:21
seen already, Robert seemed completely untouchable and
12:23
who'd want to touch his weirdo stick?
12:26
It seemed like he could do whatever
12:28
he pleased to whomever he pleased with
12:30
whomever he pleased with facing any repercussions.
12:33
That is until one incident in 1976 where the
12:37
police finally said, enough is
12:39
a goddamn heck and enough. Robert
12:43
shoplifted a chainsaw. Shocking,
12:46
if you can say the least. Robert
12:49
was back in court, but what
12:51
would usually be a misdemeanor for
12:53
shoplifting was bumped up to felony
12:55
larceny charges once the district attorney
12:58
reviewed his previous violent past. Now
13:00
you may be thinking, great, Jesus, my
13:04
lucky day ever hearing this. They finally got
13:06
them. They got them. They got the bastard.
13:08
Finally, some repercussions for old Bobby's actions, but
13:12
nine. Robert quickly
13:14
made bail and once again got the
13:16
help of some psychiatrists to help him
13:18
game the legal system by claiming mental
13:20
health issues. My poor brain. I
13:23
don't know. I'm not responsible for what I did. I don't
13:25
know what I'm doing. Yeah. Yeah. Where
13:27
am I? Who am I? The
13:29
case continued until January 1977 when the judge
13:31
ultimately sentenced
13:33
Robert to five years in prison equipped
13:36
with psychiatric care facilities. Robert
13:38
was subsequently put on parole in August of
13:40
1978. However, remarkably, Hansen
13:44
appeared to evade any real legal
13:47
oversight. No specific parole terms were
13:49
established, leaving him essentially free to
13:51
act as he wished. Once
13:54
again, Robert Hansen was back on the street within no
13:56
time hunting his next victim. He was just playing the
13:58
goddamn system. them again and again and again, I've had
14:00
enough of this guy. He knew how to play them.
14:03
He played them like a goddamn fiddle. I've had it
14:05
up to here. So when
14:07
Robert, when he wasn't working at the
14:09
bakery or hunting with his friend, he
14:11
was spending nights at various strip clubs
14:13
around Anchorage looking for his next victim.
14:16
And there were a number of topless bars and strip clubs
14:18
around that area at the time for him to choose from.
14:21
Most notable of which were, you mentioned one, the Kit Kat
14:23
Club. The Wild Cherry was
14:25
another one. Nice. This one's my favorite, the
14:27
Alaskan Bush Company. That is good. Isn't it?
14:29
Remember, they had a good ass time with
14:31
that name. That was a good one. That's
14:33
going to pat it. Fair play to you.
14:36
Yeah, enjoy that one. And the
14:38
Empress Club. And this was the one that Robert, he would freak
14:40
with the most. If you were the strip club, what would
14:42
you call it? The Mike Zone? The Mickey Zone. The
14:44
Mickey Zone. Nice. Yeah. What would you call it? Probably
14:46
the Mickey Zone. So
14:52
by the way, Robert's wife, Darla Hansen, she had
14:54
still been with him throughout this whole thing. So
14:56
it's likely that his wife knew about he had
14:58
a thing for sex workers. I'm sure. However, she
15:00
probably just she probably didn't know about his violent,
15:03
how violent he got with the women. Like she
15:05
was quite isolated up there in Anchorage, which at
15:07
this age, they're two kids as well. She
15:10
worked, but she was like somewhat financially dependent
15:12
on Robert as well, which is likely why
15:15
she just kind of turned a blind eye
15:17
with him frequenting services of sex workers. Yeah.
15:19
Was he ever violent with her? No. No.
15:21
Really? Yeah. He was never violent with his
15:23
wife, never violent with his kids. He kept
15:25
his like his home life as his home
15:27
life. He was able to really compartmentalize his
15:29
serial killer nature. And then
15:31
his just clean family image. Why
15:34
he genuinely did think he was like, I am just clean
15:36
family men, because his life was so compartmentalized. He could see
15:38
himself as two completely different things at the same time. And
15:40
like, but it's it's my as well, because it's not like
15:42
he was a good father. Like he was very distant from
15:44
his family. So we had his family and they were kind
15:46
of doing their own thing. And he kind of pop in
15:48
every now and again. That was like his home base. And
15:50
then he'd go out and do, but like, yeah, he
15:52
wasn't a he still had that clean image with the
15:54
family. But in reality, he was just he was never
15:56
there. Like, yeah, yeah. They were kind of still drowning.
15:58
Yeah, they didn't know. really. However,
16:01
as we know, Robert went a lot
16:03
further than just visiting the Topples, Barres
16:06
and Strip clubs. It was at
16:08
Embers in October of 1979 when Christy Hayes
16:12
experienced a terrifying encounter
16:14
with Robert. Like
16:16
many women in her line of work, she
16:18
did whatever it took to pay the bills.
16:20
So when Robert waved some cash at her,
16:23
she agreed to meet him after her shift
16:25
at the club. Christy met
16:27
Robert outside the club in his camper
16:29
van and agreed to perform oral sex
16:31
on them exchange for payment. But
16:33
as she was starting, Robert shoved a gun
16:36
in her face and
16:39
told her to strip or he would
16:41
kill her. Then he
16:43
tied her hands with wire. But
16:46
Christy wasn't going down without a fight
16:49
and sounded screaming as loud as she
16:51
could. Panicking that someone might hear, Robert
16:53
jumped into the driver's seat and sped
16:56
off into the wilderness. Christy
16:58
still in the back tied up
17:00
with wires. But she managed
17:02
to untie the wiring around her hands
17:05
and began banging on the camper van
17:07
windows hoping to catch the attention of
17:09
passing cars. Frustrated though
17:12
that he couldn't control her, Robert
17:14
slammed on the brakes causing Christy
17:16
to bump hit her head against
17:18
a wall. He got out,
17:20
walked around and opened the van door. Despite
17:23
being dazed, Christy, man, fair play
17:25
to her. She was a fighter.
17:27
Yeah, she wasn't finished. She fought
17:29
past Robert and ran naked and
17:31
terrified back towards the city. She
17:34
was bleeding, she was bruised, she
17:36
was freezing and she had a
17:38
serial killer chasing her in a
17:40
van. But she managed to outrun
17:42
him just long enough for Robert to give up. He
17:44
does that a lot. There's been a couple of times
17:46
when like he's gone to give chase when someone runs
17:49
off him. He
17:53
tossed her clothes out the window and sped off. But
17:56
this wasn't the last time she would cross paths with
17:58
him. Christy, by the way, he It really comes out
18:00
with a story like looking like a badass. She seems
18:02
very cool. She's a badass, yeah. She
18:04
quit her job at the Embers Club and
18:06
then became a dancer at the, very nicely
18:08
named, Alaskan Bush Company. Later that
18:11
same year, while she was dancing on
18:13
stage, she noticed a familiar face in
18:15
the crowd. And like a badass, she
18:17
jumped from the stage into the crowd
18:19
and started clawing at his face. The
18:21
cops were called and Christie explained the
18:23
whole story. Unfortunately though, as
18:25
we have seen time and time again before, without
18:27
any evidence, it boiled down to a case of
18:30
he said, she said, and who are they gonna
18:32
trust? The police in the eyes of the law,
18:34
are they gonna believe a sex worker or this
18:36
nice, clean family man? Hmm, yeah, yeah. He got
18:38
away once again. It was
18:41
actually funny as well, when I was reading this story. Yeah,
18:43
I always had like, Christie comes off as a tall badass.
18:45
She wore a lot of wigs as well while she was
18:47
dancing. I guess it was kind of a part of try
18:49
to keep some sort of, yeah, stay anonymous. It's not really
18:51
her on the stage, she's acting. Yeah, yeah, but this is
18:54
like when he got her in the car and he like
18:56
pulled the gun on her face, he grabbed her by the
18:58
hair, pulled down and then like her, the wig came off.
19:00
He was like, whoa. Did I tear her head off? And
19:02
I was like, one thing that kind of frazzled him at
19:05
the start, like, it's a good Jesus, his hair's gone. And
19:07
then when he went to the Alaskan Busch Company, stripped it
19:09
up, but she was wearing a different wig
19:11
again. I think he didn't recognize her. He didn't recognize her at
19:13
all, yeah. So he was like, my woman just jumping out of
19:15
her car. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It
19:17
was around this time that another woman
19:19
experienced a very similar ordeal to Christie.
19:21
However, in this case, the woman did
19:24
not escape with her life. What
19:26
we know about this woman comes from
19:29
Robert's recollection years later. However,
19:31
he thought so little of his victims
19:33
that he couldn't provide enough information for
19:35
a positive identification of her. What
19:37
we do know is that she
19:39
was a sex worker whom Robert coerced into
19:41
his van. He then threatened her with a
19:44
gun and drove her into the Alaskan wilderness.
19:46
They traveled down the Clinton Road, a route
19:49
that would eventually bear her name. During
19:51
an escape attempt where she tried to
19:53
use a knife, Robert overpowered her, disarming
19:56
her and fatally stabbing her with her
19:58
own blade lodged into her spine. mine.
20:00
This marked his first confirmed
20:02
kill, though likely not his
20:05
actual first. Her
20:07
half-eaten buddy was eventually found in a
20:10
shallow grave a year later by some
20:12
electrical workers. They never found out her
20:14
real name, so she is known only as Eklutna
20:17
Annie, and all we really know about her
20:19
is from what Lion Bastard Robert Hanson spoke
20:21
of years later. In 1980, Alaska estate troopers
20:23
responded to a remote location where human remains
20:25
had been
20:52
discovered. Unfortunately, upon their
20:54
arrival, they found that a black
20:57
bear had already reached the scene
20:59
before them. They had to retreat back and
21:01
just helplessly witness the bear tear apart their usual means. The
21:15
black bears are protected species, so
21:17
they left the troopers unable to
21:19
defend themselves if the situation got
21:21
dangerous. They finally left, very
21:23
little of the body remained. But
21:52
there was certainly no evidence left
21:54
to gather. But they were
21:57
able to positively identify the victim as
21:59
Joanne. Messina. Less
22:01
than a year earlier, Joanne Messina
22:03
had the misfortune of crossing paths
22:05
with Robert Hanson. Robert had
22:08
noticed Joanne, a very beautiful and tall woman,
22:10
out walking when he worked up the nerve
22:12
to speak with her. He was like, he
22:14
didn't want to speak with her, but he
22:16
was like, no. Normally
22:18
Robert, a balding man with glasses, a stutter
22:20
and acne scars all over his face would
22:22
be brushed off by a beautiful woman like
22:24
this. However, she was very
22:26
receptive about that. Robert was thinking, wow, man,
22:29
maybe my dick isn't that weird after all.
22:31
Maybe things are okay. He
22:33
was thinking he was the cockatoo walk over here. You
22:36
see, Robert didn't hate all
22:38
women. It was really only sex workers
22:41
that he despised, whom he saw as
22:43
a less than human and expendable. So
22:46
the two, Robert and this tall,
22:48
beautiful Joanne, they walked for a
22:50
while enjoying each other's company. Robert
22:53
felt he had a genuine connection with this woman. Oh,
22:55
maybe I've met my
22:57
soulmate. And he asked if she
22:59
would like to spend the night in his camper van,
23:01
to which, I mean, hey, listen, you want to spend
23:03
the night in my camper van? What a line. What
23:05
an opportunity. Yeah, exactly. You can't pass that up. No,
23:08
not at all. 10 out of 10 times, I'm saying
23:10
yes. Yes. 100%.
23:12
Joanne agreed to get into his camper
23:14
van, but then she said something that
23:16
immediately changed how Robert saw her. She
23:19
told him, we could have a real good time if
23:21
you have some money. Uh
23:24
oh. In Robert's mind, she
23:26
quickly went from a from a goddess,
23:28
from some Greek goddess to an
23:31
indecent and expendable thing that would have sex
23:33
for money. And basically then violent thoughts began
23:35
to flood his head again.
23:38
As he drove deep into the wilderness,
23:40
Joanne noticed that Robert's mood had shifted
23:43
to anger. At the first
23:45
chance she got, she jumped out of the camper
23:47
and attempted to make a run for it. However,
23:49
Robert caught up with her and hit her over
23:51
the head with his gun. She tried
23:54
to fight back, scratching his face out, but it
23:56
was useless. And
23:58
Robert overpowered her and in the end, he... he
24:00
shot her with his .22 caliber revolver. Once
24:03
again Robert buried the body in a
24:06
shallow grave and he left the scene,
24:08
his second confirmed kill. With
24:10
these escalations Robert was now really enjoying
24:12
the thrill of the kill. As
24:15
the bodies kept us turning up it
24:17
became harder for police to brush off
24:19
the reports of these missing women. However
24:21
there was one detective who began suspecting
24:23
that there might be a serial killer
24:25
in Anchorage, Detective Maxine Farrell. Unfortunately finding
24:27
a killer wasn't the only hurdle she
24:29
had to contend with. She also had
24:31
to try and convince her fellow cops
24:33
that there was someone out
24:36
there killing these women and the women that were gone missing.
24:38
So many still believe that the missing
24:41
sex workers were part of their transient
24:43
life so as for the bodies found
24:45
well it's Alaska, it can
24:47
be dangerous. So still Maxine she
24:50
dove into her work taking notes, gathering evidence, pinning
24:52
photos of the missing women on board and trying
24:55
to connect the dots and all that. Up to
24:57
now we've watched Robert move from arson to theft,
24:59
then to kidnapping and now to
25:17
outright murder. It's no surprise
25:19
he followed the typical serial killer path
25:21
of taking trophies from his victims, twisted
25:24
keepsakes to remember his time with each
25:26
and every one of them. Fortunately
25:28
like many serial killers these trophies
25:31
would eventually play a role in
25:33
his downfall but we'll
25:35
get to that in a bit. Is
25:37
on November 17th 1981 that
25:39
another dancer from the wild
25:41
Cherry went missing, 23 year
25:44
old Sherry Morrow. Sherry
25:46
was a kind and shy young woman who had
25:48
just been working in a couple of clubs around
25:50
Anchorage for the past few years. One
25:53
thing that stood out about Sherry was the
25:55
arrowhead necklace her boyfriend had given her. Like
25:58
many other girls she was struggling to make
26:00
ends meet. So when Robert offered her $300
26:02
for nude photographs and a ride in his
26:05
plane, it sounded like a good
26:07
deal. However, as soon as Sherry got into
26:09
Robert's car, his friendly demeanor
26:20
quickly changed and she realised she was
26:22
in trouble. Robert handcuffed
26:24
and blindfolded Sherry, placing her on the
26:26
floor of his car as he drove
26:28
to a remote area. Once
26:30
they were deep into the wilderness, Robert took her out
26:33
of the car and, in a
26:35
cruel act, let her
26:37
scream and scream until she wore
26:39
herself out before shooting
26:41
her. Once again,
26:44
Robert dug a shallow grave,
26:46
but this time he took
26:48
Sherry's arrowhead necklace as a
26:50
memento. A month
26:52
later, another woman named Andrea
26:54
Altieri, nicknamed Fish by her
26:56
friends because of the fish-shaped
26:58
charm she always wore, joined
27:00
Anchorage Police Detective McSean Farrell's
27:02
list of missing persons. Andrea
27:22
Altieri met Robert at the Alaskan Bush Company
27:24
where she worked. Robert convinced Andrea
27:48
to go on a date with him to
27:50
a local mall, promising to buy her some
27:52
nice things. forced
28:00
her into his car, handcuffed and blindfolded
28:02
her and drove her to a remote
28:04
area where he coerced her into performing
28:06
sexual acts before killing her. Unlike
28:09
before, Robert decided against digging a shallow
28:11
grave. Instead, he filled a duffel bag
28:13
with dirt, tied it to Andrea's lifeless
28:16
body and shrew her into a river
28:19
where she would never be found. But
28:22
before disposing of her, he took
28:24
the fish-shaped charm necklace as
28:26
his trophy. Speaking
28:28
of trophies. So around this time, Robert,
28:31
who was always seeking new trills, he
28:34
decided to broaden his criminal activities by
28:36
dabbling in a wee bit of insurance
28:38
fraud. So he claimed that during a
28:40
break-in at his house, several hunting trophies,
28:42
certainly one where the mounted heads of
28:44
animals did be shot. He said that
28:46
they were stolen from his den in
28:48
the basement. And his insurance
28:51
scheme succeeded. The settlement of money he
28:53
got, he was able to purchase the
28:55
plane, which he shouldn't have
28:57
been flying because of. Remember before when he got
28:59
off, they said he had this psychotic disorder. Yeah,
29:01
right, right. He was using the mental illness defense.
29:03
Yes, so the medication he was on, he shouldn't
29:05
be flying the plane with it. Yeah. So
29:09
he purchased the plane, which he shouldn't have, and then he
29:11
also bought a new bakery. So he was now the owner
29:13
of a bakery on this money he got. Couldn't get away
29:15
from the powdered sugar. I just say, snort all day. So
29:18
I guess we can add insurance fraud to
29:20
his long list of crimes. The very worst.
29:22
But this little scam of his, it will
29:24
come back to bite him on the ass
29:26
later in a huge way. Oh,
29:28
you're teasing me, Keith. So
29:31
for years, Robert continued his pattern
29:33
of hunting women. During this
29:35
time, multiple women went missing. Here
29:38
are a few that are documented. Sue
29:41
Luna, Tammy Pederson, Paula
29:44
Goulding, Angela Fedorn, Teresa
29:47
Watson. The number of
29:49
women became so numerous that Robert struggled to keep
29:51
track of them all. In addition
29:53
to keeping trophies, he began marking their burial
29:55
sites on one of his aviation maps. At
29:59
this stage, Robert felt, he had
30:01
complete control, viewing himself as the
30:03
ultimate hunter. Until one
30:05
woman managed to escape his
30:08
grasp. On
30:10
June 13th, 1983, the following call
30:12
came over police radios. Uh,
30:15
investigate circumstances involving a white female, adled,
30:17
picked up by her complainant, taken into
30:19
the mush in. Female is said to
30:21
be handcuffed, has medium brown hair, wearing
30:23
a purple jacket, Levi's and no shoes.
30:26
You didn't say over. Over. Are
30:28
you over? That
30:31
was 17 year old Cindy Paulson. Cindy
30:34
informed the police that while she was
30:36
working in the Tenderloin district, making my
30:39
loins quite tender, a man
30:41
in a family car approached and offered her $200 for a
30:43
BJ. $200 for a BJ? Back in this, back in the
30:45
eighties in this
30:49
economy? Even Keith can say no to that.
30:51
He's not gay, but $200 is $200. Let me say. 100%
30:54
of the time. You can
30:57
say no to $200. The
30:59
money was just too tempting and so she got
31:01
into his car. Once again, Robert
31:03
pulled out a gun and threatened her, stating that he
31:05
would take her to his house and she must comply
31:07
with his demands or he would kill her. Upon
31:10
arriving at his house, he led her to
31:12
the basement where he handcuffed her and placed
31:14
a chain around her neck. He
31:16
then proceeded to sexually assault her for
31:18
what seemed like hours and at one
31:21
point he even inserted a hammer into
31:23
her. Unfortunately, that was
31:25
only the beginning of what Robert had
31:27
planned for Cindy. Once he
31:29
finished, he put her back in his car and told
31:31
her he was going to fly her up to his
31:33
cabin and quote, treat her special.
31:36
When they arrived at the airport, Robert
31:38
got out to move some items from
31:40
the car to his Super Cub plane.
31:43
However, he left the driver's door
31:46
unlocked. Seizing her opportunity,
31:48
Cindy opened the door and
31:50
booked it. Handcuffed and
31:52
barefoot, Cindy felt the
31:54
cold air burning her lungs as she
31:57
sprinted, but was spurred on by Robert's
34:01
of course though Robert didn't tell John the
34:03
whole truth. He just said he
34:05
had a dispute over money with a sex worker
34:07
and needed John to back him up to keep
34:10
things from blowing it out. Hey listen, I don't
34:12
want to let's not make a mint out of
34:14
a mole here folks. The
34:16
police eventually showed up at Robert's house to
34:18
question him and did a initial search of
34:21
his place. However Robert had
34:23
done a thorough job of cleaning up
34:25
and his alibi with John Henning seemed
34:27
solid. It looked like it was
34:30
going to be another which we've seen time and
34:32
time again with Robert Hanson. Hey listen, we can't
34:34
let other people live in Robert Hanson which is
34:36
the old he said she said situation where he
34:39
said tends to ultimately win out.
34:42
But not this time. Yeah at
34:44
this point the case it did seem
34:46
to really hit a dead end for
34:48
the police. They lacked solid evidence against
34:50
Robert except for the testimony of this
34:52
sex worker. However while reviewing
34:54
Robert's records they'd noticed that he'd
34:56
claimed his hunting trophies were stolen
34:59
in that insurance fraud which resulted
35:01
in a significant insurance payout. So
35:04
this discovery intrigued the police
35:06
because during the initial search of Robert's
35:08
basement they had seen several hunting trophies
35:10
mounted on his wall. Were these the
35:13
same trophies that had been reported stolen?
35:16
Did Robert commit insurance fraud? So the
35:18
suspicion was enough to obtain a warrant for
35:20
a thorough search of the house. Get back
35:22
to biting them on greedy
35:25
gusts. Greedy gusts over here. Fucking
35:27
hell he deserves it. Oh my
35:29
actions. Yeah. Police
35:32
turned his house upside down until
35:34
they finally came across something interesting within
35:37
the insulation in the attic. A
35:40
golden arrowhead necklace. A
35:42
custom made fish charm. There
35:45
was even an aviation map with
35:47
21 X's
35:49
on it. Some of which marked the
35:51
location where state troopers had previously found
35:53
bodies there. Robert Hansen
35:55
was arrested and using the map police were able
35:58
to find more than a dead end. I've
38:00
heard like some like podcast documentaries and kind
38:02
of reading stuff out online and it's nearly
38:04
worded as if like it flies him out
38:06
Into the wilderness and he's like Rambo kind
38:09
of yeah, he's not you just kind of
38:11
eating what fuck you It's like most dangerous
38:13
game style running man stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah,
38:15
but it's interesting as well what you were
38:17
saying earlier on about I said something interesting.
38:19
Thank you. Very very interesting. Thank you. I'm
38:21
very very astute point Congratulations
38:24
to you for noticing my I
38:28
am great So it was when
38:30
you said that Robert he didn't hate all women It was
38:32
only the sex workers that he despised who he's seen as
38:34
you know Subhuman and expendable because
38:36
like during this whole and when he was out
38:38
at the height of his killing his wife She
38:40
took the kids to I think about the Europe
38:43
for like the summer and he took this time
38:45
to It's like oh, I think I might do
38:47
a bit of cheating, you know, just like yeah,
38:49
you know You'd already been sleeping with tons of
38:51
sex workers, but now he was actually looking for
38:53
okay and a non sex worker Fair
38:55
a relationship. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, so he put out
38:57
like an ad in the newspaper
39:00
looking for a woman and Someone
39:02
responded I think you got a number of responses, but he
39:04
went on a date with Wonder Woman I don't know how
39:06
many days went on maybe it might even just the one
39:08
or maybe a few but he went on a date With
39:10
this woman. I mean she came back to his place And
39:12
he showed all the hunting trophies in the den and stuff
39:15
and he asked was like are you interested like we
39:17
go from? You know move move moving along go up
39:19
to the bedroom get things on she was like, no,
39:21
I'm not interested I don't do in the first days
39:23
like okay fair enough. He respected it So it was
39:25
just so weird that he was able to compartmentalize whereas
39:28
like she wasn't sex workers who respected it Yeah, like
39:30
but yeah, like it was only years later where she
39:32
then was like, oh my god I got away with
39:34
like not being like one
39:36
of his victims. Yeah, very lucky like but
39:38
exactly It's it definitely seems like he totally
39:40
compartmentalized his life between this clean cut wouldn't
39:43
hurt a fly If you're quote unquote decent
39:45
folk in his view, but if you're anything
39:47
less than that, you're like, you know vermin
39:49
Yeah, like that, you know speaking
39:51
it hurt a flight. This is completely off topic, but you
39:53
just remind me of something and it was really funny Okay,
39:55
we were in we're in the house your night. There
39:58
was a big like blue box I'll fly flying
40:00
around our kitchen. Nothing
40:02
worse, nasty. So I got like a towel and I
40:04
wrapped it up. And you know, you got to whip
40:07
it, but I never actually do it. But I rolled
40:09
it up and I whipped it. I hit it so
40:11
well. I got the whoosh. Nice. Got
40:13
the fly, I shot across the room, hit
40:16
my wife in the forehead. Killed
40:19
the fly on her forehead and fell to the ground.
40:21
And she was like, shook. She's like, what the fuck
40:23
was that? That rocks. And it was my first attempt.
40:26
I went whoosh, and the fly right across the kitchen,
40:28
hit her in the head and fell down. I
40:30
was like, yeah, I completely forgot about it. You just
40:32
said killed the fly. Oh, I'm glad you already said
40:34
that in your microphone. So we have that on record.
40:39
All right. And so ends part
40:41
two of Robert Hanson, the Butcher Baker of
40:43
Alaska. Folks, thank you so much for listening.
40:46
It means a lot to me. It
40:48
means a lot to Keith that you're here. Keith,
40:51
have we any ideas what the next, you
40:54
know, a teaser for the folks at home,
40:56
what some of the next upcoming episodes are going to be? You
40:59
sent me a couple of scripts. I sent you some
41:01
ideas of some scripts. I know a lot of
41:03
folks actually like the Mothman episode. We
41:06
really enjoyed that one too. And I see a lot
41:08
of people, a lot of positive comments about that. We,
41:11
me and Keith, really do enjoy the
41:13
more spookier ones, the urban legends, the
41:15
cryptids, the ghost stories. True crime, serial
41:17
killers are great and awesome. But sometimes
41:19
it does get very dark and very
41:21
heavy. So it's nice to lighten it
41:23
up with a bit more of a
41:25
ghost story or more of a spooky
41:27
one than an actual like Robert Hanson
41:29
story. Yeah. And I think the reason why I
41:32
like those spooky ones so much is because they're not
41:34
so heavy on facts, shall we say. So I can
41:36
put my own theories in a lot. Oh, yeah. That's
41:38
the funnest thing is to talk to you. Try to
41:40
come at me. How are you going to prove me
41:42
wrong? Exactly. I love that. Yeah, we can just shoot
41:44
your shit. Yeah, make a man's mouth off. But
41:47
no, I think some of the ones we
41:49
sent are some more modern, just one modern
41:51
story, one wack it a
41:53
duch Leo story of a guy with
41:56
a lot of tigers. And yeah,
41:58
we'll probably do some more. some
42:00
more urban legends, you had a ghost story. It's
42:03
kind of like half ghost story, half true crime story.
42:05
Which I really like, don't say the name. Don't say,
42:07
okay, okay. No spoilers, free hands at home. You
42:10
always leave them wanting more. Got to go. Every
42:12
day for different. But we're gonna
42:14
do that one. And let's see. saying
42:17
it earlier on. Did you just interrupt me? Keith?
42:20
Well, I didn't do it in the last episode. I'm shaking
42:22
with rage right now. You have no idea. I'm so glad
42:24
we're here on this podcast because I can't look at you
42:26
again. Just like, smack. Yeah,
42:29
we were talking about earlier on about cryptids. We
42:32
were saying that you were saying the Mothman, so it's
42:34
so good. But I know we kind of want to
42:36
stay away from the big ones, Bigfoot and Loch Ness
42:38
Monster. Wow, man, Loch and Load,
42:41
that concept of Bigfoot. But yeah, we probably
42:43
won't do Bigfoot and Loch Ness just because
42:45
the thing about the Mothman and what makes
42:47
this story so good, we sent this off
42:49
mic, but hey, listen, Maisie will
42:51
say it on my mic. Is that it's one
42:53
story and it's very definite about what people saw
42:55
and it's very confined. Whereas if you go into
42:57
Bigfoot, it's like you got a hundred years of
42:59
maybe I saw something in the woods or same
43:02
with Loch Ness. There's no real story there. It's
43:04
just sightings or Mothman has a proper story that
43:06
has a real life event that actually happened that
43:09
it all leads up to. Yeah, so we're looking
43:11
for good cryptids. So if you've any examples of good stories,
43:14
yesterrinos, let us know.
43:16
But in the meantime, we will keep searching because I'm sure
43:18
we'll find some. And you know what we could always do
43:20
is another cryptids urban legends part three, like we did or
43:23
part two. Like we do with Goatman and shit. Whatever was
43:25
that a fun thing. You
43:27
know what food for talk. That's some nachos for
43:29
your brain if you ask me. All
43:32
right, so listen folks, a lot of more stories
43:34
to come. So please, you
43:36
know, wait with baited Brett as I know you
43:38
already are. And we'll talk
43:41
to you next week. All
43:43
right, thanks for listening. It means a lot to me
43:45
and Keith. And yeah, listen, we'll wrap it
43:47
up. I'll see you. There you
43:49
did. He said the thing. All right, thanks guys.
43:52
Bye. It
43:56
was around this time that another woman experienced a
43:59
very similar ordeal. to Christie. However,
44:01
in this case, the woman did not escape with
44:03
her... ...bears
44:05
killing me. The woman did
44:08
not escape with her. I
44:14
gotta stop drinking beer. I haven't even drank in
44:16
a while. I had a long day
44:18
today.
