Hoodzpah Design Co. is Amy and Jen Hood, twin sisters, design power houses, and they speak at most of the major design conferences. They design, brand, strategize, and create campaigns working with companies such as Google, Disney, Stella Artois, HotWheels, Tribecca Film Festival, Vox, Delta, Asics and more.In this interview Jen and Amy talk about their start, and how it gave them the gumption to not be afraid to ask for work and get jobs.Collaboration is hugely important.As a freelancer, it's good and important to remember that your voice and perspective isn't the only one, and not always the best one. Collaborating can be a healthy reminder to expand your perspectives.How to avoid burn out.Personal work. How most of their personal work has led to actual jobs. Amy's painting have garnered them work with accounts like Hotwheels.Lesons learned:Never villainize the clients or the processBefore complaining about not liking work or certain jobs, weigh out pros and cons.Learn to have an appreciative and grateful outlook on your work and your clients.Having lower expectations can cause you to see the silver linings in jobs and life.Say yes as much as you can. It's easy to get focused on your 'one thing' and by doing various types of work, you can maybe discover that you either really love something else or you figure out what you hate and never want to do.Business Journaling:- force yourself to write things down regularly, be reflective- what am I happy about this month- what went wrong and what did we learn from that- what did we accomplish- are we stagnant, or do we need to pivot?It's important to not get so busy, you never take the time to plan forward, or evaluate how things have been going.- you get burnt out- that cycle sucks the joy outFail fast, learn Fast.You have to be humble enough to hold loosely your ideas and direction and be able to pivot if necessary. If things aren't going as well as they should, can you go a different route?It's important to get feedback, and thoughts from outside of your own bubble. Get your work critiqued.Advice on how to get a mentor.- it starts with genuine interested in what they're doing.- don't be a parasite and just take from the relationship.They talk about when they started hiring.- at a certain point, things need to be delegated so you can focus on the things that will create growth in your business- with bringing on interns, they take a lot more time because they're working for free. It's the tradeoff of less money going out but it takes more of your time to feed into them and train them.They give some advice if you're hoping to become an intern. How to approach someone or a company and ask. And what not to do.- be willing to help in any way.- don't come in with an ego. Be willing to do the grunt work.They define success for them.
