Hi. This is Fletcher Legg, producer and co-writer of PROTEUS. PROTEUS is a four part audio-drama set aboard a submarine in the year 2036. In our story the world stands on the cusp of an unparalleled medical breakthrough, as The PROTEUS crew capture a sufficient batch of the 'Crye', a creature which has been the focal point of their research for many years. The 'Crye' possess healing and regenerative properties with the power to battle and destroy degenerative disease in humans. When the story begins, we meet the team at their highest - their life's work is complete and they're taking a moment to celebrate this success; however, as we soon learn, not all is as it seems and the ship suffers catastrophic damage, forcing the crew and the vessel into a crisis situation, as the submarine plummets to depths it cannot withstand. 

With PROTEUS we set out to do things a little differently, we wanted an experience which was inherent to the formula of a typical audio drama, but also one that would incorporate a cinematic sense to its storytelling and sound design. 

We wanted the story to be a truly trans-formative experience for the listener; one in which they felt like part of the crew, having to survive the journey of PROTEUS. We set about doing this by crafting soundscapes that not only felt real, but also were willing to push that sense of scale and scope. For example when it needed to sound terrifying, we would add in a lot of elements and processing to provide the audience with this incredibly surreal environment with sounds both familiar and foreign to them. 

This has been aided no end by the incredible performances of our cast, as they became the characters and through their every emotion, line inflection, beat of tension, and so on, they take the listener on a wild and impactful ride. We couldn't have done it without them. 

Our included sample is Episode Two. This episode follows directly from our Episode One cliffhanger. Episode two opens with a flashback in which Captain McAllister attempts to persuade his long time friend and crew mate to rejoin the team for one final mission. The show then flashes back to the present chaos the ship is faced with. 

We selected episode two: forced Farewells as it is the best showcase of all of these elements. Everything we set out to achieve with PROTEUS is laid bare in this part of the story. And it is with this, that we present it to you, for your consideration. We hope you enjoy.
