This week from the car talks center for cafes.
0:39
I have been at work every day for an entire week checking cafe after cafe.
0:46
It was every week for an entire day.
0:50
Let me see. I tell you, this is grueling.
0:53
It's grueling work.
0:55
It is. It is eat those cafe.
0:58
Well, and I have been checking the cafes all around the city of Boston and I stick with my so far cafe of diesel without doubt.
1:11
Yeah. Has the best cup of Chino Corporate
1:15
average fuel economy.
1:16
Then that's what it means.
1:19
Yeah. I've been doing this wrong all week.
1:22
That's the only thing. If you would like to call us the number is 1-800-332-NINE 2 8 7 and all that other number.
1:30
What is it? 6 1 7 3 5 3 6 3 5.
1:35
All hello? You're on car talk. Who's this?
1:37
What do you want? Why you calling us? We'll don't you have anything better to do Hello,
1:40
anyone
1:40
and
1:43
We're going to care. Okay. My name is Paul Baez.
1:45
I'm from beautiful downtown Hanson, Massachusetts, which is about 26 miles from you.
1:49
Gentlemen, have an 86 GMC van V6 engine.
1:55
The only way I can keep the son of a gun running is to actually pour gasoline into the collaborator.
2:00
I
2:00
been
2:00
able
2:00
to
2:00
put
2:00
a
2:00
match
2:00
to
2:00
a
2:00
bike
2:06
To drive That way, But
2:10
boy, we can railroad some wheels on it.
2:13
Well, I mean, have you, have you checked the obvious if it runs with the gasoline, if it runs with gasoline being supplied, sort of intravenously here, will it run with gasoline being supplied the way it should be supplied from the gas tank?
2:29
I want you guys to tell me why it's not.
2:31
Oh, I mean, have you checked anything and get to work?
2:34
Well, I live where I work, so I don't have to commute.
2:39
Seriously. What happens gentlemen is the fact I can put gasoline in the carburetor and it will run.
2:44
There is gas in the tank.
2:46
I, you know, the little needle says above these, so I know there's gas in the tank.
2:49
But the fact is that I had somebody to look at it and they checked out the, the fuel pump and they said that was all right, but it is driving me.
3:00
Absolutely wacky. Well, who, who looked at this?
3:02
Like the milkman?
3:03
I mean, you say you, somebody, I mean, this isn't exactly rocket science.
3:06
When you have gas in the tank and you've got to get it to the cupboard, there's a guy have those NASA patches on No,
3:11
I had two mechanics look at it and one of them tentatively fixed it for a while, but the car has been a setback in the parking lot now to not run for file.
3:21
What does this tentative fixed consist of?
3:24
Well, I'd only have to put gas in the cabaret to get it once a week.
3:27
Now I have to put gas in the car all the time.
3:31
That's what you need to do to get it started, but it will in fact run once it starts, Ah, Well,
3:42
I'm going to suggest This
3:47
is almost a certainty. You ready for this?
3:49
The needle and seat is leaking no inside the copywriter.
3:55
Now my brother is going to tell you that this is not so, but I want you to avoid anything he says, because his voice will come from the devil.
4:03
He's going to try to sell you things that will cost you many, many dollars.
4:12
You don't need a fuel filter. The gas isn't even getting into the carburetor anymore.
4:17
No, no, no. I Mean, is any, is any of these mechanics taken the line that goes from the fuel pump to the carburetor off?
4:23
I did that myself. Why And
4:28
what happened when you did that? And you crank the engine, There
4:31
was fuel coming out. Ha ha.
4:34
Okay.
4:38
I mean, when this mechanic check the fuel pump, I assume that he checked it right at the carburetor to make sure that fuel was in fact getting right to the carburetor.
4:50
Did he do that?
4:52
I believe, oh you weren't there, you went into a place where it said insurance regulations prohibit you from seeing what we do because it is black magic and you are not allowed to know Customers
5:04
are not allowed in this area.
5:06
I mean, it's very simple paying customers.
5:08
Either. Gasoline is not getting to the carburetor or gasoline is getting to the carburetor, but it's not staying in the carburetor.
5:16
Oh no, it's not getting too, but it's not actually getting into the carpet.
5:19
The needle, the needle valve could be stuck on a boat chain baby.
5:24
So it's in fact prey prohibiting the flow of gasoline into the float chamber of the metering wall of the car, bro, What
5:30
did I say was wrong? You said it was leaking The
5:32
needle. Well doc, all leaking.
5:34
It's gotta be replaced. It doesn't matter.
5:37
Change the fuel filter Paul, that will fix it.
5:39
Now we assume that No,
5:41
he didn't. You know why it's hard to remove if you have about 80,000 miles on this, right?
5:45
No, I Don't. As a matter of fact, While
5:48
you'd have eight, if you be able to drive the damn can't drive it because you can't get it started anymore.
5:53
I should have 80 Around
5:55
the parking Lot here on the, on the mornings when it is not running disconnect, the fuel line right at the carburetor and Crank
6:01
it and find out a fuel is actually getting to the cabaret.
6:04
He Knows if it is before you even start doing anything with the carburetor, don't step on the gas.
6:11
Don't do anything.
6:12
Reach in and operate the accelerator linkage.
6:17
While you're looking inside the carburetor, you don't see nada Or
6:22
your name. You don't see the little. If you don't see any squirty scrutinies, it means gasoline never got in bang the Carburetor
6:28
with a hammer.
6:31
No, no, no, no. It's got to be, you know, when you do any furniture, upholstery go to a furniture, upholstery supply.
6:38
She's one of those Paul Merck. They have one of those cute little hammers, little brass hammer with a little magnet on the end.
6:44
That's the kind you need.
6:46
You just tap that copywriter right?
6:48
Where the fuel line goes into it.
6:50
I would say maybe twice.
6:53
Okay. Very gentle. You ready for this? I'm going to give you the taps on the microphone here.
6:56
Ready? Boom, Boom.
6:58
Got it. Now when that doesn't work and that'll Start
7:01
right up by Guaranteed that doesn't work and I guarantee this will make you feel a lot better.
7:04
Well, a lot of that 10
7:09
pounds. Good luck, Paul gentlemen.
7:11
Thanks very much.
7:13
Bye-bye 1-800-332-NINE 2 8 7.
7:17
Hello. You're on car talk. Hello? Hi.
7:19
Who's this Levy from Loveland, Loveland, Colorado Libby From
7:23
Loveland. That's good. So
7:25
what's up Libby? Lovely Libby
7:26
from Loveland. We might say yes. That's Right.
7:30
A little lovely Lindley from Loveland.
7:33
We had Tommy saver car. We have a 1976 Dodge dart.
7:38
That is not my favorite car. It's not no it's among his favorite topics.
7:43
I don't mind. It is not. And there's not even among my favorite cars because I happen to own a Dodge dart.
7:48
But that doesn't mean the 76 was among his among anyone's favorite 76 Dodge dart was among the worst cars ever made in this entire Plant.
8:00
And you know that Libby don't shoot Knows
8:02
that it's Possible.
8:05
Where's the rust.
8:07
I mean, let us find out what Libby Libby is coming from.
8:10
They used to say in the seventies, The
8:13
problem we had was we have a vibration noise we think is coming from the back of the car.
8:16
It's kind of a whirling zone.
8:18
Sound, a droning vibration.
8:22
Yeah. I know what that is. What else? Just give us some in order, we'll sit, we'll send you our response via the mail.
8:27
The Only problem we have with It,
8:29
the only problem you Have
8:31
and I'm going to see if I can reproduce the noise that you get from the back.
8:34
And I trust it. Is it worse at high speeds?
8:38
It's louder at high speeds, but it doesn't Does
8:41
it diminish if you traveling at high speed and take your foot off the gas, right?
8:45
If We slow down, it Slows down. Yeah, but it's always there.
8:48
No noise is more.
8:53
Ooh, that's Good. Really?
8:57
I was just clearing my throat in preparation for this.
8:59
Yeah. As, as lovely.
9:01
A lady as Libby from Loveland is she's giving us all the answers.
9:05
How about this Libby?
9:07
It's
9:13
not a type hitch that it's more like a Oh,
9:19
it is okay. Oh it is.
9:21
Huh?
9:23
Yeah. But when you go faster, the pitch doesn't go up.
9:27
Nope. The pitch stays. It just gets more frequent.
9:29
You
9:29
have
9:29
a
9:29
bad
9:32
Tire, a Bad tire.
9:34
We Believe so. Absolutely.
9:35
That's that's good.
9:37
I'm glad you described you. Didn't give us all the wrong answers.
9:40
You described that perfectly well.
9:43
That's
9:43
exactly
9:46
it. So we checked the tires and they don't seem to have any, how did you Check
9:49
them? What did you do to take blood pressure cultures?
9:52
What did you do to check them?
9:54
Well, we checked my husband checked it to see if it had an, any irregular wear on it.
9:58
I going to have a pocket protector.
10:00
Nobody's an engineer.
10:04
That's enough. Now. It's very, very hard to, to check tires.
10:08
I mean, sometimes it's possible to see some things on tires.
10:13
Like you might put your hand over it and feel lumps, or you might feel a bubble on the inside wall, or you might feel that it's really worn out on one side and not on the other, but very frequently tires are defective are in bad shape and you can't tell.
10:28
And what's happened is that the plies though, the different layers of rubber and whatever else is in there, I have separated inside the tire.
10:37
And what happens is they make this characteristic sound of and the truth is lots of tires do this these days.
10:45
I don't understand why.
10:47
When you find out that isn't a tire and your husband is right, then the next, most likely thing is a bad axle bearing exactly.
10:54
Now we thought maybe that might be what the Well,
10:56
what to do is take what? Take the tire off and put it someplace else on the car.
11:00
What If we don't know what tire take, Take
11:03
the two rears and put them in the front and see if you can change the dynamics of it, right?
11:08
If you put the Tuileries in the front and the two fronts in the rear, see if the noise goes, You
11:12
may even notice a front end shimmy. When you do that, that's worse than the one you already have that you hadn't noticed before.
11:18
And if the noise stays in the back, then it probably is an actual bearing, which, which is very hard to distinguish from a bad tire.
11:25
It's the actual bearing. I think your husband's right.
11:27
See you later, Libby.
11:28
Thanks For calling.
11:29
I'm going to be from Loveland.

13:06
But go ahead and read the letter.
13:07
I can see your lips starting to quiver.
13:11
The, the, the, the heck is this Is
13:15
this. Oh, he just hit me.
13:16
You remember the puzzler from last week puzzling?
13:20
Yes. There was the puzzler about the man and wife who both had exactly the same kind of car.
13:25
She used to drive north every day and go to work.
13:28
And he used to drive south every day and not even home come.
13:33
My air filter is always dirtier than yours.
13:37
Not even close. This was that I have a little lapse of memory.
13:44
I think that was a puzzler from about four and a half years ago.
13:46
But the Last one that I remember, That was a good one.
13:48
And I'll use that again some time. No, this was a town that had 200,000 people.
13:54
Oh yeah. Did we get a rancid? This one?
13:56
Just so we get an answer. You kidding?
13:58
Okay. It was a hypothetical towns, hypothetic, hypothetical, Kansas.
14:02
I know where that is. It's right near Fort Collins, Colorado.
14:04
Right. And no one in the town has more than a hundred thousand hairs.
14:07
Okay. I mean, that's the maximum, that's the most hirsute of the town's residents has a hundred thousand His
14:12
or her head. You know, that number is way off.
14:14
Actually. You don't have any hairs. There are on an average fate, a man's face, not an average face.
14:19
Not on mine. Not about 14 million on yours.
14:23
No. 35 On
14:26
your face. Yeah. Well, well I only have 8,000 on my head.
14:29
Well, that's all right in the vicinity of years.
14:32
So the average is out, but I was surprised that That
14:34
number, how many does he ever hit him? I don't know, but I think probably the most her suit head probably has about a hundred thousand hair.
14:41
You're probably right about that. So we have this town of 200,000 people.
14:45
We have various levels of, of, of herring airiness between and what a hundred thousand.
14:53
Okay. No one can have less than zero, nor more than what?
14:57
A hundred thousand. Okay.
14:58
So you got this 200,000 people.
15:00
What are the chances that two hypothetical residents will have the same number of hairs Or
15:06
these hypothetical residents of hypothetical Kansas Residents
15:09
of hypothetical. Kansas will have the same number of hairs on their heads.
15:13
Yeah. What are the chances?
15:15
Good. You want a mathematical answer?
15:18
Very good.
15:19
Technically
15:19
speaking,
15:19
you
15:19
might
15:19
say
15:23
The way we do the way we try all of our processes.
15:25
We try them. When our staff, particularly with Doug,
15:29
when Doug says, oh, we say good one.
15:33
That's a good one. But in this case, he got the answer right away, but we used it anyway.
15:37
He left a little note, Raymond, I didn't have the heart to tell you last week, but this is one of the most, the named puzzles you come up with in a long time.
15:44
Love your inestimable producer Douggie.
15:46
Well, anyway, this is a bridge Estimable.
15:50
That means he was unable to estimate Probability
15:53
here. This is a branch of mathematics known as what?
15:55
Combinate Turrell analysis. And this is a little note.
15:58
Isn't principle is a pigeonhole principle, Pigeonhole
16:00
principle, perhaps. Yes.
16:03
And thus they say that the first hundred thousand people you distribute them such that no two people have the same number of hairs.
16:09
Oh yeah. You put each one of them on a little pigeonhole, right?
16:12
You say, okay, how many here's you've got zero. Okay.
16:14
You're going to zero Home. The next guy goes in.
16:16
One. Next person goes in
16:17
So you've used up a hundred thousand residents and you've used up all of these all used up all your pigeon holes, right?
16:25
So the very next person, a hundred thousand and one person is once you one, a Hundred
16:30
thousand and one person, yes.
16:33
Must be a duplicate of one of the first or the first one.
16:36
So my answer was right then. Excellent.
16:38
Yeah. As a matter of fact, there are a hundred thousand people in this town that have the same numbers of hairs on their heads.
16:43
As the other people, they're all have a mate.
16:45
That is a group That
16:47
is the most inane, great puzzler I've ever heard.
16:50
Well, do we have a winner? Yes. A winner hit The
16:53
gardener for that one. I had nothing to do with it.
16:57
I will win it. This week is Rick Lynch of hollow, New Jersey.
17:01
And for wasting his time writing to us, he's going to get used to the contact t-shirt for an entire week and forever a skeets.
17:10
Oh yeah, because once you put this on your bumper, it will never come off.
17:12
Well, we'll have a new puzzle coming up later on.
17:14
Maybe if we're lucky, if we come up with one, but in the meantime, if you want to talk to us, the number is 1-800-332-NINE 2 8 7.
17:22
Hello. You're on Cod talk. Hi, this is Dan and Missoula.
17:25
Dan Zula.
17:27
What's up? I got a Dodge, I got a Dodge pickup truck that always starts, no matter how cold it's a 79, it's got a carburetor.
17:35
I let it run for a few minutes to warm up.
17:38
And then I start, I put it in gear, put my foot on the gas and it stalls always.
17:44
How long have you had this Dodge? I've had this Dodge since the very end of 89.
17:49
So you've had this for several years and it has done this the whole time.
17:52
Well, it does It
17:53
worse now than it was.
17:56
It's worse now. Meaning The
17:59
last few months. And of course it's been winter in the last.
18:02
Yeah. Well, that's why I'm asking when I say no the last few months and last summer, it wasn't so bad.
18:08
Well, it, it, it, it would happen last summer too.
18:10
And it would go sometimes I can go a block or two and then it'll stall and then I can't start it until my wife gets out.
18:18
And does the butterfly dance?
18:20
Yeah, Got to do is she's got to get out, open the hood, take off the air cleaner, right?
18:32
And hold the butterfly with a song.
18:36
Well,
18:38
I should add as a very beautiful shapely woman, and this puts her at some considerable risk.
18:43
You
18:43
going
18:43
to
18:43
solve
18:51
This point, your neighbors, perhaps aren't. I mean, you've, you've somewhat solved.
18:54
I mean, you've sort of solved that yourself because you know what the PR we're in the problem lies.
18:59
That's the question is how can you make it not do this anymore?
19:02
I've never found anybody who, who knew how to solve it.
19:06
Except Eric, Eric,
19:09
he's the guy who ran off with your wife And
19:13
he thinks the problem is in the choke He's
19:16
closed. Yeah. Well he might be, he might even be more than close.
19:21
Yeah. Well, the, the, the problem with it, stalling and not restarting is indeed in the choke.
19:26
And I'll tell you what, what has been, I'm going to retrace for you, Dan, the whole sequence of events that led up to this problem, the Genesis of This
19:34
problem, Genesis Say, yes, the very Genesis of this problem before you even bought it.
19:39
But maybe during your ownership, the problem began to appear.
19:45
Okay. And it'd be appeared as a hesitation.
19:47
At first, it was rather innocuous and only hesitated for a half a minute or so during the warm up period.
19:54
And then the range of the hesitation began to spread like a contagion.
20:00
It's like you're reading my mail, right? Yeah.
20:02
Yeah. And then somebody, maybe even you took it into an auto repair shop and complained to this problem.
20:08
And probably what you said with these words, Cara starts up, the trucks car starts up pretty well in the morning.
20:14
But if I really try to give it the gas, when I first started driving, it'll die sometimes, or it doesn't have the old zip, you know, something's wrong.
20:23
And the guy said, Eric might've said, let me make a minor adjustment.
20:28
He had Dan and this baby will be, Be
20:31
perfect. Right. You may have even told them when the thing is warmed up.
20:34
It runs. Okay. Right. Okay.
20:36
So what he did was he retuned up the choke and then you went back again because it wasn't good enough and he retuned it up even more.
20:42
So what happens now is it's running so rich when it's cold, that has a tendency to stall.
20:46
And then when it stalls a choke is slammed so tight that it has a tendency to flood.
20:50
And that's why it won't restart Often.
20:54
The butterfly's wet.
20:56
Yeah. With gas and Eric who dresses a little too well to get into the engine.
21:01
You know, he he'll lean over it holding his tie against his chest.
21:05
He did in there. But he did walk around the back and held his hand in front of the exhaust pipe.
21:10
And while I was running and it came away kind of wet with unburned gasoline, which led him to the, to the, to the choke Choke
21:20
is only the tip of the iceberg, Sort
21:23
of the tip. Eric said, he told me to have the carburetor rebuilt.
21:26
No, no, no, no. Don't do that.
21:28
Yeah, no, don't rebuild it. Replace it because what you need is a new accelerator pump.
21:34
That's the reason it hesitates.
21:35
I need A new accelerator.
21:37
You have a three 18 engine in this thing. Yeah.
21:39
All right. Well, there are, there are the possibility There
21:42
are simpler things. Have someone lean out the choke, you can probably do this yourself.
21:48
If that works, then that's the, No,
21:51
that will only work to keep it from stalling and not restarting, but the hesitation will be there because the choke was adjusted to mask the hesitation problem, which is going to require a new carburetor.
22:00
If you want it fixed Where
22:02
the Hesitation come from, he didn't, he knows the hesitation is, do you have hesitation, Dan?
22:08
Yeah, it does. But you know, guys, neither act, or I could find on that choke any the screw to Adjust
22:14
it, original adjust brass plate.
22:16
And we couldn't see how to adjust it. No.
22:17
Well, there is, there is no adjustment. You're going to adjust as the choke.
22:21
What? Pull off The
22:24
famous choke pull off.
22:28
Yeah. And if you don't know where to go Back
22:30
to Eric or whoever it is and have him adjust the choke by adjusting the choke, pull off.
22:36
If he doesn't understand what those words mean, go somewhere else.
22:39
He'll know.
22:42
Right. And once you've done that, my prediction is that everything will be as it should be.
22:47
Oh, Ooh, Ooh.
22:48
I just had a flash.
22:53
I Did notice that I did. I had a hot flash Pizza
22:55
again for lunch.
22:57
What happens to these often is that the passage that, that supplies hot water to the base of the carburetor gets plugged up with dunk.
23:04
It is a passage that goes from one cylinder, head to another and allows hot water to traverse and warm up the base of the carburetors to be hot and warm up the choke.
23:14
But if that gets plugged up, you can have this problem too.
23:18
Eric mentioned all these problems and what he said, well, Why
23:20
are you calling us? Can you give us X number?
23:22
In case we run into a little problem that we can't solve.
23:26
The reason he said, I have the carburetor rebuilt was, he said, you might have this.
23:29
There might be gunk in the line. That might be the choke, this and that, rebuild it.
23:33
And it'll solve all The problems. No, well, not necessarily.
23:36
It won't solve that problem with the manifolds requires removing the intake manifold, which is easy.
23:41
Tell her to take his tie off and go to town on it.
23:46
But that's what you need. That's what it is.
23:48
I, I, I recant on everything else.
23:51
Dan,
23:51
take
23:51
the
23:51
manifold
23:56
off. See you later.

25:27
Yeah, I was a mom back for a what?
25:30
Seven, eight Years. Yeah.
25:32
A few people that don't know. My brother was the guy that still be out of the truck, say my back.
25:37
Well, wait, you think anyone can do it?
25:40
I had to go to Dave. Dingers track the trailer, driving school, Dave

25:47
It's it's time for the new puzzler.
25:50
Yeah. And, and you promised us a wing Dean Puzzling
25:54
you remember the new puzzler? How
25:55
can I remember the new one? I don't even remember, But
25:57
the old one, this is just a test. I wanted to see if I said yes, I was going to ask you how you can possibly have remembered it.
26:05
This is a, this is a puzzler of old, So
26:08
I could have remembered the new puzzle.
26:09
This is like going back to the future.
26:12
It is indeed. I remember some years ago, this was some years ago.
26:16
Maybe The
26:18
long time. Some years ago. Yeah.
26:20
How was working on something like a general motors car, maybe like a Dodge, a Dodge dart.
26:25
And I was changing the customer's gas filter and because our sign was all being dry clean.
26:31
The one that says customers are not allowed in the area where we fix the cars, he was standing, looking over my shoulder.
26:36
Yeah. Making sure that I did the right thing and I was changing his gas filter.
26:40
And as I did that gas spilled onto the exhaust manifold and he, which back on leapt back in fear, Mon back on the back saying, watch out actually what he did was he ran for the fire extinguisher.
26:57
Right. And he ran to the car with the fire service you're poised.
27:00
And you said that at my face.
27:01
Cool out man.
27:04
And he said, but you just spilled gasoline on the red, hot exhaust manifold.
27:09
Aren't you afraid it's going to catch fire.
27:11
And you said, extinguish, my cigarette.
27:13
And I explained to him that I really wasn't afraid.
27:16
No. I said, no, I'm actually not afraid.
27:18
And he said, well, I'll tell you an interesting story.
27:21
Young man. I was a young man at that time.
27:23
Cause this is what one time, long time ago, some years back, he said, I spilled motor oil once on my, the manifold of this very car.
27:32
And then he burst into flame the flame.
27:35
And I knew that because his hood was all just call it.
27:38
And I said, yeah, that's true.
27:40
That could possibly happen.
27:42
And the question is, why is it that he could spill motor oil on the manifold?
27:48
Let's assume a manifold is the same temperature as what, as the time that I spilled the gas surface of the sun.
27:53
This is the side that I spill the gasoline on it.
27:55
Yeah. And he spilled motor oil on it and whew, it burst into flames yet.
28:00
I spilled gasoline, which everyone knows is quite flammable, quite, quite flammable, quite inflammable.
28:06
In fact, yes, it is quite flammable.
28:09
It's flammable and inflammable at the same time.
28:12
Isn't that a conundrum. And why is it that the gasoline does not catch fire and the motor world does?
28:18
Or am I, what, if you think, you know the answer to this or any other questions you wouldn't knows the answer to whether your lack of send it to us at puzzler tower, car talk Plaza, w B U R six 30 Commonwealth avenue, Boston.

29:11
This is Carol Anderson.
29:13
Hi, Carol. Are you from I'm From
29:15
Bellingham, Washington. Yeah.
29:17
Bellingham watching the home of grizzly tools.
29:21
The home of grizzly tools. Yes it is.
29:23
It's Certainly. Yeah. It's it must be the big industry in Bellingham, right?
29:26
Not the biggest, not the biggest.
29:29
So what's up. Well, I
29:31
have an 83 Volkswagen pickup.
29:34
Okay. Geez.
29:36
It's been a fine little car and a great little car, but lately we had a real cold winter out here.
29:41
And during the real cold weather, it started making this funny noise.
29:45
When I started in the mornings, it started going, we'll pull up and it would do this little work.
29:53
Let's do it Again.
30:01
And I've asked everyone I know mechanics included and no one can tell me why it would do sit to noise.
30:07
The noise prevail.
30:09
Only till it just starts warming up. Maybe a block and a half down the road.
30:12
It rises in pitches. I put my foot on the, You
30:15
don't have to be moving for the noise to occur.
30:20
No, I don't have to be. Ah, Good.
30:22
Good Answer. Good. Now, is this more apt to happen?
30:25
If tank is half?
30:27
I
30:29
know. I know what it is, Carol. You're going to be embarrassed when you find out what it is.
30:34
Yeah. What's the weather been like in Bellingham?
30:36
Very cold.
30:38
Ha
30:40
If you ever noticed that this doesn't happen on a warmer day, it doesn't Happen
30:44
on a warmer day. It does not happen.
30:46
Carol. We couldn't ask for a better color than you.
30:49
You have given every correct answer.
30:51
You know, sometimes we say, gee, I'll bet you, this happens when it's cold and the person says, no, it only happens when it's really warm.
30:58
And you Get the award for being the most compliant Color.
31:02
You will have given every correct answer.
31:04
Johnny, what have we got for Carol Behind
31:06
the door? A new main tab.
31:07
What Carol you have is insufficient antifreeze womb, and what's wrong with this is your water pump is seized and the belt is slipping and the water pump is trying to turn a little bit.
31:21
And when it turns in the belt slips on, it makes us woo.
31:24
Woo, woo. Sound.
31:26
How do you spell that? W w H O O P.
31:30
Alright. Whoop, Whoop,
31:32
whoop, Whoop. Okay. Have your mechanic check the concentration of your antifreeze and you'll find out you don't have enough in there.
31:37
And th that's my estimation of the situation.
31:41
Yeah. I like slipping on the water pump pulley.
31:44
Okay. Does this happen? If the clutch is depressed or you're released?
31:48
Makes no difference.
31:51
Perfect. Just one other thing is this pickup truck, white burgundy.
31:57
I just wanted to give you the chance to give one wrong answer.
32:00
So you just didn't feel like you were perfect, Nor
32:03
will you win the prize.
32:04
See you later, Carol.
32:06
Goodbye. 1-800-332-NINE 2 8 7.
32:10
Hello. You're on car talk. Hello? Hello.
32:12
Who's this? My name is Lisa And
32:14
I'm calling from Austin, Texas
32:15
from Austin. We haven't had a call from Austin in a long time.
32:20
Austin is a great town. Isn't it? What's the weather these days in Austin.
32:25
Yeah. Well, I know that anyway. Yeah, he just wanted to, he wanted to moan and groan and right.
32:30
It was one of the moan and groan. Winter has got me down.
32:32
I've got light deprivation.
32:34
I've aged a hundred years in the last six months and he looks at, What
32:38
can we do for you, Lisa? I have a 1984 convertible rabbit and it's a white, it's a white rabbit, Cute
32:47
little tail.
32:49
I'm trying to figure out how to get the top clean again, like white, you know, with all this pollution and stuff, it's sort of a grayish Kind
32:57
of insurance on this vehicle.
33:00
I don't have bomb insurance. You need A
33:02
visitor from the slasher.
33:06
It's very hot. As, as I well know, I have had now many, many convertibles, maybe three with white tops.
33:11
And I mean, there are all kinds of things on the market.
33:15
I mean, if you've taken a stroll through the local auto parts store.
33:20
Yeah. So have I, none of them work, I haven't tried pilots from my bathroom.
33:24
W what's growing on it, all the blue, black spots are all mold spores and the like, and all kinds of other grunge and little pine Sapp and whatever that just gets embedded in the grain of the vinyl.
33:38
And you'll never get that stuff out.
33:41
I've never tried, which probably will ruin it.
33:43
But if it's, if it's ruined already, who cares?
33:45
I've never tried bleach.
33:47
I tried that. You Did. And it didn't eat through.
33:51
Yeah, it did.
33:53
Now. I've got a few little holes.
33:54
Well, I believe it.
33:56
And then just wash it really good. Yeah.
33:58
What's the worst part of town down there in Austin.
34:01
There is no bad Part of town. It's a Wonderful
34:03
town in Boston. We'd have no trouble finding five or six areas where we'd leave the car.
34:07
So you'd never, as you know, I'm sure since you drive a convertible, you know that you never lock convertible.
34:12
However, in this instance, you might want to lock it, right?
34:16
The trouble is Thousand
34:17
dollars stereo system on the front.
34:21
This is great because nobody's going to want to steal this car because it's so I don't want to say ugly, but it is.
34:27
It's old, it's old and it's ugly and nobody's going to want to steal it unless you somehow entice them.
34:33
So you're going to have to leave something valuable, Run
34:36
by, leave a sign on the window that says stereo inside, Hopefully
34:40
less valuable than a new top.
34:41
Yeah,
34:41
actually
34:41
this
34:41
is
34:41
not
34:41
an
34:41
expensive
34:45
job. I would replace the whole top because you could probably do it for a couple of hundred bucks.
34:51
Yeah. They said 400 zebra stripes on them.
34:55
I Was going to suggest, what do they call that contact?
34:58
You know what I did once I had a, I don't want to bring this up because it, it, it causes me a little tear to come to my, I once had a 65 ambassador convertible and my brother, my brother's sort of lost.
35:15
So
35:15
lost
35:15
his
35:15
car
35:15
on
35:15
me,
35:15
but
35:15
it
35:15
too
35:15
had
35:15
a
35:15
white
35:21
top. And I had holes in it.
35:24
In fact, one of the holes kept getting bigger and bigger because my dog used to like to stick Her
35:29
head on those pet doors that they had.
35:32
And She thought that was a pet door. And she used a sticker, a head up through the top.
35:36
But I found once in a bath store, you know, these bed and bath stores, a big round flower shaped thing, very colorful that was supposed to be okay.
35:48
It was supposed to be used to put on the bottom of your tub.
35:51
So you don't. I skid anti-skid thing.
35:53
It turned out that I glued these babies onto the top of the convertible.
35:59
It was telling my brother had this car in original factory condition In
36:04
the Sixties, 60 seventies, eighties, all those, All
36:08
those decades. I had this car during all those decades and these things, first of all, because they're made to be in water.
36:14
The glue is very, very waterproof.
36:17
So you glue these babies onto the convertible top, and they're very colorful and friendly and exciting Even.
36:25
And now all of America knows that you are a whack all the Time
36:28
and they will not come off in the rain.
36:30
Lisa and I would have to have a piece of picker on the back window.
36:34
Yeah. Whatever. I'll send you some McGovern stickers do to put on your bumper.
36:37
See Elisa Had
36:39
some saved escapes, bumper Sticker. Bye-bye well, another hour of NPRs car talk is mercifully come to an end.

Why are you calling us? Well, don't you have anything better to
1:40
do? Which one of those questions do want
1:42
me to answer? Any one. We don't care.
1:44
Okay. My name is Paul Diaz. I'm from beautiful
1:46
downtown, Hanson, Massachusetts, which is about
1:48
twenty six miles from you, gentlemen. Paulson.
1:51
Have an eighty six GMC van
1:54
v six engine. The only way
1:56
I can keep the sun of the gun running is to actually
1:58
pour gasoline into the carburetor.
2:03
I'm an avenue for a match to a bike. And that and
2:05
that's it's hard to drive that way, isn't it? Right. You can't
2:07
even put a match to it. It won't pop up again. But
2:10
boy, what if what if we can rerun some wires
2:13
on it? Well, I mean, have you have you checked
2:15
the obvious? If it runs
2:17
with gasoline dip yeah. If
2:19
it if it runs with gasoline being supplied
2:22
sort of intravenously here, will
2:24
it run with gasoline being supplied
2:26
the way it should be supplied, like, from the gas
2:28
tank. That's why I want you guys to tell me
2:30
why it's not. Well, I mean, have you checked any
2:33
Why do you get to work? Well, I
2:35
live where I work, so I don't have work
2:37
at home. Seriously. What happens,
2:40
gentlemen, is the fact I can put gasoline
2:42
in the carburetor. Yeah. And it will run
2:45
there is gas in the tank. I you know,
2:47
the little needle says above e, so I know there's
2:49
gas in the tank. But the
2:51
fact is that I had somebody to look at it
2:54
and they checked out the the
2:57
fuel pump, and they said that was alright. Oh.
2:59
But it is driving me absolutely wacky.
3:01
Well, who who looked at this, like, the milk man.
3:04
I mean, I'm saying somebody I mean, this isn't exactly
3:06
rocket science. When you have gas in the tank and you've
3:08
gotta get it to the cupboard, then the guy have those
3:10
NASA patches on his sure it. No. I had two mechanics
3:12
look at it. Well, I mean, back. And one of them
3:15
tentatively fixed it for a while,
3:17
but the car has been set back
3:19
in the parking lot now and they're not run for file.
3:21
What did this tentative fix consist of?
3:24
I only have to forecast in the cap rate to
3:26
get a standard. Once a week, now
3:28
I have to forecast in the calendar half the time.
3:30
Oh, you mean, that's what you need to
3:32
do to get it started, but it will in fact
3:35
run once it Dartre. Did, but it
3:37
doesn't bend more. Oh. Uh-huh. Well,
3:42
I'm I'm gonna suggested. Seriously,
3:44
what do you think it might be me? So it's alright.
3:47
This is almost a certainty. Are you ready
3:49
for this? Yep. The
3:51
needle and seat is leaking. No.
3:54
Inside the carburetor. Now my brother is gonna
3:56
tell you that this is not so. But
3:58
I want you to avoid anything he
4:01
says because his voice
4:03
will come from the devil. He's gonna try
4:05
to send you things that will cost you many,
4:07
many dollars. You need motor medic. Yeah.
4:12
No. You need a fuel filter. The gas
4:14
isn't even getting into the carburetor anymore.
4:17
No, no, No. No. I mean Is any is any
4:19
of these mechanics taken the line that goes from
4:21
the fuel pump to the carburetor off I
4:23
did that myself. Why? Because
4:26
I wasn't working through it. And what happened when you
4:29
did that and you cranked the engine? There
4:31
was fuel coming out. Uh-huh. ha.
4:34
Okay. I mean, when this mechanic check the fuel pump, I assume that he checked it right at the carburetor to make sure that fuel was in fact getting right to the
4:39
mean, when when this mechanic
4:41
checked the fuel pump, I
4:43
assumed that he checked it right
4:45
at the carburetor to make sure
4:48
that fuel was in fact getting right
4:50
to the carburetor. Did he do
4:52
that? I believe Oh, you weren't
4:54
there? I wasn't there. You went into a place where it
4:56
said insurance regulations prohibit you
4:58
from seeing what we do because it is black
5:01
magic and you're not allowed to
5:03
know. No. I think it was a customer's not
5:05
about this area. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, well, here's
5:07
it's very simple. Paying customers. Either
5:09
gasoline is not getting to the carburetor,
5:12
or gasoline is getting to the carburetor,
5:14
but it's not staying in the carburetor. Oh,
5:16
no. It's not getting to, but it's not actually getting into
5:19
the carburetor. Two two because
5:21
the needle the needle valve could be stuck.
5:23
For the full cam, baby? So what's in fr?
5:25
Prohibiting the flow of gasoline into
5:28
the float chamber or the metering wall of the carbonate.
5:30
And what did I say was wrong? You said it was leaking?
5:32
The needle. Well, stuck all leaking.
5:34
It's gonna be replaced. It doesn't matter.
5:36
Okay. Change the fuel filter, Paul. That will
5:38
fix it. We we assume that he
5:40
did this. No, he didn't. You know why? It's hard to remove.
5:43
If you have about eighty thousand miles on
5:45
this. Right? No. I don't. doesn't matter if I think it's
5:47
thirty seven pounds. Well, you'd have eighty if you'd be able
5:49
to drive it down. You can't drive
5:51
it because You can't get it started anymore. You should
5:54
have eighty. I'm sick of turning Around the parking around the parking
5:56
Lot here on the, on the mornings when it is not running disconnect, the fuel line right at the carburetor and here. On the on the mornings when it is not
5:58
running, disconnect the fuel line right at
6:00
the carburetor and crank it and find
6:02
out if fuel is is actually getting
6:04
to the carburetor. It is. We know that. He knows
6:06
that. If it is, Before you even
6:08
start doing anything with the carburetor,
6:10
don't step on the gas. Don't do anything. Reach
6:14
in and operate the
6:16
accelerator linkage while you're
6:18
looking inside the carburetor. You
6:20
you don't see another. Oh, your name.
6:22
don't see the little squirty squirties. If you don't see any
6:25
squirty squirties, it means gasoline never
6:27
got in. Bang the carburetor with
6:29
a hammer. Twelve pounders.
6:31
No. No. No. It's got to be you know what? You
6:33
do you do any furniture upholstery? We
6:35
do everything. Go to a furniture upholstery
6:38
supply. Go to those Paul Murphy. They have one
6:40
of those cute little hammers, little brass
6:42
hammer with a little magnet on the
6:44
end. Yeah. That's the kind you need. You
6:46
just tap that carburetor right where
6:48
the fuel line goes into it. Okay.
6:51
I would say maybe twice. Okay.
6:53
Very gentle. You're ready for this. I'm gonna give you the taps
6:55
on the mic phone here. Ready? Boom. Boom.
6:59
Got it. it. Now when that doesn't work and that'll when that doesn't work, and that'll
7:01
Dartre right up by guaranteeing that doesn't work and I
7:03
guarantee this will make you feel a lot better. Well, yeah.
7:05
A lot of that. Okay. Don't
7:08
use that twenty ten pound stretch on it. Good
7:10
luck, Paul. Okay. Gentlemen. Thanks, Amiri. You're
7:12
welcome. Enjoy your very much. Bye bye. One
7:14
eight hundred 3329287.
7:17
Hello. You're on Dartre. Hello? Hi.
7:19
Who's this? This is Libby from Loveland. Loveland,
7:22
Colorado. Libby from Loveland. That's
7:24
good. So what's up, Libby? Lovely,
7:26
Libby from Loveland. We might see Yes. -- that's
7:29
right. I'm a little, lovely,
7:31
Libby's Loveland. We
7:33
have Tommy Savour car. We have a 1976 Dodge We have a nineteen seventy
7:35
six Dodge Dartre.
7:38
is not my favorite car. It's not.
7:41
No. It's among his favorite car.
7:43
No. It is not. It is not even among
7:45
my favorite. Cars because I
7:47
happen to own a Dodge Dodge Dartre, but that doesn't
7:49
mean the seventy six was
7:52
among is among. Anyone's
7:54
fate. Like the Seventy six Dodge Dodge Dodge Dodge,
7:56
was among the worst cars ever
7:59
made in this entire plan. And you
8:01
know that, Don't you? She only knows that. Really?
8:03
Been a good car for us. It's been a good car for
8:05
us. Well, what where's the rush? Let us I mean, let us find out what Libby Libby is coming mean,
8:07
let us find out what Libby where Libby's
8:09
coming fr. Is it Yeah. They used to say in the seventies.
8:12
Okay. The problem we have was we have
8:14
a vibration noise. We think it's coming from the
8:16
back of the car. It's kind of a whirling
8:18
zone. It found a droning -- Mhmm.
8:20
-- vibration. I know what that is. What
8:23
that? Just give us some in in order. We'll
8:25
we'll set we'll send you our response via mail.
8:28
The only problem we have with this. The only
8:30
problem you have I'm gonna see if
8:32
I can reproduce the noise that you get from
8:34
back. And I trust and III trust it. Is it worse at high Is it worse
8:36
at high speeds? It's
8:39
a lowered high speed, but it doesn't Does
8:41
it diminish if you're traveling at high speed
8:43
and take your foot off the gas? Right.
8:45
As we slow down, it slows down. Yeah. But
8:47
it's always there. Dog with
8:49
the noise is more. Oh,
8:53
that's good. Not really. I
8:57
I was just clearing my throat in preparation for just cleaning my throat in preparation for
8:59
the exercise. As as lovely
9:01
a lady as Libby from Loveland is.
9:04
She's giving us all the wrong answers. How about this
9:06
How about this, Libby? It's
9:14
not as high pitched as that. It's more like
9:19
Oh, it is it is. Okay. It
9:21
is. Yeah. Yeah.
9:23
Like that. But but when you go faster, The
9:25
pitch doesn't go up? No. The
9:28
pitch stays it it just gets more frequent.
9:31
You have a bad tire. A
9:34
bad tire. We believe so. Absolutely.
9:37
That's that's good. I'm glad you described
9:39
it. You didn't give us all the wrong answers. You described
9:41
that perfectly. well. That's exactly
9:45
exactly it. But we checked the tires
9:47
and they don't seem to have it. Oh, did you check
9:49
What did you do? Take blood pressure, throat
9:52
cultures? What did you do to check them? Well,
9:54
we checked my husband checked it to see if it had
9:56
any any irregular wear on it. And I know the husband
9:58
had a pocket protector. No.
10:00
But he's an engineer. That's
10:04
enough. Now it it's very
10:06
very hard to to check tires.
10:09
I mean, I mean, sometimes it's
10:11
possible to see some things on tires
10:13
like you might put your hand over it and
10:15
feel lumps or you might
10:17
feel a bubble on the inside wall
10:20
fr you might feel that it's really worn
10:22
out on one side or not on the other. But very frequently,
10:25
tires are defective fr in
10:27
bad shape and you can't tell. And
10:29
what's happened is that the plies, the
10:32
the different layers of rubber and whatever
10:34
else is in there have separated
10:37
inside the tire. And what happens is
10:39
they make this characteristic sound of
10:42
And the truth is lots of tires
10:44
do this these days. I don't understand why.
10:46
Well, when you find out that isn't a tire
10:49
and your husband is right, the the
10:51
next most likely thing is a bad
10:53
axle bearing. Exactly. Yeah. We thought
10:55
maybe that might be what the problem was. But what to
10:57
do is take the take the tire off and
10:59
put it someplace else on the car. What if we
11:01
don't know what tire it? Take the two rears and put them in the front and see if you can change the dynamics of it,
11:04
two rear's and put them in the front and see if you can
11:06
change the dynamics of it. Right. Okay. If
11:08
you put the two rear is in the front and the two fronts
11:10
in the rear, see if the noise goes with
11:12
it. You may even notice a front end shimmy
11:14
when you do that. Worse than the one you already
11:16
have that you hadn't noticed before this. And if
11:18
the noise stays in the back -- Yeah. -- then it
11:20
probably is an axle bearing, which which
11:22
is very hard to distinguish from a bad
11:24
tire. It's it's the axle bearing. I think your husband's
11:27
right. See you later, Libby. Thanks
11:29
for calling. So long life might Libby
11:31
from Loveland. He'll be right back with
11:33
the answer to the puzzler. Right after these messages.

heck is this? What is
13:15
this? It leads us to hear me. You
13:18
remember the pussler fr last week? Yes.
13:20
There was the governor about the the man
13:22
and wife who both had exactly the
13:24
same kind of car. She used to
13:26
drive north every day. That's right, go
13:28
to work, and he used to drive south every day.
13:31
And not that even How
13:33
come my air filter is
13:35
always dirtier than yours? Not
13:38
even close. This was that I have a
13:40
little lapse of memory. I have about
13:42
four to four years. I think
13:44
that was a fr from about four and a half years ago.
13:46
But the Last one that I remember, that I remember that That was a good was a good
13:48
one, and I'll use that again sometime. No. This
13:50
was a town that had two hundred thousand
13:53
people Oh, yeah.
13:55
Did we get an answer to this one? Just so we get an we get an
13:57
answer you're kidding? Okay. It
13:59
is a hypothetical town. Hypothetical Kansas.
14:02
I know where that is. It's right nearfoot Collins,
14:04
Colorado. Right. And no one in the town has more
14:06
than hundred thousand hairs. Okay? I mean, that's the
14:08
maximum. That's the most pursuit of the town's
14:10
residence. As a hundred thousand hairs on
14:12
his or her head. You know that number is way off,
14:14
actually. You don't have any hairs there are
14:16
on an average fate a man's face, not
14:19
an average face. Not on Not on mine. Not about
14:21
fourteen million on yours. Millions. No.
14:24
Thirty thousand on your face?
14:26
Yeah. Well, I only have eight thousand
14:29
on my head. It's all right
14:31
in the vicinity of the years. So the
14:33
average is out. But I was surprised that that number How
14:35
many does the average head have? I don't know, but I
14:37
think probably the most pursuit head
14:39
probably has about a hundred thousand head.
14:42
You're probably right about that. So we have this
14:44
town of two hundred thousand people. Yeah. We
14:46
have various levels
14:48
of of of of hairiness. Yeah.
14:50
Between zero and what?
14:52
hundred thousand. Okay. No one can have
14:54
less than zero nor more
14:56
than what? Hundred thousand. Okay?
14:59
So you got this hundred thousand people. What are
15:01
the chances that two hypothetical
15:03
residents will have the same number of hairs.
15:05
I mean, are these hypothetical residents of hypothetical
15:08
Kansas? Yes. Residents of hypothetical Kansas
15:10
will have the same number of hairs on their heads.
15:13
Yeah. What are the chances? Good.
15:17
You wanna mathematical In fact, very
15:19
good. Yeah. In fact,
15:21
technically speaking, you might say, Well,
15:23
the way we do the way we try all of our brothers,
15:25
we try the one I stand here. We take we
15:28
try the one time. We try the one time. When
15:30
Doug says, we
15:32
say, good one. That's a good a good
15:34
one. But in this case, he got the
15:36
answer right away, but we used it anyway. He left
15:38
little note, Raymond. I never had to tell you last
15:40
week, but this is one of the most named puzzler
15:43
you come up with in a long time. Love
15:45
your inestimable producer. Duggies.
15:48
Well, anyway, this is a bridge estimable.
15:50
That means that he was unable to estimate -- Yes.
15:52
-- probability here. This is a branch of mathematics known as This is branch of mathematics
15:55
known as combinatorial analysis and
15:57
and this is a No. No. It isn't principle.
15:59
It was a pigeonhole principle. A pigeonhole
16:01
principle perhaps. Yeah. And and and thus
16:03
they say that of the first hundred thousand people
16:05
-- Yeah. -- you distribute them such that no
16:07
two people have the same number of hairs. Oh, yeah.
16:10
Okay. You put each one of them on a little pigeon home.
16:12
Right. You say, okay. How many years you got? Zero?
16:14
Okay. You're growing the zero Home. The next guy goes next guy goes
16:16
in one, next person goes in
16:17
two, da da da da da da. Got it. So you used up a
16:19
hundred thousand residents and you've used up
16:21
all of a hundred thousand pigeon Gail's. It's
16:23
all you use up all your pigeon holes. Right.
16:25
So the very next person, the hundred thousand and
16:28
one person, is it once? One
16:30
of a hundred thousand and
16:32
one person -- Yes. -- must be a duplicate
16:34
of one of the first of the first of the first of all. So
16:36
my answer was right then. Excellent. Yeah. As a matter of fact, there are a hundred thousand people in this town that have the same numbers of hairs on their a matter
16:39
of fact, there are a hundred thousand people in this
16:41
town that have the same numbers of hairs on their heads
16:43
as the other people they all have are mate
16:46
That is a great man I mean, that is
16:48
the most unnamed great puzzler I've
16:50
ever heard. Well, do we have a winner yet?
16:52
A winner hit You can think of Garden Garden. For
16:54
that one, I had nothing to do with it. I will win
16:57
winner this week is Rick
16:59
Linski of How old, New Jersey
17:01
And for wasting his time writing to us, he's gonna
17:03
get used to the Kantok t shirt for an
17:06
entire week and forever
17:08
a skis save the skis. Yeah. Because once you
17:10
put this on your bumper, it will never come on. You
17:12
don't. Well, we'll have a new puzzle coming up later
17:14
on. Maybe if we're lucky, if we come up with one, but in the meantime, if you want to talk to us, the number is 1-800-332-NINE 2 8 Maybe if we're lucky, if we can come up with one.
17:17
In the meantime, if you wanna talk to us, the number is
17:19
one eight hundred 3329287.
17:22
Hello. You're on kind talk? Hi. This is Dan
17:24
in Missouri. Dan was Zula.
17:26
Yeah. What's up? I got
17:28
a Dodge. I got a Dodge
17:31
pickup truck that always starts
17:33
no matter how cold it's a seventy nine,
17:35
got a carburetor. I let it run
17:37
for a few minutes to warm up and then
17:39
I Dartre put it in gear. Put
17:41
my foot on the gas and it Gail's. Always.
17:44
How long have you had this dodge? I've had this Dodge since the very end of had
17:46
this dodge since the very end of eighty
17:48
nine. So you've had several
17:51
years and it has done this the whole time. Well,
17:53
it doesn't no. It's worse
17:55
now than it was. It's worse
17:57
now meaning Well, in the
17:59
last few months. And, of course, it's been winter in
18:01
the last few Yeah. Well, that's what I'm asking when
18:03
I say no. The last few months
18:05
and last summer, it wasn't so bad.
18:08
Well, it it it would happen last
18:10
summer too. And it would go sometimes I can go a block or two and then it'll stall and then I can't start it until my wife gets and it would go sometimes I can
18:12
go a block or two, and that'll stall, and
18:14
then I can't start it. Until
18:17
my wife gets out and does the
18:20
butterfly dance. Yeah. That
18:27
is what she gotta do. She's
18:29
gotta get out open the hood, take off
18:31
the air cleaner. Right. And hold the butterfly
18:33
up with this thumb. Well,
18:37
I'll Alright. I should add as a very
18:39
beautiful shapely woman and this puts
18:42
her at some considerable risk. I'm
18:49
eager to I'm eager to solve the problem. You're gonna
18:51
solve this point of neighbors perhaps hard. But I mean, you've, you've somewhat
18:53
I mean, you've you've somewhat solved. I mean,
18:55
you've sort of solved it yourself because you know
18:57
what the where where in the problem lies,
18:59
the question is how can you make it not
19:01
do this anymore? Well, I've never found anybody who, who knew how to solve I've never found anybody
19:04
who who knew how to solve
19:06
it except Eric. Eric?
19:10
He's the guy who ran off with your wife. And
19:13
he thinks the problem is in the choke.
19:15
Of course, he's close. Yeah. Well he might be, he might even be more than
19:17
Well, he might be he might even be more
19:20
than close. Yeah. Well,
19:22
the the the problem with installing and
19:24
not restarting is indeed the choke.
19:26
And I'll tell you what what has been I'm gonna
19:28
retrace for you, Dan. The whole
19:30
sequence of events that led up to this
19:32
problem. The genesis of this problem -- Genesis
19:35
might say. Yes. -- the very genesis of
19:37
this problem. Yeah. Before you
19:39
even bought but but maybe during your
19:41
ownership, the problem began to
19:43
appear. Okay?
19:46
And it it appeared as a hesitation.
19:49
At first, it was rather innocuous and only hesitated
19:52
for half a minute or so during the warmer
19:54
period. And then the range of the hesitation
19:56
began to spread like a contagion.
20:00
It's like you read my mail. Yeah. Right,
20:02
man. Yeah. And then somebody,
20:04
maybe even you took it into an auto repair
20:06
shop and complained of this problem. And and
20:08
probably what you said with these words, car
20:11
starts up. The truck's car starts up
20:13
pretty well in the morning. But if
20:15
I really try to give it the gas
20:17
when I first start driving, it'll
20:20
die sometimes fr it doesn't have the
20:22
old zip, you know? Something's wrong and guy
20:24
said Eric might have said. Alright.
20:26
Let me make a minor adjustment he
20:29
had Dan, and this baby will be
20:31
perfect. Right. You may have even told him when
20:33
the thing is warmed up. It it runs okay. Right.
20:36
Okay. So what he did was he richened up the
20:38
choke and you went back again because it
20:40
wasn't good enough and you richen it up even more.
20:42
So what happens now is it's running so rich
20:44
when it's cold that it has a tendency
20:46
to stall and then when it Gail's, it Choke
20:48
is slammed so tight that there's a tendency flood,
20:51
and that's why it won't restart. Yeah. In
20:53
fact, if and the butterfly is
20:55
wet, Yeah. With gas
20:57
and Yeah. -- Eric who who
20:59
dresses a little too well to get into
21:01
the engine. You know? He he'll
21:03
lean over it. Holding his tie against his
21:06
chest. Yes. He's sitting in there, but he did walk around
21:08
the back and held his hand in front of the
21:10
exhaust pipe. And
21:12
while I was running, and it came away
21:14
kinda wet with unburned gasoline --
21:17
Yes. -- which which led him to the to the to the
21:19
choke. Sure. Wow. But the choke is only the tip
21:21
of the iceberg. No. That's
21:23
what Eric said. He told me to have the carburetor rebuild.
21:26
No. No. No. No. Don't do that. Don't
21:28
don't rebuild it. Replace it. Because
21:32
what you need is a new accelerator pump. That's
21:34
the reason it hesitates. need a new
21:36
accelerator. You have a three eighteen engine of
21:38
this thing? Yeah. Alright. Well,
21:41
there are there are other possibilities. There are
21:43
simpler things. Have someone
21:45
lean out the choke. You can probably
21:48
do this yourself. If that works, then
21:50
that's the end of your problem. No. That will only
21:52
work to keep it from stalling and not restarting.
21:54
But the hesitation will be there because the choke
21:56
was adjusted to mask the hesitation problem,
21:59
which is gonna require a new carburetor
22:01
if you wanted fixed. Wait. Where where the come
22:04
from? He didn't he knows the hesitation. Is do
22:06
you have hesitation, Dan? Yeah. Yeah, it
22:08
course. Yeah. No, guys. Neither Erica or I
22:10
could find on that choke? Any
22:13
the the screw to Adjust it, original adjust brass There is no
22:15
adjustment. Last plate. And we couldn't see
22:17
how to adjust it. No. Well, there is there is no
22:19
adjustment. You're going to adjust as the choke what
22:21
pull off. The
22:25
famous choke pull off. And
22:27
pull off. Yeah. And if you don't know where to it's
22:29
it's go back to Eric fr whoever
22:32
it is and have him adjust the choke
22:34
by adjusting the choke pull off.
22:36
Alright. If he doesn't understand what those words
22:38
mean, go somewhere else. No. No. No.
22:41
He'll know. Okay. Right. And once
22:43
you've done that, my prediction is that
22:45
everything will be as it should be.
22:48
00000000I just
22:50
had a flash. I
22:53
did notice I did. I had a hot flash I had a hot flash
22:55
pizza again fr lunch. What
22:58
happens to these often is that the passage
23:00
that that supplies hot water to the base of the
23:02
carburetor gets plugged up with
23:04
gunk. It is a passage that
23:06
goes from one cylinder head to another
23:08
and allows hot water to traverse and
23:11
and warm up the base of the carburetor's to be
23:13
hot and warm up the choke. But if that gets plugged
23:15
up, you can have this problem too. You
23:17
know, Eric mentioned all these problems. And what
23:19
he said was Why are you calling are you calling us? Mhmm. Could
23:21
you give us Eric's number in case we write the little
23:24
problem that we can't solve? He's what
23:26
the reason he said to have the carburetor rebuilt was,
23:28
he said, you might have this. There might be gunk in line.
23:30
There might be the choke this and that. Rebuild
23:33
it, and it'll solve all the problems? No. Well,
23:35
not necessarily. It won't solve that problem with the manifolds requires removing the intake manifold, which is won't solve that problem
23:37
with the manifold. So it requires removing
23:39
the intake manifold, which is easy. Tell
23:42
her to take his tie off and
23:45
go to town on it. But that's that's what
23:48
you need. That's what it is. III
23:50
We can't do everything else. Then
23:55
take the man to fold off. See you
23:57
later. Bye bye.

We're back. This is NPR's current talk with click

25:19
One back. And we're headed to answer your questions
25:21
about cars, car repair, and exhibition
25:24
baseball. You you were you making
25:26
reference to your former career as a mom back?
25:28
Yeah. I was a mom back for a was a mom back for, what,
25:31
seven, eight years. Yeah. Fr people people that don't know
25:33
my brother was the guy that's still behind the truck say, Mom
25:35
back. Well,
25:38
hey, you think anyone can do it?
25:40
I had to go to Dave Dinger's track
25:42
to Gail's driving school. They
25:45
might happen there. Dink dinkling. Dinkling.
25:47
Dinkling. Anyway, it's it's time for the new
25:49
puzzler. Yeah. And it's and
25:51
you promised us a wing ding
25:54
Puzzling you remember the new remember the new puzzler? How can
25:56
I remember the new one? I don't even remember the old
25:58
one. This just a test. I wanted to see if you're saying yes.
26:01
If I said yes, I was gonna ask how you
26:03
could possibly have remembered it.
26:05
This is a this is a puzzler of old.
26:08
So I could have remembered the new Well, this
26:10
is like going back to the future. It is is it
26:12
is indeed. I remember some years ago, and this
26:14
was some years ago. What,
26:17
baby? The longest time was some years
26:19
ago. Yeah. I was working on something like
26:21
a General Motors car, maybe like
26:23
a Dodge. Yeah. A Dodge Dodge. And
26:25
I was and I was changing the customer's
26:27
gas filter. And because our
26:30
sign was out being dry clean, the one that says, customers
26:32
are not allowed in the area where we fix the cars,
26:34
he was standing looking over shoulder -- Yeah.
26:36
-- making sure that I did the right thing.
26:39
And I was changing his gas filter.
26:42
And as I did that, gas
26:44
spilled onto the exhaust manifold.
26:46
And he leech back fr leaped
26:48
back in fear. Lawn
26:50
back. He mauled back, saying,
26:53
watch Oh, actually, what he did
26:55
was he ran for the fire extinguisher. Right.
26:58
And he ran to the car with the fire extinguisher
27:00
poised. And you said What did it at my face? You
27:02
said, Cool out,
27:04
man. And he said, but you just spilled
27:06
gasoline on the red hot exhaust
27:09
manifold. Aren't you fr? It's going
27:11
to catch fire. And you said We extinguish
27:13
my cigarette, and I explained to him that I really
27:15
wasn't afraid. No. I said, no, I'm actually not I said geez. No. I'm
27:17
actually not afraid. And he said, well,
27:19
I'll tell you a interesting story. Young
27:21
man. I was a young man at that time because
27:23
this is what? A long time ago.
27:27
Some years back. He said, I spilled
27:29
motor oil once on my the manifold
27:31
of this very car. And
27:33
then burst into flame other at the flame
27:35
and I knew that because his hood was all discolored.
27:39
And I said, yeah, that's true. That
27:41
could possibly happen. And
27:44
the question is why is it that
27:46
he could spill motor oil on the
27:48
manifold? Let's assume the manifold is the same temperature.
27:51
That's what? Is the time that I spilled the gas surface
27:53
of the sun? This is the time that I spilled the gasoline
27:55
on it. Yeah. And he spilled motor
27:57
oil on it and It
27:59
bursts in the flames, yet. I spilled gasoline, which everyone knows is quite flammable, quite, quite flammable, quite I spilled gasoline,
28:02
which everyone knows is. Quite
28:04
flammable. Quite quite flammable. Quite
28:06
inflammable. In fact, yes, it is.
28:09
Quite quite flammable. It's flammable and
28:11
inflammable at the same time. Isn't that a
28:13
conundrum? And why is it that the gasoline
28:15
does not catch fire? And
28:18
the motor world does? Or am
28:20
I what? No. If
28:22
you're thinking all the answer to this, or any
28:24
other Everyone knows the answer to whether

you'll echo. Sent

29:12
This is Carol Anderson. Hi, Carol. How
29:14
are you from? I'm from Bellingham, Washington.
29:17
Yeah. Bellingham watching the home
29:19
of Grizzly Tools. The
29:21
home of Grizzly Gail's. Yeah. It is. Yeah.
29:23
It certainly is. Yeah. It must be the big
29:25
industry in Bellingham. Right? Not
29:28
the biggest. No. Not the biggest. So
29:30
what's up? Well, I have an
29:32
eighty three volt so I can pick up. Okay.
29:35
Jeez. And it's been a fine
29:37
little car and a great little car, but lately,
29:39
we had a real cold winter out here. And
29:42
during the real cold weather, It
29:44
started making this funny noise when I started
29:46
in the mornings. It started
29:48
going with pull pull up, and it would do this little
29:51
loop. Let's
29:53
do that again. Sounds like a skit in heat.
29:56
Yeah. And
30:01
I've asked everyone I know and mechanics
30:04
included and no one can tell me why it would do
30:06
such noise. How long does the noise prevail?
30:09
Only till it just starts warming up. Maybe
30:11
a block and a half down road. It rises
30:13
in pitch as I put my foot on the gas
30:15
pedal. You don't have to be moving for the noise
30:17
to occur. Is that true? No.
30:20
I don't have to be with you. Good
30:23
good answer. Good now. Is this more have
30:25
to happen if wait wait. Hank is half
30:29
I know I know what it is. Carol, you're gonna be
30:31
embarrassed when you when you find out what
30:33
it is. Yeah. Yeah. What's the weather been like in
30:35
the weather been like in Bellingham? Very
30:38
cold. Ha
30:40
If you ever noticed that this doesn't happen on a warmer day, it doesn't you ever notice that this doesn't happen on a warmer
30:43
day, It doesn't happen on a warmer day.
30:45
It does not happen -- Sure. -- when the cars
30:47
were warmer We couldn't ask for a better
30:49
color than you. You have given every correct You have given every correct
30:52
answer. You know, sometimes we say, gee,
30:54
I'll bet you this happens when it's cold and if a
30:56
person says no, it only happens when it's really
30:58
warm. You get the award being
31:01
being the most compliant caller. You have given
31:03
every correct answer. Johnny, what have we got
31:05
for Carol? What's behind the door? A new
31:07
Mate ten one. Carole, what you
31:09
have is insufficient antifreeze.
31:13
And what's wrong with this is your water pump
31:15
is seized and the belt
31:17
is slipping. Uh-huh. And
31:20
the water pump is trying to turn a little bit. And
31:22
when it turns and the belt slips on, it makes this,
31:24
whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Whoa. Sound.
31:26
How do you spell it? WH00P.
31:30
Alright. That's a combination mark. Whoop. Whoop.
31:33
Whoop. Okay. Have your mechanic check the concentration
31:35
of your antifreeze, and you'll find out you don't have
31:37
enough in there. And that that's
31:39
my estimation of the situation. Yeah.
31:42
I like slipping on the water pump
31:44
pulley. Okay. Does this
31:46
happen if the clutch is depressed or you're released?
31:49
Make no difference. Makes no difference. Perfect.
31:51
That's what it is. Just one other thing.
31:54
Is this pickup truck
31:56
white No. I don't. I
31:58
just wanted to give you the chance to give one
32:00
wrong answer so you just didn't feel like you were
32:02
perfect. And all would you win the prize?
32:05
See you later, Carol. Thanks. Goodbye bye.
32:08
One eight hundred 3329287.
32:10
Hello. You're on Dartre Hello. Hello.
32:12
Who's this? My name is Lisa, and I'm calling
32:14
from Austin, Texas. Well, Lisa from
32:16
Austin. We haven't had a call from Austin in
32:18
a long time. Austin is a
32:20
great town, isn't it? Yeah. What's the weather these
32:23
days in Austin? Oh, it's sunny and warm.
32:25
Yeah. Well, I know that He knew that anyway, which is hard. Yeah.
32:27
He just wanted to yeah. He wants
32:29
a moaning growing. just wanted the moaning growing
32:31
winter has got me down. I've
32:33
got light deprivation. I've aged
32:35
a hundred years in the last six months. And he looks
32:38
too. What can we do for you, Lisa? I have a 1984 convertible rabbit and it's a white, it's a white rabbit,
32:40
I have a nineteen eighty four convertible rabbit.
32:43
It's a white. It's a white rabbit.
32:45
Oh, yeah. It was It doesn't Cute little have cute little tail in
32:47
the back. I'm trying to
32:50
figure out how to get the top clean
32:52
again, like, wipe. You know,
32:54
with all this pollution and stuff, it's sort of a
32:56
grayish Do you have insurance on this vehicle?
33:00
I don't have bomb don't have bomb insurance. Right. You need A visitor from the
33:02
visitor visit from the slasher. It's
33:06
very hot. As as I well know,
33:08
I have had now many, many convertibles, maybe
33:11
three with white tops. And
33:13
I think there are all kinds of things on the market.
33:15
I mean, have you taken a stroll through the
33:17
the local Auto Dartre store? Everything.
33:20
Yeah. So Avai. None of them work. I haven't tried pilots from my been
33:22
tried pilots fr my bathroom. Yeah.
33:24
You know, because what what's growing on it? All
33:26
the blue black spots Yeah. Or old
33:28
mold spores and the like and all
33:30
kinds of other grunge and little pine
33:34
sap you know, and whatever that just
33:36
gets embedded in the grain of the vinyl.
33:38
Right. And you'll never get that stuff out.
33:40
You know what I've never tried, which probably will
33:42
ruin it, but if it's if it's rolled already, who
33:45
cares? I've never tried bleach.
33:47
I tried I tried that. You did. And it
33:49
didn't eat through the top? Yeah, it did.
33:53
Now I've got a few little holes. I
33:55
thought, well, I'd bleach it and then just wash it
33:57
really good. Yeah. What's the worst part of
33:59
town down there in Austin. There is no bad is no bad
34:02
part of town. It's a wonderful town. I mean, in
34:04
Boston, we'd have no trouble finding five or
34:06
six areas where we'd leave the car. You
34:08
never as you know, I'm sure, since you drive a
34:10
convertible, you know that you never lock convertible.
34:12
Right. However, in this instance, you might
34:15
want to lock it Right. The trouble
34:17
it leave, like, a thousand dollar stereo.
34:20
This is gonna want to fr This is great because nobody's going to want to steal this car because it's so I don't want to say ugly, but it Right. Because
34:22
nobody's gonna wanna steal this car because
34:24
it's so I don't wanna say
34:26
ugly, but it is. It's old.
34:28
It's old and it's ugly, and nobody's gonna wanna
34:31
steal it unless you somehow entice
34:33
them. You're gonna have to leave something valuable.
34:36
Right? Leave a sign in the window that says stereo
34:38
inside. Something hopefully
34:40
less valuable than a top. Yeah.
34:44
Actually, this is not an expensive job. would
34:46
replace the whole time. Okay. Because
34:48
you could probably do it for a couple hundred bucks.
34:51
Yeah. They said four hundred. Yeah. I mean, what's
34:53
the difference? Zebra stripes on them.
34:55
You could. I was gonna suggest what do they call a contact
34:57
paper. You know what I did once I had a, I don't want to bring this up because it, it, it causes me a little tear to come to my, I once had a 65 ambassador convertible and my brother, my brother's sort of You know what I did once? I had I
35:00
don't wanna bring this up because it it
35:02
it causes me a little tear to come to my
35:04
eye. I once had a
35:07
sixty five ambassador converted.
35:13
And my brother my brother's
35:15
sort of lost So
35:18
it lost his car on me, but
35:20
it too had a white top. Mhmm.
35:22
And I had holes in it. In
35:24
fact, one of the holes kept getting bigger and bigger
35:26
because my dog used to like to
35:29
stick her head up through. Do you know those pet
35:31
doors that they had? Well, she thought that was a
35:33
pet door. She used to stick her head up through
35:36
the the top, but I found
35:38
once in a bath store. You
35:40
know these bed and bath stores?
35:42
Mhmm. A big round
35:44
flower shaped thing. Very
35:46
colorful that was supposed to be Okay.
35:49
No. No. It's supposed to be used to put on the bottom of
35:51
your tub, so you'd like kid. Nancy
35:53
skid thing. Right. It turned out that
35:55
I glued these babies onto the
35:57
top of the convertible. It
35:59
was Now you already told my brother had this car
36:02
in a original factory condition. Wait
36:04
a minute. Was this in the sixties? You
36:06
sixty, seventy, eighty's, all those decades. All
36:08
those decades. I had this guy during all those
36:11
decades. And these things, first of all, because
36:13
they're made to be in water, The
36:15
the glue is very very waterproof. Mhmm.
36:18
So you glue these babies onto the convertible
36:20
top and they're very colorful and
36:23
friendly and exciting
36:25
even, and now all of America knows that
36:27
you are a whack out time, and they will
36:29
not come off in the rain. Lisa? Then I would
36:31
have to have a piece sticker on the back window.
36:34
