1:51

Studio Today is our sound effects were

1:53

about Lisa whose name stands for a

1:55

live in studio audience and. Ah

1:58

ha ha. That

2:00

Lisa, What's the matter? What

2:02

do you ask? Well could it be the

2:04

fact that you're saying of outs hot

2:06

hot as it's you burned yourself or

2:08

something? Oh. That yeah I was just find

2:11

some sound events in case we need that

2:13

sound for this episode. Oh well, I

2:15

see. I'm not sure we'll need anything like

2:17

that, but I'm glad you're okay and not

2:19

in pain. Yep, all good and happy

2:22

to be prepared with sounds you never

2:24

know. Yeah now know what I do

2:26

now is and I have a listener

2:28

question that I receive may I printed

2:30

out now? Oh please to. See

2:36

who? Has

2:38

some. I would. Just

2:40

ripped the south for. You. Okay,

2:44

Here we go. What is

2:46

your favorite dog breed? s.

2:48

Oh, that's easy and obvious. My

2:51

favorite dog breeders that dog. He

2:53

was a little bit of rose

2:55

and mustard and peanut butter. Crunchy

2:57

To the losers. ah. But I

2:59

think our listener is referring to the

3:01

animal, not the food. So what kind

3:03

of dog breed as in mammals? Oh

3:06

ah yeah, And that case,

3:08

my favorite dog breed would

3:10

be the English Sheepdog. Know

3:12

why is that? Have you

3:15

ever had sheepdog? Hi! It

3:17

is savory pies with zest

3:19

doubles and mashed potatoes and

3:21

sheepdog. So good.

3:24

I think you mean suffers?

3:26

Hi Matt seats. Dot how

3:28

potato potato. Those sea

3:31

dogs really hit the

3:33

spot. Sea dogs. Say

3:35

so You do not have a favorite dog

3:37

breed that you don't eat like a breed

3:40

that you'd have a subset. Of have.

3:42

Why on Earth would I keep a

3:44

dog as a pet? Them

3:47

are sometimes you are just such

3:49

a silly billy. Disassemble. I

3:51

guess you sort of answer that question and

3:53

I think we should move on before we

3:55

learn about all the other dogs you like

3:57

to eat. Can you please tell us how

3:59

are again. All right,

4:01

let me just make a note to

4:03

pick up some border collie for my

4:05

lunch tomorrow. Ooh, great. Ooh, and a

4:07

side of pause, of course. All right,

4:09

every week we bring on two grownups.

4:12

One is an expert, the

4:14

other is a expert liar.

4:17

And it's the job of an

4:19

expert human child to help us

4:21

expertly figure out who is who

4:23

expertly, because no one can

4:25

expert a liar better than a kid.

4:28

What are we lying about today, expert

4:30

goldshades? We are lying

4:32

about coral reefs, underwater

4:35

structures made up of tiny sea

4:37

animals. And we're going to learn all

4:39

about coral reefs along with our contestant

4:41

today. Who might that be, Lisa? Our

4:44

human-child contestant is a

4:46

10-year-old who loves to ski, Mikaela

4:48

Wall. Welcome, Mikaela. How

4:50

are you? Good. Excellent. So

4:52

you like to ski like on

4:55

snow downhill? Yes. Okay.

4:57

And how old were you when

4:59

you started learning how to ski?

5:01

I think like maybe four. Wow,

5:03

you were young. And

5:06

is that something someone taught you how to do, or you

5:08

kind of figured it out once you got up there? I

5:10

can't really remember, but I think my dad taught me.

5:13

Got it. And is it true that

5:16

you like to ski on certain kinds

5:18

of mountains? Yeah. What

5:20

kinds are those? Not toasty,

5:22

but pretty steep mountains. They're

5:24

usually black diamonds and sometimes

5:26

blues. So which one

5:28

is more steep, the black diamond or the blues?

5:31

The black diamonds. I like to ski on

5:33

the flat diamonds. I don't know if you

5:35

ever... It's just a nice walk across the

5:37

field. Yeah, that sounds good

5:39

for me, too. Yeah. When was the last

5:42

time you went skiing, Mikaela? Two days ago

5:44

because I was on a vacation. And

5:47

where did you go for your vacation?

5:49

Beaver Creek, Colorado. Nice. And there's a

5:51

lot of good skiing there? Yeah. Lovely.

5:54

Well, welcome home. I hope you get back on

5:56

the slopes again soon. We do want to learn

5:58

some more fun facts about you. and

6:00

we're going to do it big fib style

6:02

playing our game Two Truths and a Lie.

6:05

You, Michaela, will tell us three things about

6:08

yourself. Two of those things will be true,

6:10

one will be a lie,

6:12

and we have to figure out which

6:14

is which and how good of a

6:16

liar you might be. So, Michaela, in

6:18

no particular order, please tell us your

6:20

two truths and one lie. I once

6:22

repelled down a waterfall. I have a

6:25

14 year old sister named Maddie, and

6:27

I have a pet dog and a

6:29

pet fish. Oh wow, I

6:31

really want to hear about repelling down

6:33

a waterfall. I hope that's true. Don't

6:35

you, Lisa? Yeah, I hope it's

6:37

true too. And what do you think is

6:39

the lie? Well, let me think about this. We're

6:42

gonna start from the bottom and move our

6:44

way up. She claims she has a pet

6:46

dog and a pet fish, which is believable.

6:49

I know these creatures can coexist, but

6:51

I'm imagining if you had a pet

6:53

dog and a pet fish in the

6:55

same tank, after a while, the pet

6:57

fish would jump out. And

7:00

we already know that she likes

7:02

to ski, and skiing happens on

7:04

mountains. But when it's warmer,

7:06

all the snow melts and you

7:08

get waterfalls. And if

7:11

you have a dog and the dog chases

7:13

the fish out of the tank and you're

7:15

near a waterfall, you might be the kind

7:17

of person who wants to rappel down the

7:19

waterfall to get the fish and rescue it.

7:22

And you probably wouldn't have a older sister

7:24

if you did that because they would say,

7:27

no, don't do it, don't climb down the

7:29

waterfall. So the one about the sister, that's

7:31

a lie. Okay,

7:35

all right, Michaela, which one of

7:37

those things is actually a lie?

7:39

That I have a pet dog

7:41

and a pet fish. Wrong, Lisa,

7:43

wrong. Someone set my lie

7:46

detector wrong. Apparently so. Do you

7:48

have any pets? Yeah, I have a pet

7:50

dog. Okay, and your pet dog's name is

7:52

what? Penny. Penny. Hi,

7:54

Penny, if you're listening. Hi, Penny.

7:57

Shout out to Penny. So that means you do

7:59

have a 14-year-old. one-year-old sister named Maddie,

8:01

but it also means that you once

8:03

repelled down a waterfall. So what does

8:05

that mean? Explain. It's like

8:07

you're hanged onto a rope when you

8:09

rock climb, but instead of rock climbing

8:12

up, you're sort of rock climbing down

8:14

except you're not really climbing. You're just

8:16

jumping off. Right, but holding onto a

8:18

rope. Yeah. And did you

8:20

do it because you had a fish and it escaped?

8:22

No. I was

8:24

totally wrong. Okay. Right, you were completely

8:27

wrong. And so was that scary at

8:29

all? It sounds like maybe you were

8:31

up pretty high. At first I was

8:33

really scared, but then when I did

8:35

it, it was so fun. Really? So

8:37

you would do it again? Yes. Very

8:40

cool. Okay, well, I think

8:42

we're all warmed up. I think you

8:44

fooled Lisa, which means you know

8:46

how to tell a lie, which means you

8:48

might be able to spot a lie, and

8:50

it might help if you know a little

8:53

bit about coral reefs. Is that something you

8:55

know anything about? Not really, but I have

8:57

seen them before. They're pretty cool looking, aren't

8:59

they? Yeah. Yeah, I do want

9:01

to learn all about them. And we are going to

9:03

do that with our experts today. So

9:06

Lisa, would you kindly play some

9:08

welcome music for our coral reef

9:10

experts? Yeah, I'm going to

9:12

do it shortly. Okay. Okay,

9:14

our first expert is David Vaud.

9:17

David, please introduce yourself to Michaela.

9:36

Hi, Michaela. I'm Dave Vaud, and

9:38

I'm a marine biologist that studies

9:40

coral reefs. Thank you very

9:42

much. Let's meet our second expert,

9:44

Bianca Paulson Barnes. Bianca, please introduce

9:47

yourself to Michaela. Hi, Michaela. I

9:49

am Bianca Paulson Barnes, and I'm

9:51

a professor of marine biology. Thank

9:53

you very much. I'm

10:00

a hot seat, I'm a hot seat. I'm a drum

10:02

and lick guitar. I'm a hot,

10:04

hot seat. Hot, hot, hot, hot, hot. Are

10:07

you okay, Lisa? Yeah, I'm just playing the

10:09

sounds of someone burning themselves on something hot.

10:12

Because it's hot seat time. Oh,

10:14

right. I guess you did need that sound

10:16

after all. Okay, well, yeah, it's hot seat

10:18

time. And that is when we

10:20

put our experts on the hot seat while they

10:23

answer Michaela's questions. Lisa, whom should we put on

10:25

the hot seat first? Uh, let's see. B.P.B.

10:28

Bianca Paulson-Barr, very good. Yeah, well, you

10:30

know, us fans call her B.P.B. Sure,

10:32

sure. Alrighty,

10:34

Michaela, what is your first question for

10:36

Bianca? What is

10:38

something that most people don't know about coral

10:40

reefs? I think that most

10:43

people don't know the similarities between

10:45

coral and viruses that grow inside

10:47

your body. I

10:49

actually teach a seminar with

10:51

someone from another department at my college

10:55

about how they are living

10:57

things that grow on top

10:59

of other things. And so

11:01

the way the viruses grow in the body

11:04

is similar to how coral will grow in

11:06

the ocean. And so we can learn a

11:08

lot about the growth of the spread by

11:10

studying coral reefs. Fascinating. Thank you

11:12

very much. Alright, now, Michaela,

11:14

it's back to you. This one's for both

11:16

of you. What is a typical day

11:19

at your job? Well, my

11:21

typical day is probably not typical

11:23

for anybody else in marine science.

11:25

Because I work with corals, I

11:28

actually grow them in tanks. So my typical

11:30

day is to check on the water to

11:32

make sure it's flowing and clean. And then

11:34

at the end of the day, be able

11:37

to make sure that the temperature is fine. We

11:39

don't want them to get too hot. And that

11:41

they're growing fast enough so that we can make

11:43

many of them to plant back on the reef.

11:46

Okay, Bianca, same question. Well,

11:48

a typical day for me, I

11:50

will usually check in with my

11:52

lab and my teaching assistants who work with

11:54

me, just to understand what

11:56

the lesson plans are for the week and also

11:59

for the lab. What were researching.

12:01

So we also grow curls and

12:03

labs the try to understand how

12:06

quickly. They're growing, but they do

12:08

grow quite slowly, so that's that's interesting.

12:10

And then I'll also depending on the

12:12

day I'll be teaching a class I

12:15

might have to present at a conference,

12:17

so it really does depend. Thank you

12:19

very much. This is Say David what

12:22

is the most amazing thing you've ever

12:24

seen at Acquire? Race Well once I

12:26

made a mistake and it was

12:28

to drop and break the curl

12:30

into little pieces and instead of

12:32

being hurt that started to grow

12:34

ten to twenty times faster than

12:36

normal and we now use that

12:38

as a method of making corals

12:40

grow faster you break some we

12:42

cut them into little pieces with

12:44

a special I saw for making

12:46

poor or jewelry that we use

12:48

has to cut pieces called micro

12:50

fragments that then make more corals

12:53

and just like your skin gross

12:55

fast. When you're wounded, the coral gross

12:57

much faster as well. That

13:00

Howard's with people Do Deborah? Not

13:02

so much now we do with

13:04

seal sometimes but we don't grow.

13:06

New parts. Okay, about the

13:08

implementing. Yeah. It is. Anyway, back

13:10

to usually since this is for

13:13

been quite a stir Financing that

13:15

has happened. It's your job I

13:17

remember I was I had a

13:19

dies. And I saw that there is a

13:21

school as parents s which is a special. Says

13:24

that. Will sometimes eat

13:26

poor Also that helps with the

13:28

growling like Dave was talking about

13:30

that when they have a lot

13:33

to say Poo yes several similar

13:35

statement under Bush you may also

13:37

sets of everybody can say to.

13:42

Him since he. Just.

13:45

Went to face two hours after

13:47

they eat the coral states. I

13:49

just all of the losing material.

13:51

Except for the limestone which is

13:53

Little rock's is very funny because

13:55

it was very colorful is blue

13:58

and purple. Sad Base agree, but

14:00

there is so much of it because it

14:02

was a big school assess and feals. Tough

14:04

to laugh with the snorkel that it was

14:06

very funny. Wow. Factor: Uma Kayla This

14:08

is simple but how did you get

14:11

interested in call. Race! oh I thought

14:13

interested in coral reefs when I

14:15

was about your age. Actually I

14:17

started watching shows like Jacques Cousteau

14:19

and when I saw that underwater

14:21

world it just looks so marvelous.

14:23

So at eleven years old I

14:25

wanted to try and learn how

14:28

to scuba dive said Sac. Then

14:30

people didn't learn how to scuba

14:32

dive until they were in adults

14:34

and so I knew early on

14:36

that I wanted to dives. and

14:38

it was very lucky that my

14:40

father worked at. A university and

14:42

he raised money for the university for

14:45

a marine lab and he said of

14:47

him raised a million dollars would they

14:49

take his son on a quarrel expedition

14:51

and they said yes and he raised

14:54

the money and I got to go

14:56

on my first coral expedition at thirteen

14:58

years old. A cast your

15:00

dad a million dollars to do that if

15:03

he was raising money. For the development

15:05

of a new marine science station

15:07

in the Caribbean room and care

15:09

than ever. Yes, Lisa and you'd

15:12

donate a million dollars or me?

15:14

Well, we compare with a fiber

15:16

and see where we go. Okay,

15:18

that's recovered anywhere, as is my

15:20

Ss fan. And yeah, I think

15:23

I came as a good compromise.

15:26

Okay, excellent. This

15:37

episode of The Big Fib is brought

15:39

to you by PrettyLitter. Hi

15:41

everyone, it's Deborah Goldstein and I'm

15:44

here with Jess Fisher. Hi everyone!

15:46

15:48

cat's name? The.

16:09

Crystals are super absorbent and they trap

16:11

16:15

though under Save a Robot birds and

16:17

for Lisa sometimes his emissions are the

gate. Well the live doesn't make a

22:02

about that, Michaela, but I feel like there's a lot

22:05

we need to get to the bottom of here. So

22:07

let's do some fact-checking. David, which

22:10

lies did you hear that really took

22:12

a toll on you? Okay,

22:16

actually, there was one that

22:19

I said that could be

22:21

mistaken if a coral

22:23

has a disease and it turns

22:25

white. I said bleaching. I think

22:27

the question was looking more for

22:29

the stony coral rapid tissue loss

22:32

disease, sometimes called

22:34

skittles. Oh, skittles,

22:36

okay. And the other is

22:38

that corals are actually not 3% of

22:41

the bottom of the ocean. They're actually less than 1%. And

22:45

the body of water that's in

22:47

between Africa and Asia is not

22:49

the Mediterranean Sea. It's the Red

22:52

Sea, where there

22:54

is a lot of beautiful corals

22:57

and a type of reef that grows

22:59

up from an atoll. If

23:01

it doesn't reach the surface, it's called a

23:03

fringing reef. Oh, thank

23:05

you. And viruses do

23:07

not grow like corals. They're

23:10

completely different organisms. But

23:12

it's actually funny that corals are

23:14

made up of three different phyllis.

23:17

They're a plant, an animal, and

23:19

they are actually made up of

23:21

a community of microbes, but it's

23:23

usually bacteria. And community

23:25

divides in half by fission.

23:27

And that's not the way

23:29

viruses reproduce. Viruses

23:31

explode and release many small

23:34

replicas of themselves. Okay.

23:37

Bianca, tell us all the ways you

23:39

coasted by with your lives. You

23:42

asked me to name a soft coral, and I

23:44

said ponytails of the sea. That's

23:46

not real. Yeah, David, do you know a name

23:48

of a soft coral? Most of

23:50

them have scientific names, but there are ones

23:53

that are nice and feathery. They're called sea

23:55

plumes. Like that. Thank

23:57

you. Bianca, back to you. coral

24:00

reef island is not called the Grand

24:02

Rig at all. Do you know what

24:05

that one is? Christmas Island at all.

24:07

The Christmas Islands at all. Very good

24:09

stuff. Tell us today

24:11

a little bit about plants a million

24:14

corals. Well people are starting to

24:16

grow corals to plant back onto the

24:18

reef. However most people are

24:20

doing it in small quantities, a

24:23

few thousand at a time, but it's

24:25

a big ocean. Hence it's

24:27

our mission to show what plant a

24:29

million corals is possible. I've planted over

24:31

100,000 already. Wow.

24:33

And I hope to grow and

24:35

produce one million by another

24:38

year and a half, two years tops.

24:40

Thank you so much for that and

24:42

good luck. Yes, well on our way.
