Hello Pilgrims , and welcome to the Camino

0:02

News Update . It is Wednesday , april

0:04

10th , and we have a packed show

0:07

for you today . It is an international

0:09

show , and what ? What is that ? Is that

0:11

sunshine ? We

0:13

have a great show for you today . We're coming

0:16

from all over the world John is

0:18

in Malta , rocco is

0:20

in Japan , lindsay's been on

0:22

the Invierno and I'm here in

0:24

beautiful , sunny Santiago

0:26

. Now I've got to say this city

0:29

is beautiful when it's drenched

0:31

with rain and it's beautiful

0:33

when it's sunny . I've been out

0:36

here just watching pilgrims come in

0:38

, and what a joy it is to see their

0:40

faces . The

0:42

Way my Way is coming to cinemas

0:44

across Australia on May 16th

0:47

. Next Tuesday , though . They begin

0:49

a national screening tour , and it is sold

0:51

out in several locations . Here's

0:54

a sneak peek of a podcast interview coming out

0:56

next week where I spoke with filmmaker

0:58

Bill Bennett . I wanted to see how he's feeling

1:01

this close to his big movie premiere .

1:03

But first let's just take a moment to

1:18

look at parts of the movie trailer

1:20

. I see this walk as

1:23

an 800 kilometer long cathedral

1:26

.

1:28

This is the Camino . Miracles

1:30

happen all the time .

1:40

Safe journey . Welcome Eh welcome .

1:48

Welcome . Yes , sweetheart .

1:51

I'm a pilgrim .

1:57

What would you say is your

1:59

mission with this movie ?

2:05

Like why did you want to make it

2:07

? I didn't want to make it .

2:09

Lee you to make it . You didn't want to make it , okay , so did you want to write

2:11

the book that that it was based on

2:13

oh yeah , I wonder , I want to write the book

2:15

.

2:15

And the reason I want to write the book was because I came

2:17

back from that first camino , the camino

2:20

frances , really confused and

2:22

I thought that the book might help , um

2:25

, ameliorate that confusion

2:27

. You know , I needed to

2:29

find out why I had put myself

2:31

through that whole ordeal and in writing the

2:33

book , I hoped that , um , that that

2:35

would meet that , meet that need

2:38

, and it did in a way . But

2:40

then what happened was a distributor , a film distributor

2:43

, uh , read the book and it had a deep impact on

2:45

him . And he contacted me and he said

2:47

, bill , I think there's a movie in this . And I said , no , there's

2:49

not . He

2:52

said , bill , this book , I know this book is

2:54

going to turn into a movie and it's going to be really great . You

2:56

know , the book really impacted me and if you can get

2:58

the book onto the screen , then

3:01

you're going to have a movie that people are going to want to see . And

3:03

I said I can't do that .

3:04

I can't make a movie about myself , it's just not

3:07

possible and how do you feel

3:09

right now , sitting here knowing that it's

3:11

premiering next week , when you didn't even want

3:13

to do it , yet you

3:15

did it ?

3:18

um , well , number one , I feel

3:20

, if

3:22

I can say I feel a sense of achievement in actually

3:24

completing it . You know , because

3:26

it's really hard to make a film on the Camino

3:29

, and I realize now

3:31

why there hasn't been an

3:34

English language movie , not a documentary

3:36

, but a movie made on the Camino

3:39

since the way , which was in 2011

3:41

, I think , you know , something like 13

3:44

years . And the reason that there hasn't

3:46

been is because to mount a

3:48

full-scale movie production

3:51

, you know , and

3:53

to do it on the Camino in

3:55

its entirety , which is what I wanted to do , I

3:57

wanted to traverse the entire Camino

4:00

is , I

4:02

mean , it's really hard . You've got trucks , you've got

4:04

infrastructure . You know you can't

4:06

shut down the Camino because you're making

4:08

a movie , you know . So

4:10

I had to find a way to

4:12

work within the rhythm and

4:14

the life

4:17

force and the energy of the Camino , if you like

4:19

, you know , to tap into it , not to stop

4:21

it , not

4:23

to try you

4:29

know , to tap into it , not to stop it , not , not , not to try hmm , I

4:31

love that to tap into it rather than to stop it . I mean , basically

4:33

, I want to get to a point of invisibility

4:35

where we melded into

4:38

the energy and that , so

4:40

that that current , that

4:42

life force , current of

4:44

the Camino , we

4:46

needed to meld into it and become invisible

4:48

, so that we became a part of it , if

4:52

that makes sense .

4:53

Yes .

4:55

And that's really hard to do .

4:56

Yeah , and do you feel

4:59

good about the outcome

5:01

?

5:02

I do . Yeah , look , I've got to say

5:04

I'm very proud of the film . I

5:06

think it's a beautiful film , you

5:09

know . I think we have

5:11

managed to capture the

5:13

true transcendent beauty of

5:17

the Camino , and in that beauty

5:19

, of course , lies the spirituality , because

5:21

God lives in nature .

5:25

Hello everyone . This is John in a very rainy Santiago

5:28

and , as you can see from the weather forecast

5:30

for the next week , it's going to be dull

5:32

. Thankfully the rain is going to stop

5:35

, they tell us , and thereafter the

5:37

weather will improve . However

5:39

, the weather hasn't put off the pilgrims and

5:41

they continue to pile into the city

5:43

37,000 pilgrims this

5:45

year so far . That's 31%

5:48

more than in the same period

5:50

last year . Now the graph tells

5:52

us that the pilgrim numbers have gone

5:54

up and they haven't come back down yet , as we

5:56

expected after Easter time . But

5:59

the schools have been on holiday , so have parents

6:01

, they're now going back children

6:03

to school , parents back to work , and

6:06

we think that the numbers will come down

6:08

. But we'll see . I have

6:10

, however , have not been in the rain . For the last week

6:12

I've been on the beautiful island

6:14

of Malta . Now , the

6:16

island of Malta was the headquarters

6:18

for some considerable time of the

6:20

medieval order , the Knights of

6:22

St John , who were formed to

6:25

protect pilgrims and to

6:27

care for pilgrims . So a little

6:29

later I'll tell you more about

6:31

my visit to Malta and the new Camino

6:33

route there .

6:36

And here's Rocco .

6:39

Two plane rides , four trains

6:41

and now just got off a bus from

6:44

Kitenabe and I'm here in

6:46

Takejiri , which

6:48

is where the trailhead begins

6:50

for the Nakahechi , the version

6:53

of the Kumano Kodo , which

6:55

I will be undertaking this week

6:57

. There we go Along

7:01

the way . At key sites there are these

7:03

wonderful little wooden shelters

7:06

that are set up

7:08

to hold the

7:11

stamps that you stamp , your booklet

7:13

, to show progress

7:15

along the way and when we get

7:17

to the end of

7:19

the pilgrimage , to qualify for our dual pilgrimage status

7:21

. To qualify for our dual

7:23

pilgrimage status , signs

7:30

as to where to go are all fine and dandy , but the Kumano Kodo folks take it

7:32

to another level and actually put up signs

7:35

where you are not on

7:37

the Kumano Kodo , and you should look

7:39

around and see where the real path is . Incredible

7:50

singing of frogs . One of the elements that adds to the challenge

7:52

of walking the Kumano Kodo and

7:56

that obviously slows you

7:58

down are just

8:00

the kilometers

8:03

worth of exposed route . So

8:06

you have to watch your footing at all

8:08

times . And this isn't

8:10

a race , it's a pilgrimage

8:12

. Embrace the moment

8:14

and enjoy .

8:18

Simply awe-inspiring

8:20

sunset here from my

8:22

room at the Kirinosato

8:25

Takahata Organic

8:28

Lodge . End

8:31

of my short but steep

8:34

first day and

8:38

, given jet lag and all of the travel

8:40

in the last 72

8:42

hours , this was just what the

8:44

doctor ordered . 72

8:50

hours this was just what the doctor ordered . Now

8:54

off to dinner .

9:09

Here's Lindsay .

9:15

Hi there , lindsay , here again . As

9:18

you can hear , I've arrived in sunny Santiago

9:20

Today . I've

9:23

enjoyed watching pilgrims arriving

9:25

in this ancient city . Today , I've enjoyed watching pilgrims

9:27

arriving in this ancient city . Recently , a number of people

9:29

have asked me for advice as they

9:31

are contemplating doing the Camino

9:33

in Vienno at some point

9:35

in the future . I say

9:37

great , if you have more Caminos

9:40

in you , the in Vienno is a

9:42

must . Today

9:45

, I thought I'd put together some things you

9:47

need to know before heading off . These

9:50

are my top five picks . One

9:52

for the Galician Zunta

9:55

albergues even though they have a kitchen

9:57

, they do not have any kitchen utensils

10:00

, which includes cutlery . However

10:03

, they all have microwaves . 2

10:06

. The Zunta albergues do

10:09

not have blankets , so you are likely

10:11

to need a sleeping bag . 3

10:14

. Some days are quite long

10:16

between services , so be

10:18

prepared to carry sufficient food and

10:20

water . 4

10:22

. On the invierno , cash

10:25

is king . Take lots of

10:27

smaller denominations , as

10:29

Donativos won't be able to break

10:31

50 euro notes . 5

10:34

. Most private albergues

10:37

are able to be booked via

10:39

WhatsApp , which , combined

10:41

with Google Translate , makes

10:43

the whole process easy if you're

10:45

not confident with your Spanish language skills

10:48

. The invierno

10:50

is definitely one of my top favorite

10:52

routes . It's easy enough , beautiful

10:55

and the people are very friendly

10:58

. I do hope you enjoy it Until

11:01

next time . Buen camino

11:03

.

11:05

Here's Johnny Walker .

11:08

I'm here on this very beautiful island of

11:10

Malta , my first visit there . But

11:13

not my first encounter with my old

11:15

friend James Portelli , who's the

11:17

chairman of the local

11:19

pilgrim association Sheer Kamini

11:21

here on Malta , and

11:23

they've developed a Camino route

11:25

Camino Maltese , james . Could

11:27

you tell us about it ?

11:29

Sure thanks for the invitation . It

11:31

is one of the youngest

11:34

but also one of the longest caminos , because

11:36

it starts in the old

11:38

town of Rabat and Medina

11:40

in Malta , but then crosses Malta

11:43

, crosses Sicily , Sardinia

11:46

, and through Barcelona

11:48

, through the Catalana

11:50

Ragonese , onto the Frances , all the way

11:52

to Santiago . So it's 3,600

11:55

kilometers .

11:56

How much of this Camino have you walked ? I've

11:59

walked .

11:59

Malta , I've walked Sicily , I've

12:01

walked part of Sardinia and I walk

12:03

part of Spain . So

12:05

this spring

12:08

I'll be continuing part of

12:10

Sardinia again , and

12:13

in summer I'll continue part of Spain .

12:15

And James . A

12:17

number of associations are developing cabina routes

12:20

in their own country , for example . In

12:22

England they've invented the way of St James

12:24

, but it's not an extraordinary

12:27

work . I understand that

12:29

your work here is very authentic

12:31

.

12:32

Yes , it started with a pilgrim in the

12:34

17th century . Yes , yes , indeed

12:36

, it did . The pilgrim's name

12:38

was Don Juan Benegas de Cordoba

12:40

. He was the custodian

12:42

of St Paul's Grotto in Rabat

12:45

, just outside the old city of Medina , and

12:48

Grand Master Alaphina Court

12:50

in the very early 1600s granted

12:53

him a credential , basically a document

12:57

of safe passage , to travel from

12:59

Malta all the way to San

13:03

Giacomo in Galicia that's what the

13:05

document says for

13:08

him to visit the tomb and the

13:10

sanctuary of St James .

13:11

And .

13:12

James , this is very much the home of the altar

13:14

of St John , and they were funded

13:17

to welcome pilgrims and

13:19

provide support to pilgrims , and all I've

13:21

got to say is thank you for your hospitality

13:23

to me as my first customers to Malta

13:26

.

13:26

Thank you very much , always a pleasure

13:28

.

13:30

All right for our calendar of upcoming events

13:32

. The online Santiago de Compostela

13:34

Book Club will have their next monthly meeting on

13:37

April 27th . This meeting

13:39

is with Steve Walther , author of

13:41

Sacred Blisters . He's so much

13:43

fun you don't want to miss this one . There's

13:45

a link in the show notes to join the group . Now

13:47

here's a public service announcement for all English-speaking

13:50

pilgrims . Pilgrim Mass in English

13:52

is with Father Manny . It's held daily

13:54

at 10.30 am , except on Wednesdays

13:57

. Camino Companions is open daily

13:59

now from 10.30 am to 5 pm

14:01

. Both are located in the pilgrim

14:03

office where you get your . Compostela pilgrim

14:06

house on ruanova is now open from

14:08

10 am to 6 pm daily , except

14:10

they're closed on wednesdays and sundays . Well

14:13

, that's it for this week . Pilgrims hope

14:15

to see you in santiago soon

14:17

.
