Viola Desmond was a Black Canadian businesswoman and civil rights activist who became a symbol of the struggle against racial segregation in Canada. One of the most famous incidents in her life occurred in 1946, when she was arrested for refusing to leave a whites-only section of a movie theater in Nova Scotia.
