H D T I see a out. Everybody.

0:37

Welcome to the Dungeon Cast! I'm Brian, I'm

0:39

William. This is the podcast when we

0:41

talk about everything tabletop roleplaying games and today

0:44

we're going through a step by step process

0:46

of building. A dungeon. Hebron.

0:58

A Will are you doing today? I'm swell.

1:00

Your. For your swells, well how are

1:02

you? I'm I'm fabulous. Excellent. Well what's

1:04

a dungeon? What? Is a

1:06

dungeon. That's a

1:08

good question. What the fuck is that?

1:10

Does he? Because you have you ever

1:12

tabletop. And. On top of that,

1:15

you're going to role play a game

1:17

Shirk. Yes, Absolutely Absolutely. You are so

1:19

eager to make up this world and

1:21

run adventures through that ensured through them

1:23

as Dungeons Dragons demands and eventually going

1:25

to get to the Dungeons part of

1:27

the Dragons game? Yes, Absolutely. So what

1:29

it? What is a dungeon? The you.

1:32

What? Is a dungeon to me? Is.

1:36

A H correct? Sure.

1:38

Usually. Although. I think there

1:40

can be some some alternative cases. I think

1:42

it's a structure. Designed

1:45

to be filled

1:47

with challenges, obstacles,

1:50

hazards, And goals

1:52

Flush Rewards. For

1:54

a character or group of characters,

1:56

yeah, I think that's pretty apt.

2:00

Our the thing and I got off the top

2:02

of the don't want I got I would say

2:04

a is that when you refer to it being

2:06

a structure that that can be more of like

2:09

a metaphysical term I guess where yeah that's yeah

2:11

they're so definitely structure to it but with that

2:13

structure look like you can have an open air

2:15

dungeon. You can have an open it as you

2:17

can have of of a maze of. Like.

2:20

Through thickets the thickest ones absolutely

2:22

either have ah traditionally I think

2:24

of like we think of a

2:27

dungeon in. A. In

2:29

fantasy, as like underneath the

2:31

castle there is a a

2:33

Santa Lord tunnel system or

2:35

some sort of labyrinth grid

2:37

style full of. Rooms.

2:40

And. Prisons.

2:42

And things that should not be at

2:44

levels above in the normal common area

2:46

as I guess. sure, but it's full

2:48

of dark passively stuff. Yeah, that's

2:50

yeah. that's a classic old school dungeon for

2:52

sure. Yeah, which is as relevant today is

2:55

it always has been. Yes, So beneath like

2:57

to the dungeon with you and they go

2:59

like throw you in the brig and centrally.

3:01

Yeah, But yeah, that's what

3:03

that's what it is. how do get in your world.

3:05

And. You have to the have to

3:07

put them there are when you're designing these

3:10

things and since they can be pretty much

3:12

anything anywhere near are they. I think it's

3:14

also important to note that elephant characters necessarily

3:16

realize their clinical in a dungeon all the

3:19

time, so I think sometimes it's it is.

3:21

In world obvious and true yelling. Other times

3:24

they are just for example, you know we're

3:26

gonna talk about bergamine. Ah Pokemon often uses

3:28

corporate buildings as dungeons. Yeah and you have

3:30

to climb through corporate buildings and is that

3:32

a dungeon? Absolutely a big bureaucratic mess and

3:34

if is as a little or summers your

3:36

teleporting and costs are crossed. floor tiles be

3:39

of hey we're doing it Yeah absolutely it's

3:41

true As a lot of like it's it's

3:43

a good ones who you need see cards

3:45

to access certain areas and you may or

3:47

may not ever go to a room and

3:49

find an item that they're So we in.

3:51

Super gross. Ago we did a crashed

3:54

the starship and we did a couple

3:56

crash. Starship says dungeons yellow and as

3:58

players kind of recognize you know you

4:00

talk about it. The hey guys were

4:02

doing a dungeon crawl today. Yeah exactly

4:05

by as characters Judas in this. Spread.

4:08

Out space where we gotta go into this

4:10

area and do a thing. We have a

4:12

goal. Yeah, usually it's It's got some expanse

4:15

and you can spend some time. They're always

4:17

the session so that's to the kind of

4:19

the parameters of what in the game means

4:21

by a dungeon. My thank sure Agra! Ah,

4:24

let's get a no. Please learn. the

4:26

notes is written okay. let's do it. So

4:28

step I said building in a bad way.

4:30

This is a patron voted episode. I think

4:33

the mainland database runs ah development a long

4:35

time coming. This is probably the the

4:37

longest I. Run the longest pulled

4:39

pulled nominated. Top one has been

4:41

in the fight fighting for as

4:43

a top spot for like half

4:45

a year. You want to make

4:48

episode suggestions you can do so.

4:50

A patron.com/the Dungeon Castro will puts

4:52

up a poll for the patron

4:54

voted episode of month. Bob patrons

4:56

nominate topics and them they are

4:58

put into another poll where they

5:00

are voted on Indian than we

5:03

do. we do the topic indeed.

5:05

So semi sept engine building the

5:07

first. Step The first step that I take and

5:09

guess I should have a little bit of a cabbie

5:11

out at the beginning. This I'm this is how I

5:13

do it Guys this may not be how you do

5:15

it if may not be a that works for you

5:18

or maybe way that really nance has are you do

5:20

it arm All I can do is tell you how

5:22

I do it and hopefully help to guys. Yeah.

5:24

And I and I'll help. Thank

5:27

you! I'm so the first thing

5:29

I do, Step Number one: Decide

5:31

on the dungeon that you are

5:33

building or kind of structure or

5:36

location. Isn't this? Why is the

5:38

party going to said dungeon Or

5:40

location and what dwells now within

5:42

this dungeon? Structure, Location or every

5:45

dungeon have a story has a

5:47

history. or has a reason

5:49

for being what is this dungeon story

5:51

neon the reason this is the first

5:54

step for the most part is because

5:56

this information is going on form the

5:58

rest your decisions and a lot

6:00

of your decisions later on

6:02

in the step-by-step process much much easier

6:04

and much more intuitive I think yeah

6:07

to give an example I've recently built

6:09

a dungeon for my ongoing 5e campaign

6:13

and this dungeon is essentially

6:16

two dungeons stacked on top of

6:18

each other the top portion of this dungeon

6:20

the front facing property if you will is

6:23

a temple to the

6:25

elemental eye of evil or the elemental evil

6:28

eye the elder eye there's dune and

6:32

it does serve as that and it is run by

6:34

cultists but it is also the

6:37

protective layer for the real

6:40

dungeon which is underneath which

6:42

is a secret laboratory where

6:44

the cultists of the elder

6:46

eye are performing dark experiments

6:48

using powers drawn

6:50

from the environment around them and

6:53

that is done through the temple above the

6:55

laboratory the dreaded double dungeon the double dungeon

6:58

right and there's a few other things going

7:00

on here like there is a

7:02

nearby dragon in the region that's not pleased

7:04

about this this new structure in its area

7:06

and wants this thing to be gone and

7:09

the cultists have taken measures of putting up

7:11

a ward that prevents the dragon from approaching

7:15

and there are a number of other things to take

7:17

into account here when

7:19

it comes to this location because this is all

7:21

gonna form the rest of it yeah it's

7:24

something that should there's inherent risk

7:26

into going into these places because

7:29

there are inherent rewards typically that

7:31

are whether they're treasure story but I'm

7:33

sure we'll get yeah we'll get into the

7:35

construction and the setbacks and all that yeah

7:37

so the next thing step two

7:39

is the side on the style of presentation what

7:41

I mean by this is is this dungeon going

7:45

to be presented in strictly theater of the mind

7:48

is this going to be a fully

7:50

drawn out in grid paper or take it it to

7:52

me step by step you

7:54

know I think this is probably easiest on

7:56

a on a on a VTT where

7:59

like definitely has have infinite space because I

8:01

almost never do a fully drawn out grid map

8:03

just because I don't have the space on my

8:05

literal table. You

8:08

know when it comes to drawing on grids, doing

8:10

a preliminary sketch off of a grid on

8:12

just blank paper is probably better to sort

8:14

of conceptualize like yes I have a room

8:16

here that connects to these rooms and then

8:19

you can kind of write your footages down

8:21

and then decide how much space you need

8:23

for your map. Sure. You're not running over

8:25

the edge of the map and ah dang

8:27

I'm out of tiles. Right. And

8:29

that being said even when I do run Theater of the

8:31

Mind I usually have my own little private map

8:33

on my own little tiny grid paper that I

8:35

have drawn out. Yeah. To help me keep track

8:37

of things. I do tend

8:40

to in my personal games because our

8:42

recorded games are different that's a different

8:44

beast but in our personal games I

8:46

like to do the in-between where for

8:49

any room that location

8:51

and a grid is

8:54

useful and useful

8:58

or even required I will

9:00

draw out that room and for everything else I

9:02

will use Theater of the Mind because I can

9:05

draw a room on a single battle

9:07

grid sheet and then swap it out for the next

9:10

one when it comes up and I find that to

9:12

be a better easier presentation I

9:14

think a better one for my game

9:16

my table. I will have

9:18

like I did a Mad Mage campaign

9:20

for a while it's done now but

9:23

I had the map

9:25

from the book and that was kind of

9:27

my personal map and I would explain the

9:30

dimensions and of the room to

9:32

my players where the doors are and all that stuff and

9:35

I believe the players handbook of the DMG one of those

9:38

tells you you should assign somebody to map

9:40

making for the table so

9:42

I'll give them materials whether it's paper

9:45

pen or like marker and whiteboard but

9:47

one of my buddies had a surface

9:49

like a Windows tablet and he had

9:52

a map making program because of the

9:54

line of work we're in he

9:56

just had that so he was doing it in CAD People.

10:00

Might be published last. an. Industry

10:02

that use Autocad so he feels most you can

10:04

you can. He was going into cat and drawing

10:06

when I was explaining all of that he was

10:08

showing it to me like did I get it

10:10

right and I'll be like you should add this

10:12

and they're see here. Actually just look at it,

10:14

you know is how? Okay and so he had

10:17

his own drawn version of the first level of

10:19

the Mad Much as Seven Over Cool and about

10:21

our yeah and I think that's a great way

10:23

to kind of go about it and get a

10:25

rough generalization of what the dungeon looks like as

10:27

you play through it because the players shouldn't know

10:29

what the whole dungeon looks like if they've never.

10:32

Been there before does that is one of

10:34

the drawbacks of using full of grid a

10:36

grid system them are fully drawn out. grid

10:38

of the map is. You. Know it's

10:40

hard to hide all the different hallways and

10:42

twists and stuff through his news of a

10:44

to like role Twenty which helps you do

10:46

that. Yeah and if you have like what

10:48

is called the dim them like ah you

10:50

have as it's the fog of war fog

10:52

of war yeah man the them and very

10:54

little and I do use that in games

10:56

that are on sometimes yeah it's cool like

10:58

illuminating areas like okay you did the room

11:00

it's illuminated here's the map and then now

11:02

the next or yeah through everything's been out

11:04

he can only see where you can see

11:06

exactly so something's going on. I in a

11:08

place a very been. You would know

11:10

about it right. To keep that

11:12

in mind indeed, are moving on with

11:15

actually talk about the dungeons construction.

11:17

So consider purpose and functionality of the

11:19

dungeon. Yardy know what displaces the already

11:21

know the story and who who

11:23

lives here or doesn't live here. Now

11:26

let's talk about the actual functionality of

11:28

a dungeons into a system right?

11:30

could like? I'm If it's if it's

11:32

places like populated for a reason like

11:35

a temple will. temples should have

11:37

places of worship. They should have living

11:39

spaces. For the now or former custodians

11:41

on, they should have a place where

11:44

they hold offerings or give offerings and

11:46

and and and storage facilities and a

11:48

bunch of other things and him not

11:50

to mention whatever cool, magical, divine like.

11:53

Rooms are going on here. On top of

11:55

that I think a build for a better

11:57

done German the doesn't make sense and it

11:59

doesn't. The Like: This

12:01

artificially created. Get.

12:04

That place would yeah there are there

12:06

is one yeah the I ended my

12:08

horror. This area horrors right and often

12:10

often is the case of like this

12:12

place is built by a wizard or

12:14

a mad withered in for the intense

12:16

the protecting or trapping or whatever literally

12:18

be out of random assortment of death

12:20

trap exactly which those are very cool

12:22

and if that's what you're building cool

12:24

new role with that with a link

12:26

a lot of times I would even

12:28

say most of the time it's probably

12:30

not that is probably is something that

12:32

like states functionality. Should be considered. Yes,

12:35

your dungeons are going to have levels

12:37

of difficulty and. That's.

12:39

Gonna scale as you play. The over the Tomb

12:41

of Horrors is something you do towards the end

12:43

of your of your campaign where it sound like

12:45

world can be I mean like death death. As

12:47

for how the how much you want people to

12:49

die. Yeah exactly morzine to kill

12:51

people, high level adventures die and that him

12:53

for it is an affront. If I'm being

12:55

honest I'm pretty sure the five eating the

12:58

horses like super tame compared to like the

13:00

older athens of our agency or five used

13:02

a dumbed down all their know of them

13:04

down his thoughts that they. Promote.

13:08

The play through. A

13:11

tilt that the tilt the play to

13:13

be in the players favor he i

13:15

and access your arm and I think

13:18

I'm thinking about this functionality enlisting and

13:20

out you know castle, sit up courtyards,

13:22

battlements, halls, living quarters are done John

13:24

I'm towers at lists, eat out and

13:26

decide which ones you're in a include

13:29

I'm decide which ones are ninety doesn't

13:31

mind as the as your map he

13:33

understands and frame build the dungeon is

13:35

if we're in actual location and not

13:38

just the me through monsters. The coming

13:40

hours said that. Elitism Three: Me:

13:42

the room, the monsters which is also

13:44

cool. Consider the functionality considering the functionality

13:46

of the dungeon. Help them decide the

13:48

layout and number rooms a dungeon has

13:51

on the medicine. Consider whether you want

13:53

this to be a linear or non

13:55

linear experience. Rights to lay off. Okay,

13:57

are you to keep using the castle

13:59

for many are so right. So it's

14:01

Castle Arm meaning that like new. New.

14:04

Normally shouldn't have a linear experience necessarily because

14:06

like still come in through the the Porkulus

14:08

or whatever into the courtyard or and then

14:10

there's going to be more and more directions.

14:12

You can go multiple rounds you can go.

14:15

Yeah, so you're probably not gonna have a

14:17

leaner fancier unless you want one, In which

14:19

case you just have to take the steps.

14:21

Makes you there is one rise like oh

14:23

well. You actually can't go down the fall

14:25

cause it's being caved in and there's no

14:27

way through rights and we've no cut this

14:29

off. Right ago that tower crumble so you

14:31

can't go in there. You know he do

14:33

have that. A dive. So now you've

14:36

you. You took all the functionality into

14:38

account, You've built the space arm and

14:40

then you can have made it linear

14:42

by knocking out all this stuff right?

14:45

And it works in world Because this

14:47

is a dilapidated building that fellow centuries

14:49

ago and now like a roof. The

14:51

Barbie's or rental place or whatever you

14:54

know. So yeah, I think

14:56

you can they're going to be players are like

14:58

oh this was caved in While I'm a big

15:00

strong barbarian and there's four of us celeste as

15:02

dig it out need owners and the whole structure

15:05

has collapsed there's nothing there and start blogging for

15:07

going to start moving rocks and then make sure

15:09

that they get attacked to m in the meantime

15:11

that heard like a show them of the the

15:13

the fruits of their labor or or out the

15:16

i like okay well you mood much a rubble

15:18

and now there's just a. Crumbles. Crushed

15:20

empty space. It's night beyond. Good job

15:22

that to It's cold now here and

15:25

also a bill. Awesome. Had die from

15:27

others and dungeons in the dark? Yeah,

15:29

you can implement levels of exhaustion because

15:31

yes there that your levels of strength

15:33

imply how much hard labor you can

15:35

do and a day marino a good

15:38

ten strength can do eight hours of

15:40

labor right? So we're doing like way

15:42

crazy stuff. Beyond that I'm and yeah,

15:44

maybe punish them for doing the dungeon

15:46

wrong. Now I mean not so it's

15:49

guys like just. play out

15:51

yeah them away logical and result

15:53

yeah i'm when it comes to

15:55

the elemental evil temple slash laboratory

15:58

that i've been building lately You

16:01

know, it's pretty much

16:03

a linear experience because this place

16:05

is essentially like a gateway to

16:07

the real dungeon. And

16:09

it's designed to be traversable with

16:12

ease by the people who use this place.

16:15

And almost impossible

16:17

to traverse safely at all if

16:19

you're not. And so

16:21

on top of that, this temple is

16:23

also designed to be drawing the elemental

16:25

energy out of the surrounding area. So

16:28

I have rooms where that process

16:30

is happening. Got it. And

16:33

I've tied in that process to the

16:35

way you can traverse this area. Cool.

16:39

And we'll get into it. At the end of this episode, we'll kind

16:41

of go through my dungeons step by step. Yeah,

16:43

your dungeon is not necessarily an empty place

16:45

void of life, right? There's monsters here. But

16:47

maybe the inhabitants of the dungeon, like

16:50

we said, there's cults. There's functionality

16:53

here. You might find a

16:55

room full of like cots. You

16:58

know, like this is where people are sleeping. They're not here now

17:00

because it's 1 p.m. Right.

17:03

And it's time to go cause fucking mayhem in the

17:05

dungeon or go dig or whatever it is that they're

17:07

doing here. There could be a mining operation. Sure. It's

17:10

all about deciding, you know, in that first

17:12

kind of... In the preliminary

17:14

stages of what's happening here. Yeah, like you... Like

17:17

give this place life and make sure it makes sense. Like,

17:19

is there a janitor? Is it... Are

17:23

there just rats running rampant because there

17:25

is no janitor? Absolutely. That sort of

17:27

thing. Pest... Is there a

17:29

monster in here causing, you know, issues for

17:31

pests so that there is no pest, but

17:33

that now there's this monster like Otyug? You

17:35

know, something like that. Yeah, absolutely. Absolutely.

17:39

So designing the rooms. Once the

17:42

room... You're going through this

17:44

room by room, but once the room that you're working

17:46

on's function has been decided, it's time to design it.

17:50

If you were like me, you'd probably look

17:52

at other more talented dungeon builder maps online

17:54

for inspiration. Yeah. I do that

17:56

all the time. At This point, consider

17:58

the population that resides in the dungeon. Well

18:00

the type of challenge you're trying to

18:02

present arm is this a combat room

18:04

Mrs Smith be a room hit with

18:06

hidden treasure secrets is as a hazardous

18:08

room that's meant to be a setback

18:10

is this A and B C room

18:12

is it's just a room that maybe

18:14

doesn't the through have any those things

18:16

by A has a lore that can

18:18

be learned and make the experience richer.

18:20

Rights I got. Room should almost always

18:23

serve a purpose except for the very

18:25

odd ah off chance you actually wanted

18:27

to be empty rooms or for for

18:29

your players for. A loop but I should

18:31

probably be very rare. the want to do

18:33

that rarely? yeah I mean an an actual

18:35

empty room. It happens to happen here I

18:37

like a buzzing is a if you just

18:40

drip drip empty rooms in every once in

18:42

awhile of rove. Why does from empty and

18:44

have this are so here? I don't trust

18:46

this you know in a battle hymn lime

18:48

Yeah that can lead to somewhere interesting. you

18:51

know like our getting i the email improv

18:53

an empty room when you need more time

18:55

because they're going to make the boss isn't.

18:58

Yes sir, you could be that I get into

19:00

prefer Final Boss on the way that he's an

19:02

empty room for years. Without a doubt, they'll be

19:04

here for like an hour via. Email.

19:07

Each room in my opinion should have a

19:10

lead to the following aspect floor that can

19:12

be discovered, a mechanical challenge or combat. A.

19:15

Puzzle. And a reward.

19:17

Of. Ellis's empty room that

19:19

we were just discuss. Yes,

19:22

I'm so the Were designed.

19:24

This elemental temple is essentially

19:26

in order to get. The

19:29

the the party in order to reverse

19:31

into the deeper depth of the temple

19:33

are going to have to deliver for

19:36

elemental spheres to particular pedophile location right

19:38

arm. They don't know this but these

19:40

fears of are part of drawing out

19:42

the energy from the environment but then

19:45

they are usually transferred to the pedestal

19:47

by the cultists in order to safe

19:49

her back out of the spheres and

19:51

down below. Okay right so this is

19:54

a process that is happening and they're

19:56

going right now. They're charging and the

19:58

recharging. In a different room and eat it. Going to

20:00

present a different challenge and once they have all the

20:02

orb they'll be able to put them into the burn a

20:05

song. Which. Start. Sucking.

20:07

Out the energy and then open the way for

20:09

them to go. Down. Into Laborde

20:11

Yeah this is a great way

20:13

to have like four cardinal direction

20:15

dungeon and you mean add a

20:17

fifth of fit location less. I'm

20:19

going to go explore this. Pentagon.

20:22

Month. Of Areas And at the

20:24

final one, I have to gather all these

20:27

spheres from these four areas to unlock. This

20:29

last area in which is actually just another,

20:31

does. Yeah, and you could have walked he.

20:33

You could have walked here at any point

20:35

and looked at it and maybe force the

20:38

door. I guess we're probably not ellen. You

20:41

realize that the go somewhere else. he adds

20:43

a little and and again we will go

20:45

through the dungeon or step by step. But

20:47

yeah, essentially there's the entryway. There's gonna be

20:49

a big setback area for people who don't

20:52

belong here. and then there's a me the

20:54

main hub with the pedestal or I have.

20:56

then they're going to be always going to

20:58

four different rooms. Yeah Zelda games are great

21:00

for for.only games are great for didn't say

21:02

how to operate of time has some of

21:04

the best dungeon ever design. Answer by a

21:07

small key system I think is great. Like

21:09

you get into a room where you. Fire

21:11

and Enemy and than a test is revealed to

21:13

reward you. And maybe it's the compass, but it

21:15

makes your life easier in the dungeon. Yeah, although

21:17

I think that leans a little bit into the

21:19

Egg the mechanical video game he style which can

21:22

be cool yeah, I'm so. but just you know,

21:24

You use what works for your

21:27

style of campaign size. Yes, A

21:29

Key is a great way to.

21:32

Get your players to do the room the essential

21:34

and I used to do key cards as he

21:36

guides and superstar all the time. Yes, like we

21:38

have them are we have to fight the sky

21:41

and kill him and take his key. Carter grab

21:43

whatever it might be so that we can progress.

21:45

Other: Why did they allowed Rapide Zone? They are

21:47

this guy and clearance for but he goes down

21:49

and it makes sense. I mean like I'd make

21:51

a make that it makes sense in the lore.

21:54

it's a habit be this and it makes sense

21:56

for the game And it's fun for the game

21:58

indeed. Yes indeed. So.

22:01

That point, you know I have some

22:03

other tips. You know, using tools, I

22:05

want to really really encourage the use

22:07

of tools. So map makers and generators

22:10

are cool for folks who work better

22:12

with something to just fill. And I'm

22:14

one of those people I'd I'd catch

22:16

a straw map and be satisfied with

22:18

what I come up with a need

22:20

a be system, build it on marrying.

22:23

So whether it's like I'm looking at

22:25

just like other people's dungeon rooms and

22:27

just taking the sheath than than flinging

22:29

myself for whatever reason, my creativity. Works

22:31

better like that vs. Effects of It, Open

22:33

Canvas and where I can. I can do

22:35

almost nothing with Open Campus but gimme some

22:37

structure of the build on Ike I can

22:39

go crazy. Yeah you those random tables the

22:42

can I help you figure stuff out if

22:44

you if you feel like you're in that

22:46

situation, looking at the open campus and don't

22:48

know to do too many options, start. Randomized.

22:52

Randomize. Mm. I guess we an array

22:54

of one way to do it on random

22:56

table strapless puzzle lists. all great. I don't

22:59

necessarily role on them, I usually just like

23:01

them as lists now. Yeah, totally of ideas.

23:03

right arm. This would sit my finger much

23:06

on picking at my fiance by me to

23:08

books. I'm. One. Is a

23:10

A Is is the book full of just

23:12

hundreds of random tables for any kind of

23:14

thing even think of. Ah, and the other

23:16

is a room just or her room. a

23:18

book full of. Traps. Hazards.

23:21

Setbacks. I'm. Doctoral

23:23

dungeon rooms and of much other stuff and

23:25

I peruse it all the time on ah,

23:27

that's cool idea by. Being. The

23:30

person I am I'm almost never happy with. The

23:32

idea as it is presented them like this

23:35

is cool and concept but I'm gonna change

23:37

that eighty percent of it to be what

23:39

I was right? Yeah, that's good and that's

23:41

what identity for having those like just on

23:43

hand to peruse and to get inspiration from

23:46

like. Go for it. Do

23:48

it. Don't feel like you know you're

23:50

not using your own creative ideas like

23:52

being in Am supposed to be fun

23:54

and satisfying. Like don't make it work

23:56

that's miserable or too difficult. Yeah, into

23:58

do that. There is no reason. do

24:00

that. You can. Also, if you watch

24:02

last episode top End of the four

24:04

Hundred and seventy plus. Ah, As

24:07

traps that were published or you know, I'd

24:09

be more for a compendium on hand for

24:11

anything I'm doing no matter what game I'm

24:13

running rises every that's what I'm on the

24:16

side during the had absolutely no reason that

24:18

I shouldn't use one of these four hundred

24:20

and seventy seven pre written traps exact in

24:23

one of my dad's of yeah I just

24:25

adjust the numbers as you need the ideas

24:27

what matters. The mouse agreed. I'm thinking of

24:29

ideas. draw on rooms or encounter some games,

24:32

movies or life place for idea. Might gain

24:34

inspiration from the things like we the farmers,

24:36

older. I know. Oh really, that's my

24:38

touchstone for dungeons and fantasies. Guess

24:40

elbow? Absolutely. If you want to

24:42

build a dungeon were like the

24:45

mean Progress is through this webpage.

24:47

That. Like you guys can slice through and you

24:49

just need to get something big and heavy

24:51

to fall. or jumped down and stretch it

24:53

out and easy to get to that effect

24:55

low mass. make that that's the first. That's

24:57

the first dungeon in author of time right

24:59

there to jump from a high on high

25:01

in breakthrough that read were and then hopefully

25:04

fall into a nice cushy pull a water

25:06

to know. Of course you'll be able to

25:08

put enough to check that there is water

25:10

below the yeah Okay, yeah, exactly. Use the

25:12

game. Use the game. Yeah, so you know

25:14

I don't know. A Indiana Jones is another

25:16

good one. The drawn on. How you

25:18

did you did a whole series before Batman

25:20

the animated series yesterday. Now there's a lot

25:22

like what the auto much inspiration be had.

25:25

Don't be afraid to use a redress. it

25:27

changes ah million know don't use it like

25:29

you know before be but like definitely the

25:31

for inspiration use structure build upon it. that's

25:34

what are his anyways right? Yeah just building

25:36

and all the things that we learned or

25:38

experience and like making in our own it's

25:40

okay. what we're saying is it's okay to

25:43

to lift from say yeah like I'm a

25:45

know you've seen some at the people ask.

25:47

Us if it's okay if the lift an idea

25:49

we say on the show or an idea that

25:51

the they heard or saw and superstardom again due

25:53

to go for a gallon. Way prissy you our

25:56

but at like work. Did. the reason

25:58

the show existence for stuff like Exactly.

26:00

Please use this to run it.

26:02

I'm honored. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, I

26:04

don't own the idea of a

26:06

sideways crashed ship You

26:09

know what I mean? Right that that is

26:11

just a concept that exists and you can use it just like

26:13

I did Yeah, and we're done.

26:15

You will take fall damage in there

26:17

Yes, and gravity will be sideways because

26:19

of its sideways reason where the dungeon

26:21

is sideways It's

26:23

funny for f-bats. I used a

26:25

lot of the dungeons. I manifested

26:27

dungeons Based off of

26:29

like a few scenes in the show like well

26:31

It's a laboratory and then I get to like

26:34

plot out like what that laboratory might have looked like

26:36

if you dungeon crawled it, right? Exactly. That was cool.

26:38

That is super cool. That was a fun thing to

26:40

do like oh, well They kind of can you know

26:43

Batman that those episodes are fast. They

26:45

they got 22 minutes to show you Oh,

26:48

yeah, you know Phoenix labs and he just busts in

26:50

there and you know then

26:52

gets attacked by the cops probably Yeah,

26:55

of course. He's Batman Gotham PD's just

26:57

fucking worthless So this may not

26:59

seem like a super comprehensive step-by-step

27:03

Dungeon building process so far and I apologize if

27:05

that's what it seems like We're

27:07

gonna take a sure us when we come back. I am

27:09

going to go through this dungeon step-by-step I even have

27:11

like picture I took snapshots of the dungeon rooms Which I'll

27:14

try and include in the video portion of this episode

27:16

and we'll just kind of go over

27:19

Me going over this process for each room,

27:21

right? You can see it in action and

27:23

again, this is just how my brain works

27:25

and how I do things guys I hope

27:27

it helps you. Let's make sure okay Alien

27:35

are you all right? You

27:39

things got weird things that weird bite. I Don't

27:42

know been but I have stopped

27:44

referring to feet a

27:46

squares Yeah,

27:49

I should start yes, sorry, so

27:51

I think it's possible That

27:53

whatever the fuck that was we're finally

27:56

okay, okay? Remember

27:58

take calm down like we Is it

28:00

a fourth dimension, a fourth edition of reality?

28:02

It's like- But we've actually did it! I-I

28:06

hope so, this is very strange. I felt

28:08

weird, I felt old and new, and old

28:10

at the same time. I just- Everything

28:13

was so different. Anyway, look. Why

28:15

don't we take a reach at something

28:18

a little more familiar? I think I see like

28:20

a cave. Could be a dungeon over there. Why,

28:23

Bien? I- I

28:25

could go for a dungeon, Delvin. Yes, I could. Yes,

28:28

after that. Whatever that was,

28:30

I need something familiar. Where I feel like

28:32

I'm in control of myself again. Same, big

28:35

same, and maybe who knows it'll help us

28:37

get down the mountain. Could be a shortcut.

28:39

Yes, oh, wonderful. I love the positivity. Let's

28:41

go! Mmm, yeah. Um, it's

28:44

a good looking- it's a good looking cave

28:46

entrance, nice and damp. Look, it's even dark

28:48

inside. It's quite dark, yes. It smells terrible.

28:50

Oh, I'm elated. Classic stuff.

28:53

Fantastic. Let's go in. Oh,

28:55

it does. Alien, do you

28:57

see there's some sort of strange man

29:00

creature in here. Where?

29:03

I don't have dark vision here. They're standing in

29:05

front of that door. There's a, uh, back

29:07

there. I see him.

29:10

This is a rare creature indeed.

29:12

Oh, boy. A rare blend of

29:14

man and minotaur. Commonly

29:16

referred to as a man-itor. If

29:19

someone say, man-itor, it's me. Not

29:21

yet. Oh, you're speaking to it. I'm a man-itor.

29:25

Who are you? I am

29:27

Iliad the Green, wizard extraordinaire, holder

29:29

of the orb of Ether's net

29:31

and seeker of the pendant of

29:33

plenteous patrons. And

29:35

I'm Bien, the bewilderer. Where?

29:39

You trying to come in for dungeon, man, huh?

29:42

Yes, do you have a problem with that? I do. And

29:45

if you come through more dungeon- Bien, be

29:48

ready. You're gonna have to give

29:50

me a password. Words which

29:52

you use is what you must

29:54

pass. You

29:57

understand? Yes, I am familiar with

29:59

the concept. Alright, alright. Do we

30:01

have any clues to what the first word

30:04

could be? Just some rules, general rules I'll

30:06

have to explain to you. Okay, then please,

30:08

I am listening. What about you guys saying

30:10

that you're listening and he is ready? Uh,

30:13

yeah. Alright.

30:17

First things first, and this is me, and this is

30:20

my character's gnome. Each character's

30:22

a long- Hey, character's gnome. Our

30:24

next thing is called a container

30:26

capital letter. At least one. Okay,

30:29

I'm not sure how to do

30:32

that verbally, but- How about some- Okay,

30:34

I'm sorry, I'm sorry. You also need

30:36

a special character included. What? And numbers.

30:39

What? Numbers. Okay. You

30:42

said your wisdom is about what numbers is. Yes,

30:45

I am familiar with notice

30:47

numbers with numerology. You don't have

30:50

to speak disrespectfully. What knows what numbers

30:52

are. What special characters are you

30:54

referring to, and how can they be used

30:56

verbally in a passcode? I've got a long

30:59

list of special characters right here that you

31:01

can use for your passcode. Yeah. A little

31:03

line, a little dot underneath it. And

31:05

this one looks like a parry with a

31:08

little loop that you can use around the

31:10

other side. This one is a smash box.

31:12

A significant line. Yes. This is a sign

31:14

that means winning. This is

31:16

a sign for winning. This one

31:18

is going to use mathematics and their percentages.

31:20

This is a sign that I'm going to

31:22

go in. Okay, I see the

31:25

list. Thank you, Mr. Manator. This is

31:27

what I call M-percent. Not

31:29

sure how many times found of all people I've known that.

31:33

I did. I'm sure you did,

31:35

Mr. Wizard. Well, if you know everything all

31:37

with surpassable, right? I'll give you three chores.

31:39

You get them wrong, I'm kicking your ass,

31:42

and you're getting out of here. You

31:46

say he's going to kick our ass? You beard,

31:49

this Manator is quite confrontational. You're

31:51

quite, quite, you're quite

31:53

confrontational. No, I was going to get surpassable

31:55

to know. Fear

31:57

not fear. Ah, you alien, the great...

32:00

green have the answer for which we

32:02

seek. Remember,

32:05

long ago, in like the

32:07

second to third episode of

32:09

our most recent adventure, we

32:11

came across a passcode that needed

32:13

to be huge. And I looked

32:16

into the depths of my orb

32:18

of ether's net and I searched

32:21

the world wide web of the other

32:23

dimension and I found the answer for

32:25

which we seek. And it is here

32:27

today that I will reuse this passcode.

32:31

Get reckoned for 2069! That's

32:36

supposed to indicate an escalation mark at the

32:38

end. Oh alright, so that's a special character.

32:41

We have the numbers here for 2069. Get

32:45

reckoned. And then, where is your capital

32:47

letter? Well the first one of course. The T? Alright,

32:49

yes George. That wasn't what it was, Troy.

32:52

What? You got it? Yes Troy! Yes,

32:54

CBN I told you. Are you clearly supposed to

32:56

be here? Yes, absolutely we are. And

32:59

I shall. Wow, um, I can't believe it worked twice. Weird.

33:10

It's weird that it worked twice, yeah. Never

33:12

doubt, a green wizard. Well let's go in,

33:15

let's go in. Let's do this. I can't

33:17

wait to see what monsters we're gonna kill.

33:19

It's even damper and darker down there. As

33:21

it should be. Ah. Get that

33:24

manator's name. Ah, no.

33:26

No, I don't think we did. Oh well.

36:48

The podcast, I don't know if people have heard

36:50

about what's going on in the advertising

36:53

realm of podcasting, but

36:55

it's a fucking nightmare health gate.

36:57

A couple of years ago, it just

36:59

all went to shit and it never

37:01

really recovered. And so Patreon is one

37:03

of the best ways we can rely

37:05

on financial support to continue to do

37:07

the show. Feed my children. Feed Will's

37:20

is a cost to making the show. There is. It

37:23

helps a lot that we have

37:25

such a dedicated group of patrons. You

37:27

know, tell people about it. You can get

37:29

cool stuff if you go to patreon.com/the dungeon

37:31

cast, like early episodes, access to show notes.

37:33

We got actual play stuff. We have a

37:35

tier in space, which is all Illian and

37:37

Bieran content, which is just some really cool stuff

37:39

there right now, exclusive merch,

37:41

et cetera, et cetera, et

37:44

cetera. Just like the

37:46

Wonka man said is I

37:48

haven't seen Gene Wilder, wonka man, not the Timothy

37:51

Schallen. They want him. Think of that scene where

37:53

he says, et cetera. It's at

37:55

the end where he's yelling at Charlie Spoilers

37:57

for the old ass willing wonka. That movie.

38:00

Rock Years of all that movie rock

38:02

say it's a musical I just never

38:04

really is I conceptualize thou the way

38:06

I'm also big that musical yeah and

38:08

Gene Wilder in general only looking out

38:10

a catalogue of stuff my dad liked

38:12

growing up as a nice my dad

38:14

into musicals a has a city is

38:16

really came off away and I never

38:18

would either. yeah I realize I'm a

38:20

Monday as listen to opera randomly of

38:22

like oh man went up by the

38:24

only reason was that likes music lists.

38:26

While I agree to dead musicals rock

38:28

no good the pretty. Good or Ill

38:31

a summer doesn't yet. We should talk

38:33

about the dungeon. The dungeon that is

38:35

my heart. Ah his his full of

38:37

poison drops. Oh yeah to scary. didn't

38:39

gassed. I love those traps where you

38:42

are fiddling with something that's supposed to

38:44

be. Adore him and it's get blasted

38:46

with fucking poison and it goes. Your

38:48

doblin Npc that was running around with

38:50

the A nip. Classic, classic stuff, classics.

38:53

Okay, so let's go through my my

38:56

Elemental Evil dungeon that have been that

38:58

I've done built or Lisa build the

39:00

first half of for my personal the

39:02

indie games and ah like I've already

39:04

kind of established in the first halves

39:07

of third What Displaces arms the standing

39:09

outside this dungeon the party will be

39:11

probably next time with her arm they

39:13

will find themselves in this desperate desolate

39:15

wasteland area on this island which is

39:17

other was quite. Rich in life

39:20

and tropical and from Boston Ma that

39:22

other stuff and first sign the sums

39:24

wrong here is not a sign is

39:26

that they'll be standing before a ziggurat

39:29

a very for boating zero made of

39:31

Blackstone with this weird symbol at least

39:33

in all over it. I'm though be

39:35

some like or corner rules to see

39:37

what you know what the symbol means

39:40

that are that are a dungeon more

39:42

dungeon more have a story or that

39:44

henri there's one points exact alley so

39:46

then there will be or an area

39:48

where sacrifices. Can be left outside you

39:51

know and they'll probably be luckier than

39:53

go. Very Yeah. Very Dagger. the he'll

39:55

be like some very like dark. With

39:59

word I'm looking for I'm implications

40:01

more laid out there of and

40:03

then they can go down into

40:06

the dungeon. So the first room

40:08

is the the the major. Ah,

40:11

I'm ward area to keep outsiders outright.

40:13

causes need to come through here to

40:15

collect sacrifices and they need to get

40:17

back in easily. but they don't want

40:19

anyone else to do this easily right?

40:21

So I peruse through some book than

40:23

found a really cool ah pre designed

40:25

room called the Switchbacks and I took

40:27

that that room design as food chains

40:30

everything else about it but it took

40:32

that room design and is essentially a

40:34

long hallway. The switches back and forth

40:36

our here at the back of my

40:38

and they are implies. Like the

40:40

name implies, Switchbacks is a hiking term.

40:42

it is a hiking term Israel Arm

40:44

and essentially ah this room is full

40:47

a secret doors and the causes of

40:49

course know where their stores aren't if

40:51

he nor the art is delicious. A

40:53

straight shot from the entrance. To.

40:56

Through this room into the real entrance,

40:58

right? Okay, but the players, it'll be

41:00

really high Dc. I don't expect them

41:02

to find it. or at least not

41:04

right away. Okay, and so they'll have

41:07

to be going through the switchbacks, right?

41:09

Or these dark, unlit switchbacks. Ah, in

41:11

which, by the way up the the

41:13

passageway, he's five foot in May, so

41:15

it's not. Ah, a very wide like

41:17

character can be sold his shoulder. they're

41:19

gonna have to be in single file.

41:22

I'm Am going through the switchbacks. I'm

41:24

and. Occupying in keeping the

41:26

Switch Rex quite clean is a July

41:28

Steven. Wait, yeah yeah yeah. Goes up

41:30

and down the Switchbacks hill. Absorbent anything

41:33

that comes across as back and forth

41:35

pounds. Aruba dungeon roomba at work and

41:37

didn't I want to say that this

41:40

table with the exception of my fiance

41:42

who the player is full of absolute

41:44

newbies who have never played before. So

41:46

if this dungeon things like a hit

41:49

the lot of tropes that is very

41:51

much on purpose I want them to

41:53

experience and classic Dmd. Armed

41:55

The want to get them hooked. Now I

41:57

mean that's great for a general episode. Builder. You

42:00

know, yeah, three pm to get on the

42:02

hang onto? Yeah, so. In

42:04

this, we've kind of gone through my

42:07

process, which is. We've

42:09

we've established the story of the dungeon

42:11

and we already know what the dungeon

42:13

is and we decide how we're going

42:15

to present his arm. I have a

42:17

little map here for this particular room

42:19

and ah I'm and. Not a

42:21

now. I'm constructing the rooms and I'm thinking

42:23

about functionality and the you know a purpose

42:26

And I'm and I'm thinking about the type

42:28

of challenge I'm trying to present the players

42:30

on the out a metal level. nice that's

42:32

the first from than sector him doesn't have

42:34

him out because the second room is essentially

42:36

the. The.

42:40

The Hub right? it's it's This is

42:42

the area where once all the fears

42:44

are collected, there's gonna be a pedestal.

42:47

Probably. Like a mural I haven't really

42:49

decided on the details yet and of placing

42:51

the spheres in the pedestal will cause the

42:54

walls to move and revealed the stairs Who

42:56

went down to a deeper dungeon right? Very

42:58

cool but impossible to get through. I'm

43:01

outside of having like a ton of

43:03

dynamite which doesn't exist in this world.

43:05

com. To. Blow up the wall.

43:07

I am puzzled. Get through without a coin.

43:09

the for other adjacent rooms, which there will

43:12

be doors going into only a mess with

43:14

three of them to the one of them.

43:16

Ah, doesn't need a map, but I you

43:18

probably guessed that the rooms outside of the

43:20

central pedestal area are going to very much

43:22

follow the seems of the four elements. Yeah,

43:24

so we're going to have an orb, a

43:27

fire room at or above water room, or

43:29

of earth or above air. I mean, that's

43:31

going to inform all the dangers. Exactly right.

43:33

That informs. Or the danger. Say that's exactly

43:35

right. So I'm. Both

43:37

are with the Orb of Fire room

43:39

which essentially is going to be a

43:41

door opens up and before the party's

43:43

going to be a fire. How

43:46

long I'll have this

43:48

Blackstone arm? Which.

43:50

Is like a catwalk above. A.

43:52

pair of boiling magma go right

43:54

liquid hot man at the center

43:57

of the room the catwalk of

43:59

stone leads to An octagon of

44:01

stone and at its center on

44:03

a pedestal will be this orange burning,

44:05

you know, or right They won't

44:07

know what the fuck it is with like

44:09

a cool dark upside down pyramid design like

44:12

above it kind of like isn't

44:14

in a breath of the wild like You

44:18

know when you the places where you put the

44:20

tablet how it has like an obelisk thing coming

44:22

down. Yeah Yeah, it's gonna be like that drop.

44:24

Yeah, exactly but more pointy Okay above the sphere

44:26

right and and then there will be like a

44:28

couple like Platforms

44:31

out on the lava it's

44:34

like a 10-foot drop to the lava and You

44:37

know They just play a part in in when

44:39

it comes to movement because there will probably be

44:41

a combat in this room basically,

44:43

there will be a Riddle

44:47

that will need to be solved

44:49

based off like button inputs. Okay. Um,

44:51

and if they fail It's

44:53

going to cause the room to become locked

44:55

and the lava to rise and

44:57

then fire snakes are gonna jump out Fire

45:00

weirds. Yes, and if they Do

45:03

get it, right? They'll be able to take the sphere if they

45:05

kill the snakes. They'll be able to take the sphere And

45:08

that that's that room. It's it's a it's

45:10

a here. We have a puzzle. We have

45:13

hazardous lava And

45:15

if you guys fuck up, here's a fight Yeah,

45:18

so you're not making the lava rise

45:20

up and kill them Right, like they

45:22

can't they can't die in this room

45:24

unless the game says they die Yeah, no, the lava

45:27

is just gonna rise up to the platform level. So

45:29

the snakes can just kind of flop out. Gotcha Yeah,

45:32

um, and again when I think about

45:34

like functionality for the cultists, right? It's like they already

45:36

know the answer they just come in and go boop

45:38

boop boop grab the sphere, you know humdrum, right? Yeah,

45:40

so there we go. That's one room Next

45:43

we have the over water room. So

45:46

this room is This

45:51

one took me a while so basically they're

45:53

gonna walk into this large kind of like

45:55

sewage area not sewage But it's gonna look

45:57

like a pipe It's gonna be a

45:59

pipe this large room with a bunch of

46:02

pipes in the wall, right? And

46:04

on the, we'll say, southern slope

46:07

of the room, there's a large

46:09

pool of water that like fills

46:11

up half of the room, right?

46:14

And along the wall are huge

46:16

shards of ice jutting out of the wall. And

46:19

embedded in the ice is gonna be another orb of,

46:21

another orb glowing. Yeah. We got a orb of water

46:23

here, right? But it's in the ice. The only way

46:25

to get it out is to melt the ice, and

46:27

the ice is, there's just a massive amount of it.

46:29

So like burning all their spell slots, so

46:32

it will help. It's not gonna get the job done.

46:35

The only way to get the job done is to fill

46:37

the room with water, which unfortunately, to do that, there are

46:39

some levers on the northern side

46:41

by these pipes, right? And there

46:43

is going to be a lever

46:46

for drainage,

46:48

for draining the room, and then there's gonna be

46:51

a lever for filling the room. And

46:53

neither lever, those levers can be pulled until you

46:55

pull the lever that seals the room. We have

46:57

to be sealed in the room to do it.

46:59

Got it. So essentially this water is

47:02

gonna rise, and as it's rising, it's going

47:04

to, you know, melt the ice. And

47:07

unfortunately though, because of the slope

47:09

and the the currents pumping

47:11

out of these pipes, it's gonna cause it to

47:14

be sloshing in like massive waves. And so

47:16

they're gonna essentially have to endure being tossed

47:18

about, and the danger of being tossed into

47:20

the the spikes, the

47:22

ice spikes. Okay. And then, okay,

47:25

rooms full, we can't breathe, get

47:28

the orb, and let's pull the lever again,

47:30

right? So it's gonna be survive the hazard

47:32

room. Cool. Okay. Yeah. So my

47:35

idea here with the cultists is like, they're

47:37

gonna, they're elemental cultists, right? So like, they

47:40

could probably just like shape the ice and grab

47:42

the orb out. And they're not really worried about the rest

47:44

of it. Oh, okay. They just do magic? Yeah. Like this,

47:46

these levers are more like due in

47:48

case of emergency. Like this is our backup from

47:50

when we're out of slots. Got

47:52

it. Okay. All right. So

47:54

now we can move on to the

47:57

Earth room. I was reading through another

47:59

book I had that was like talking

48:01

about traps and hazards, right? And this

48:03

really cool idea of like a room

48:05

itself being a living organism. And

48:08

so I took that idea

48:10

and I rolled with it and

48:12

just kind of reflavored it into earth

48:15

elemental flavor, right? So they can

48:17

walk into this room. The orb

48:19

is going to be on

48:22

a pedestal surrounded by like the

48:24

grimiest, nastiest, slickest mud you

48:27

can think of, right? And

48:29

there's going to be four

48:31

obsidian pillars that are

48:33

also surrounded by like the nastiest, slickest

48:35

mud. Pulling

48:37

the orb off the pedestal is going

48:40

to cause the room which

48:42

is itself like a sealed earth elemental to

48:44

come to life, right? Okay. And

48:46

the earth elemental is like sealed here

48:48

through the power of the pillars. And

48:52

essentially it's going to be able to attack any

48:54

and all people

48:56

in the room at any given time. It's

49:00

going to take layer actions. Okay. Like

49:02

on DC 20 or whatever, or

49:05

initiative roll 20. And the

49:08

room's going to have like 250 hit points but have

49:10

like an EC of eight or whatever. And like they can

49:12

slash at the room to try and take it down. But

49:14

if they take down the pillars, it'll come

49:16

down faster. But the problem is the mud

49:18

around the pedestals or around the

49:20

pedestal and around the pillars is

49:22

difficult terrain and forever square of movement you

49:24

have to make a dexterity save not to

49:26

slip and fall prone. Okay. So

49:29

yeah, it's like a combat but it's also like a

49:31

puzzle at the same time. That's what I

49:33

was going with here. And of course the cultists would

49:35

have a spell to keep the elemental calm or whatever

49:38

and just grab the orb, right? Gotcha, okay. So

49:41

that's the earth room. The

49:43

air room I decided was going

49:45

to be completely non-combat related. And

49:48

essentially it's inspired by some rooms

49:50

I remember vaguely from like Twilight Princess

49:53

and Wind Waker Zelda. Where

49:55

they're going to walk into a room

49:57

that is very dark and... empty

50:01

with the exception of like immediately after walking

50:03

into the room, there's a drop off of

50:05

like 40 feet, right? Okay. And

50:07

you can, if with dark vision and stuff, you can

50:09

see down, it's just an empty room with this drop

50:11

down, right? And it also has

50:13

a really high ceiling. And then there

50:15

are two pillars with something that

50:17

they can't quite make out on top of each

50:20

one. And then across

50:22

the room embedded into the wall is

50:24

an alcove with the air orb on

50:26

a pedestal. And

50:29

the whole room is going to be like whistling

50:31

and howling with wind, right? And

50:33

the idea here is that the winds here

50:35

are incredibly strong and very unpredictable. And as

50:38

long as you're not wearing heavy armor, you

50:40

can jump out into it and

50:42

it will start moving you about, right?

50:45

Okay. If you can, if you're

50:47

a character with flight, you have advantage on the checks

50:49

to try and like control your movement. But

50:52

otherwise you're trying to control your movement to get

50:54

to the orb, except for

50:56

I did forget to mention the orb will

50:59

be locked behind like a jet,

51:01

like a portcullis. There we

51:03

go. Okay, cool.

51:05

And the portcullis will be like super, super

51:08

heavy. So no one's lifting it, right? And

51:10

on the two pillars will be devices that

51:12

will require strength tech checks to maintain engaged

51:15

when both are engaged, the portcullis will lift.

51:17

So the idea here is one

51:20

character needs to get on one

51:22

pillar, another needs to get on the other and they

51:24

need to engage the devices. And then a third character

51:26

needs to get up there and grab the orb. And

51:29

then they all need to find their way back.

51:31

And of course, failing stays will lead to fall

51:33

damages and stuff. So it's just a hazardous room.

51:35

People getting trapped in behind the portcullis momentarily. Exactly.

51:38

And rethink their pulls. And the cultists, I

51:40

picture the cultists all wearing like these goggles

51:42

and these particular goggles like can literally see

51:44

the wind. So like they can just guide

51:47

themselves through the wind as they need to

51:49

in this particular room. Okay, sweet.

51:52

So yeah, that's essentially it. Once those orbs

51:54

are gathered at the pedestal, the mural will

51:56

open, the wall will open. They'll be able

51:58

to descend down. Then there's going to

52:00

be a room that has like a

52:03

magic crystal at its center and another pyramid

52:05

type structure that seems to be drawing energy

52:07

out of it. And orbs

52:10

can be placed here as well once this

52:12

door is open. With

52:15

sufficient checks they will discover that this crystal is

52:17

serving as the dragon ward and if they destroy

52:19

it the dragon ward will no

52:21

longer be warding. Which

52:24

in this case is very pertinent because they've made

52:26

a deal with the dragon to try and clear

52:28

this place because the dragon wants to get in

52:30

here and stop people. And

52:32

then after that we'll get into the laboratory which I have not

52:34

built yet. Well I like

52:37

this dungeon a lot. It's

52:40

got a lot of good flavor for

52:43

what you are trying to get out of

52:45

it. It's got four good rooms with puzzles

52:47

and danger. Players are

52:49

going to have to rest in between if they fuck up real bad. And

52:53

also I wanted to give them an

52:55

opportunity to take a long rest

52:57

without having to reasonably worry about getting

53:00

caught. They won't know this but if they take a long

53:02

rest I've designed it in such a way where the cultists

53:04

come here every 24 hours. So

53:06

basically what I'm going to do is I will allow them

53:08

one long rest but if they take another the cultists are

53:10

going to show up. Right okay. Yeah

53:13

that's cool. I had a dungeon area where

53:15

you would get attacked by a repopulating

53:18

dungeon if you spent too long in it.

53:21

Right. With rests. So

53:23

taking places in your dungeon for players

53:26

to rest is important. Depending

53:29

on the style of war of attrition you are

53:31

trying to run against them. So

53:33

maybe you don't want places to rest. Maybe

53:36

you want risky places to rest or maybe it's okay for

53:38

them to short rest through this place. Yeah

53:40

exactly. Too many abusing the long rest

53:42

is something that is problematic.

53:45

There should be consequences for long

53:48

resting. Absolutely. And that's

53:50

all I got. That's how I build a dungeon. That's

53:52

the dungeon I built using the same steps that I

53:54

said before the short rest. I hope it was helpful

53:56

guys. Let me know if it was. I

53:58

guess let me know if it was and I'm sure you'll be fine. you will. And

54:01

with that being said I think we can get ready for a long rest?

54:04

Yeah. Hey

54:13

everybody, welcome to the long rest. We're

54:16

gonna design some slippers now. Are

54:18

we? Yep. What function do they

54:20

serve? Keeping the toes from

54:23

freezing. But what's their story?

54:26

They have, you

54:28

know, they need to be washed probably. What type

54:30

of challenge do they present the player? If

54:33

you try to walk backwards in them they

54:35

slip off really easily so you should really

54:37

kind of cater your movements to keeping them

54:39

on which is like you know scuttling 180

54:43

degrees to do turns instead of just walking

54:45

backwards. You know what I mean? That's

54:47

a well designed slipper. I think it's

54:49

a poorly designed slipper. I think Crocs

54:51

are kind of well designed but are

54:53

not good for warmth and stuff. No

54:55

definitely not. There's like moccasin style that

54:57

go around your whole foot but these

55:00

slippers are not, they don't have a

55:02

back. Are Crocs the ugliest footwear? It

55:04

depends on what generation of folks you ask.

55:06

I find them hideous. They're bad.

55:08

I think they're objectively bad-looking. Okay

55:11

that's how I feel too. Yeah.

55:14

The ugliest though, I don't know.

55:17

They're definitely the ugliest thing lots of people wear. I

55:20

don't know if I've ever caught someone in the wild wearing

55:22

them but then again I'm not looking at people's feet that

55:24

often so I don't know. Some people do look at people's

55:26

feet very much. Some people make

55:28

a hobby out of it. Anyway if

55:32

you want to support us go

55:34

to patreon.com/the dungeon cast and give us

55:37

money. Thank you. No

55:39

we really appreciate everybody that is

55:41

on patreon and helping support the

55:43

show. We kind of mentioned how

55:46

the volatility of podcasting, advertising has

55:48

gone over the last few years

55:51

and you know if you're paying half attention you know

55:53

the economy do crazy stuff all the time so we

55:56

really appreciate the networks we're a part of and we

55:58

try to monetize our show on YouTube. But the best

56:00

and most reliable thing that we have in our

56:02

arsenal in terms of helping keep

56:05

the lights on here is you guys that go

56:08

to Patreon and help make it all

56:10

possible. So we want to say a big thank you. It's

56:13

been a lot of fun watching you guys

56:15

vote on different episode topics and all that

56:17

good stuff. And to

56:20

see these two, last two episodes of these

56:22

topics come to fruition has

56:24

been rewarding. It's like finally it happened.

56:26

We've talked about fourth edition. It's been

56:28

explained. Yeah, we point people towards

56:31

that episode now. Yeah, now a dungeon has

56:33

been built and that's cool. Like

56:35

I said, we've got other dungeon-esque episodes,

56:37

but it's always good to do sort

56:39

of a dungeon masters from the floor

56:41

up with unique

56:43

perspectives. So thank you guys so much

56:46

for your participation. If you're interested, please

56:48

go. We got links below

56:50

57:37

Stevens. You

57:46

an honor to have you on board. Please go

57:50

check out your bonus content. We split the

57:52

shout outs between these two episodes because we did them back to

57:54

back. So

57:57

From my list, I read half last

58:00

episode. the hapless episodes make us so

58:02

much. Once again we're gonna go ahead

58:04

58:07

1:02:16

getting in there too and the mix is

1:02:18

1:02:20

that's the number one social media platform for

1:02:22

the dungeon cast is check out the discord

1:02:24

Yeah, it's more like a greater tabletop RPG

1:02:27
