Hello, wonderful listeners! It is Pascale Gibon here. I am so thrilled to be your host for episode 347 of The Everyday Life Balance Show. I hope you are ready to dive deep into a crucial topic today - discipline. Yes, the sometimes difficult-to-achieve but oh-so-powerful quality that makes the distinction between those who achieve lasting success and those who stay stuck spinning their wheels.

 

You see, when we examine the lives of truly successful people across all walks of life, one striking commonality emerges - an incredible level of self-discipline. These high performers refuse to let distractions, momentary discomforts, or fleeting moods derail them from their chosen path. Instead, they cultivate laser-like focus, develop habits of persistence, and hold themselves to exceptionally high standards. 

You might have a worthy ideal or goal. So today, I will share six powerful ways to strengthen your self-discipline muscle. Think of it as a workout plan for your willpower! How exciting!

 

Let us start:

Pillar #1: Develop Intense Focus 

In this chaotic and distracting world we live in, it is all too easy to have our attention shattered into a million little pieces. But the road to results requires laser-like concentration on what matters most. Try time-boxing techniques like giving yourself a 5-hour distraction-free window to get things done or commit to a daily "Power Hour" where you pour all your energy into your highest leverage activity. Keep the big picture in mind always.

 

Pillar #2. Become a Creature of Supportive Habits

Repetition paves the path to mastery. Just look at legends like Picasso, Michael Jordan, or Janet Jackson, whose stunning artistry flows effortlessly thanks to thousands of hours of diligent practice. Read that book again that is most impactful to you. One of my mentors, Bob Proctor, read the book by Napoleon Hill, “Think And Grow Rich” every day for over 50 years. Listen to that course repeatedly. Etch the habits of excellence into your neurology through persistence and consistency.  

 

Pillar #3. Be Unstoppable  

There is no such thing as 'discipline' without consistency. Prolific achievers like author John Maxwell, who wrote over 100 books, do not park their talents. They just keep going and experience lasting success. Let go of the stop-and-start approach that leaves you with numerous unfinished projects. Keep going and do not give up until you have crossed the finish line.

 

Pillar #4. Organise Like a Boss

Let us face it - chaos breeds more chaos. If you want to be more disciplined, start by getting organised. Map out your year in advance.  You get things done when you anticipate the activities you wish to carry out daily. Keep a physical diary that lays out your daily priorities. As the saying goes, "What gets scheduled gets done." So anticipate and schedule your ideal reality in advance.

 

Pillar #5. Adopt Self-Commandment  

True self-discipline requires issuing clear and unwavering directives to oneself and then following through, no matter what. It is about maintaining a high level of self-awareness to notice when you drift off-course and immediately course-correct when necessary. When you commit to a goal, you do it without excuses, ifs, ands, or buts.

 

Pillar #6. Cultivate A Growth Mindset 

More than anything, lasting self-discipline flows from an unstoppable growth mindset. It is the determination to expand and evolve, to embrace failures as data points, to persevere through adversity, and to keep climbing higher. Nurture this mindset by committing to daily personal development through reading, exercise, meditation, and more.   

To get started, follow the 20-20-20 rule. Every day, discipline yourself to spend:

20 minutes of reading or listening to a personal development book, podcast or course

20 minutes exercising

20 minutes of practising mindfulness through meditation and prayer
