6:01

where her and Clarence were staying with her

6:03

young son and she was fatally

6:05

hit by a car from behind. The

6:08

same day, Clarence had called

6:10

and told Karen Parsley, Tanya's friend

6:13

and coworker, what had happened and

6:15

that no visitors were allowed to

6:17

come see her at the hospital.

6:20

Tanya's friend ignored that and she went to

6:23

visit her anyways. Karen

6:25

was an exotic dancer. That's how she

6:27

knew Tanya. She had met

6:29

Tanya at a club called Passions back

6:31

in 1989 and they had worked there

6:33

in Tulsa,

6:36

Oklahoma. They were good friends. She's

6:39

going to see her. She doesn't care if

6:41

she's allowed to see her. This is

6:43

her best friend. Well, and beyond

6:45

that, she's met Clarence who

6:47

is supposedly Tanya's much older

6:49

husband, right? So she has

6:51

this background. She knows that

6:53

Clarence is abusive and so

6:56

she feels like maybe she's just being

6:58

told there are no visitors because he

7:00

doesn't want her there. That's

7:02

why she's going because she's going to

7:04

be there for her friend and she knows

7:06

Clarence is probably the reason that her friend

7:08

is in the hospital anyway. She

7:11

met Tanya when Tanya was 18, 19

7:14

years old and Clarence

7:16

appears to be late

7:18

thirties. She might not

7:20

know his exact age, but she knows

7:22

that this is a huge age gap

7:24

and Clarence acts very possessive of her.

7:27

So Karen gets to the hospital and

7:30

she said it's not long before nurses

7:32

show up and start telling her that

7:34

they believe this is no accident. And

7:37

Karen had noticed scratches on Tanya's chest that

7:39

looked more like she had been in

7:41

a fight. So she immediately,

7:43

of course, believes the nurses because

7:46

she's already suspicious of Clarence.

7:48

And part of this is because she

7:51

worked at that club with Tanya and

7:53

she'd seen bruises on her before, which

7:55

she said were just terrible. And

7:58

there was one time where Karen suggested that family

10:00

of Tanya's passing. And

10:03

when they found contact information for her mother,

10:05

they called and told her, you know, we're

10:07

sorry to tell you, but your daughter died.

10:10

And the woman stated that her daughter

10:12

had died as a baby almost 20

10:14

years ago. So right away, they know

10:16

Tanya Hughes, that must not be her

10:18

real name. Yeah, there's

10:21

something fishy going on here. On

10:24

May 1st, 1990, Merle and Ernest Bean

10:26

took Michael into their home. And they

10:28

said that Michael appeared to have behavioral

10:30

issues and he drank Pepsi from a

10:32

bottle, which is odd for a little

10:34

guy. Initially, Michael would have tantrums,

10:36

but after a while, the Beans said they

10:39

were able to get Michael off the bottle

10:41

and away from drinking Pepsi. This was a

10:43

real addiction. And after a week or so,

10:45

they started to see a change in him.

10:48

And he seemed to settle into his new

10:50

home. Clarence had visitation rights,

10:52

but when it was time for a

10:54

visitation, Michael ran and hid under the

10:56

furniture. Talk about a red flag. Apparently,

10:59

Michael didn't like seeing Clarence and

11:01

told the Beans that Clarence was

11:03

a mean man. But

11:05

during this time that Michael was with

11:08

the Beans, Clarence wasn't just saying, oh,

11:10

I'll visit this day or I'll visit

11:12

that day. No, he was trying to

11:14

get custody of Michael. And

11:17

during a statement in court, Clarence claimed

11:19

Michael was told he was a bad

11:21

man and was locked in a room

11:23

with no toys. He further claimed Michael

11:25

was taken from Clarence without evidence of

11:27

abuse, but because of a wet diaper

11:29

and what others perceived as a lack

11:31

of affection. So he's blaming all this

11:34

behavioral stuff on the Beans. And

11:36

he blamed his lack of caring for

11:38

Michael on Tanya's death and said he

11:40

was just too emotional at the time.

11:42

But of course, now he's saying, I'm

11:44

good. I'm ready to take custody of

11:46

Michael and care for him. But the

11:48

court does something that's out of left

11:50

field for Mr. Clarence. And that's, they

11:52

ordered a paternity test because all

11:54

this time, Clarence is claiming, oh, I'm

11:57

his father. I need to have my

11:59

son back. He's

14:00

just trying to get his rights back.

14:02

So she's told basically, just forget about

14:04

it. It's no big deal. But this

14:06

is someone's internal sense, right? You know,

14:08

in the movies, it's Spidey's sense. But

14:11

for this woman, she feels like something's

14:13

wrong here. Dr. Justin Marchegiani Sometimes,

14:15

law enforcement and DHS gets it right in this

14:18

case, and sometimes they might get it a little

14:20

wrong in this case. And this is one of

14:22

the times I feel like they get it wrong.

14:25

What happens next? Dr. Justin Marchegiani

14:27

September 12, 1994, police responded to

14:30

a call and they found Indian

14:32

Meridian Elementary's principal, James Davis, handcuffed

14:34

to a tree with duct tape

14:37

around his face and mouth in

14:39

the woods around the Choctaw area.

14:42

It's unknown how long he had

14:44

been there before a passerby found

14:46

him. And when Davis talked to

14:48

investigators, he said Clarence Hughes walked

14:50

into the school and asked to

14:53

speak with the principal. And Clarence then

14:55

told Davis he was there to get his son,

14:57

Michael, and then showed him a gun. Clarence

15:00

told Davis he was willing to die to get

15:02

Michael and threatened to kill him if he didn't

15:04

help. This is a tough spot for

15:06

a principal to be in because he's in

15:08

charge of an entire school of children. And

15:10

here he is being shown a gun and

15:13

being told, this guy is desperate and he

15:15

wants his son and if he doesn't give

15:17

him his son, bad things are gonna happen.

15:20

So this principal, he takes Clarence

15:22

to Michael's classroom where Clarence gets

15:24

Michael and Davis and takes them

15:26

from the school. He

15:28

then forces Davis to drive his pickup out

15:31

onto a dirt road and then orders

15:33

him out of the truck and

15:35

into the woods where he handcuffed him to

15:37

a tree where he's later found. Clarence

15:39

took off with Michael in the

15:42

principal's Blue Ford pickup truck. And

15:44

of course, once police cleared the

15:46

scene, they notified the FBI. And

15:49

Aaron, this is just something that occurred

15:51

to me. Why didn't anyone at the

15:53

school call law enforcement? Did they not

15:55

understand what was going on

15:57

here? Because it seems that nobody... is

16:00

looking into this until this principle is

16:02

found tied and duct taped to a

16:04

tree many hours later. I'm

16:06

just thinking, did no one notice Clarence

16:09

coming in and removing this child and

16:11

the principle from the school? I kind

16:13

of have the feeling that what happened

16:15

here was the reason why Clarence is

16:17

keeping the gun in his pocket is

16:19

so that he can pull it out

16:21

if need be, but he doesn't want

16:23

to alert anyone else. So when

16:25

people look, they just see the principle going with this

16:28

man to get his son and they probably think there

16:30

must be something going on. Maybe there was a death

16:32

in the family or they suddenly have to go out

16:34

of town, but I think most people they just go

16:36

on with their day. Take

18:43

FBI Special Agent Joe Fitzpatrick was assigned

18:46

to this case, and he worked with

18:48

local Choctaw Assistant Chief of Police Billy

18:50

Carter. The FBI quickly put out an

18:52

APB with Michael's information as well as

18:55

a picture. They described Michael as a

18:57

6-year-old white male with brown hair and

18:59

brown eyes. He had a scar on

19:01

his forehead and two crooked bottom teeth.

19:04

Now, when Clarence kidnapped Michael from the school,

19:06

the little boy was wearing a blue t-shirt

19:09

with red sleeves and red and blue shorts

19:11

with black high-top sneakers. So

19:13

this is excellent work, I think. They

19:15

already have a picture of him, a

19:17

description, his age, his name, and

19:20

so all law enforcement and the

19:22

public essentially is finding out that

19:24

there's this boy that's been kidnapped.

19:27

But as we know, the first 48 hours are critical here. And

19:31

Fitzpatrick was told by the FBI

19:33

Behavioral Science Unit that Clarence would

19:35

most likely tire of Michael within

19:37

a week and dispose of him,

19:40

kill him. Police believed

19:42

Clarence was still driving that Ford pickup

19:44

that he stole from the principal. And

19:47

it's weird because you'd think, why would this man

19:50

go through so much trouble to

19:52

get what he claims is his son

19:54

back, but then tire of him and

19:56

dispose of him later? Well, I actually

19:59

do a... agree with the

20:01

FBI behavioral science person here once

20:04

you get to know Clarence a little better. This

20:06

child is in extreme danger. Another

20:09

thing I think people have to understand

20:11

here is that when someone is this

20:14

abusive and this controlling, it's

20:16

not about, oh, I want this little

20:18

boy back. No, that's his property. He

20:21

will not allow anyone to tell him what he can

20:23

and cannot do. It's no

20:25

surprise that Clarence will try to

20:27

collect on that life insurance policy

20:29

he took out on Tanya. During

20:32

the process, he has to hand

20:34

over a lot of personal information.

20:36

He gives a social security number

20:39

that is linked to another name,

20:41

someone named Franklin Floyd, right?

20:44

Yeah, the fellow workers at

20:46

that club where Tanya and

20:48

Karen worked, they knew something

20:50

was up. And it turns

20:52

out that this man, his name

20:55

is not Clarence Hughes. It was actually

20:57

Franklin Delano Floyd. And he

20:59

was actually born June 17, 1943

21:02

in Barnesville, Georgia. He had a

21:04

very rough childhood. I don't really want to

21:06

get into it, but rest assured, he suffered

21:08

a lot of abuse. But

21:10

he ended up running away when he was 14 or

21:12

15 and started looking for

21:14

his mother. And he found her in

21:17

Indiana. He stayed with her for a few

21:19

weeks and then she helped him get into

21:21

the army. He joined in 59 but

21:24

was discharged six months later when they found he was

21:26

not of age to be in

21:28

the military. He basically lived a transient lifestyle

21:30

for the next few years. At

21:33

19 in 1962, he was convicted

21:35

of kidnapping and raping a four-year-old

21:37

girl from a bowling alley in

21:39

Georgia. And he received a 10-year

21:42

sentence. But after just six months

21:44

in prison, he was sent to a

21:46

mental health hospital where he remained until

21:48

he escaped in March of 63. And

21:50

the day after he escaped,

21:52

he robbed a bank in Macon, Georgia

21:54

and was apprehended the same day. Now

21:56

he admitted to the robbery but denied

21:59

or was arrested. raping the young girl.

22:02

In 1963, he pled guilty to the robbery charge

22:04

with a maximum sentence of 15 years and

22:07

got additional time for another attempt at escape. It

22:09

went to a halfway house in 1972. We're

22:12

setting up, this guy, we knew him as Clarence

22:15

in the beginning, but his real name is Franklin

22:17

Floyd. In 1973, while on parole, Floyd

22:20

kidnapped and attacked a woman. February

22:23

2nd, 1973, he was arrested in Atlanta, Georgia

22:27

for kidnapping and assault and released on

22:29

bail. So many opportunities

22:31

here, Aaron, to keep this guy behind

22:33

bars. If you rape a four-year-old,

22:35

I don't think you should be getting bail, but

22:38

that's just me. I mean, this guy is

22:40

showing himself to be a career criminal and

22:43

it's like the authorities don't really know who

22:45

they have here. Floyd failed

22:47

to appear in court on June 11th, 1973 for

22:50

the charges and was declared a federal

22:52

fugitive, but he's not just a fugitive

22:54

in the sense that, oh, we're gonna

22:57

be looking for him. No, he's evading

22:59

capture. He's on the run and apparently

23:01

he's staying several steps ahead of any

23:03

federal authorities. And this is in

23:05

the early 70s, he's

23:08

declared a federal fugitive, but somehow

23:10

Floyd is able to go on

23:12

through life undetected for the most

23:15

part. And this is

23:17

why when investigators are looking

23:19

into Michael's disappearance and information

23:22

about him, they're also looking

23:24

into this woman, Tanya,

23:27

who's died in the hospital.

23:29

They're combining the two investigations.

23:32

There's a woman who saw the news

23:34

about Michael's abduction and informed her daughter,

23:36

Jenny Fisher, that her old high school

23:38

friend Sharon Marshall was

23:41

on the news, but was being reported

23:43

as being Tanya Don Hughes. So Jenny

23:46

called the FBI hotline and say, I

23:48

know Tanya, or at least I knew

23:50

her, and that's not her name. Her

23:52

name is Sharon Marshall. And soon after

23:55

Jenny met FBI agent Fitzpatrick and the

23:57

two talked for hours, this

23:59

is where the... FBI is getting critical

24:01

information on who Sharon

24:03

Marshall really was. Jimin

24:30

underneath Sharon because she's like, Sharon is

24:32

this amazing person and she doesn't need

24:34

to be friends with people like us.

24:36

You know, it was just sort of

24:38

a funny antidote, but it's true. She

24:40

was friends with everyone. She did not

24:42

judge anyone. And that was

24:45

something that was very heartwarming to me

24:47

to hear about Sharon in this manner

24:49

in high school. But when

24:52

this investigator Fitzpatrick was

24:55

trying to confirm Floyd's

24:57

identity as Sharon Marshall's

25:00

husband, Jenny was kind

25:02

of taken aback and she said, that's

25:04

not her husband. That's her dad.

25:07

That's always been her father. And

25:10

Jenny knew him by the name of

25:12

Warren Marshall. So this

25:14

is a huge twist in the

25:17

case because this was her father.

25:19

Jenny thought he was weird and

25:21

she was always uncomfortable around him.

25:24

But at this point, the investigator

25:26

realized that Tonya had multiple

25:28

aliases as well. He

25:31

discovered that in 1989, Sharon

25:33

and Warren changed their names

25:36

to Tonya Tadlock and Clarence

25:38

Marcus Hughes. They found

25:40

the names on tombstones in Alabama and

25:43

they had adopted those names and

25:45

they got married in New Orleans

25:47

on June 15th, 1989. So

25:51

the investigators are trying to piece all

25:54

of this together and what was leading

25:56

up to Sharon Marshall's death. Really

25:59

just... a web of lies that they're

26:01

trying to navigate here. Sharon

26:04

attended Forest Park Senior High School and

26:06

graduated in 1986. And

26:08

according to her classmate and friend,

26:11

Sherry Fortson Bailey, Sharon was

26:13

part of the OutKast. She was in

26:15

the ROTC Science Club and the gifted

26:17

program. Sharon's dream was to

26:19

be an aerospace engineer and

26:22

attend Georgia Tech for college. Her

26:24

hard work during high school seemed

26:26

to pay off. She was accepted

26:28

into Georgia Tech's Aerospace Engineering Department

26:30

and received a full scholarship. But

26:33

Sharon's life was not great.

26:36

Sharon told friends her mother was hit by a

26:38

car on a bridge when she was in second

26:40

grade and passed away. She cooked dinner every night

26:42

and asked her friends not to phone her home

26:44

unless they planned a time to call. Instead,

26:46

she preferred to call her friends. And if her

26:48

dad came home, she quickly hung up. Warren

26:51

left a lasting impression on Jenny's parents

26:53

when he met Jenny's dad and immediately

26:55

asked for a loan. The family thought

26:57

Warren was weird and they didn't want

26:59

Jenny spending time at Sharon's house. But

27:02

one night, Jenny's dad was out of town and

27:05

she convinced her mom to let her stay

27:07

at Sharon's house. Not a

27:09

great idea, but Jenny's young. She doesn't know

27:11

any better. She just wants to hang out

27:13

with her friend. When she arrives

27:15

at the house, she notices

27:17

some strange things. There aren't any

27:20

doors in the house. There's only

27:22

curtains in all of the doorways.

27:25

In Sharon's room, she notices

27:27

that Sharon has a bunch

27:29

of lingerie, a lot of

27:32

sexy clothing in the

27:34

dresser. And Sharon says, oh, well, this

27:36

is what my dad bought for me.

27:39

And they're going to change clothes.

27:42

And Sharon's father barges into the

27:44

room with a gun and

27:46

he yells at them, what are you doing? So

27:49

one, they're half dressed. And two, he

27:52

has a gun. Jenny is

27:54

freaking out, screaming and attempting

27:56

to cover up when Sharon's

27:58

father laughs. and says, I'll

28:00

be back and he storms out of the room. So

28:03

they finish getting changed and

28:06

Sharon is trying to assure Jenny

28:08

that her dad is just Sally,

28:10

he just jokes around. But

28:12

when her father returns, he

28:15

still has the gun. He

28:17

instructs Jenny to get into her

28:19

sleeping bag on the floor and

28:21

place a pillow over her head.

28:24

So Jenny complies and then

28:26

she has to listen to

28:29

Warren who she thinks is

28:31

Sharon's father, rape Sharon

28:34

on the bed at gunpoint.

28:37

They don't speak for the rest of the night and

28:39

in the morning Sharon tries

28:41

to reassure Jenny, daddy's

28:44

just like that. You're okay,

28:46

I'm okay, just don't tell anybody

28:48

about this. That's

28:51

her experience at a

28:53

sleepover at Sharon's house. Around

28:56

graduation, Sharon's dreams were

28:58

crushed. She had all these dreams about

29:00

attending college and getting into aerospace engineering,

29:03

but she found out she was pregnant.

29:05

And according to Jenny, she wouldn't be

29:07

allowed to keep the baby or go

29:09

to college because someone needed to stay

29:11

home and care for her father. Not

29:13

long after that, Sharon called again and

29:15

said they were moving to Arizona where

29:17

she planned to give birth and put

29:19

the baby up for adoption. But

29:21

the Marshalls ended up in Tampa, Florida. Michael

29:24

Anthony Hughes was born on March 21st, 1988.

29:28

So they've left and

29:31

gone to Florida as soon as

29:33

Sharon reveals that she's pregnant. I

29:36

think this is to keep on the

29:38

move and not have to be accountable

29:40

to anybody. And obviously her friends back

29:43

home are gonna think, this is a

29:45

little fishy, why are you pregnant? You

29:47

don't have a boyfriend. In

29:49

1988, Sharon was working as an exotic

29:51

dancer at Mons Venus in Tampa, Florida.

29:53

And it was there she met Heather

29:56

Lane, a dancer who also booked and

29:58

planned private parties for the club. Heather

30:01

said Sharon was shy, very

30:03

innocent, and they became friends.

30:05

Dancers in the club told Heather that Sharon

30:07

had a weird relationship with her father and

30:10

this is something she found out for herself.

30:12

Sharon approached Heather and said her father told

30:14

her to ask about being hired for private

30:16

parties. Heather took Sharon to a

30:19

private party event for the millionaires club. Dancers

30:21

who worked these parties weren't touched and only

30:23

danced for three songs but made $500 to

30:25

$1,000 in

30:28

a single night. A man approached Heather

30:30

and asked her to get Sharon and

30:32

leave. Heather found Sharon near the bathrooms

30:35

offering sex work for $50 and Sharon

30:37

stated her father told her to do

30:39

it and even bought her condoms. Even

30:41

though it's a strip club and they're doing a

30:44

private party, this activity is

30:46

illegal and one of the men actually

30:48

came over and said, you need to get her out

30:50

of here. We don't want this shut down.

30:53

And the fact that Sharon saying her

30:55

father put her up to this, obviously

30:58

there's something wrong and Heather and all

31:00

the other dancers at this club are

31:02

thinking, what is going on here? What

31:05

is wrong with your father? Well, obviously

31:07

he's having her do this to

31:09

make money because it seems like

31:11

her dad isn't working. While

31:14

in Tampa, Sharon, Floyd, and Michael

31:16

lived in Golden Lantern trailer park.

31:18

According to Michael's babysitter, Michelle Couples,

31:20

she was in the trailer at

31:22

least seven times a week. She

31:24

was 15 at the time.

31:26

And she recalled that Floyd slept in

31:28

the living room on a pullout sofa.

31:30

And one night while Michelle watched Michael,

31:32

Floyd put a tape into the VCR to

31:35

record a wrestling match. But when the tape

31:37

was put in, a video came

31:39

up. So it wasn't to

31:41

record, this was actually playing. So

31:43

Floyd did something wrong there, but

31:45

it showed Sharon and another young

31:47

woman dancing topless at the beach.

31:49

And Michelle recognized the other woman

31:51

as Sharon's close friend and Monsvenor's

31:53

coworker, Cheryl. It was actually

31:55

Cheryl Comesso. And Floyd said the video was

31:57

just for fun. And he told Michelle not to.

46:00

In 2005, Birkbeck received an email from

46:02

an anonymous source who asked if the

46:04

DNA of Sharon's daughter could help in

46:07

the search. Mary and

46:09

Megan Dufresne discovered Birkbeck's book through a relative.

46:11

Megan was in junior high and knew she

46:13

was adopted after her birth mom was killed

46:15

in a car accident, but that was just

46:18

the tip of the iceberg. In

46:21

1989, Floyd and Sharon went by the

46:23

aliases Clarence and Tanya. They had gone

46:25

to an attorney's office in New Orleans

46:27

seeking help for adoption. Sharon

46:29

was pregnant again and they couldn't afford another

46:31

child. Mary Dufresne met

46:33

with Floyd and Sharon about adoption and

46:35

Floyd controlled the entire conversation according to

46:37

her. Despite the first

46:39

impression, Mary went forward with the

46:41

adoption and six weeks later Sharon gave

46:44

birth to Megan. Mary

46:46

had a brief conversation with Sharon while Floyd

46:48

wasn't in the hospital room, but Sharon

46:50

never indicated she needed help. And

46:53

Mary stated as soon as Floyd entered the

46:55

room, the conversation ceased. Throughout

46:57

the years, Sharon had at least three children. She

46:59

had a baby in high school who was allegedly

47:01

adopted though has never been identified. In

47:04

88, she had Michael and then in 89, Megan. Investigators

47:09

found Michael's birth father who was unaware

47:11

Sharon was pregnant and stated she moved

47:13

away without warning. The father of her

47:15

first child and Megan's birth father are

47:17

still unknown. So

47:20

Megan is the daughter of Sharon.

47:22

She's going to offer her DNA

47:25

and as we know, we can

47:27

take that and use it against

47:29

genealogy, start finding relatives.

47:32

But it's still upsetting to

47:34

me that it appears Megan

47:36

and Michael are products of

47:38

rape. So Megan

47:41

in 2011 had her DNA tested. They

47:45

got a match. They got some hits and

47:47

Sharon's name is still a mystery,

47:50

but they're getting some other

47:52

family members and they have to go and

47:55

interview people. They have to go

47:57

and look at different cases. reach

48:00

out to a forensic case manager

48:02

in the National Center for Missing

48:05

and Exploited Children and this is

48:07

Ashley Rodriguez who handled Sharon's case.

48:10

So she gets with Fitzpatrick and they're

48:13

going through all of this information

48:15

and going through all of these

48:17

police reports, kidnappings and

48:20

this is all resolved from

48:22

Michael's kidnapping because again, they

48:24

consolidated all of this to

48:26

Michael's kidnapping investigation. So

48:29

Ashley reaches out to the FBI

48:31

and they sent two special agents

48:33

to interview Floyd again. So

48:35

Floyd is incarcerated, Scott Lobb

48:38

and Nate Furr go in

48:40

to interview him. For

48:42

some reason, Floyd thinks that these

48:44

people are attorneys who are there

48:47

to represent him. So Floyd goes

48:49

off on a 45 minute rant.

48:51

As he does, he's upset with the

48:53

system. He's upset with his treatment behind

48:55

bars and these two FBI agents just

48:58

sit back and let them talk. They

49:01

just hear him out because

49:03

they're hoping he's going to

49:05

say something that gives them

49:07

some information about Sharon's identity

49:09

or implicating him more in

49:11

other crimes. Eventually,

49:13

they say, hey, we're not

49:15

your attorneys and then

49:18

Floyd starts going off on them

49:20

directly. Yeah, they

49:22

drive home to Floyd that they believe

49:24

that he wanted Michael to be the

49:26

new Sharon after Sharon died and

49:29

they keep pressuring him and Floyd

49:31

keeps trying to dodge and evade,

49:34

but eventually he starts getting emotional.

49:36

So they pressure him further and

49:38

Lobb actually slams his fist on the

49:41

table and demands to know how

49:43

Floyd killed Michael. Well, he

49:45

stops crying and then he confesses that he

49:47

shot Michael on the back of the head

49:49

twice to make it quick. Michael

49:51

Anthony Hughes was killed today. He was

49:54

abducted by Floyd on September 12th, 1994,

49:56

and Floyd told the agents he buried

49:58

Michael. near the Oklahoma, Texas border. For

50:01

two days, there was a team that

50:03

dug and sifted through the area. They

50:05

believed Michael was buried, but they were

50:08

unable to find his remains. Now

50:11

these agents interviewed Floyd because Michael's case

50:13

was reopened, but they also want to

50:15

discover who Sharon Marshall was. They had

50:18

their answer about Michael, but now they're

50:20

pushing Floyd to talk about Sharon. And

50:22

finally, he tells investigators he met a

50:25

woman named Sandy in Cherryville, North Carolina.

50:27

At the time, he was going by the

50:30

name Brandon Cleo Williams. He

50:32

married Sandy and took in her

50:34

three kids, including Suzanne Marie Zavakis.

50:37

Investigators located the birth certificate and

50:39

discovered both of Suzanne's parents were

50:41

still alive. Sandra, Brandenburg,

50:43

and Clifford Zavakis met in school

50:45

and dated throughout high school. Sandy

50:48

was two years younger. The two got married around the

50:50

time of her graduation. Sandy got

50:52

pregnant a few months after they married and had Suzanne

50:54

at 19. Suzanne Marie

50:57

Zavakis was born on September 6, 1969 in Livonia,

50:59

Michigan. When

51:02

Suzanne was born, Cliff was serving in the Vietnam

51:04

War and he finally got a week off to

51:06

meet his child when Suzanne was six months old.

51:10

But Cliff, he had served

51:12

in Vietnam. He had PTSD.

51:15

When he got home, he started to drink

51:18

and have a lot of issues. This

51:21

took a toll on their marriage and

51:23

they got a divorce. And

51:25

Sandy goes on to have two more girls,

51:28

Amy and Allison from another man.

51:30

But Sandy and her three daughters

51:32

had moved into a mobile home

51:34

park and a tornado

51:37

hit and flipped the trailer and

51:39

Sandy had her own problems now.

51:42

She'd struggled with mental health and

51:44

this tornado had literally turned her

51:46

life upside down. So

51:48

she went to social services for

51:51

help and told them like,

51:53

I'm having PTSD. I can't take care

51:55

of my children. I need help here.

51:57

And her children were taken from her

51:59

care. This is really

52:01

sad that all of these bad

52:03

things are happening to these people,

52:05

but social services reached out to

52:07

Cliff about adoption because they wanted

52:09

to keep all the children together.

52:12

That's how most of the time adoption works. But

52:15

Cliff was still in his early 20s. He

52:17

was unemployed, still struggling after getting

52:20

back from Vietnam. And

52:22

he said, I'm not able to be

52:24

a good parent. I can't take

52:26

care of these children. So the

52:28

girls are taken from Sandy and

52:31

she's struggling with this. So she

52:33

goes to church for comfort and

52:35

support and to pray for something

52:37

better. And that's

52:39

when she meets a man named Floyd

52:41

who approached her, sat down. He

52:45

talked to her and told Sandy that

52:47

God had sent him here to help

52:49

her. He claimed that they

52:51

could get married, get the children

52:54

back. He would take care of everything.

52:57

So Sandy in this lowest

52:59

point of her life has this kind

53:01

man coming in, sitting down and saying,

53:03

I'm going to take care of everything.

53:06

So they end up getting married and

53:08

it's pretty quick that she realizes

53:10

Floyd is not this angel sent

53:13

by God into her life to

53:15

make everything right because he carries

53:17

a knife around at all times

53:20

and he would threaten her with it

53:22

and say, you can't leave me. She

53:25

was very scared of him, but her

53:27

life has been turned upside down. So

53:29

she's reliant on him for financial support.

53:32

So she's stuck. She

53:34

goes to buy diapers for her

53:37

children and she writes a bad

53:39

check and this will get her 30

53:42

days in jail for the offense. While

53:45

she's in custody, Floyd disappears

53:47

with the children. So

53:49

she gets out, Floyd's gone, her children

53:51

are gone and she's going to

53:54

go to the police department and say, hey,

53:56

my husband took my children.

53:59

I need you to look into it. to this,

54:01

this is a kidnapping, but Aaron, this is before

54:03

Amber alerts were a thing and the

54:06

police look at Sandy and say, he's

54:09

your husband. He can do that. He

54:11

can take off with your children. So

54:14

Sandy's feeling like she has no other

54:16

recourse here because the police are saying

54:18

this is a civil matter. You need

54:20

to take this to the courts, divorce

54:22

courts, whatever, because there's nothing we can

54:25

do. Floyd will end

54:27

up dropping off Amy and Allison

54:29

at an orphanage, but he took

54:31

Suzanne and she just felt like

54:33

she had no other recourse here.

54:36

Well, she went to the authorities and they were no help.

54:39

So Mary, Megan's adopted mother, reached out

54:41

to Sandy once they found out Suzanne's

54:44

true identity. And according to Mary, Sandy

54:46

had no interest and did not care.

54:48

But Heather, Suzanne's friend for Mons Venus,

54:50

was abducted in 1976. She said

54:54

her mother did everything to find her and

54:56

she doesn't believe Sandy did the same for

54:58

Suzanne. At least the people from the

55:00

time believed that Sandy had given up. And

55:03

once she had given up, she put in her mind

55:05

that it was no longer something she was going to

55:07

deal with. But regardless of

55:10

anyone's opinion about the birth mom's

55:12

efforts, we're able to ascertain Sharon's

55:15

real identity, which is Suzanne.

55:18

And that is the whole conclusion

55:21

to this case is, who

55:23

was this person? We need

55:25

to give her a proper burial. We need

55:27

to get a headstone on

55:29

her grave with her real name, who

55:31

she was. To give her

55:33

her name back. So on June 3rd, 2017,

55:37

Suzanne Sveikis received a proper headstone.

55:39

Her initial headstone was engraved with

55:41

Tanya, and underneath the name, I'll

55:44

always be with you. Family

55:46

and friends, including Burbeck and Fitzpatrick attended

55:48

a small ceremony for the headstone reveal.

55:51

It read, Sveikis, Suzanne Marie, September 6th,

55:53

1969, April 30th, 1990, devoted mother and

55:55

friend. There's

56:00

video from the ceremony, and

56:03

her father Cliff is in front of the

56:05

crowd with Megan by his side, leaning on

56:07

his shoulder. It's unclear if

56:09

Sandy attended, but she is not seen

56:11

in the footage shown during this documentary

56:13

on Netflix. Later that month,

56:15

Megan had a son who she named

56:18

Michael in honor of her brother. Cliff

56:20

and Megan remain in touch and are

56:22

building a relationship. I

56:24

know a lot of people want to know

56:27

what happened to Franklin Floyd. He ended up

56:29

dying in a Florida prison, January

56:31

23rd, 2023, of natural causes, which

56:35

is, I'm sure some people would

56:38

have rather him be executed, but

56:40

he was on death row up

56:42

until his death. And

56:44

I take solace in that. I know

56:46

that being on death row is probably

56:48

the worst place to be behind bars.

56:51

So, yeah, I think he got what

56:53

he deserved as far as what the

56:55

legal system is capable of. Floyd

56:58

obviously dragged out legal

57:00

battles due to his

57:02

mental health issues, and he

57:04

was actually deemed incompetent multiple times.

57:08

His appeals, though, were never granted,

57:10

and he remained at this Florida

57:12

Correctional Institute until the time of

57:14

his death. I mean,

57:16

this guy was obviously a serial

57:18

killer, a serial rapist, a

57:21

psychopath, and needed

57:23

to be stopped and for

57:25

whatever reason, he was able to

57:27

keep one step ahead of authorities,

57:30

constantly change his name, constantly get

57:32

new victims, and even

57:34

get money to exploit what he

57:36

called his children. And

57:38

he used Michael to control the

57:41

situation because Suzanne would never leave

57:44

because she cared about her son.

57:47

It's true evil in my mind. We

57:50

finally got closure here, Aaron. We

57:53

have Sharon's true identity as Suzanne,

57:55

and we have Floyd no longer

57:57

walking on the Earth. Yeah,

58:01

that's about as much closure as you can

58:03

get in a case that includes this much

58:05

damage. The amount of damage

58:07

that Franklin Floyd did in his life is, I

58:09

mean, you can't calculate it. So

58:11

many families were affected by what he did.

58:14

And it started from a young

58:16

age when he was kidnapping that

58:19

young four-year-old from a bowling alley

58:21

and culminated in killing another child.

58:24

And in between there, so many

58:26

women either murdered or harmed because

58:28

of his actions. But I

58:30

believe that what you were talking about with

58:32

Suzanne and her true identity, this is

58:35

the silver lining. You can't

58:37

put everything back together, but we see here

58:39

where people are reaching out, relationships

58:41

are forming, fathers, daughters. You

58:44

have Suzanne's true name being revealed.

58:47

This is as a result of hard

58:49

work by many people. And

58:52

while we can't truly hold Floyd accountable

58:54

in a way that would feel satisfying

58:56

and we can't bring back those who

58:58

he murdered, we can at least say

59:00

all these people cared, they came together.

less than a month after the 9-11

attacks, the US and Allied forces invaded

1:00:32

Afghanistan. The goal was simple. Hunt down

1:00:35

al-Qaeda and its leader, Osama bin Laden,

1:00:37

and unseat the Taliban government that sheltered

1:00:39

him. But even though the Taliban was

1:00:41

quickly removed, negotiating an end to the

1:00:43

war turned out to be a much

1:00:45

bigger challenge. Despite some of

1:00:47

the world's best negotiators working tirelessly for

1:00:49

peace, all sides were never able to

1:00:51

come to a negotiated agreement. And in

1:00:53

2021, 20 years after being ousted

1:00:55

from power, the Taliban took back control of

of the world's smartest and most experienced

negotiators fail for 20 years

to mediate a peace deal in Afghanistan?
