  • Shadow Work Writing Exercise
  1. Name the issues you're struggling with currently.
  2. Think about what occurred between you, the current issue, and whomever else was involved in the issue.
  3. What was your response:
  • psychologically (what you thought)
  • emotionally (How you felt)
  • physically (Actions you took/didn't take as a result of the current incident)
  • What story about yourself did you begin to internalize as a result?

     4. Who and/or what past incident did the current issue & those involved remind you of? Why?

     5. How old were you:

  • Chronologically when the past incident occurred.
  • Developmentally (what age did you revert back to when past incident occurred?)

(Ex: you are/were 26 years old when the current issue happened, but you react the way your 15-year-old self did because the current issue is similar to the past traumatic incident you experienced at that age).

     6.  What have you learned about/from:

  • the current issue (positive and negative)
  • Those involved (positive and negative)
  • Yourself (positive and negetive)

     7. Reading the information written, use it to tell and internalize the truth

(Ex: This issue at hand is not my fault and never was. I was a child and didn't know what I was doing at the time).

     8. Connect with your Inner Child and the person you were when engaged in the current issue.

  • If you have photos of yourself, you can use them to connect with your Inner Selves. If not, then connect and imagine them standing in front of you.
  • What would you say to them? And what would they say to you?

     9. Practice self-compassion towards yourself and compassion towards the Inner Selves you connected with during this exercise.

  • Forgive yourself and them for past emotions felt and behaviors that followed because of the false story all of you believed.
