RATING
Such a great piece of storytelling and a fascinating look into a misunderstood/overlooked industry.
Although I do feel the first episode oversold the wacky hijinks involving the postage stamp collector, I thoroughly enjoyed this series. It certainly taught me to think about porn and the internet in a slightly different way.
This is like a Louis Theraux documentary but for your ears!A fascinating look at the impact of pornography becoming freely available online with the invention of Pornhub and the effect on numerous lives as a consequence. Don't be put off by the fact it's about porn. This podcast has covered this topic in a way that is tasteful and incredibly informative
Jon Ronson investigates an event that would otherwise be overlooked, and in doing so, he uncovers the nuances of an industry that no one else seems to care about: a world that no one really seems all that inclined to fully understand.
Tragic, interesting look into the death of a porn star. Ronson is extremely nonjudgmental and his voice is pleasant to listen to.
My review is mainly for The Butterfly Effect – it is a true delight to listen to the story told by the host, who's kind curiosity and nonjudgmental, empathetic inquisitiveness makes it really unique. My main issue with it is that they choose to keep referring to the concept of a 'butterfly effect', while it is clear that it is about specific actions of specific people. It is a story of exploitation of labour, it shows that for one oblivious tech bro to succeed, livelihoods of many have to be destroyed. What the Canadian guy did was not creating value, but taking it away from people doing the actual work. The Last Days of August brings about more darkness (which was significantly missing from the first part), and even though the kindness of the host is still there, a sense of uneasiness arises with each following episode.
