discretion is advised. Will
1:30
you triumph or will you fall to pieces? Both
1:32
outcomes are equally respectable. These
1:38
words were written by professional cyclist Colin Strickland
1:40
for Outside Online in 2021 of a gravel
1:42
racing, a new grittier style of long distance
1:44
off-road bike racing that
1:47
exploded in popularity during the pandemic. The
1:52
premise is simple. If you
1:54
want to know who the baddest person
1:56
on two wheels really is, this is
1:58
the spore for you. you. Unlike
2:01
road racing, gravel racing is most
2:03
certainly not a team sport. On
2:06
the course, it's every person for
2:09
themselves. In the same
2:11
article, Collins stated, every rider
2:13
is potentially your ally, and
2:15
every rider is potentially your
2:17
adversary. In gravel, there's
2:20
no BS or sneaky tactics. Everyone
2:23
races to win with honor. But
2:26
while this ethos might serve competitors
2:28
well on the race course, this
2:30
every person for themselves attitude doesn't
2:32
always translate perfectly into every aspect
2:35
of life. Certainly not
2:37
the equally competitive game of
2:39
love. And when
2:42
sneaky tactics are thrown into the
2:44
mix, well, that's a race with
2:46
the potential to turn deadly. Will
2:49
you triumph or will you fall
2:51
to pieces? Join
2:53
me now as we examine
2:55
the case of Anna Mariah Wilson, a
2:59
25 year old racing prodigy,
3:01
tragically murdered on the cusp
3:03
of becoming a superstar. You'll
3:06
also hear how Mariah unwittingly found
3:08
herself in the middle of a
3:10
love triangle, one she
3:12
tried her best to avoid. They
3:19
hadn't been friends for long, but in
3:21
the eight months or so they'd known
3:23
each other. Anna Mariah Wilson and Caitlin
3:26
Cash had hit it off. There's
3:28
just something about meeting a kindred spirit
3:31
in your mid 20s. It
3:33
doesn't happen often, but when it does,
3:35
you know you'll be friends for life.
3:38
Anna Mariah, who went by Mariah or
3:41
Mo, had met Caitlin on
3:43
the gravel bike racing circuit. Caitlin
3:45
was a competitive amateur, weekend warrior
3:48
type, while Mariah was the
3:50
best female competitor the sport has
3:52
ever seen. At
3:54
just 25, Mariah was
3:56
already the most successful woman in
3:59
American off-road. bike racing and making
4:01
an aim for herself in the community. We're
4:03
here in San Diego and we're joined
4:06
with Mariah Wilson. He came down from
4:08
Northern California to test out the Belgian
4:10
waffle ride. What do you think so
4:12
far? Really only been here
4:14
a couple hours so far. So still kind of
4:16
scoping it out, but did do a little bit
4:18
of a pre-ride earlier on some of the gravel
4:21
sections. So course seems sweet. I
4:23
think I have my set up dial. So
4:26
yeah, it's great. I'm stoked to be here. Although
4:29
Caitlin lived in Austin, Texas, she
4:31
also owned a property in Vermont
4:33
in the same town where Mariah's
4:35
family lived. And interestingly,
4:38
she'd actually become good friends
4:40
with Mariah's family before even
4:42
meeting Mariah herself. Although
4:44
she was definitely aware of who she
4:46
was. As Mariah
4:48
traveled around the country from race
4:51
to race, she crashed at the
4:53
cheapest accommodations available, just like the
4:55
other racers. Sometimes sleeping in
4:58
the back of a van, a camper,
5:00
a cheap rental if she was lucky.
5:03
Not always the most glamorous life, but
5:06
since becoming friends with Caitlin, whenever
5:08
Mariah traveled to Austin, she always
5:10
had a free place to stay
5:13
at Caitlin's tiny loft apartment above
5:16
a garage. On
5:19
May 10th, 2002, Mariah
5:22
flew into Austin Bergstrom Airport to compete
5:24
in a grueling 150 mile race called
5:28
the Gravel Locos. And
5:30
of course, Caitlin was there to pick her
5:32
up. As always, the friends
5:34
were excited to see each other. But
5:36
this time, they'd been so distracted by
5:38
each other that Mariah forgot to grab
5:40
her luggage from baggage claim and they
5:42
had to drive all the way back
5:44
to the airport to get it. When
5:47
they returned to Caitlin's apartment, the
5:50
friend shared her king sized bed
5:52
sleepover style, catching up and staying
5:54
up way too late. The
5:57
next morning, Caitlin made coffee and
5:59
breakfast. while Mariah assembled
6:01
her $15,000 lightweight racing
6:04
bike in the living room. That
6:06
afternoon, Mariah took her bike out to
6:09
the alleyway behind the apartment and started
6:11
off on a three-hour training ride. As
6:14
she left, Caitlin pulled out her phone,
6:16
snapped a quick photo of her friend,
6:18
and sent it to Mariah's mother with
6:20
the caption, "'Your girl is in safe
6:22
hands here in Austin.'" Not
6:25
long after Mariah set off riding, Caitlin
6:27
also left the apartment, locking the smart
6:29
lock in the front door behind her.
6:32
She was having dinner with some friends from
6:34
college that evening and wouldn't be back until
6:36
late, but she'd given Mariah her
6:38
own personal key code for the lock so she
6:41
could come and go as she pleased. Every
6:43
time someone locked or unlocked the door, an
6:46
alert was sent to an app on
6:48
Caitlin's phone, notifying her. At
6:51
4.30 pm, Caitlin saw the first
6:53
notification that Mariah had returned and
6:55
unlocked and then re-locked the door.
6:58
At 5.55, Caitlin got
7:00
another notification. Mariah had
7:02
left the apartment and locked the door
7:05
once again. Caitlin knew Mariah also had
7:07
plans that evening to go out for
7:09
dinner with Colin Strickland, another racer they
7:11
both knew. At 8.36 pm,
7:15
another alert showed Mariah's code had been
7:18
used again to unlock the front door,
7:20
but the door was never locked behind
7:23
her. When
7:26
Caitlin returned to her apartment just
7:28
before 10 pm, the front door
7:31
was still unlocked. Stepping
7:33
inside, Caitlin could see Mariah's feet
7:35
poking out from the entrance to
7:37
her bathroom. At first,
7:39
she just thought Mariah must have found
7:41
a hard, flat surface to stretch out
7:45
but as she walked closer and rounded the
7:47
corner, she saw a
7:49
massive pool of blood with
7:52
Mariah completely unresponsive. Immediately,
7:54
Caitlin dialed 911 and put it
7:57
on speaker phone as she started
7:59
searching for Mariah. CPR. For
8:01
the next 10 agonizing minutes,
8:03
she performed chest compressions
8:05
until EMS responders arrived
8:07
and took over. But
8:10
it was already too late. Mariah
8:13
had already been dead for
8:15
45 minutes. I
8:18
think I had just assumed that as soon as she
8:20
was taken to a hospital that she
8:22
was going to be okay. It
8:24
never actually crossed my mind in the chaos
8:27
of that night that she wouldn't be alive. But
8:30
she was dead. This
8:32
was already dead. I had a bad time. It
8:37
was through since it was three hours late
8:39
night. It's only
8:41
what we watched the breath in my hands and the
8:43
police station being tuned. I will
8:46
never forget that moment in the bathroom. Walking
8:50
her hands in the bed and wanting
8:52
to put it back in my hands because
8:55
we were only feeling how to waste it. Mariah
9:00
had been shot three times. Once
9:03
in the forehead, once in the temple
9:05
and once in her chest. The
9:07
bullet that had pierced her chest was
9:10
discovered lodged in the town floor beneath
9:12
the axe wound. This
9:14
man, whoever had done this,
9:16
had stood directly over Mariah's
9:18
body, took careful aim, and
9:20
intentionally fired the last round
9:23
straight into her heart. It
9:26
was impossible for police to ignore
9:28
the apparent symbolism in the homicide.
9:31
But whatever the motive had been,
9:33
it was clearly personal. But
9:36
the question on everyone's mind was,
9:38
who could have possibly wanted Mariah
9:40
Wilson dead? So
9:43
what felt like an eternity in the next evening? I
9:46
waited for her mom and dad to call me. He
9:50
told me, and it
9:52
was the hardest phone call in my life. She
9:56
was wailing, screaming.
10:00
I'm speaking words at first. It
10:02
was wrong. I got a rope. It
10:05
was the vocalization of her. The
10:07
rope had stopped. She was
10:09
confused and in disbelief. She
10:12
kept saying over and over again,
10:14
who would ever want to
10:16
hurt my baby? Some

11:19
We were moving to my long-term condition of life. See
11:21
what's up for details. Mariah's
11:23
mother Karen knew there was something
11:26
special about Mariah the day she
11:28
was born. Like an
11:30
unseen force inside of her, giving
11:32
her boundless energy. Karen
11:34
would later say, I gave birth
11:36
to her during a lightning storm and
11:38
that's how she left. Born
11:41
on May 8th, 1996. Anna
11:44
Mariah Wilson was raised in the town
11:46
of Eastburg, Vermont. A
11:48
tiny town with a population of
11:50
132 residents located
11:52
in what's known as the
11:54
Northeast Kingdom. A majestic
11:57
outdoor paradise near the Canadian porter.
12:00
and a haven for skiing and
12:02
mountain biking enthusiasts. And
12:04
Mariah Wilson, it seemed, was born to
12:06
do both. She certainly
12:08
had the pedigree. Her
12:10
father, Eric Wilson, had competed with the
12:13
US National Ski Team on the World
12:15
Cup circuit. Her mother,
12:17
Karen, was a cycling instructor who'd
12:19
also been on the US National
12:21
Ski Team. And if
12:24
that wasn't enough, her aunt, Laura, was
12:26
a cross-country skier for the US Winter
12:28
Olympics team, competing in 1994 and 1998.
12:33
Strength, endurance, and racing were in
12:35
Mariah's DNA, and she was skiing
12:37
competitively by the age of eight.
12:40
But as she got older, it
12:42
wasn't just her physical abilities catching
12:44
everyone's attention in northeast Vermont. She
12:47
seemed to have it all. Later,
12:50
when Rowan Garrity wrote about
12:52
Mariah for bicycling.com, he stated,
12:55
at times speaking to those who
12:57
knew Mo, felt like researching a
13:00
candidacy for sainthood. She
13:02
seemed cocooned from the base impulses
13:04
that defined so many of us.
13:07
After graduating high school, Mariah was
13:09
accepted into Dartmouth, an Ivy League
13:12
school, and the only school she
13:14
applied for. She raced
13:16
competitively for the school ski team,
13:18
but a series of injuries prevented
13:20
her from reaching her true potential.
13:24
In 2019, she graduated with her
13:26
engineering degree and turned
13:28
her attention to professional bike racing,
13:31
something she'd done since childhood as a
13:33
part of her cross-training regimen. Working
13:36
with a trainer, Mariah was put
13:38
through a series of scientific tasks
13:40
to see what her true physical
13:42
potential was. The results
13:44
blew the trainer away. Mariah's
13:47
functional threshold power numbers were already
13:49
on par with World Cup level
13:52
athletes. Physically, there was
13:54
no reason she couldn't be the best
13:56
in the world, and it
13:58
wouldn't be long before. before she was.
14:04
To pursue her dreams, Mariah moved
14:06
from Vermont to San Francisco, where
14:08
she began to train, race
14:10
and work as a demand planner
14:12
for specialized bikes. The same manufacturer
14:14
who'd built their first mountain bike
14:16
at age seven. But
14:18
not long after relocating, the
14:20
pandemic hit, closing the corporate
14:23
offices, and the races were
14:25
cancelled, but the trails were
14:27
wide open. Mariah
14:29
used her time wisely, training
14:31
nonstop, preparing for the
14:33
day when she could explode onto
14:35
the scene. And that's
14:38
exactly what happened. Only
14:40
the scene had erupted in
14:42
popularity during that same time.
14:45
In fact, during the pandemic,
14:47
bike sales across the United
14:49
States literally doubled. But
14:52
it wasn't traditional road cycling that
14:54
was leading the enthusiasm. Instead,
14:56
it was the sport called
14:59
gravel racing. During
15:01
a time when everyone was being
15:03
told to isolate as much as
15:05
possible, the rugged individualism of gravel
15:07
racing spoke to a whole new
15:10
generation of cycling fans. And
15:12
soon, even professional road
15:14
racers were signing up to
15:16
compete in off-road gravel events. And
15:19
at the center of the
15:21
entire gravel racing world was
15:23
the sports preeminent star, 34
15:25
year old Colin Strickland. The
15:28
poster boy for gravel racing, Colin
15:30
had dominated the men's competition before
15:32
the pandemic and had been on
15:35
the cover of magazines, writing articles
15:37
for outside online and sponsored by
15:39
Red Bull. My
15:42
name is Colin Strickland. I'm racing
15:44
for LA LA specialized for the
15:46
Red Hook series in
15:48
2016. I'm from Austin, Texas.
15:51
I've been racing the Red
15:53
Hook Crit series on and
15:55
off for approximately five years.
15:58
Every up and coming new sport. competition needs
16:01
its own rising star to
16:03
generate publicity and attract fans.
16:06
And in that sense, Collins legend in
16:08
the sport of gravel racing was solidified
16:10
in 2019 when a number
16:14
of professional road bike racers first
16:16
decided to compete in Gravel Racing's
16:18
biggest event of the year, Unbound
16:21
Gravel in Emporia, Kansas.
16:24
It was widely believed that the road
16:26
pros, the kind of guys that compete
16:28
in the Tour de France, would dominate
16:30
the gravel racers. But
16:32
that's not what happened. Instead,
16:35
Collins cruised over the finish line
16:37
in first place after having
16:39
led the entire pack for the final 100
16:42
miles of the race. Suddenly,
16:44
the entire sport of gravel racing
16:47
was legitimized in the eyes of
16:49
the cycling world as well
16:51
as its new top star, Colin
16:53
Strickland. When
16:57
the races opened back up in 2021, Mariah
17:01
was instantly a true contender. Throughout
17:03
the early part of the year, she
17:06
won a few smaller races and solid
17:08
showings at the bigger ones that really
17:10
mattered. And every time she went
17:12
out, she only got better and
17:14
better. By the fall, it
17:16
seemed like no one could touch her
17:19
and she was winning practically every race,
17:21
which is also around the time she
17:23
first met Colin Strickland. It
17:26
was a meeting eventually bound to happen,
17:28
with gravel racers traveling around the country
17:30
to pretty much all the same races.
17:33
And while it's cutthroat on the
17:35
racecourses, its camaraderie at the finishing
17:38
line, with the racers often training
17:40
together, camping and drinking together. Although
17:43
Mariah was a rising star, she still
17:45
had a lot to learn from an
17:47
OG gravel racer like Colin. Soon,
17:50
they were training tips on training, with
17:52
Colin giving Mariah a masterclass on how
17:54
to secure a good sponsorship deal. It
17:56
was after a race in Arkansas, and the race was over.
18:00
Arkansas, that Cullen would invite Mariah
18:02
out for their first training ride
18:04
together, which also ended up
18:06
being the first time Mariah and Caitlyn met.
18:09
For now, everything between Mariah
18:11
and Cullen was completely platonic,
18:14
but that would change a few
18:16
weeks later when Mariah came to
18:18
Cullen's hometown of Austin, Texas for
18:20
another race. Cullen
18:22
had just ended things with his
18:24
longtime partner, and coincidentally, Mariah had
18:26
just broken up with hers. That
18:29
week, Mariah crashed to Caitlyn's apartment,
18:32
which is when they first really
18:34
became friends. But that
18:36
was also the week when Mariah
18:38
and Cullen's relationship became something more.
18:42
Everybody in the racing community had
18:44
noticed Cullen and Mariah getting closer,
18:46
and so had someone else. Cullen's
18:49
ex-girlfriend. Suddenly, Mariah
18:52
was constantly getting calls from
18:54
the woman, demanding her to
18:56
stop seeing Cullen. After
18:58
all, she was still living with them.
19:01
In fact, the ex called Mariah
19:03
so many times, she had to
19:06
block the number completely. Cullen's
19:12
ex-girlfriend was 33-year-old Caitlyn Armstrong,
19:14
and in many ways. She
19:17
was the paragon of a millennial female
19:19
living in Austin, Texas. For
19:22
starters, she was a transplant from
19:24
the Midwest, having grown up outside
19:26
of Detroit. She was
19:28
also into yoga, which of course,
19:30
she made a big part of her personality.
19:34
Even once, spending four weeks in
19:36
Indonesia training to become a yoga
19:38
teacher herself. Professionally, Caitlyn
19:40
had worn many hats and seemed
19:43
to excel at whatever she put
19:45
her mind to, from working in
19:47
finance to becoming a successful realtor.
19:50
And like her ex, Cullen, Caitlyn was
19:52
a gifted athlete as well. But
19:55
she wasn't in the same league as Cullen
19:57
or any of the other professional racers. instead
20:00
for Caitlin. Cycling
20:02
was more like an enthusiastic hobby.
20:05
Plus, she loved being a part
20:07
of the incredible social scene surrounding
20:09
the races. And dating
20:11
a person some racers referred to
20:14
as Gravel Jesus certainly
20:16
didn't hurt. After
20:18
becoming a couple in
20:20
2019, Colin realized Caitlin's business
20:22
smarts were truly next level
20:25
and before long Caitlin was
20:27
helping Colin manage his racing
20:29
finances. Eventually, they
20:31
even started up the side
20:33
business together, fixing antique travel
20:35
trailers from the 1950s,
20:37
completely renovating the insides into
20:40
luxury mobile tiny homes. Colin
20:43
handled the power tools while Caitlin handled the
20:45
bucks and by fall of 2021, Colin and
20:50
Caitlin's lives were completely
20:53
intertwined, romantically, socially, recreationally
20:55
and financially. But
20:59
then, somewhere along the trail,
21:01
their relationship hit a bit of
21:03
a speed bump, mostly a combination
21:05
of a hundred little things that
21:07
all added up over time. For
21:10
example, Colin started getting tired of
21:12
always being dragged out to Caitlin's
21:15
yoga classes. Her
21:17
love for fast fashion brands that
21:19
he thought were tacky and unethical
21:21
also made him question their long
21:23
term compatibility and soon
21:26
Colin started downplaying the seriousness of
21:28
their relationship to friends. From
21:31
Caitlin's perspective, she started feeling more and
21:33
more boxed out from Colin's social life,
21:35
a feeling that came to a head
21:38
at the October race in Arkansas. This
21:41
is when Colin went on a training ride
21:43
with Mariah and another female racer. When
21:46
Caitlin asked if she could come along
21:48
too, Colin told her she'd only slow
21:51
them down. And although
21:53
that was definitely true, it
21:55
didn't make it sting any less. But
21:58
that wasn't the real issue. Not
22:00
only were the two other professional
22:02
riders both female, but one of
22:04
them was also Colin Zaks. A
22:07
woman he dated just before Caitlin
22:09
and the other was Mariah Wilson,
22:11
an up and coming hotshot nine
22:13
years younger than Caitlin. After
22:16
the big race, Colin and Caitlin agreed
22:19
to break up during their nine-hour car
22:21
ride back to Austin. A
22:23
week later, Colin began his romantic
22:26
fling with Mariah, and,
22:28
reportedly, Caitlin might have also gone on
22:30
a few dates of her own. But
22:33
while all this was going on,
22:35
Caitlin and Colin were still living
22:37
together, still running their business
22:39
together, and within five weeks
22:41
of their attempted breakup, they
22:43
were back together. But
22:46
it didn't appear. They never sent
22:48
Mariah the memo. Luckyland

24:00
was in relationship limbo, trying to
24:02
figure out if he'd have a
24:04

24:06
of his friends. He'd tell them
24:08
point blank about Caitlin, we're not
24:10
together, but this characterization
24:13
seemed to contradict statements he'd later
24:15
make to police when he referred
24:17
to his and Caitlin's short breakup
24:19
as nothing more than a blip
24:21
in their three year relationship. Still,
24:24
whether Colin really considered himself
24:26
single or not, one thing
24:29
is clear, either Caitlin
24:31
wasn't receiving the message or
24:33
Colin wasn't sending it because
24:35
in Caitlin's mind, they
24:38
were most certainly still a couple.
24:43
In January 2022, Caitlin and
24:45
Colin attended a race together
24:47
in Arkansas as a couple,
24:49
a race Mariah was also
24:51
at. During the
24:53
trip, Colin and Caitlin frequently crossed
24:56
paths with Mariah. At
24:58
one point, Colin was even seated between the
25:00
two women at a dinner table. Needless
25:03
to say, people were confused by
25:05
the whole situation, most
25:07
of all Mariah. And
25:10
here's where we need to start reading between the lines
25:12
a little bit, because after
25:14
that weekend, Mariah sent Colin a
25:16
text message that read, so
25:18
I would like to talk to you at
25:21
some point. This weekend was strange
25:23
for me, and I just want to know what's
25:25
going on. If you just want to be
25:27
friends, seems to be the case,
25:29
then that's cool, but I'd like to talk
25:31
about it, cause honestly, my mind has been
25:34
going in circles and I don't know what
25:36
to think. Clearly, Mariah
25:38
was surprised Colin still seemed to be
25:40
in a relationship with Caitlin. And
25:43
here she was, giving him an opportunity to
25:45
be honest and an easy out if he
25:48
wanted it. But instead
25:50
of answering her question directly, Colin
25:52
apologized for making her feel uncomfortable
25:54
and said it was a bad
25:56
idea to bring Caitlin along. exactly
26:00
the definition of clarity. Colin
26:03
claimed that after this interaction,
26:06
his and Mariah's relationship was
26:08
strictly platonic. But at
26:10
some point after this rather awkward
26:12
weekend, Colin changed Mariah's contact name
26:15
in his phone to Christine Wall
26:17
and continuously deleted her text threats
26:19
so there'd be no record of
26:22
them. He would
26:24
later state that this was his
26:26
way of maintaining a professional relationship
26:28
with Mariah without triggering Caitlyn. Or
26:32
was there another reason? Was
26:34
Colin keeping both doors open
26:36
just in case? While
26:38
he may have thought both women were
26:41
completely oblivious by this point, he
26:43
was wrong. What
26:48
Colin failed to realize was that
26:50
his computers and phone were always
26:52
connected through iMessenger. And
26:55
since Caitlyn lived with Colin and
26:57
they shared computers and she
26:59
knew his passwords, that meant
27:01
Caitlyn had access to everything he'd
27:03
been sending to Mariah potentially for
27:06
months. In the
27:08
background, Caitlyn began stalking Mariah
27:10
online, starting by following Mariah's
27:12
social media, including her
27:14
Strava account. That's an
27:17
exercise app that allows you to upload
27:19
GPS maps and other stats of your
27:21
training. On May 11, 2022, when Mariah set
27:23
off on her training ride from
27:27
her friend's apartment, it had all
27:29
been recorded on Strava, showing the
27:31
exact location where she started and
27:33
ended her ride, which
27:35
meant it was easy for Caitlyn to determine
27:38
this must be where Mariah was staying in
27:40
Austin. Just before a
27:42
ride, Mariah messaged Colin to ask if he
27:44
had any plans for the night. A
27:47
few hours later, Colin invited her to go
27:49
out with them. Mariah then
27:51
messaged him her friend's address, 1708
27:54
Maple Avenue, Apartment B, so
27:57
he'd know exactly where to pick her up. There's
28:00
no way to know for sure if Caitlin
28:02
was reading these messages. It does
28:04
seem to be the case. Because
28:06
just five minutes later, Caitlin logged
28:09
into Strava to check Mariah's recent
28:11
activity map. Around
28:13
6pm, Colin picked Mariah up on
28:15
the back of his motorcycle, and
28:17
10 minutes later, they arrived at
28:19
a famous local community pool called
28:21
Deep Addis. As
28:23
they swam, Caitlin called and
28:25
texted Colin's phone several times,
28:27
but he completely ignored them.
28:30
A minute later, she sent him a text
28:32
asking him if he wanted to get something
28:34
to eat. Again, that
28:37
message was ignored. But
28:39
if Caitlin had been reading his messages,
28:42
that meant she already knew exactly where
28:44
he was, what he was doing, and
28:46
who he was with. At
28:51
6.30pm, Caitlin grabbed the 9mm
28:53
handgun Colin had bought for,
28:55
hopped into her black jeep
28:57
and started driving. All
28:59
the while, Mariah and Colin were sharing
29:02
burgers and drinks. Footage
29:04
from security cameras in Caitlin's neighborhood would
29:07
later show Caitlin's black jeep driving around
29:09
and around the area for a better
29:11
part of an hour, like
29:13
his sharks circling before an attack.
29:16
At 8.35pm, Colin dropped Mariah back
29:19
off at the apartment and sped
29:21
off on his motorcycle. One
29:23
minute later, Mariah's friend got a
29:25
notification that the front door of
29:28
her apartment was unlocked, but never
29:30
locked after. One
29:32
minute after that, Caitlin's black jeep
29:34
pulled into the alley behind the
29:36
apartment. Suddenly
29:38
Colin was texting Caitlin again,
29:41
hey are you out? And
29:43
what he would later describe as an
29:45
attempted alibi. He told Caitlin
29:47
he'd been out delivering marijuana to a
29:49
friend and that his phone had died.
29:52
He then asked if she wanted to go out and grab a
29:54
bite to eat. 30 minutes
29:56
after eating burgers with another woman. exactly
30:00
what happened next but a
30:02
doorbell camera from one of
30:04
Caitlin's neighbors captured the horrifying
30:06
audio. At
30:13
9.15pm Mariah Wilson can be
30:15
hurt screaming in terror. Seconds
30:18
later the sound of two gunshots
30:20
and quick succession pierced the night.
30:25
For five seconds all
30:27
is perfectly quiet. Until
30:30
the third and final gunshot
30:32
rings out. That
30:36
night when Caitlin came home she
30:39
and Colin shared a whiskey together
30:41
before becoming intimate. Neither
30:43
of them were very interested in
30:45
talking about where they'd been. When
30:52
detectives began investigating Mariah's murder it didn't
30:54
take long before they had their first
30:57
person of interest. Of
30:59
course it was Colin, the last person known
31:01
to have seen Mariah alive. They
31:03
also found security footage which showed a
31:06
black Jeep arriving in the alley behind
31:08
the apartment where Mariah was shot with
31:10
a distinctive bike rack mounted on it.
31:13
But they couldn't make out the license plate or
31:15
see the driver. Body camera
31:17
footage from the next morning captured the
31:19
moment detectives arrived at Colin's house. He'd
31:22
been out in his garage working on his
31:25
bike when they broke the news to him
31:27
about Mariah's murder and there was no question
31:29
about his body language. Colin
31:31
was clearly shocked and shaken to the core
31:34
by the news. Detectives
31:36
also noticed a black Jeep with the
31:38
same distinctive bike rack parked in his
31:40
driveway. Colin agreed to
31:43
go to the police station for an official
31:45
interview which ended up lasting six and a
31:47
half hours. While Colin
31:49
was being interviewed police executed a
31:51
search warrant at his house where
31:54
they secured two 9mm handguns, one
31:56
belonging to Colin and the other to Caitlin.
32:00
learned the black Jeep belonged to Caitlin,
32:02
she too was brought in for questioning.
32:05
Interestingly, there was already an act of warrant
32:07
out for her arrest after she skipped out
32:09
on a $600 Botox
32:11
payment years earlier. Because
32:14
of the warrant, Caitlin was brought down
32:16
to the station in handcuffs, but she
32:19
wasn't nearly as cooperative as Colin. After
32:22
stonewalling the detectives' questions and asking for
32:24
a lawyer, police had little choice but
32:26
to tell her she was free to
32:28
go. Because apparently the
32:30
Botox arrest warrant had a typo
32:32
on her birth date and they
32:34
incorrectly assumed the warrant must have
32:36
been for a different Caitlin Armstrong.
32:39
When detectives asked Colin if he
32:41
thought it was possible Caitlin had
32:44
murdered Mariah, he told them no,
32:46
saying he couldn't imagine Caitlin hurting
32:48
another person and even called her
32:50
a softie. He also
32:53
characterized Caitlin as one of the
32:55
least volatile people he'd ever met
32:57
and said she was neither jealous
33:00
nor needy during their relationship. After
33:03
his interview, Colin even apologized to
33:05
Caitlin for dragging her into the
33:07
situation. It appeared
33:10
the idea of Caitlin murdering
33:12
Mariah had never entered Colin's
33:14
mind as even a remote
33:16
possibility. Over
33:19
the next several days, police received
33:22
some interesting tips from a few
33:24
of Caitlin's close friends, suggesting she
33:26
might be the killer. One
33:29
of them told police how Caitlin had
33:31
said she wanted to murder Mariah back
33:33
in January, though at the time she
33:36
assumed it was just a joke. Police
33:39
were also able to rule out Colin
33:41
as a suspect when they discovered that
33:43
multiple cameras had captured him riding away
33:46
from Mariah's apartment before the murder. His
33:49
cell phone records also confirmed he was home
33:51
when the murder took place. As
33:54
for Caitlin's cell phone, it had
33:56
been conspicuously switched off between the
33:58
hours of 7-3. and
34:00
9.30 p.m. that same night.
34:03
But on May 17th, just
34:05
six days after the murder,
34:07
police found the hard evidence
34:09
they were looking for. Holistic's
34:11
testing on Caitlin's personal gun,
34:13
a Sig Sauer P365, revealed
34:15
it to be a direct
34:17
match to the murder weapon.
34:20
It was time to make an arrest, but
34:23
by that time Caitlin Armstrong
34:25
was nowhere to be found.
34:28

34:30

34:32

VTW. Avoid or prohibited by law. See terms
36:02
and conditions. News of Mariah's
36:05
murder and Caitlin's flight from
36:07
justice ignited an international media
36:09
firestorm. The story involving
36:11
professional athletes was not only
36:13
considered highly salacious, but it
36:16
also unfolded in the aftermath
36:18
of the wildly publicized events
36:20
surrounding Gabby Petito's murder and
36:22
the extensive manhunt for Brian
36:24
Laundrie that dominated headlines through
36:26
a 2021. Realizing
36:30
it was only a matter of time
36:32
before police locked onto her, Caitlin hadn't
36:34
even waited 24 hours after
36:36
being interviewed by police to make
36:39
her escape. Instead,
36:41
she straight up bolted. On
36:44
May 13th, Caitlin drove her black Jeep
36:46
to a car dealership and sold it
36:48
for $12,000,
36:50
giving her the cash she needed for
36:52
her untraceable flight from justice. Then
36:55
she took an Uber to the airport and bought
36:57
a ticket to New York, flying out
36:59
early the next morning. It
37:02
wasn't until May 25th that police
37:04
discovered surveillance footage of Caitlin boarding
37:06
her flight to New York. By
37:09
this time, she'd already had an 11
37:11
day head start. But
37:13
there was one interesting thing police noticed
37:15
in the airport footage. On
37:18
her back was a yoga mat. Police
37:20
soon discovered that Caitlin had a younger
37:23
sister who lived in New York and
37:25
worked at a campground about two hours
37:27
north of the city. Some
37:29
locals even told police they'd seen
37:31
Caitlin there. To make
37:33
sure Caitlin didn't pull the same trick
37:36
again and fly away, police checked all
37:38
the flight logs and manifests leaving New
37:40
York City. For the
37:42
time being, police believed Caitlin was
37:44
still within the United States because
37:46
her passport hadn't been used to
37:48
exit the country. But
37:51
here's where they were wrong. Using
37:54
her sister Christine's passport, Caitlin had
37:56
already boarded a flight from New
37:58
York to San Jose. Costa Rica
38:00
on May 18th and
38:03
looking at photos of the sisters, it's
38:05
easy to see why it had worked
38:07
since they shared a strong resemblance.
38:10
Christine would later claim, under
38:12
oath, that Caitlyn had taken
38:14
her passport without permission. Even
38:17
so, Christine deliberately avoided using the
38:19
word stolen to describe how Caitlyn
38:22
came to be in possession of
38:24
it. After arriving
38:26
in Costa Rica, Caitlyn made her
38:28
way to the sleepy surfside paradise
38:30
of Santa Teresa, where she
38:33
checked into a tropical hostel and started
38:35
calling herself Ari. Trying to
38:37
blend in with the other backpackers, Caitlyn
38:39
started working at the hostel's front desk
38:42
and teaching yoga classes on the beach.
38:45
She also went through considerable efforts
38:47
to change her appearance, cutting
38:49
her hair and dying in a different color.
38:52
Then she took it 10 steps further
38:54
when she spent $6,000 on
38:57
cosmetic surgery at a local clinic, getting
38:59
a brow lift and nose job. As
39:02
a fan of Game of Thrones, we wondered
39:05
if perhaps Caitlyn had been one as well,
39:07
and here's why. In the
39:10
show, one of the main characters, Aria
39:12
Stark, doesn't only pretend to be someone
39:14
else by using the name Ari, but
39:16
she also becomes an assassin with the
39:19
ability to change the look of her
39:21
own face. In any case,
39:23
it was certainly a fitting numb
39:25
to care. In
39:28
total, Caitlyn was able to remain
39:31
completely off the radar for 43
39:33
days, a considerably long time
39:35
when the whole world is out looking for
39:37
you. And the truth is, she
39:40
was extremely close to disappearing
39:42
forever and starting a completely
39:44
new life. But do
39:46
you want to know how the marshals finally tracked
39:48
her down? By the time
39:50
authorities realized Caitlyn had escaped the
39:52
country using her sister's passport, enough
39:54
time had gone by that she
39:56
could have literally been anywhere on
39:58
Earth. The only way for
40:01
them to be able to find her now was
40:03
if she made a mistake, something
40:05
remarkably predictable. Detectives
40:07
honed in on the yoga mat she'd
40:10
been seen traveling with, and
40:12
by that time, had combed over
40:14
every inch of Caitlin's life. They
40:17
knew wherever Caitlin was, she would have found
40:19
a way to continue doing her yoga, or
40:21
at least found a place to teach it.
40:24
Throwing up a Hail Mary, the
40:27
U.S. Marshals contacted a number of
40:29
international agencies, telling them to be
40:31
on the lookout for newly arrived
40:34
English speaking yoga enthusiasts. And
40:36
it wasn't long before an officer in
40:39
Costa Rica located Caitlin at the hostel
40:41
in Santa Teresa on June 29th. And
40:43
how he found
40:45
her was because she fit the
40:47
marshal's description to a T. It
40:51
was really old-fashioned law enforcement
40:53
tactics, techniques that were
40:55
used to really communicate information to
40:57
the foreign nationals to facilitate that
41:00
type of arrest where she's now
41:02
being detained on a immigration
41:04
violation where she used that fraudulent passport when
41:06
she entered the country of Costa Rica. Once
41:08
she got to Costa Rica, she didn't really
41:11
move around a lot. We
41:13
knew she was going to be associated with
41:15
some type of yoga studio. After
41:18
Caitlin's arrest, authorities discovered a
41:20
locker with her personal belongings.
41:23
Inside they found her passport, her
41:26
sister's passport, and a receipt for
41:28
six thousand dollars worth of plastic
41:30
surgery. But the crazy thing
41:32
is, if Caitlin had only taken up a
41:34
new hobby, anything but
41:37
yoga, it's very possible we'd
41:39
still be talking about the
41:41
ongoing international manhunt for her.
41:44
Instead, Caitlin was captured and deported
41:46
back to the United States, where
41:48
she was put on trial for
41:50
the premeditated murder of Mariah Wilson.
41:56
No one else in the world had
41:58
a six-hour P-360. and
42:01
left their DNA at the scene. Nobody else
42:03
in the world fit that description. No
42:05
one else in the world was angry that
42:07
their boyfriend was out with Mo Wilson.
42:10
Yes, sir. No one else
42:12
in the world had their Jeep circling 1708B
42:14
Maple for an hour before
42:18
you heard that 915 shot. No
42:21
one else in the world matched that description.
42:24
And finally, no one else
42:26
in the world left the scene of the murder in
42:30
Caitlin Armstrong's Jeep that
42:33
was parked in an alley from 840PM
42:35
two minutes after the murder. We don't need
42:37
no one else in the world to
42:40
make these facts true. During
42:43
Caitlin Armstrong's trial in 2023, her defense
42:46
attempted to argue she was innocent, but
42:51
the sheer amount of evidence against her
42:53
was overwhelming. Not
42:55
only had her personal handgun been used
42:57
to commit the murder, but her DNA
42:59
was also found at the crime scene.
43:02
And even though she turned off her
43:05
cell phone during the murder, she'd forgotten
43:07
that her SUV had an internal GPS
43:09
record for her every move. And
43:12
if all this wasn't enough, fleeing
43:14
to Costa Rica using a false
43:16
passport and getting
43:18
plastic surgery to change her appearance
43:21
was certainly evidence of a guilty
43:23
conscience. It also didn't
43:25
help her case. When just 19 days
43:28
before her trial began, Caitlin made
43:30
another escape attempt during a doctor's
43:32
appointment. Using a
43:35
pin to pick the lock on
43:37
her handpiece, Caitlin sprinted away from
43:39
the correctional officers and managed to
43:41
run an entire half mile before
43:43
finally being apprehended. You
43:46
can see her sprinting along the
43:49
fence in the video beforehand, and
43:51
the police officer runs across a
43:53
parking lot. And then
43:55
afterwards, she falls off the fence
43:57
and then runs around a tree. who
44:01
shot the video. It's Teresa
44:03
Rangel and our Nancy Lou
44:05
was able to track her down and she joins me now
44:07
live. See somebody running, I'm like, oh my God, this girl's
44:10
really running from the cops. And I was like,
44:12
hold on, let me park. Let's keep
44:14
capturing this. Now park, and then I just
44:16
got my camera and I just recorded it and I was
44:18
like, she's really running. I had no clue who
44:20
she was. They just couldn't catch her.
44:22
I was like, y'all can't catch her? She didn't
44:24
even look like she was going that fast either.

45:35
not just running from the sheriff's department. No,
45:38
sir. That's
45:41
19 days before this trial. She's
45:43
running from you and you and you
45:45
and you and you and you
45:48
and you and she's running from all of you
45:50
on the back row. If you are
45:53
a jury of her peers and you
45:55
can see it in this video, she didn't
45:57
want to face you. After a 90. trial,
46:00
it only took the jury about
46:02
two hours to reach a unanimous
46:04
guilty verdict, and Caitlin
46:06
was sentenced to 90 years behind
46:08
bars for the murder of Mariah
46:10
Wilson. During
46:16
sentencing, Mariah's family and friends
46:18
took the opportunity to express
46:20
their heartbreaking impact statements before
46:23
the court, including Mariah's
46:25
mother, Karen Wilson. I
46:28
think what you did to my beautiful daughter, it was
46:32
very helpful, she nodded with
46:34
me and turned 11,
46:36
it was cowardly, because
46:38
you never showed the face
46:41
how a woman's home in
46:43
a civil teacher's station. She
46:45
wasn't listened. It
46:47
was an amazing listener. And
46:50
when she told me what she was doing, she
46:53
wasn't preparing to do this to her friends. If
46:56
you had yourself eventually remembered,
46:58
you'd never hear
47:00
her look, even to her story. She
47:03
didn't even say anything. You
47:07
and Colin could have had a beautiful life
47:09
together. You, destroyed
47:11
us. You were only
47:13
nearby. Your family was,
47:16
their lives, we crushed the hearts
47:18
of many more. When
47:20
you first, Mariah had the heart, I
47:23
shot you in my heart. The
47:27
tragic truth is, Caitlin Armstrong
47:29
had become completely blinded by
47:32
a one-sided romantic rivalry
47:34
that Mariah wasn't likely even
47:36
aware of herself. It's
47:39
heartbreaking to consider the simple
47:41
wisdom of Mariah's mother's words.
47:44
That if Caitlin had just been willing to
47:46
have a conversation with Mariah, none
47:48
of this would have ever happened. One
47:51
of the things that jumps off the
47:53
page while reading stories and articles about
47:56
Mariah Wilson is that you can't find
47:58
a single bad word. that
48:00
anyone has ever said about her. Everyone
48:03
who ever knew her personally reached
48:05
the same conclusion almost immediately. The
48:08
same conclusion her mother made from the
48:10
day she was born. That
48:13
there was just something special about
48:15
her. And
48:24
now I'd like to introduce the
48:26
podcast, Love, Lust, Fear. The
48:28
first time I spoke to him, I blocked him. I
48:30
was like, oh, it's just giving me a bad vibe.
48:33
So I walk in, my heart's
48:35
like racing, and then he said, why
48:37
don't you take my room? I won't
48:39
do anything. I'm not that kind of
48:42
guy. I mean, I couldn't avoid
48:44
him. Even when I was blocking, there
48:46
were the other accounts. We had been
48:48
together probably as good, maybe two years,
48:50
and then I got pregnant. And then
48:52
it was like, now you gotta marry
48:54
this guy. Even with all of
48:56
the red flags. I knew the neighborhood where he was
48:58
taking me to. So I knew if I had to
49:00
make a run for it, I could get out of there. You
