It may be burned out a recent study by limeade in or that researches and hopes to improve employee well-being being, burnout as the top reason people are resigning and the American psychological. Association also reports burnout levels are at an all time high, so we're talking with to experts today starting with Dr. Monica Johnson, she's clinical psychologist and the host of the. savvy Psychologist Podcast: She'll explain how to identify, prevent and deal with worker burnout, we discuss the difference between just feeling tired and actual burn out as well as what she calls. Your mental health day. The thing. Welcome. Every Monday through Friday for our regular episodes are, we provide all the day's news in ten minutes America, Mandy, it's now time for today's special, innocent Saturday. Dr. Monica Johnson. Thank you for coming on the newsworthy. Thank you. So first, I just want to your take on. What worker burnout is. How would you describe it? Simple definition of burnout is? a?

1:19

The call emotional and mental exhaustion

1:22

and it's caused by excessive

1:25

and longstanding stress, what's

1:28

the difference between actual burn

1:30

out versus feeling tired or

1:32

unmotivated in your? Shop with feeling

1:34

just tired or unmotivated,

1:36

these are usually temporary state like

1:39

you wake up and you're having a bad day

1:41

or you know you have really stressful

1:44

week because of an important deadlines.

1:46

That coming out, whereas burnout

1:48

is really gradual process, it

1:50

doesn't happen overnight, the

1:52

Simpsons slowly prepare, and

1:55

what would you say are some of the main symptoms

1:57

that don't go away, so the system

1:59

is it? The main categories

2:01

you can have. A hero fans,

2:03

I've been out which can be seeing

2:05

flag trying that. The outer avoiding

2:08

certain responsibility and isolating

2:10

yourself from other people you might.

2:12

The that you're procrastinating a lot more than

2:14

you normally was, you may also be lot

2:17

more irritable and have

2:19

more anger like lasting. Anger.

2:21

And things like that, AH, you may also

2:24

find excuses to skip

2:26

work or skip certain activity that

2:28

you would normally and case, and some

2:30

people may see an increase

2:32

in. Their youth of stuff and so

2:35

this could be alcohol can be draws, the

2:37

can also be over eating with

2:39

food from the emotional

2:41

standpoint, lot of times

2:43

people will. Start to feel detached

2:46

from their work and also sometimes from

2:48

other people as well, ah, you

2:50

also all quite often

2:52

notice like decrease in satisfaction

2:55

just overall it can be. In your job,

2:57

but you may also noticed that in other areas

2:59

wow People will often report

3:01

feeling trapped defeated

3:04

overwhelmed. Helpless. You

3:06

also may have lot of internal

3:09

like criticism and feelings of like

3:12

self-doubt or failure and there's

3:14

definitely an overall change in your motivation

3:16

level from the physical standpoint.

3:18

You can also see lot

3:21

of this in your body.

3:23

As far as headaches. I have

3:25

patients that have things like IBS

3:28

or psoriasis and

3:30

they will see these conditions start

3:32

to worsen when they're in a

3:34

period of burnout. You

3:35

can also see your lowered immune system

3:38

from the gist consistent stress. And

3:40

those. Can we it's just more frequent

3:42

a illnesses. Do

3:44

you think that the pandemic has had

3:46

an or increase the instances

3:48

of people feeling burnt

3:50

out? absolutely one of the way that

3:52

I try to conceptualize as for my patience

3:54

to do this concept of like a mental

3:56

health think everything in life is

3:58

either deposits are. Draws. into

4:00

when you look at something like the pandemic,

4:03

it is consistent, huge withdraw

4:06

from your emotional and mental

4:08

like resources and if you

4:10

don't have appropriate coping skills

4:12

to kind. Of put more deposits and

4:15

be aware of the signs and symptoms burnout,

4:18

then it will kind of take

4:20

you out and lot of way.

4:22

I would imagine that burn out tends to impact

4:24

marginalized groups of people such as people

4:26

of color more often. Then you speak

4:28

on that.

4:29

Sure, I mean, I'm mortally groups

4:31

can be impacted a lot more. It didn't

4:33

work setting because there may

4:35

not be lot of representation. How?

4:38

Often have been working with peace

4:40

in the last time, they may be the

4:42

only black person or the

4:44

only gave person that

4:47

works on their team so there

4:49

can be like. A level of

4:51

skill and like an outsider in those

4:53

environments and also having to deal

4:56

with sometimes tokenism, sometimes

4:58

you're in situations where their

5:01

policies in place or a culture

5:03

that. Feel like it has persistently

5:05

against you as person and for

5:08

you have to figure out how to

5:10

navigate those situations and

5:12

or personally with again, thanks

5:14

lot of resources. To do.

5:16

The Let's Talk About Prevention and Recovery

5:19

is the first, how can we present ourselves

5:21

from going down a path that leads to burn out

5:23

the first episode?

5:24

The be mine fully aware of, like,

5:26

your signs and symptoms I'm at school

5:28

till, like, make a notation of these things actually

5:30

write it down so you can be aware

5:33

of that. And you have to make commitment.

5:35

You actually taking care of yourself,

5:38

one of the most basic things that I saw my patients

5:40

do is use all of your PC of

5:42

take the time for yourself, be mindful

5:45

about what you need to recuperate because

5:47

you will. The different things at different times.

5:49

You know, sometimes you need a say case, and

5:51

we're just at home reading book,

5:54

getting caught up on kind of house whole

5:56

thing and just being mellow

5:58

and other times you need. Then.

6:00

White actually traveling to place

6:03

and engaging in something that exciting

6:05

you really want to pay attention to what

6:07

your needs are because if you do the

6:10

wrong thing that. Will actually make

6:12

your burnout works and, and what I mean by

6:14

that is, if you do too

6:16

much social activity that will drain

6:18

your system is by far the type of.

6:20

Rest that you need you

6:23

have the one think. about just

6:25

basic health behaviors how

6:27

often are you working out do you

6:29

have a pretty good diet are

6:31

you avoiding mood altering substances

6:34

all of these things will make big difference

6:36

sleep is also big one so

6:38

those are the primary things you can do

6:40

to prevent burnout

6:42

And what about recovery, I imagine some

6:44

of it is the same, but anything in addition

6:46

that you would do if you're already in a state

6:48

of burnout, yeah, I mean, a lot

6:50

of it is gonna be the.

6:52

I think the with the recovery process

6:55

on the thing that I'll let people now. Oh, is

6:57

that if you're engaging in these behaviors you also

6:59

have to give it time, the best

7:01

case for burnout is to prevent it

7:04

because once burnout set then,

7:06

depending on the person. What? Other factors

7:08

you have going on, for instance, if you

7:10

have actual mental health concerns

7:12

like depression or anxiety, you know

7:14

as far as a recovery period as it may

7:16

take longer. Than you know, just

7:18

one vacation, you may be actively

7:21

working on ten of digging yourself out of the

7:23

whole for few months. The

7:25

you want to be mindfully are aware

7:28

of that. And just because it doesn't work

7:30

of immediately, that doesn't mean that

7:32

processes that you're engaging in. The not

7:34

gonna work for you and lot.

7:36

If a person's job it is causing them to

7:38

feel burnt out and there's nothing on their

7:41

personal level that they can do to change that,

7:43

how would you recommend handle the situation?

7:45

So any time I'm working with someone one.

7:48

I look at like, is there a

7:50

possibility of an exit? Can you get

7:52

another job? Do you have enough

7:54

savings? That if you quit, you know,

7:56

it be okay for few months for

7:58

you to look for something. else? I.

8:00

Would certainly true that anyone who is

8:02

in all stressed or that

8:05

there has not at meeting at way out of,

8:07

as says, "You get support,

8:09

this can be professional support" Like person

8:12

like myself, like psychologist, that

8:14

it can also be reaching out, see your

8:16

social support networks that your family

8:19

and your friend.

8:23

You'll. Hear from someone who is impacted so much by

8:25

Burnout himself that attorneys experience

8:27

10:58

now here's my conversation with James kidding.

11:02

Hi, James, thank you so much for coming on the

11:04

news. Already Erica, thanks so much for having

11:06

me, how are you today? I'm doing well, I

11:08

appreciate that, so know you've described yourself

11:11

as a survivor of many toxic workplaces

11:14

I would love for you to briefly explain what

11:16

you went through and how that impacted

11:18

you.

11:18

Yeah. Well, the first one in particular was

11:21

an environment that was a high pressure sales

11:23

environment and ad sales girl I'm still

11:25

in advertising, but we had

11:27

weekly metrics and weekly goes. That we

11:29

had to meet and just being under constant

11:31

pressure is no way the have any

11:33

sort of healthy or holistic lifestyle for

11:35

after months and months and months of.

11:38

A culture that copes with that

11:40

stress by overeating and buy alcohol

11:42

by drugs that was the place that

11:44

I worked, didn't partake in any

11:46

of the drugs but the food. And alcohol

11:49

was a really big part of it, and then I spiraled

11:51

into anxiety and depression as a

11:53

way to cope and when I went to my age,

11:55

are at that? Time was there wasn't really

11:57

a try that have someone comes off as manager.

12:00

No one knew how to deal with it and basically told

12:02

me to go home and take nap, you

12:04

know, as if that were the solution,

12:06

so I just had to get out of that environment and over

12:08

to really save myself.

12:10

How did you first recognized the problem

12:12

because sometimes I wonder if people even realize

12:14

their burnt out or in front of a toxic?

12:16

Culture I just didn't feel right

12:18

and started notice my behavior change

12:20

over time, started to withdraw

12:23

from public events of from public

12:25

things and it religious accumulated

12:28

over time.

12:29

Some companies have tried to prevent burn out

12:31

by offering maybe more paid time off

12:33

what do you make of that strategy and is it a nice?

12:36

I need time or was actually a really good idea,

12:38

but it has to be frequent and regular breaks.

12:41

What's the other a device now for both leaders

12:43

to help prevent the burnout and to employees

12:46

who may be dealing with it?

12:47

Mental. Health burn out in over a wellness

12:50

is hybrid solution,

12:52

meaning that the person in the individual

12:54

has to want to change has

12:56

to know what healthy lifestyle is

12:58

for. Them, but then the organization

13:01

really has to reinforce that, and that's where

13:03

regular p. t. o. meetings

13:06

and meeting cadences, meeting schedules

13:08

and the infrastructure with in the business

13:11

is. Important to reinforce

13:13

the success for the format of

13:15

self help, so it takes both, and

13:18

in the third party, that is, that, leaders

13:20

and body it, if you see the CEO.

13:22

That takes the day off when everyone else takes

13:25

the day off or it matters to them, then

13:27

it's okay to matter to everyone else.

13:29

It's common for people to say, oh,

13:31

I don't want to go into work tomorrow, would love to

13:33

just kind of hear your take again why you think

13:35

worker or burn out has gotten more attention and become

13:38

the.

13:38

More of a concern now, worker

13:40

burn out has been here, but the fact

13:42

that we all had to work from home for

13:45

eighteen months and we saw ourselves

13:47

on screen. No one was

13:49

used to staring at themselves for

13:51

this many hours across

13:54

the many days. The first

13:56

time people got to see themselves

13:58

as like, oh, my God. All

14:00

that I do is work if it was

14:02

in the office because you didn't have

14:04

that mirror in front of you at all times

14:07

it was happening, but it wasn't exacerbated

14:10

by literally. The mirror

14:12

effect of what teams

14:14

and zoom and online conferencing

14:17

has done.

14:18

The irony you us we've seen record numbers

14:20

of people quitting their jobs it's been called the

14:22

Great Resignations, how much do think Burnout

14:25

is playing a part nap?

14:26

Are? Now means different things to different people,

14:29

it's psychological, it's emotional, it's physical,

14:31

it's financial, it's a lot of things,

14:34

but Burnout is the contributor

14:36

to why they are leaving I. Mean people are

14:38

saying I will take unpaid leave,

14:40

don't even want the money just need

14:42

a break. Final thought or take away for

14:44

audio. There. are going to be some outliers

14:47

that courageous and bold enough to redesign

14:49

and restructure their business in

14:52

way that truly serves the people and

14:54

delivers prophet and the employers"

14:56

"Who are able to do that, I

14:58

think, will be a great talent magnet

15:01

for attracting talent and I think that

15:03

they'll make record profits when we

15:05

can get to that place" Or a think

15:07

we're gonna see better world

15:09

because working is pretty much

15:11

what we do in America, I mean, it's

15:14

seventy five percent of all of our

15:16

year is dedicated. To works,

15:18

think we'll see a better nation, better workplace

15:21

and better society offers reengineering

15:23

what worthless.

15:27

Thanks. To both of our gas for sharing their expertise,

15:29

be sure to tune in every weekday for our regular

15:31

episodes, we bring you the news and a quick ten

15:34

minute roundup that'll. Help you start your day will

15:36

great weekend.
