Welcome to the Peter King Podcast.

1:13

A trade deadline Peter King Podcast.

1:17

With my friend Miles Simmons from

1:19

NBC Sports. We're going to break down

1:21

exactly what happened as we

1:23

record this late

1:26

on Halloween night.

1:28

You know, I don't know about you Miles, but I'm not

1:30

really into Halloween. I think

1:33

Halloween has become a ridiculous

1:35

adult holiday when it should

1:37

be a fun little innocent

1:40

kids holiday. But we'll

1:42

save that rant for another day where

1:44

I don't sound like Clint Eastwood

1:47

in Gran Torino. And say,

1:50

get out of my driveway you adults.

1:53

I only want the kids.

1:55

Anyway, okay. We've moved

1:57

on from that. We're going to be joined later in the podcast.

2:00

by Cameron Bynum, the excellent

2:03

young safety of the Minnesota

2:05

Vikings. He's got a few other

2:07

things on his mind like hitting

2:10

his wife to join him in

2:12

Minnesota from the Philippines and

2:14

they have not been able to be a family

2:17

ever since they've been married in March

2:21

and so we're gonna get to that later in the pod

2:23

but Miles I

2:26

just have two very quick

2:28

observations and I want to get your leading

2:31

observation on this on

2:34

the trade deadline. Number one

2:38

not really as crazy as I

2:40

thought it would be. I thought we might

2:42

see two or three more

2:44

trades a little

2:47

bit bigger than they have been. I expected

2:49

Howie Roseman of the Eagles

2:51

to do a little bit more which

2:54

he didn't do but I think

2:56

one of the things that happened this year

2:59

is that there were a lot of teams that said

3:01

no we're not going to do it normally

3:03

less need. The Rams,

3:06

Kevin Demoff would say hey

3:08

we are open for business. They're

3:11

closed for business because they

3:13

want to start using the draft to build their team

3:15

and then the one other

3:17

observation I had

3:19

which

3:20

is an odd

3:23

thing to me that happened is

3:25

that the San Francisco 49ers

3:29

after spending a jillion

3:31

dollars to go get J. Von Hargrave

3:33

and thinking they have the best defensive front in football

3:36

felt the need to

3:38

go spend a third round draft choice

3:41

to go get Chase Young and

3:43

I said man what is wrong with

3:46

this picture anyway give

3:48

me your sort of overarching

3:51

thoughts about the deadline then

3:53

we're going to run down a few of these

3:56

deals and dissect them.

3:59

when I saw that it was San Francisco

4:02

that came out on top in the Chase Young

4:04

sweepstakes and kind of for the same

4:06

reason but also then it's like well I

4:08

guess I understand it because that's what they

4:11

do. They double down on what

4:13

their strengths are. Last year when they

4:15

go and they get Christian McCaffrey, nobody

4:17

thought that they needed Christian McCaffrey.

4:20

They didn't. They had an excellent run game. We

4:22

know they have an excellent run scheme

4:24

but what did they do? They went out and got

4:26

a guy that they considered to be one of

4:28

the best running backs in football and lo

4:30

and behold he scored a touchdown

4:32

in I think 17 straight games now.

4:34

So it's not like

4:35

they don't do that. They haven't shown

4:38

that they will do that in the past. So I guess when

4:40

you go and you get Chase Young and you add

4:42

him to a front that already has Nick Bosa

4:45

who's not

4:45

been quite Nick Bosa-like

4:48

you

4:48

know coming off of the holdout.

4:51

Maybe that has to do with not being in training camp.

4:53

Maybe it doesn't. I don't know but you know

4:55

you get that guy reunited with somebody

4:58

he played his college ball with and Chase

5:00

Young and you know running back the 2017-2018 Ohio State

5:02

Buckeyes. Maybe

5:05

that's going to be the thing that kind

5:08

of jolts the 49ers into

5:10

the second half of their season as they come off the

5:12

bye.

5:14

Yeah you know I

5:16

guess that you're

5:19

right and part of my reasoning

5:22

on the 49ers is look

5:24

they rented Chase Young for

5:28

nine weeks or whatever it is. I

5:30

think nine games. Okay so

5:33

they rented them and then you

5:37

know in a year and a half they'll

5:40

get either a third or fourth round

5:42

compensatory pick. So good

5:44

for them. They're playing the system

5:47

the right way but I just

5:49

keep wondering how

5:51

in the world did they not

5:53

have enough already? You

5:56

know I mean I just I

5:58

am mind boggling. why they

6:01

didn't have enough already. But

6:04

anyway, let me, as Werner Wolf

6:09

used to say about

6:12

things like this, let's go to

6:14

the videotape and let us

6:18

spend a moment just

6:21

basically going over every

6:24

trade that happened,

6:28

including a couple of trades that happened

6:31

a few days ago or within

6:33

the last week. We

6:36

basically had 10 trades in

6:39

the last week. We're going to start with

6:41

McColl Hardman going from

6:43

the New York Jets to Kansas City for

6:47

a cup of coffee. Cantabia

6:49

Street defensive tackle goes

6:52

from Philadelphia to Atlanta.

6:55

It basically was just a bit part,

6:57

a spare part for

6:59

the Philadelphia Eagles. Donovan

7:02

Peoples Jones, an interesting

7:05

trade. The wide receiver of Cleveland goes

7:07

to Detroit for a sixth round draft

7:09

choice. I kind of like this trade

7:12

for the Lions because I think

7:14

the Lions needed depth

7:17

at the receiver position, particularly

7:20

with Ammon Ross St. Brown

7:23

banged up even though every

7:25

game he's got eight catches

7:27

for 120. He seems

7:30

to be in a lot of pain most weeks.

7:32

So anyway, they helped that. A trade

7:35

that I thought was really, really

7:37

interesting. The most interesting trade of the

7:39

day. Rasool Douglas,

7:42

who I think is a C plus

7:45

cornerback. He's not great. He

7:47

is a usable NFL

7:49

cornerback and he got

7:52

traded along with a fifth round pick

7:54

from Green Bay to Buffalo.

7:57

Now Buffalo paid a three.

7:59

a lot.

8:01

But if Buffalo is Buffalo, basically

8:03

what they're doing is trading

8:05

the 90th pick in the draft

8:08

for a guy who's going to be a top three corner

8:11

in the last 10 weeks of the year. I'm

8:13

okay with that. He is

8:16

a big need piece

8:19

for the Buffalo Bills. Josh

8:21

Dobbs, this is

8:23

by far the oddest,

8:26

most interesting, weirdest trade.

8:29

Josh Dobbs, and you

8:31

know I tried to figure out today Miles,

8:35

it's only been two months since

8:37

Cleveland traded Josh

8:39

Dobbs to Arizona. Nobody paid

8:42

any attention. But then Josh Dobbs

8:44

becomes the starting quarterback of the Cardinals.

8:48

And we can say, oh he's just

8:50

been a guy. But he was the starting

8:53

quarterback of an NFL team for

8:55

two months. And now they

8:58

bench him. I think it was a

9:00

classic scapegoat thing in

9:02

Arizona. They bench him.

9:05

I love Josh Dobbs. And

9:07

they bench him in Minnesota now gets

9:09

them. And the Vikings, Miles,

9:12

they're four and four. They're not horrible. They've

9:15

got a little bit of a chance. So now Josh

9:18

Dobbs, probably not this week, but

9:20

soon he's going to be the quarterback

9:23

of the Minnesota Vikings. And

9:25

how weird is it that a guy gets traded

9:27

twice?

9:28

And

9:30

a team that he has been

9:32

with all through the offseason is

9:35

now going to get traded twice and

9:38

is going to play like eight or more games

9:41

for two different teams in the same year.

9:43

That's never happened in NFL history. And

9:47

we all know that the Titans

9:49

traded Kevin Byer to safety

9:52

to Philadelphia. That happened last week.

9:54

Really interesting trade, kind of a

9:56

fascinating trade.

9:58

But Philadelphia but the

9:59

the secondary by

10:02

getting him. Leonard Williams,

10:04

the defensive lineman, goes from the Giants

10:07

to Seattle. What really

10:09

interested me about this trade

10:13

is that the New York Giants,

10:15

even though I like Leonard Williams,

10:18

he's a good player, the Giants

10:20

can't sign all these guys. They're not good

10:23

enough to sign all these

10:25

guys for 18, 20, 22 million

10:28

bucks. They need draft

10:31

capital to take lesser

10:33

guys and to start building

10:35

with them. And then finally, Montez

10:38

Sweat and Chase Young. Montez Sweat

10:40

goes to Chicago from Minnesota

10:43

or from Washington

10:46

for a 2, and Chase

10:49

Young goes from Washington

10:51

to San Francisco for a 3. So, Miles, we run

10:56

everything down before

10:59

we take a break. I'm

11:01

really, really curious. As

11:04

you look at these trades, I

11:06

want you to tell me one

11:09

trade that when you saw it, maybe

11:12

your socks didn't get knocked off, but

11:16

you said, now that is a really, really

11:19

interesting move by

11:21

that team. What's one trade

11:23

that you really were interested

11:25

to see?

11:26

Well, I would say it's Montez Sweat going

11:29

from Washington to Chicago, because

11:31

if

11:32

you're Chicago and they made

11:34

a move similar to this last year where

11:36

they addressed a need with a

11:38

player that, you know, was on

11:41

the outs or whatever you want to call it with

11:43

their current team, right? So, you get Chase Claypool

11:45

going to the Bears for 2. And

11:48

that obviously did not work out, because

11:50

then Chase Claypool was traded to Miami for

11:52

a bucket of the equivalent of a bucket of balls, right?

11:55

Yeah. But

11:56

now you're in year two

11:59

of the Ryan

11:59

Paul polls Ryan polls,

12:02

excuse me, Matt Eberfluis era and

12:05

nothing is going very well right

12:07

now. They just got blasted out

12:09

here in Los Angeles. And I know

12:11

that, you know, the secret beige man was

12:14

the quarterback there and it's not Justin Fields,

12:16

but still like there's a lot that's

12:18

not going right. Man, did you

12:21

just say that I did. I didn't make

12:23

that up. I got that off television. But

12:25

I think that's from our fellow NBC

12:27

colleagues. So I, you know, that's not an original

12:30

thought by me. Most of my thoughts are not that original, but

12:32

I, you know, things are

12:34

not really going well for Chicago. And what

12:37

I don't really get is why you'd

12:39

use it to, for somebody who's

12:41

going to become a free agent and you

12:43

don't sign them to a contract extension

12:46

walking into the door. Like that to

12:48

me is something that either they need

12:50

to figure that out quickly, or it

12:52

doesn't necessarily make much sense because I mean,

12:55

I go back to my own experiences, right? So

12:57

I was covering the Rams on their, on their team

12:59

when I, when they traded a two for

13:01

Sammy Watkins in the middle of training

13:04

camp in 2017. And that

13:06

worked well because Sammy Watkins led that

13:08

team in touchdowns and the Rams

13:10

needed to get something established offensively

13:12

with Sean McVay and all this. But again, you're in year

13:15

one, that team ends up in the postseason

13:17

and yeah, they didn't resign Sammy Watkins,

13:19

but he left, did get a comp pick for him, et cetera. I

13:22

don't really get what the bears are doing

13:24

here because yeah, you may need an

13:27

edge rusher, but if you don't

13:29

resign this guy and you also don't make

13:31

the playoffs, which I mean, Peter,

13:33

I don't know how they're going to make the playoffs in their current

13:35

condition. Why are we

13:37

doing this? I

13:40

just, I don't know. I, the bears are a team

13:42

where I look at them and I'm like, I don't really know what you do well.

13:44

And maybe they'll start rushing the passer. Well, now

13:46

that they've added a guy in Montez sweat, I,

13:49

I'm not sure why you invested

13:51

two in somebody like this and you

13:53

don't sign him to an extension as he walks through

13:56

the door. They need to take care of that. Otherwise

13:58

this could really be something. where you

14:00

just you've totally wasted two

14:03

high second round picks in

14:05

a row because of Chase Claypool

14:08

and now with Montez Sweat.

14:10

Okay I'm going to give you the one

14:13

trade and I talked about it a second

14:15

ago but I'm going to give you the one

14:17

trade that I think

14:20

is going to be a significant

14:23

factor in the

14:25

pennant race down the stretch and

14:28

that is Buffalo acquiring Rasool

14:30

Douglas. Okay so

14:33

I'll tell you the reason why I really

14:35

like that trade okay

14:39

and it isn't that necessarily

14:41

that right

14:43

now that the that

14:46

pro football focus which

14:48

I think really does a good job it

14:50

isn't that pro football focus necessarily

14:53

had Rasool Douglas as the

14:56

18th best corner in football and

14:59

all that the Buffalo

15:01

Bills needed to do was

15:03

to trade a third round pick and let's just

15:06

say it's the 80th pick in

15:09

the draft it's going to be

15:11

somewhere 80, 85, 88 depending

15:14

on how far they go but let's just whatever

15:16

it is right it's

15:18

going to be a pick in the second

15:20

half of the third round and and

15:24

what they got for the second pick

15:26

in the second half of the third round

15:29

is on above every NFL

15:32

corner

15:34

and when you really

15:36

need a corner after the

15:38

loss of Tredevious White

15:41

you really need a corner and

15:43

a corner who's a feisty competitive

15:46

physical tough corner that's

15:48

what Rasool Douglas is and in

15:51

exchange essentially

15:53

what you did is you paid

15:56

that and you got back Douglas and

15:58

a five

15:59

from Green Bay. Now, Green

16:02

Bay stinks. So,

16:04

arguably, you're going to get

16:07

a pick in the top 10 picks

16:09

of the fifth round for a pick in

16:12

the bottom 10 picks of

16:14

the third round. So, it's

16:16

going to be 50 picks different, but whatever,

16:19

you still get the player. And

16:22

Rasul Douglas is well, well worth

16:24

it. Anyway, I like that

16:26

trade. I kind of like

16:28

it a lot. And I think it is going

16:30

to pay dividends for a Buffalo

16:33

defense that really needed a

16:35

great corner. Miles, when

16:38

we come back, we

16:40

are going to discuss the

16:42

players

16:43

who didn't move.

16:46

And I'm going to tell you why, in my opinion,

16:49

the Tennessee Titans made

16:51

a big, big mistake

16:55

in the last couple of days. We'll

16:57

be back right after this. Hey,

17:06

I'm Travis Kelsey, and I'm here to tell you

17:08

that you can get every touchdown from every

17:10

game on Sunday afternoons with NFL

17:16

you'll never miss a big moment. Hey, we

17:19

kind of shared a big moment learning about all this

17:21

great football on DirecTV, didn't we?

18:14

talk

18:18

about some of the moves that

18:21

weren't made that either

18:23

were mistakes in

18:26

not being made or just

18:29

somehow someway what that

18:32

guy didn't move and i'm going to tell you the

18:34

one that really

18:36

kind of bothered me and it it's

18:39

Derek Henry and look when

18:41

there is a somewhat legendary

18:44

player and and

18:47

i might argue that in the years

18:50

that the Tennessee Titans

18:52

have played

18:54

in Nashville you know in

18:56

Tennessee since moving from Houston

18:59

we maybe could argue that well maybe

19:01

Steve McNair is the greatest

19:04

player in franchise history or

19:06

maybe it's Eddie George and

19:09

you know they've had some really good

19:11

defensive players but in the

19:13

argument at least should

19:15

be a great running

19:18

back whose case one day will

19:21

be heard for the pro

19:23

football hall of fame and

19:25

that is Derek Henry so

19:27

Derek Henry turns 30 in

19:29

January he was not traded and

19:33

over the last five seasons Derek

19:36

Henry has averaged 105.9 yards per

19:38

game he is since 2019 easily easily

19:41

the best running

19:43

back in

19:48

football he's got a lot

19:51

left in the tank and

19:53

the Tennessee

19:55

Titans chose to hang

19:58

on to him rather than

20:00

with Derek Henry

20:04

looming to be a free

20:06

agent at the end of this season.

20:10

I'm sure Mike Drabel said, hey wait a second,

20:12

we got this young quarterback Will Levis, we

20:14

can make a run, I get it. But

20:17

sometimes you have to do the pragmatic

20:20

thing and the pragmatic thing

20:23

and this is a team that

20:25

in the draft in 2024 right

20:28

now, this is a rebuilding franchise.

20:31

This team has two pecs

20:34

in the top 110. They

20:38

need more than that. They could have

20:40

got one for Derek Henry,

20:42

they didn't do it. I think it

20:44

was a big mistake by

20:47

the Titans and they're young and I think

20:49

good general manager ran

20:51

Karthon. So Miles I've

20:53

given you my guide who

20:55

I thought it was a mistake not

20:58

to move. You got one?

21:00

Yeah, yeah Peter I'd go to Las Vegas

21:03

and talk about Devontae Adams because

21:06

look we all saw his

21:08

reactions on the sideline,

21:10

clear frustration, slamming the helmet

21:13

down and I mean Jimmy Garoppolo

21:16

is throwing the ball to Toledo when

21:18

Devontae Adams is in Detroit. I mean I just

21:21

when you're watching the game and you see something like

21:23

that you're like oh okay this

21:26

is Jimmy Garoppolo who we kind

21:28

of understand has been this

21:30

guy right? This is the Jimmy Garoppolo

21:33

that missed Emmanuel Sanders streaking

21:35

down the field wide open in the Super Bowl. So

21:38

we've seen this, this is who Jimmy Garoppolo

21:40

is but at the same time the

21:42

Raiders are kind of in the same situation as

21:44

the Bears where I look at them and I'm like well you're

21:46

a year and a half into this tenure right

21:48

between head coach Josh McDaniel and

21:51

general manager Dave Ziegler and what exactly

21:53

do they do well? I don't know that they

21:55

really do anything well except for they have

21:58

Max Crosby who plays defense

22:00

like his hair is on fire and is

22:02

clearly one of the better than the players. What an awesome football

22:05

player. Right? I mean, you look at him

22:07

and the effort he gives on

22:10

every single play and he barely

22:12

leaves the field. This guy is so

22:14

special. And so I see, you

22:16

know, the special qualities with Devontae Adams too.

22:18

And we've seen that for years and years and years. And I just

22:20

feel like if you're the Raiders,

22:23

you need to pick a direction. They

22:25

didn't go full young when even

22:27

though they drafted a McConnell, right? They

22:29

have Jimmy Garoppolo as their quarterback and

22:31

that's who they replaced Derek Carr with. And yeah,

22:34

you know, he's got the familiarity with Josh Daniels,

22:36

that that, uh, Josh dangle says that

22:38

was overplayed, you know, in the off season. Now,

22:41

I really think it's overplayed based on what we've

22:43

seen from Jimmy Garoppolo recently. And

22:45

I know he's been hurt, but still he was on

22:47

the field and he's got to play better than that. And

22:49

so I guess

22:51

if I'm the Raiders, I

22:52

think you needed to pick a direction

22:55

and just go there. Right. Right

22:57

now they're just in this nebulous

23:00

middle thing and it's like they're a blob

23:03

and they look awful against the Chicago

23:05

Bears. We

23:06

know are a bad

23:07

team. They look awful against the

23:09

Detroit lions, which that's a good team, but

23:12

still like you want to look at least competitive

23:14

and you want to be able to say what is it that they

23:16

do? Well, they could have gotten a really good

23:18

asset

23:19

for Devontae Adams. And I think it would

23:21

have been better for us as an audience. If we

23:23

could see Devontae Adams play in an offense

23:25

that is better suited to him and that

23:28

would at least be able to feature him properly

23:30

in January. And that's just something that nobody

23:32

is going to be able to see now.

23:34

Yeah. I guess my

23:37

point about that, and

23:39

I agree with you, Miles mostly,

23:43

but if you're the Raiders and,

23:47

and look, you paid a

23:49

lot for Devontae Adams,

23:51

both in terms of draft choice

23:54

capital and all that. And, but

23:57

there's one thing I do want to ask

23:59

you. based

24:01

on the Monday Night Game.

24:04

So

24:05

because my belief is

24:08

that everybody

24:11

is pointing the finger at Garoppolo and

24:13

Garoppolo clearly deserves

24:17

a significant amount of blame. But I guess

24:19

my question is Garoppolo

24:22

is running for his life. He

24:24

looks like Daniel Jones back there.

24:26

So even though he

24:31

made some lousy throws,

24:33

it's hard for me to look at those throws in

24:36

a vacuum. Give me your

24:38

thought about what

24:40

that means.

24:42

I think it means that the Raiders still have

24:44

trouble protecting the passer. And their

24:46

offensive line has done well in

24:49

terms of running the ball in the

24:50

past.

24:52

Maybe I should have said this guy instead of Devontae

24:55

Adams. Josh Jacobs. Why not

24:57

trade Josh Jacobs for an asset

25:00

when we know that he can run the ball effectively

25:03

and he's saying after the game last

25:05

night, you know, how do you fix

25:07

the

25:07

offense? Well, it's not my job. And frankly, it's

25:10

not. These are running back. He doesn't

25:12

make the

25:12

scheme. He takes the ball and he runs

25:14

with it and he runs hard. And we know he's going to run

25:16

hard. He always has. And I covered him day

25:18

to day in his rookie year. So I have no doubt

25:21

that that guy, when he's in the right situation,

25:23

can play very, very well. But again,

25:26

it's what do what

25:28

can you do to fix the

25:30

things that need fixing in the middle of the season?

25:33

And if you can't really address that, then all those

25:35

things become off season problems. And how do you

25:37

solve off season problems? Well, with assets.

25:40

So if you can pick up an asset for a Josh

25:42

Jacobs, who again, he's on an expiring contract

25:44

and maybe a franchise and again, maybe you don't, I don't

25:46

know. But that's something that you

25:48

can at least say, look, that we have a process

25:51

here. And if it's just, well,

25:53

we're going to collect some veterans, we're

25:55

going to have some guys that

25:57

can do some things,

25:58

you know, nobody wants.

25:59

because he got this big contract

26:02

extension and he's barely done anything

26:04

in the last couple of years. So that's a guy we're trying

26:06

to trade, but we can't trade. It's just like,

26:08

I understand

26:11

if you're a Raiders fan and you are discouraged

26:13

by what's going on right now, I get it. I

26:15

do. The only thing that you can say

26:17

is, well, they're going to ride these guys

26:19

through the rest of the year. And they do have three

26:22

wins. And there are a lot of teams in

26:24

the AFC with three and four wins. And

26:26

some of those teams are in the playoff picture right now. So

26:28

things can happen where this thing can

26:30

turn around, but it's got to click, right? And,

26:33

Peter, I just – I have not seen the evidence that

26:35

it's going to click for the Las Vegas

26:38

Raiders this year.

26:40

Yeah, this

26:43

is a troublesome question

26:46

to me because preparing

26:48

for this tonight, I said,

26:51

what's my opinion on Devontae Adams

26:54

not being traded? And,

26:56

Miles, I think I would disagree

26:59

with you, not vehemently, but

27:01

I'll disagree with you because I think

27:04

Devontae Adams is a great football

27:07

player. And if

27:10

they traded him, I

27:14

think because somebody has to inherit

27:16

the contract, if they traded

27:18

him, somebody is

27:21

going to have to trade at the very

27:23

least. You

27:25

know, a good second-round

27:27

pick. So I was trying

27:30

to think of teams

27:31

that –

27:32

teams that aren't that good but have

27:34

a good quarterback and

27:37

tried to think of teams, okay, so

27:40

who might that be? And so I circled

27:42

a couple in my trusty

27:45

NFL record and fact book because

27:47

I am – You have a hard copy? No,

27:50

I'm still a terrible

27:53

paper and pen guy. So

27:56

I wrote this down and

27:58

I just said, okay, for the team – that

28:00

might have done something like that.

28:03

I picked out four of them,

28:05

okay?

28:06

I picked out the New England Patriots

28:09

because I think Bill Belichick

28:11

would have happily

28:13

paid his two in 2024

28:17

for Davante Adams.

28:20

Because you have to ask yourself this question,

28:23

okay, what's somebody gonna pay? And

28:25

I just doubt anybody's paying a one for Davante

28:28

Adams right now. You got a two,

28:31

you know, a year and a half ago for

28:33

him and all players

28:36

are like cars when they come

28:38

off the new car lot. You

28:41

know, at some point they depreciate

28:43

a little bit. So I'm saying

28:46

you're gonna get a two. Now New England's pick,

28:49

it's gonna be in the top 40. So would

28:52

you take the 38th pick for

28:54

Davante Adams?

28:56

That's one team.

28:57

Here's a second team that I thought would have been

29:00

really interesting and I think would

29:02

have offered at least a

29:05

two for it. And that is,

29:09

and again you're gonna think this is nuts

29:11

to say this or to even consider it, and

29:13

that is the New York Giants. Because

29:16

to me the New York Giants right now

29:19

need star players, need

29:22

impact players that they just don't

29:24

have. So the Giants were another

29:26

one. Number three, the

29:29

other team that I thought would have been really

29:31

interesting and maybe very

29:34

interested in this is the Detroit Lions.

29:37

You say, well wait a second, wait a second, I'm

29:39

on Ross St. Brown and

29:42

obviously Jameson Williams,

29:44

they're okay at the position.

29:47

No.

29:48

You know what you are if you're a Detroit Lions?

29:50

You want to be great. So you know what you want

29:53

to do? You want to get three great

29:56

wide receivers. So that's the third

29:58

team. And then the last team,

30:00

The team that I think would have been

30:03

fascinating

30:04

to get this player. And

30:07

look, I know it's going to sound very strange

30:10

because I think a lot of people would

30:12

say, wait a minute, they've spent too much.

30:15

They've done too much all this stuff, and

30:18

they can't afford everything. It's

30:20

the Los Angeles Rams. The

30:23

Rams, I believe, at

30:26

some point in the next year

30:28

and a half, are going to have to look

30:30

at life without Cooper Cump. And

30:33

here is a guy who for a second

30:36

round pick, 43rd, 45th pick

30:38

in the draft, they

30:41

could have a guy. Now, I understand that

30:44

that's a lot of money to pay and a draft

30:46

pick, and they're trying to build up their picks.

30:49

I get it, but I do

30:51

think this. The Los

30:53

Angeles Rams are going

30:56

to need playmakers

30:59

over the next, I think Matthew Stafford's

31:01

going to last two more

31:04

years, maybe three,

31:06

maybe. But they need

31:09

playmakers, and I don't

31:11

know how much longer they're going to have Cooper Cump. And

31:14

just as the San Francisco 49ers

31:17

looked at buttressing

31:19

a position group of strengths, I

31:23

think it would be really, really great

31:26

if they would at least have considered that. But I

31:28

understand this, and look, if you're Josh

31:31

McDannough, if you're Dave Ziegler, I

31:33

don't think I would have made a trade because

31:36

making a trade of Devontae

31:39

Adams is totally waving

31:42

the white flag.

31:43

So, I've had the floor for a long time.

31:47

Talk me off the ledge, talk me out

31:49

of this, Miles. What do you think? would

32:00

have been something that people would have been like,

32:02

huh, but

32:03

the Houston Texans

32:05

now think about where Nick Cassario came from

32:07

and where Ziegler and McDaniels came

32:09

from, right? And I think what

32:12

we've seen from CJ Stroud so

32:14

far this year is extremely

32:17

encouraging in terms of where

32:19

it looks like he's going to end up

32:22

in terms of being a really good quarterback. And

32:24

I think, you know, they've got guys

32:27

that are good, that are solid.

32:29

I mean, I love Robert

32:31

Woods, I think he's a fantastic veteran, but nobody,

32:34

they don't have anybody on the level of a Devante

32:36

Adams. And I think if you could put him

32:39

in that offense and help the young

32:41

quarterback

32:41

grow that much more

32:43

than that could have made

32:45

you even more of one of those teams that's

32:47

going to be knock, knock, knocking on the door in December

32:51

and early January for one of those playoff

32:53

spots. Now, I mean, I know it's an NFC loss,

32:55

but losing to the Carolina Panthers on the

32:57

last play again, does not help you in

32:59

that endeavor. Yeah. Again, I think that that's

33:02

a team that when I watch them, I'm intrigued.

33:05

I love the way they play. I think they play really hard. They

33:07

just got to start finishing these games. I

33:09

believe that they will. And that's why

33:11

I thought the Devante Adams could have been one of those

33:13

pieces that could help them do that.

33:16

You know, Miles, last thing I would say, and

33:18

then we're going to get to our guests. Last thing I

33:20

would say is the

33:23

reason I kind of expected more to happen

33:26

this year is

33:28

that if you look at some of the general

33:31

managers and look, I think Howie

33:33

Roseman is good. He's aggressive. Joe

33:36

Shane is good. He's aggressive. They

33:39

both made trades. Brandon Bean

33:41

is good. He's aggressive. There's

33:43

a lot of teams out there. John Schneider,

33:46

same thing. There's a lot of teams

33:48

out there that weren't aggressive. And

33:51

I just think I would just remind

33:54

general managers that

33:56

a lot of teams, a lot

33:59

of teams. of teams need

34:01

help. And again,

34:03

we could talk about each team's

34:06

individual situation, but

34:08

I think the thing that would bother

34:10

me if I was a fan of

34:13

a few of these teams that

34:16

are in sort of the middle region,

34:18

the nether region, and

34:20

you mentioned one, Houston. There's

34:24

a lot that we can do to get better. There's a lot

34:26

that we should do to get better.

34:29

So I was a little bit disappointed that I thought

34:31

it was a little bit light at the

34:33

deadline. I understand an

34:36

awful lot of teams want

34:38

to keep their guys and also they

34:41

want to keep their picks for

34:43

next year. So I get it. But

34:46

I do think that guys

34:48

like Derrick Henry, there's

34:52

a lot of guys who could have gone to me

34:54

who should have gone, but there

34:57

we go. Hey, I'm Travis Kelsey.

34:59

35:40

Miles, we're going to get to our guest now, Cameron

35:43

Bynum, safety of the Minnesota

35:45

Vikings who has been playing

35:47

really, really well on the field

35:50

and also has a pretty

35:52

serious issue off the field

35:55

that we are going to get to with him about

35:57

his family. So without.

35:59

further ado we're gonna get to Cameron

36:02

Bynum, the safety of

36:05

the Minnesota Vikings. So

36:08

happy to be joined on the podcast by

36:10

a guy who has

36:12

really been in the spotlight a little bit

36:14

the last few days. Cameron

36:16

Bynum and Cameron

36:19

obviously had a great game on Monday

36:21

night football against the 49ers, made

36:23

a huge play to

36:25

seal a Minnesota victory at

36:28

the end with an interception of Brock Purdy,

36:32

but it's really what happened

36:34

after the game, you

36:37

know, with Cam. He used

36:40

his opportunity with

36:43

an on-field interview after the game

36:45

to make an appeal

36:48

for his wife and I before we

36:50

start, Cameron, I

36:52

want to just explain this situation.

36:55

You grew up in California,

36:58

your mom is a third-generation

37:02

Filipino-American citizen

37:06

and last year you've become

37:08

a big fan of the Philippines over

37:11

the years, visited there and everything

37:14

and you met your wife LaLane,

37:21

sorry, and you were married

37:23

in March of this year but you've

37:26

been unable to get her a

37:29

tourist visa to get her over here

37:31

to the United States. You

37:33

have the Filipino president writing

37:36

a letter trying to get her this visa, you've

37:39

got both Minnesota

37:41

senators, Amy Klobuchar

37:43

and Tina Smith both advocating

37:47

and trying to expedite this visa process,

37:50

but so far no visa.

37:52

Do I have the story correct?

37:54

Yes, I'll accept the

37:56

son of the Philippine president, which is a congressman.

38:00

Sanjo Marcos, which is the son of

38:02

the president, also a congressman out

38:04

there. But yes, he was able to write a letter.

38:07

And yeah, like I said, it got

38:09

denied, but nobody to blame.

38:12

But yes, everything else, correct.

38:14

So Cameron, let me just

38:16

ask you about what has

38:19

it been like for you to be

38:21

married, to be a newlywed,

38:25

and to not be able to see

38:27

your wife after you leave for the summer?

38:29

Now you come over to play

38:31

football for the season with the Vikings,

38:34

and she has to stay behind. What

38:36

is that like for your family?

38:38

It's extremely tough, especially being newlyweds.

38:41

And you get married knowing that you're

38:43

starting a new family within you and your

38:45

wife. And it's really

38:47

tough just knowing that she's over there in

38:49

a whole different country. The time difference is 13 hours.

38:53

So it makes life a lot

38:55

tougher than it should be, with her

38:57

not being able to come over here, especially with my schedule

39:00

and being so busy. Our time to talk is very

39:02

limited. And really, just

39:04

life is a lot harder. And you have to really map

39:06

out your day a lot better just to spend

39:09

time with your wife. And I feel as

39:11

if it's not, I wouldn't

39:13

say it's not fair. But for anybody that's especially

39:16

newlyweds, going a

39:18

few months married, and have to go the

39:21

whole football season without her being able to come

39:23

over here, it's tough and just makes

39:25

things a lot harder on both of us

39:27

being apart, especially during the rigorous

39:29

football season, how long it is

39:32

and how really busy it is. It

39:34

kind of makes another

39:36

obstacle, mental health. And just

39:39

your heart overall, just missing your wife and

39:41

her not being able to come over here, even

39:44

if there's an emergency, she still wouldn't be

39:46

able to come here. And if something happened

39:48

with her over there, there still wouldn't be a

39:51

way for me to go over there. So it just makes life

39:53

a lot tougher being apart for sure.

39:56

What is the reason that you have been given

39:58

that you have not been able to get? this

40:00

tourist visa that you're seeking?

40:03

With the tourist visa, they don't really give a reason.

40:06

But they're tough to get as it

40:08

is. So we've just been waiting

40:11

and being patient with that, knowing that

40:13

it's tough to get a tourist visa. So we haven't really got

40:15

a reason for that. And with the

40:17

spouse visa, it's just a waiting game

40:20

with that. And that's the reason we've reached

40:22

out to see if anybody has connections

40:24

that can help expedite it. And that's where I'm

40:27

also super grateful for the

40:29

center's office, being willing to hear

40:31

our case and really go

40:33

through and see what we can do about

40:36

it. But at the end of the day, that's the waiting

40:38

game. And that's the tough part, just knowing that

40:40

nobody should be away from their spouse for

40:43

this long. And the immigration process

40:45

is really tough.

40:46

I would have thought that once you

40:48

got married, that your

40:50

wife is and you

40:53

are inseparable. Whatever

40:55

country you're dealing with, whether it be

40:57

the Philippines, whatever, that

40:59

she ought to be able to come, that has to be the frustrating

41:02

part.

41:03

Yeah, that's what I thought, especially because

41:06

they say, OK, once you're married, you're good

41:08

to go. But I never knew me

41:10

personally just going through it. I was really naive.

41:13

And I didn't know that it can take up to two years. And

41:15

being two years without your spouse, no matter what

41:17

you do in life, whether you play football,

41:20

whether you're just whatever

41:22

you do in life, being away from your spouse

41:24

for that long, physically not being

41:26

able to see them. Faith time

41:28

isn't enough at times. And that's where

41:30

it's really been tough for us. And that's why I was blessed

41:33

to have the game that I did and be able

41:35

to speak out on it and seek

41:37

help, just because it's been really

41:39

tough and something that we've really been trying

41:41

to work hard and to get

41:44

and to find a solution for it.

41:46

Cameron, with all due respect to you

41:49

and how hard it must be for you,

41:52

and I'm not, what do I know? I don't

41:54

know you. I don't know the whole

41:56

situation. But I have

41:58

to think. you know, as

42:00

a football player, your life is

42:02

tremendously busy. You're

42:05

occupied, you know, from whatever,

42:07

seven in the morning till seven

42:09

or eight o'clock at night, you're really

42:12

tied up with your job.

42:15

And I have to think that

42:17

it's got to be tougher on

42:19

your wife because she's

42:22

just sitting there in this state of

42:24

limbo, not knowing

42:26

what the future holds. So tell

42:28

me what it is like for her and

42:32

how do you make it through these

42:34

moments when you're on FaceTime

42:36

but you're not together?

42:38

Yeah, like you said, it's really tough

42:40

just knowing that something can

42:42

change any second, but

42:45

it's also the tough part that nothing

42:47

has happened. So as far as like her,

42:49

she can't, I'm not saying she can't work, but like

42:51

with her job, if she

42:53

takes a job and then we get the visa, then

42:56

she'd have to quit or really

42:58

anything that can pop up. It's just tough

43:01

not knowing a timeline about anything.

43:04

Then even with my schedule of her

43:06

just waiting around for us to talk all day with

43:08

the time difference and me

43:11

coming home, I'm a type of guy that likes to do a lot

43:13

of extra work, a lot of extra film. So

43:16

me being busy until, like you said, eight o'clock,

43:19

nine at night, then I have to watch

43:21

my film, but then priority

43:24

is my wife. So I'm obviously going

43:26

to give her time and undivided attention.

43:28

So that leads to late nights

43:30

for me and the sacrifice

43:32

of it, which is all worth it, because at

43:35

the end of the day, my priority is her and

43:37

my marriage. So I've never put

43:39

that on the back burner. So having to stay

43:41

up later and having to really

43:44

carve in extra time to for us to

43:46

spend time together really makes

43:49

life a lot tougher and not complaining

43:51

about it at all. But that's the reality of the

43:53

situation is that everything becomes

43:55

a lot tougher having her there and

43:57

especially her and being in the waiting game. kind

44:00

of, she just sitting in the limbo, okay, what

44:02

do we do in the meantime? So she's picked

44:04

up a lot of hobbies, but nothing compares

44:07

to us being able to really

44:09

have a life here in the

44:11

United States during football season. And then after

44:14

football season, it's

44:16

fine. It can be on vacation,

44:18

I can go to the Philippines, whatever, but

44:21

the six, seven months of football

44:23

time and even,

44:25

well, we have three months left of season,

44:28

that's really what we're looking for

44:30

to hopefully get her here by the end.

44:33

I have two more questions for you. One,

44:36

tell us, what did

44:38

you do on your honeymoon after

44:40

you got married in March? I

44:43

think that says something about both you

44:45

and your wife.

44:46

Right, so we had, right after

44:48

our wedding, we had probably four hours,

44:52

cause our wedding got done late, we had four hours

44:54

to go back to the hotel, and the next morning, 5

44:56

a.m., we flew to

44:59

Leyte, an island in

45:01

the Philippines, to do our outreach with our foundation

45:04

to help all the typhoon victims, where their

45:06

homes got destroyed and they've been living in an

45:08

evacuation center, so we did an outreach there

45:11

as our honeymoon, cause we wanted to start our

45:14

marriage, serving other people and start

45:16

our marriage, really just giving back

45:18

to other people, and we

45:20

wanted to start and build that foundation in our marriage

45:22

to really have, like

45:25

I said, the foundation of putting other people first.

45:27

That was one thing that we decided on, to

45:29

make our honeymoon not only about

45:31

us, but about other people in our

45:34

family and our community. She's

45:36

been pivotal to that, and unfortunately,

45:38

we had to put all that on pause while she's

45:40

in the Philippines now, and I'm doing

45:43

things out here, and it's tough to

45:45

continue to do these community things into sad being

45:47

without her, because I know she wants to be here with

45:49

that. She's been a huge part, starting

45:52

the Bina Faith Foundation. She's

45:54

really the reason we started doing everything in the Philippines,

45:56

because originally, we partnered up with her

45:58

and her church. do it even

46:01

before we started our own family non-profit

46:03

so she's really been one of the biggest

46:05

parts to all of this giving

46:08

back so yeah honeymoon is really

46:10

the start of we want to start our

46:12

marriage off with just giving and serving

46:14

it.

46:15

That's really a cool thing. Last thing so

46:20

in the Monday night game against the 49ers

46:23

there's a lot of people who really don't

46:25

know who you are you're not a really

46:28

ultra famous football player yeah

46:31

fourth round pick out of Cal and

46:34

you really started to come on for the Niners.

46:36

In the last seven minutes

46:39

of this game you had two

46:41

interceptions you stopped two

46:43

drives of the 49ers. Describe

46:47

what that was like for you and

46:50

if you've ever had a better quarter

46:53

of football since you've

46:55

been playing football.

46:57

No I think that's for sure the best quarter I've

46:59

ever had especially the heightened

47:03

environment of it being a Monday night game

47:05

against the best team in the league

47:07

at the time and really

47:09

I feel like that was just a

47:12

testament of preparation and staying through

47:15

the process because I've

47:17

had chances this season to come down

47:19

with some interceptions and whether it

47:22

missed opportunities or anything

47:24

really and haven't come down to it down

47:26

with it but I in my mind I'm just like trust the

47:28

process the ball is gonna come back to me so

47:31

it was really just that that heightened sense

47:33

of awareness to make the plays that are

47:35

gonna come to me and don't miss any opportunities

47:38

so

47:39

opportunity was probably the word of

47:41

the night for me knowing that okay this

47:43

is a big game I haven't

47:46

thrown the ball my assignment is

47:48

in the middle of the field so I need to make

47:50

a play in the middle of the field because that's where the 49ers

47:53

like to attack so both of those

47:55

plays the ball came exactly where we

47:57

were thinking it would be and we're out

47:59

in a perfect game defense to do it and I just had to take

48:01

advantage of the opportunity on the field, get

48:03

the interceptions, have fun at the celebrations

48:06

and then take another opportunity to

48:09

speak in that interview. So I feel

48:11

like the whole day was just a perfect opportunity

48:13

for everything.

48:15

Cameron Bynum, listen, congratulations

48:18

on your success this year and

48:20

really I think so many football

48:23

fans join me in saying,

48:26

hey listen, our heart goes out to you, good luck

48:29

and really hope you get this visa quickly

48:31

so you can do what

48:34

families do, you can be together

48:36

and start your lives together. So good luck.

48:39

Yes, thank you. Thank you for giving me a platform to speak

48:41

on it. I appreciate that.

48:44

Our thanks to Cameron Bynum of

48:46

the Vikings and my

48:49

thanks as always to my

48:52

friend Miles Simmons and Miles. I'll

48:54

be headed off this week.

48:57

We record this on Tuesday night, tomorrow

49:01

on Wednesday I'll be flying to Frankfurt.

49:04

I'm really kind of looking forward not only to

49:06

the game

49:07

but I really want to explore what

49:10

the future is of

49:13

NFL football way,

49:16

way, way across the pond.

49:19

And you know to me I look at this, I

49:22

am probably a bigger fan than most

49:24

people of the NFL,

49:27

expanding to Europe. I know most people

49:29

think it's insane, I don't

49:33

but let me get

49:35

over there, let me see what's going on

49:38

and then when we get back next week

49:41

I'll tell you what I think and

49:43

I'm going to give you a full week to

49:46

make your case for arguing me out of

49:48

that and who knows, maybe I'll

49:51

be arguing myself out of it by then

49:53

but I look forward to talking to you

49:55

about it in a week and

49:57

by the way I

49:59

do.

50:00

want to say you're gonna be

50:02

up for combat duty because

50:04

you're gonna have to get up at six o'clock

50:07

out in LA Sunday to watch

50:09

this game which I assume you're

50:11

going to do.

50:12

Oh absolutely look I

50:15

wake up at five usually so you know the

50:18

early start on Sunday is not

50:20

that big of a deal especially because there are

50:22

a lot of F1 races that begin

50:24

at that time anyway so I get used

50:26

to that in the offseason and then we

50:28

can do this in the season I'm not gonna

50:30

be mad though when we're done with that

50:33

in a couple of weeks but Peter I do have one

50:35

request for you in Germany

50:38

and that is to find an excellent

50:40

half of Eisen and drink it for me.

50:43

Oh my god all I can say is I

50:46

cannot wait to

50:48

drink a half because

50:51

that's my beer I am the

50:53

lead beer guy in fact

50:55

my wife and I just went out to dinner tonight

50:59

in New York and

51:01

I had an alagash white which

51:03

I will challenge every half

51:07

of Eisen everyone in

51:09

the world with

51:11

alagash white it's one heck of

51:13

a beer from Portland Maine anyway

51:17

everyone watch it have a good week enjoy

51:20

a fantastic week of football

51:22

look some underrated game

51:25

Seattle at Baltimore two

51:27

division leaders at

51:30

one o'clock on Sunday Eastern

51:32

time that's a great game you

51:35

know it's a bummer I'm gonna miss

51:37

a bunch of really good games

51:40

you know in when I'm in Germany

51:43

this weekend but anyway you'll

51:45

see me on football night in America this weekend

51:48

I'll be reporting from Frankfurt

51:51

it'll be a fun time good time only be

51:53

had by all miles thanks and

51:55

we'll see you and we will see everybody

51:58

next week with a

51:59

new

51:59

another episode of the Peter

52:02

King podcast.
