Rachel and Our Lady are put together by the same Evangelist Matthew who refers the ferocity of Herod in killing all the babies of Bethlehem and in all that region, therefore in the vicinity of Rachel’s tomb. There is also a second and deeper bond between Rachel and Our Lady. As Rachel is the one who suffers and dies in giving birth to her second son, Benjamin, so Our Lady is the Woman of the Apocalypse who cried out in her “pangs of birth” (Rev. 12:1-3) to generate not her divine Son Jesus, born with no pain and labor, but her second born son, the beloved disciple St John at the foot of the Cross, and in him each one of us.
