Welcome to the Serial Killer

2:13

Podcast, the podcast dedicated to

2:15

serial killers. Who they

2:17

were, what they did, and how.

2:20

Episode 226. I

2:24

am your humble host, Thomas Rosaland

2:26

Weiburg Thun. And tonight

2:28

we continue the tale of the killer

2:31

cop, Gerard John

2:33

Shafer. Last

2:35

episode we ended with the

2:37

bottle picking man's gruesome discovery of

2:40

a killer's necropolis. Tonight,

2:43

we delve deeper into the

2:45

utter depravity of Shafer's

2:47

murderous reign. Enjoy.

4:53

Imagine if you will, then

4:55

Israel. You are standing

4:57

next to a stern-looking police officer.

5:00

He's wearing sunglasses, the

5:03

mirrored kind so that you can't

5:05

see his eyes, only your own

5:07

reflection. The

5:09

bush you are standing in is

5:12

not idyllic. Dry twigs,

5:15

plants that cut you if you brush

5:17

up against them, as some ragged-looking palm

5:19

trees rise up from

5:21

scattered mangrove, crushed

5:23

seashell, and gravel. The

5:26

sun is hot, the air

5:28

humid and smelling of something foul,

5:31

mixed with the smell of the sea. The

5:34

man is one of the

5:36

police officers dispatched to the crime scene after

5:39

the discovery made by the man and his

5:41

son while looking for aluminum

5:43

cans. His name

5:45

was Sergeant George Miller of

5:48

the SLCD. His

5:51

job was to photograph and

5:54

record any and all evidence as it

5:56

turned up. The following

5:58

report, written by Bae Miller

6:00

describes the crime scene with

6:03

graphic clarity. I

6:05

quote, The

6:07

undersigned officer was contacted at 2pm April 1,

6:09

1973 by dispatcher Rhys Parrish, in

6:15

reference to taking pictures of two

6:18

bodies in a wooded area located

6:20

just north of Blind Creek on

6:23

South A1A. Upon

6:25

arrival at the scene, I was

6:27

met by Detective Sergeant Hinton of

6:29

the Martin County Sheriff Department, who

6:32

proceeded to show me through the crime

6:34

scene. I started taking pictures

6:36

of an area located approximately 15

6:39

feet south of the dirt

6:41

road leading into the crime area. These

6:44

pictures show numerous articles of

6:46

women's clothing partially covered by

6:49

dead leaves. From

6:51

this area, we proceeded south into

6:53

a heavily wooded and undergrowth area.

6:57

Approximately 300 feet into the wooded area,

6:59

we came upon an open-type

7:02

grave. Several pictures

7:04

were taken of this, showing the

7:06

length, width and depth being measured

7:09

by Lt. Duval of the SLCDS

7:12

and Sergeant Bart Kanoff of

7:14

the Martin County Sheriff Department.

7:18

Also included in these pictures are two

7:20

shots of a white lace garment laying

7:23

at the south end of the open

7:25

grave. Partially covered by dead

7:27

leaves, one picture showed Sergeant

7:29

Kanoff measuring the distance from the south

7:31

end of the grave to the white

7:33

garment. The next

7:36

area that photographs were taken was located 39

7:38

feet 7 inches south of the grave.

7:42

These photographs show what was labeled

7:44

body number one. Body

7:47

number one photographs show the

7:49

pelvic bone area, the left leg

7:51

and foot bone, thorax and a

7:53

segment of a humerus bone. To

7:56

the southeast of body number one

7:58

at approximately 30 feet. degrees

8:01

and the footage from body number one being

8:03

22 feet 4 inches. Pictures

8:06

were taking of the complete upper

8:08

extremities of what was labeled upper

8:11

half of body number two. These

8:14

photographs include the upper extremities

8:16

covered with dead palm fronds

8:18

and also shows upper extremities

8:20

after being uncovered. In

8:22

these photographs can be seen

8:24

both arms and hands. One

8:27

hand, assumed to be the left hand

8:29

and arm, showing a piece of

8:31

material, red and white in color, tied

8:34

in a common knot around the wrist.

8:36

The next area I photographed was to

8:38

the southwest of body number one at

8:41

approximately 55 degrees, footage

8:43

being 25 feet 4 inches from body

8:46

number one. This was

8:48

labeled lower extremities of body number two. These

8:51

photographs show the lower extremities located next

8:53

to a palm tree with

8:55

the feet and legs to the south. Various

8:58

photographs were taken showing the

9:00

lower extremities of body number two. One

9:03

photograph shows charge and can of

9:05

holding up what appeared to be a belt

9:08

found lying between the tree and

9:10

lower extremities of body number two. Also

9:13

a photograph of lower extremities of body

9:15

number two shows two cloth

9:18

patches found on the right front

9:20

pant leg of lower extremities of body number

9:22

two. Patch number one being

9:25

a large cloth owl, red

9:27

and black in color, and patch number

9:29

two being a roadrunner patch with the

9:32

words beep beep and

9:34

emblem of roadrunner with the patch

9:36

having a white background trimmed in

9:38

yellow. Next area I

9:40

photographed was 21 feet

9:42

10 inches south of lower extremities of

9:45

body number two. This photograph

9:47

showing a complete right arm including

9:50

finger and hand bone. This

9:52

being labeled right arm for body number

9:54

one. On April 2 1973 this office

9:56

again returned to the area

10:00

to continue photographing any new evidence

10:02

found. At

10:05

approximately 10am, this same date,

10:07

Detective Sergeant Richardson found a

10:09

lower leg, 10 feet

10:12

to the east of body number one. This

10:14

was photographed showing how it was covered. On

10:17

April 3, 1973,

10:19

this office again returned to the

10:21

area to photograph any new evidence. This

10:24

same date, officers searching started finding

10:27

parts of a skull. Photographs

10:29

taken include looking from the south end of

10:32

the open grave to the area

10:34

where parts of the skull were found. It

10:37

also shows a view of looking

10:39

directly down into several teeth and

10:41

two vertebrae located 25 feet 5

10:44

inches from the north corner of

10:46

the open grave. Also

10:48

a photograph of a jawbone labeled

10:51

Jawbone number one with three teeth

10:53

in place. This was

10:55

found 28 feet from the northwest

10:57

corner of the grave. A

11:00

photograph was taken of what

11:02

appear to be human hair, reddish brown

11:04

in color. This being

11:06

23 feet 9 inches from the

11:08

northwest corner of the open grave. A

11:12

photograph is also included of another

11:14

section of a jawbone assumed to

11:16

be a front section containing

11:18

four teeth labeled Jawbone number

11:20

two. This was located 33 feet

11:24

3 inches from the northwest

11:26

corner of the open grave. More

11:28

information will be added to this report

11:31

as new evidence is turned up and

11:34

photographed. Signed, Sergeant George

11:36

Miller. End

11:38

quote. Dr.

11:42

H.L. Shofield was the

11:44

medical examiner for the

11:46

19th judicial circuit. Because

11:49

the murdered girls were suspected of

11:51

being Broward County residents and because

11:54

Dade County which is just south

11:56

of Broward had better

11:58

equipped forensic laboratories Dr.

12:00

Schofield sent remains to Dr.

12:02

Joe Davis in Miami. Dr.

12:05

Davis studied the skeletal remains

12:08

and one of his advisors,

12:10

Dr. Richard Suveron, who

12:12

was the only forensic dentist appointed by

12:15

the Justice Department of the United States

12:17

at that time, studied

12:19

the teeth and jaw bones that

12:21

had been discovered at crime scene.

12:24

In a few days, the medical

12:26

examiners had concluded their examinations

12:29

and called stone to relay

12:31

the results. Dr.

12:34

Suveron's discoveries were most valuable

12:37

in attaining the identification of

12:39

the bodies, as

12:42

dental records are as conclusive

12:44

as fingerprints to the trained

12:46

examiner. He positively

12:48

identified the bodies of those of

12:51

Susan Place and Georgia

12:53

Jessup and sent his

12:55

report to stone. Dr.

12:57

Davis also finalized his examination

13:00

and sent the following letter to stone. And

to another round of Boredroom or

31:33

31:36

agile coach Maria. Let's go. First

31:38

question. You spent two hours in

31:40

a team retro, but the only

31:42

input you've heard is Dave's. Boredroom

31:45

or Miroboard? Boredroom. In Miro, Dave

31:54

You need the team to act on feedback

fast, so you turn all those retro notes

31:58

into Jira tasks instantly. Massar,

34:00

whose body was found on Hutchinson

34:02

Island with both hands cut off,

34:05

is attributed to Schaeffer, though

34:07

none of his personal belongings were found

34:10

among Schaeffer's. And finally,

34:12

there is number 28, Kay

34:14

Prize, missing, a

34:16

girl whom Schaeffer was known to have

34:18

dated for some time shortly after his

34:21

divorce from his first wife. And

34:26

with that, we come to the end of

34:28

part 5, covering the

34:30

saga of the killer cop Schaeffer. Next

34:33

episode will continue his saga, so

34:36

as they say in the land of

radio, stay tuned.
