Approximately 700000 arthroscopic knee surgeries are done in America each year at a cost of about $5000 each or about 35 million annually. Interesting or sadly in a study at the University of Oslo, published in Science Daily three out of four of these individuals could avoid meniscus surgery with conservative therapies. In addition out of the additional total knee replacements done in the United States each year 1/3rd of patients are not appropriate candidates for this aggressive surgery, as published in the 2014 edition of Arthritis and Rheumatology.
So let’s look at conservative remedies for knee repair and reduction of pain.
A Stanford University study showed that a majority of our body cells replace every 7 to 10 years as researched by a molecular biologist Dr Jonas Frisen.
So the take home lesson is let’s improve the environment in the knee so that cells replicate in a healthier form. This is done through improving alignment by chiropractic manipulation, improved orthotic support to improve gait and foot alignment, reducing weight, rehabilitative exercise and therapies such as shock wave therapy and pulsed electromagnetic waves. New therapies such as Platelet Rich Plasma and Stem Cells, can also give added healing potential for the knee.
