Hi, it's Phoebe. If

0:04

you're a regular listener, you've probably

0:06

heard me talking about Criminal Plus recently.

0:09

It's a new way to listen to our shows without any ads.

0:12

That's criminal, this is love, and Phoebe reads

0:14

a mystery, ad-free. We

0:16

know this is something a lot of you have wanted for a

0:18

long time.

0:20

And when you sign up for Criminal Plus, you

0:23

also get bonus episodes.

0:26

In each one, I talk with Criminal co-creator

0:28

Lauren Spohr. We take your questions,

0:31

we tell stories, we talk with other producers

0:33

who help make the show, we have special guests

0:35

pop in, and we get off track

0:38

very easily. We're having

0:40

a lot of fun making these, and we thought

0:42

you might like to hear what they sound like. Hi,

0:45

this is Ginger Williams in Hays, Kansas.

0:48

And Phoebe, I love the podcast. I listen

0:50

to every episode.

0:52

And I love the way that you say .com

0:55

with an L in it, but I'm just wondering why

0:57

you say it that way. Thanks.

0:59

I love, well, first off, I love... I feel like that's kind of a burn. Okay,

1:04

but

1:06

can I just say I love the name Ginger? Yes,

1:11

I do too. And I don't think we hear the name Ginger enough.

1:14

This is like, it's one of those like

1:17

more of a comment than a question types of questions.

1:19

Why do you say it with an L? I love the way that

1:21

you do that. And also, why do you do that?

1:24

You know, I don't know that I'm doing

1:28

that is the honest answer

1:30

is that I never, it never occurred to me

1:32

that I was saying .com

1:37

like .calm until

1:39

someone pointed it out. And then a lot of people, Ginger,

1:42

you were not the first to ask this question. We

1:44

actually have a t-shirt that says,

1:46

I didn't

1:47

really like this idea for a t-shirt. I loved it.

1:50

Lauren designed it. It's a, it's a picture

1:52

on the front of the lemur

1:54

from our lemur episode. And

1:57

then the Quaalude lemur episode. And

1:59

then on the back, it says...

1:59

it's pronounced dot-calm.

2:02

I don't

2:04

think that's a very good idea for a shirt.

2:07

Everyone else seems to like it. Well, they're sold out so

2:09

I think the numbers speak for themselves. But

2:13

it was really amazing to me that when the first

2:15

person, you know, Ginger, that you

2:17

and many others are wondering

2:20

about dot-calm. A

2:22

lot of people have tweeted about it.

2:24

A lot of people. Say

2:27

dot-calm. Dot-calm. Dot-calm.

2:31

Go to Squarespace dot-calm. Go

2:34

to Squarespace dot-calm. Does it sound that

2:36

different to you? Dot-calm. Dot-calm. Uh... www.squarespace.com

2:41

I've heard you say this so many

2:43

times that it's almost like I'm in the

2:45

boiling water with you. Like I have no... Why

2:47

is the water boiling? I

2:49

can't really be objective about this either. But I think it's more

2:52

of like a box dot-calm. Am

2:56

I saying it with an L also now? Calm. You

2:58

know

2:58

the funniest thing... I use it calm. The funniest thing...

3:01

Should we hear it? Yeah, I'm sure we can. Let's

3:03

hear it. Let's hear it. One more time to try it for free. Go

3:06

to zippercruiter.com slash criminal. That's

3:09

blueapron.com slash criminal. By visiting

3:11

casper.com slash criminal. Go

3:15

to stamps.com, click on the microphone at

3:17

the top of the homepage and type in criminal. That's stamps.com, enter criminal.

3:21

Stamps.com. Never go to the post office

3:23

again. I think there's a little style to it. Remember

3:26

when we got the sponsor Calm? So

3:28

we had the sponsors Calm.com. I

3:31

really threw people off.

3:35

Someone tweeted that it makes them

3:37

feel squirmy. I mean

3:40

if that makes them feel squirmy. It gives them a tough

3:42

life. Yeah, I don't know how to help them. Ginger,

3:48

I'll try but I can't promise you

3:51

that I'll say it any differently than dot-calm.

3:56

Okay, so a few months ago, Phoebe

3:58

and I got an email. to our personal

4:01

Gmail accounts from this old friend of ours.

4:03

And she was like, I hope you're doing well.

4:06

And she writes about what she's doing. And

4:08

then I wrote her back. And I said, hi, I'm so glad

4:10

to hear from you. And then she writes

4:12

back. And so we're just goofing off back and forth.

4:14

And Phoebe is saying nothing. And I'm like, OK,

4:17

she must be busy. This is kind of unlike her. And then

4:19

finally, five days later, we get this

4:21

email that says, hi, I feel

4:25

compelled to tell you that I am not the Phoebe

4:27

judge, but merely a random farmer in Vermont

4:29

who is also named Phoebe judge and

4:32

happened to get to the Gmail first. I

4:34

don't want you to think the other Phoebe was ignoring you.

4:36

Thanks, Phoebe. And so I stare at this

4:39

email. And I look at who it's to. And

4:41

then I wrote her back. And I said, oh my

4:43

god, LOL, hi, Phoebe judge. Have

4:45

other people made this mistake? And she responded

4:48

and said, so many times, including

4:50

my own extended family. It's not

4:52

the most common name. Remember what that man said

4:54

years ago? Oh, this is so many

4:56

years ago. I was guest hosting

4:59

for this tour of the Cordon.

4:59

And I was young

5:02

and just starting out. And a man

5:04

wrote in and said, I just

5:06

want to let you know that Mr.

5:09

Phoebe Judd is doing a great

5:11

job.

5:12

Mr. Phoebe Judd is

5:14

doing a great job. So funny. But

5:17

I know I had that. Of course, I had no idea

5:20

that there was another Phoebe judge out there.

5:23

Hello. Hello. Is

5:26

this Phoebe? This is Lauren. Phoebe's here.

5:28

Is this Phoebe? This is Phoebe. Hi,

5:31

Phoebe. How are you?

5:32

I'm all right. How are you?

5:35

Well, we were just saying, what a thing that

5:38

we both have the same name. I

5:40

live in a very small town. And there actually

5:43

used to be another Phoebe judge in town.

5:46

No. So when it's a town of about 4,000

5:48

people, so

5:51

I'd go to go vote. And that Phoebe

5:53

grew up and went to school in the town. And I'd

5:55

be like, I'm Phoebe Judge. And they'd

5:57

be like, no, you're not. We know Phoebe and how

5:59

it's going to be. I was like, there's another one. You

6:02

gotta check. When I was in

6:04

college, there was a woman

6:06

who also was a Phoebe judge.

6:09

And so they refiled

6:11

all of my paperwork in her paperwork.

6:14

You're telling me that you know three

6:16

other Phoebe judges. Yes,

6:19

mutually exclusive Phoebe judges. Yes,

6:22

isn't that crazy? Yeah, I know a lot

6:24

of Phoebe judges. Now that's wild.

6:26

You know a lot of, I don't know any. You're

6:29

the first Phoebe judge I've ever met.

6:31

Really? Do you think you've gotten

6:33

a lot of emails intended for the

6:35

other Phoebe judges? I mean, it's so good

6:38

on you for getting the Gmail first. I

6:40

know you got it. I got it from somebody who

6:43

had like a good

6:44

friend at Google. So

6:48

I was one of the first beta testers.

6:51

So I had an in that way. I

6:54

think I've gotten email, yeah, like four

6:56

or five times

6:57

for you. I'm not email. I'm

7:00

not email. But I'm

7:02

always kind of like, is this spam? Are you actually

7:04

trying to, that's why I didn't

7:07

respond earlier in that email

7:09

chain. Cause I was like, I can't tell

7:11

if this is spam. I can't tell

7:13

if like what is actually happening. And

7:16

so then when somebody else wrote back,

7:18

then I was like, oh, I don't want to phoebe,

7:21

the other Phoebe judges good name by ignoring

7:24

her.

7:25

It's so polite. And it's also just so funny

7:27

because like the emails are

7:29

kind of personal. And so just the idea of

7:31

a stranger just sort of reading along is so

7:34

funny to me. And then finally having to speak up and

7:36

be like, pardon me, you have the wrong person

7:39

is so funny.

7:41

I felt so badly. So

7:43

you have had other people think that you're the

7:46

host of a podcast before.

7:48

Oh yeah, for sure. Yeah,

7:52

pretty much every time I start a new job,

7:54

they say, are you, are you the

7:57

Phoebe judge?

7:59

What's your real job? Well, right now I am

8:02

a flower farmer in

8:04

Vermont. Like I'm sitting

8:06

in an empty cargo van right now. So my voice

8:09

is not even remotely great

8:11

sounding, but like we have very distinctive

8:13

voices. I have to be like, close your eyes

8:16

and listen to me tell you, I am

8:18

not that Phoebe judge. And then they're like, oh

8:20

yeah, you're right. That's not you. Phoebe,

8:23

do you enjoy it when

8:26

people shorten your name? No.

8:29

That's right. That's the right answer.

8:31

No. And

8:34

I think just because of like, people

8:37

have been confusing me,

8:39

or confusing me for you or you for me for

8:41

about the same amount of time that I've been like

8:43

a post college adult. So I think we're

8:46

about the same age, but I

8:48

came up in the era of friends, right?

8:50

Yeah, exactly right. They do it all the time

8:52

to me too. Were you named after Lisa Kudrow? Oh

8:55

my God. Well, my sister's name is Rachel.

8:59

And so we have like the Phoebe and Rachel

9:01

duo, but people always want to call me

9:03

feeds. And I have to be like, no, that

9:06

is not my name. I feel

9:08

the same way. And when I look at them, when they say, were you named

9:10

after Lisa Kudrow? I think that would put

9:12

me probably around 18 years old.

9:15

You know,

9:17

the timing doesn't match up, but

9:20

I'm with you. I hate it when people shorten

9:22

my name.

9:23

Do you get the joke where people are like, you should

9:25

become a judge, you'd be judge, judge. Yes.

9:29

Well, I went to law school for like

9:31

two weeks. And then I was

9:33

like, I can't do this. But my sister

9:35

is a lawyer. And so she does

9:37

get that a lot because

9:40

her last name is also judge still. To

9:42

people, you know what, it's always so funny to me is

9:44

when people ask me to

9:46

spell my name, but they're not, I

9:48

guess our name, but they're not so confused,

9:51

the Phoebe, they're confused at the judge. So

9:53

they say, and I say, J-U-D-G-E,

9:57

no tricks. No tricks

9:59

there.

9:59

It's very hard to enunciate

10:02

in a way that people are like,

10:04

oh, right, like the courtroom. Okay.

10:07

I find it a hard name to get over the

10:09

phone, especially for people. Yes, because

10:11

they think you're saying Stevie.

10:13

Yes, Stevie Judd is what I get all

10:15

the time. Stevie Judd. Stevie

10:18

Judd. Okay, sure.

10:20

Like, yes, I've picked up a lot of

10:22

orders for Stevie Judd. You know,

10:24

I don't even, I don't correct anyone.

10:27

I mean, I just let them go with it.

10:28

You know, instead of saying no, it's O-E, it's

10:30

E-O, I just say, that's right, you got it. Good

10:32

try, I appreciate it.

10:35

Phoebe, do you listen to Criminal? No.

10:40

It kind

10:42

of feels like the nexus

10:45

of the universe. And so I try to be like,

10:47

that Phoebe Judd is having her life and

10:49

I'm having mine. And I don't have to

10:51

like

10:52

look in an infinite mirror of listening to

10:54

my own name come through the podcast.

10:57

Has anyone ever asked you to do an impression of her?

11:00

Yeah, every single time people are like, are you the

11:02

Stevie Judd? And then I have to be like, no, and they're like, can

11:04

you say it anyway? And I'm like, oh

11:06

my gosh. Okay. What

11:09

a nightmare, what a nightmare. Well,

11:12

someday I would love to see you in the

11:14

same space. You could trade jobs for a

11:16

day. I would love that.

11:18

Welcome to Stop By the Farm, any

11:20

time you're in Vermont. Phoebe,

11:23

thank you so much, Phoebe. Well, thank you so much. Yeah,
