We discussed Jupiter and Saturn will have their 2020 great conjunction on December 21, the day of the December solstice and aliens science fiction. Jupiter & Saturn- two worlds will be visibly closer in our sky than they've been since medieval times, in 1226. At their closest, Jupiter and Saturn will be only 0.1 degrees apart!
What makes this year’s spectacle so rare, then? It’s been nearly 400 years since the planets passed this close to each other in the sky, and nearly 800 years since the alignment of Saturn and Jupiter occurred at night, as it will for 2020, allowing nearly everyone around the world to witness this “great conjunction.”
The planets will be easy to see with the unaided eye by looking toward the southwest just after sunset.
While the closest approach happens on the 21st around 11 am PST (18 UTC), the planets will be sufficiently aligned to enjoy the view for a couple of days before and after. They could be easily found in the sky right after the sunset, about 30 degrees left and up from the Sun.
