We at Trinity have been on a journey together. From the intimacy of Maundy Thursday, we entered into the sorrow of Good Friday and then embraced the solemnity of the Easter Vigil. Now we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. We leave the darkness of sin’s dominion to join in the rousing chorus, “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:54-55).

Easter is the capstone of the Christian calendar. It was literally the dawn of new life. All four Gospels describe this pivotal moment when some of Jesus’ female disciples went to the tomb at the break of day. They came in the darkness, burdened by grief and crushed expectations. Then the sun edged over the horizon and revealed an empty tomb! After hearing the glorious news of Jesus’ resurrection, “they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell His disciples” (Matthew 28:8).

The first Easter service happened at sunrise. And because the first proclamation of “He is risen” happened at the first light of day, Christians have celebrated the Easter sunrise service for hundreds of years. Of all times, this year seems to be the moment for us to join in this practice of a sunrise service. He is risen and we are risen in Him!
