On August 1st 2015 at 1 12 a.m. A call to 999 Equivalent
2:30
of 911 was made on the line
2:32
was sugar stuff. She Quote
2:37
my sister-in-law can't breathe properly
2:39
unquote Ambulance
2:41
arrived to the home on Clara Street
2:44
at 1 31 a.m. Where
2:47
the paramedics were taken to sugar says room
2:49
a Woman
2:51
lay on the bed completely unconscious This
2:55
woman was a brain bottom a
2:57
she When asked
2:59
by the paramedics what had happened Chagovda
3:02
replied saying her sister-in-law had
3:04
stopped talking to anyone at
3:06
midnight and became
3:08
completely unresponsive To
3:10
this the paramedic asked why it took over an
3:13
hour for her to call for help She
3:16
then quickly changed her account and said um,
3:18
Breen became unresponsive around 1 a.m
3:23
She went on to add that I'm
3:25
green had been suffering from terrible headaches
3:27
for the past few days and
3:29
had spent most of her day in bed at
3:33
the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary
3:36
Umbreen was immediately put in
3:38
the intensive care unit or the
3:40
ICU where she was intubated
3:43
a CT
3:45
scan was performed in which
3:47
swelling was found on her
3:49
brain It wasn't immediately
3:52
clear as to what had caused the
3:54
swelling the next day
3:56
a procedure called a
3:58
spinal tap or lumbar
4:00
puncture was to be performed
4:03
to determine if there was an infection in
4:05
the brain. However, no
4:07
such infection was detected. At
4:11
the time of the spinal tap, doctors
4:13
noticed a severe burn on
4:15
Umbrine's lower back and
4:18
upon examination, doctors determined
4:20
that the burn had occurred approximately
4:22
5 to 7 days
4:25
before Umbrine was brought to the
4:27
hospital. The likely
4:30
cause was a corrosive substance.
4:34
Umbrine also had
4:36
anti-diabetic medication called
4:38
glimeparoid used to treat type
4:40
2 diabetes in
4:43
her system, although she was
4:45
not diabetic. When
4:47
Asfarshe, Umbrine's husband, was
4:50
asked by Dr. Jones about the burn
4:52
on her back, he said
4:54
he was aware of the headaches but
4:57
couldn't think of any reason why
4:59
she would have burns on her lower back. This
5:02
was reason enough for the doctors at
5:05
the infirmary to call the police.
5:09
It was determined that Umbrine
5:11
suffered burns not only to
5:14
her lower back but also her
5:16
bottom and her right
5:18
ear due to the corrosive substance,
5:21
along with sores all over her
5:23
body including her toes that
5:26
would indicate a period of
5:28
prolonged immobility. In
5:31
addition to this, investigators
5:33
believe that some stage,
5:36
one or more of the defendants had
5:39
removed her vomit and urine soiled
5:41
clothing, cleaned her
5:43
body and dressed her
5:45
and carried her into the sister-in-law's
5:47
bedroom. According
5:50
to the Daily Mail, due
5:52
to the catastrophic brain injury
5:54
that Umbrine developed from the
5:56
anti-diabetes drug, it was initially
5:59
thought that she would have been a would not survive
6:01
very long. However,
6:03
after ventilators were shut off
6:05
in the hospital, she began
6:07
to breathe for herself. It
6:10
has now been nine years
6:12
and Amreen is still holding on to
6:15
her life in a vegetative
6:17
state. She is
6:19
unaware of her environment, not
6:21
responsive to pain, has no
6:24
motor response, and will
6:26
never recover. She
6:28
is fed through a tube and
6:30
doctors say it is only a matter
6:33
of time when her body completely shuts
6:35
down for good, but this
6:37
could take decades. All
6:40
five of the family members were
6:42
charged with causing or allowing a
6:45
vulnerable adult to suffer
6:47
serious physical harm. This
6:50
offense carried a maximum sentence of
6:52
10 years imprisonment at
6:55
the time this took place. However,
6:57
it has since been increased to 14 years since.
7:01
Shaghufta, Shabnam, and
7:04
Askar were
7:06
all accused of doing an act intending
7:08
to pervert the course of justice, meaning
7:11
they prevented justice from being served
7:14
on Amreen. So
7:16
who are these five family members and
7:19
how did this all come to be? Amreen
7:23
Fatima and Askar Sheik had
7:26
an arranged marriage in
7:28
Pakistan in 2013. Askar
7:30
and his family, which included his
7:32
mom Shabnam Sheik, his
7:35
father Khaled Sheik, his
7:37
brother Saklan Sheik, and
7:39
his sister Shaghufta Sheik, all
7:42
lived in West Yorkshire in
7:44
the UK in the town of
7:47
Huddersfield. Amreen was
7:49
a teacher in Pakistan, a
7:52
happy-go-lucky, full-of-life sort of person.
7:55
People close to her said she would
7:57
light up a room. Umbreen
8:00
had seven siblings. It
8:03
wasn't until November 2014
8:06
when Umbreen arrived to the UK
8:08
to live in the same home
8:10
as Oscar and his family. According
8:14
to Robert Steen-Smith, it
8:17
was soon after Umbreen's arrival
8:19
that problems in the Sheikh
8:21
household began. Umbreen
8:24
wasn't meeting the expectations of her
8:26
husband and his family, and
8:29
soon after she was socially isolated.
8:32
She rarely left the house. She
8:35
was never allowed to leave alone. She
8:38
had no independent income, no
8:40
friends, and could barely speak any
8:42
English. Another source
8:44
reported that Oscar Sheikh was
8:46
threatened to kill Umbreen's family
8:49
members if they came to visit. According
8:53
to the lead's Crown Court
8:55
records, Shabnam, the
8:57
mother-in-law, had mentioned to her
8:59
cousin Nahila Sade that
9:02
in January 2015, which was
9:04
only two months after Umbreen
9:07
arrived to the UK, she
9:09
was caught smoking a cigarette with
9:12
quote, drugs in it, unquote.
9:15
When confronted by Shabnam, Umbreen
9:18
mentioned that it was a cigarette that her
9:20
husband Oscar had given to her. In
9:23
another instance, Shabnam complained
9:25
to her cousin Nahila about
9:27
Umbreen being smelly due to
9:30
body odor and not showering, for
9:33
which Nahila suggested buying shampoo,
9:36
deodorant, and body wash for
9:38
Umbreen because she was new to the
9:40
country and needed some education on personal
9:42
hygiene. Nahila
9:45
suggested giving Umbreen at least
9:47
six months to get used
9:49
to her new life, her new surroundings, and
9:51
of course, marriage itself. But
9:54
Shabnam wouldn't stop with the complaints. She
9:58
said Umbreen doesn't cook japati. or
10:00
roti for her husband and
10:02
doesn't do routine household chores.
10:06
So to this Nahila suggested sending her
10:08
back to Pakistan if the family is
10:10
unable to get along with her. Khaled
10:13
Shay, the father-in-law, also wanted
10:15
to send Umbrian back to
10:17
Pakistan but Shabnam refused.
10:21
In July of 2015, only a few weeks
10:24
before the 999 call, Umbrian's
10:27
family members asked police to do
10:29
a welfare check on her as
10:31
they were worried about her. The
10:34
West Yorkshire police officers said that
10:36
she was fit and well. However,
10:40
in court, the judge who
10:42
was presiding over the case named
10:44
Justice Lambert said, quote,
10:47
I attach little weight to that assessment
10:50
because Miss Shay spoke little
10:52
English and her father-in-law
10:54
was present during the visit, unquote.
10:58
At trial, the court
11:00
heard that any responsible
11:02
person in that household
11:05
would have been made aware of the
11:07
burn as it would have been agonizing
11:09
for Umbrian and medical treatment
11:12
should have been arranged for
11:15
immediately, quote, it
11:17
is inconceivable that
11:19
the household were unaware of it. Due
11:24
to the family not giving any evidence
11:26
in court, the court
11:28
was unable to determine when
11:30
the abuse had actually began. However,
11:33
from November 2014 when
11:36
Umbrian arrived to the UK, up
11:38
to August 2015 when the 999
11:41
call was made, that's not even
11:43
a full year. So the
11:45
abuse must have began either right
11:47
away or after the welfare
11:50
check was conducted in July of 2015. The
11:54
court was also not able to
11:56
determine who administered the corrosive substance
11:59
leaving a Umbrine in lasting pain. The
12:03
glemmeparoid was prescribed to Shabnam,
12:05
the mother-in-law, but
12:07
again the court was unable to
12:09
determine who force fed those pills
12:11
to Umbrine. The
12:14
judge determined that there was a
12:16
delay of two to three days
12:19
between when Umbrine fell unconscious
12:22
and when the 999 call was made. It
12:24
is also likely that during this
12:27
time is when Umbrine forcefully inhaled
12:29
and ingested the toxic fluids. A
12:32
neighbor of the Shake family said, I
12:36
was shocked because I just didn't realize
12:38
that there was another person living in
12:40
the house that we weren't aware of.
12:44
She went on to say that she didn't even
12:46
know Oscar had gotten married and
12:48
that the wife was living at the address
12:51
since November of 2014. The
12:54
assistant chief constable named
12:57
Damien Miller of West Yorkshire
12:59
Police said, West
13:02
Yorkshire Police has
13:04
worked hard in recent years
13:06
to improve its safeguarding of
13:08
vulnerable victims in domestic settings,
13:11
including those from minority communities.
13:15
So if this was a case, why did this
13:18
abuse even happen? If the
13:20
officers realized that the father-in-law was present
13:22
at the time of the wellness check,
13:25
why didn't they think to check
13:27
on Umbrine again at a time where she
13:30
would possibly be alone or unsupervised
13:32
in the house? After
13:35
10 hours of jury deliberation, four
13:38
out of five family members were found
13:41
guilty. Oscar
13:43
Shake, who is now 31, was
13:46
jailed for seven years and nine months, along
13:48
with his father Khaled and mother Shabnam.
13:52
His sister Shaguffa was given
13:54
an 18-month sentence suspended for
13:56
two years. Oscar
13:58
Shake's brother Saklanshe was
14:00
not found guilty on this charge, but
14:02
was given a six-month sentence
14:04
suspended for two years. All
14:07
five defendants were found guilty of
14:10
conspiracy to pervert the course of
14:12
justice. At
14:14
the time of sentencing, the judge said
14:16
the family would have definitely been made
14:19
aware of her pain, so
14:21
to say that she was experiencing headaches
14:23
and stopped talking to anyone didn't
14:25
make any sense. The
14:27
intention of the family was clear, to
14:30
instill the maximum amount of pain
14:32
and suffering on a brain without
14:35
directly killing her. And
14:37
all for what? Just because she
14:39
didn't live up to the ridiculous
14:42
expectations of the family? I'm curious
14:45
to know what our listeners think. Are
14:48
these sentences shared? When
14:50
I researched this case, I was
14:52
literally sick to my stomach. I
14:56
cannot believe how a human being
14:58
could torture another human being this way.
15:01
In my opinion, although Umbrain has
15:03
not passed away yet, she's
15:06
basically deceased because there
15:08
is no hope for recovery, and
15:10
she's been in a vegetative state for nine
15:13
years now. This,
15:15
in my opinion, warrants a
15:17
life imprisonment sentence for all
15:19
five of these scumbag family
15:21
members. Not even
15:24
one of the family members is innocent in
15:26
this. They all knew exactly
15:28
what they were doing and what the damage would
15:30
be. So hearing that the
15:32
sister and brother only got months of
15:34
imprisonment is extremely
15:36
infuriating. I
15:38
personally feel all five should be
15:41
put away for life and never
15:43
see the light of day again.
15:45
Since all this occurred,
15:47
Umbrain's father passed away and her
15:50
mother is very sick in Pakistan.
15:53
One of Umbrain's brothers is known
15:55
to have visited her in the
15:57
palliative care facility that Umbrain lived
15:59
in. For
16:01
this family, it's been an
16:03
ongoing tragedy day in, day
16:06
out, and they are
16:08
constantly reminded about the senseless
16:10
torture and pain Umbreen endured.
16:13
May Umbreen find peace, and
16:16
may a miracle happen in which she is
16:18
able to recover. Ami. If
16:22
you or anyone you know is
16:24
experiencing domestic violence in any shape
16:26
or form, please know
16:28
that there is help. A
16:30
person should never feel like there is
16:32
no way out because there always

is. I
