1:03

story today is a frightening one for the northeast

1:05

of England, not only for the

1:08

disturbing details, which we'll be touched

1:10

upon later, but for the

1:12

sheer normality that seems to be being played

1:14

out in a young couple's life as

1:16

they embarked upon a relationship together. Then

1:20

the way in which the comfortable normality

1:22

suddenly became something very different is

1:25

something we've spoken about many times before on

1:27

this podcast. Unfortunately, once again,

1:29

I must warn you that we

1:31

will be covering the stressing domestic abuse.

1:35

Before we start, let's quickly set some

6:01

away Newton had pushed her from her ledge, causing

6:04

her substantial injuries and

6:06

really leaving her fortunate to even

6:08

return home to the UK with her life. The

6:11

authorities became involved and Newton

6:13

was later convicted in his absence of

6:16

attempted murder by a Greek court, but

6:19

the relationship still continued. Physical

6:22

injuries by now were commonplace, usually

6:25

inflicted by Newton when he was drunk. On

6:28

one distressing occasion, Nicola's

6:30

mum found her at home tied up in her bedroom

6:33

with a sock stuffed into her mouth. Through

6:36

sobs of despair she told her mum it was

6:38

her boyfriend who had degraded her in this fashion.

6:42

As she physically shook and trembled

6:44

in fear, the pair

6:46

simply cuddled until Nicola was able

6:48

to gain back some sort of peace of

6:50

mind. Even

6:53

at this point the relationship persisted as

6:55

Nicola was terrified about what

6:58

might happen should she try to end

7:00

it. The

7:02

turbulence that defined the relationship did not

7:04

ease and eventually, displaying

7:06

incredible bravery in the face of her fears,

7:09

Nicola did indeed decide to end things with

7:11

Stephen Newton. Following

7:14

the break up and as time moved on, Newton

7:16

slowly faded from the picture and

7:18

Nicola began to see another man. She

7:21

became pregnant and it seemed as

7:23

though her life had taken a happier and more

7:25

contented direction. But

7:28

sadly this newfound joy wasn't to last and

7:30

following the birth of her baby girl Lily,

7:33

the relationship founded and came to an end.

7:37

As could often be the case with coercive

7:39

and controlling partners, Stephen Newton

7:41

wasted no time in trying to win Nicola

7:43

back once again. In

7:45

time he managed to persuade her to give her

7:47

another chance, to which she agreed,

7:50

meaning that their relationship resumed once more.

7:54

But if Nicola had hoped that the man had changed

7:56

and things might be different this time around, she

7:59

was horrible. horribly mistaken.

8:03

In June 2008, Steven Newton was

8:05

arrested, following yet another

8:07

attack on the young mum. Nicola

8:10

was by now terrified of her partner,

8:12

as she hoped with this latest assault he

8:15

would be remanded in custody. But

8:17

this was not to be the case as Newton

8:19

was bailed by Newcastle Magistrates, but

8:21

with a condition attached that

8:23

he should not visit her flat in any

8:25

circumstances. When

8:28

police called Nicola to inform her of

8:30

his bailing, she was utterly

8:32

devastated. In flutted

8:34

tears and shaking in terror, Nicola's

8:36

mum Jeanette was able to see first hand

8:39

just how real her daughter's fears now were.

8:42

We were so shocked at this result she said,

8:45

we thought he'd be remanded in custody. This

8:48

time I really felt she

8:50

was scared of Steven. The

8:53

bail condition after all, well it was all

8:55

well and good I suppose, but there

8:57

was no real way of enforcing it. Nicola

9:00

remained, living in fear 24-7 that he may

9:03

appear at her

9:05

flat at any time, every noise

9:07

in the middle of the night. She thought it

9:09

was him and she

9:11

knew better than anybody just how violent he could

9:13

be. And now the young baby

9:15

in her flat too, the anxiety

9:17

level was ramped up further still.

9:20

At this

9:22

stage Newton had been uncertain of the

9:24

paternity of Nicola's baby, but

9:26

following this latest assault he be let

9:28

under no illusions that Lily was not

9:30

his. The truth being bluntly

9:33

told to him several times by

9:35

members of Nicola's family. On

9:38

the 18th of June 2008, Nicola's

9:41

statement to police included the following, I

9:44

felt terrified of Steven and I generally

9:46

think he would kill me if he's not stopped. I

9:49

will move away if necessary now for the baby and

9:52

I would like to get help from the council to

9:54

get rehoused because Steven will not

9:56

stop if he knows where I live. The

9:59

relation relationship with him was volatile

10:01

and violent, he is a possessive and

10:03

jealous personality. It

10:06

was all uneasily quiet until

10:08

the evening of 1st July 2008 when Stephen Newton broke the

10:13

conditions of his bail and appeared at

10:15

Nicola's flat. It's

10:18

unclear exactly what happened next but

10:20

what is known is that while

10:22

one-year-old Lily slept quietly in her bedroom,

10:25

Stephen Newton set out to kill Nicola.

10:29

With a pair of baby's tights, Newton

10:31

strangled Nicola, the phone inflicting

10:33

an 8-inch wound to the forward first

10:35

throat, which was more than

10:38

2 inches wide in places and

10:40

had been inflicted with six or

10:42

seven separate strikes. As

10:46

Nicola lay bleeding to death on the living

10:48

room floor, her attacker made contact with

10:50

the sister Kerry. It

10:52

was just after midnight when he sent her a text

10:55

message saying, I saw Tez

10:57

but couldn't let her get away with hurting you. She

11:02

further but unsent messages he also prepared

11:04

for Kerry and his other

11:07

sister Tracy which said, told you

11:09

she was not walking away this time. He

11:13

then phoned Tracy at 12.40am telling

11:15

her she needed to come to the flat for hanging up

11:18

the phone. When

11:20

she called him back he blurted out the horrible truth

11:22

what he had done and also

11:24

went on to tell her, I'm trying

11:26

to kill myself but I can't die. So

11:30

just after 1am on Wednesday 2nd July,

11:33

Tracy made a 9-9 call to

11:35

the emergency services and

11:37

relayed the information she'd so shockingly

11:39

received from her brother. A

11:43

heavy presence of 10 police cars were dispatched to

11:45

the flat. On

11:47

entering they were met by the size of

11:49

Stephen Newton sat on the sofa watching TV

11:52

to speak away from his victim's blood soaked

11:54

body. Nicola's

11:57

baby car Lily thankfully remained asleep in her

11:59

bedroom. oblivious to what had

12:01

been unfolding to Giles away from her. With

12:06

police discovering Nicola's body and Steven Newton in

12:08

the same flat, this wasn't

12:10

the sort of taste that required exhaustive

12:12

attempts to discover who and where the

12:14

murderer was. He had

12:16

sat there quite brazenly watching TV as Nicola

12:18

lay dead on the floor beside him. He

12:21

was charged with Nicola's murder and

12:24

appeared before Newcastle magistrates where

12:26

he accepted he had killed Nicola but

12:29

he denied murder on the grounds of provocation.

12:32

The provocation according to him being that Nicola had

12:34

in some way goaded him about

12:36

not being the father to her child. The

12:40

trial was set for Newcastle Crown Court in September

12:42

2009, a little over a

12:45

year after the murder. Whilst

12:48

Newton was this time remanded in custody until

12:50

the time of the trial, Nicola's

12:53

family had to somehow try and come to terms

12:55

with what had happened. It

12:58

wasn't just losing a daughter in these

13:00

most appalling circumstances but

13:02

it must have been even harder

13:04

by the fact that this man had very

13:06

recently been instructed by the court not

13:09

to visit Nicola's address yet

13:11

they must have known the

13:13

futility of such an arrangement and

13:16

how unlikely it would be that he would adhere to

13:18

such a condition. It's not

13:20

for me to rant and rave about

13:23

why he wasn't kept in custody, I know it's

13:25

not easy but the family they just

13:28

can't imagine how they must have felt any.

13:31

And their confidence in the judicial system

13:34

couldn't have been great ahead of the

13:36

trial. The jury

13:38

were faced with some horrendous details of

13:40

the attack. Prosecutor

13:43

Toby Hedworth QC did not shirt this,

13:46

announcing that Nicola had bled to death after

13:48

Newton had hacked into her net

13:50

multiple times. He said

13:53

the following None of the

13:55

major blood vessels were touched so the fatal

13:57

bleeding took several minutes to accumulate. Her

14:00

own daughter's tights had been wrapped around the

14:02

neck as part of the attack.

14:05

She had been strangled with those. Blood

14:07

on the tights suggests they were around her neck

14:09

when she was tucked. Bruising

14:12

to her face and head showed likely

14:14

blunt force impact injuries from

14:17

punches, kicks or stamps. Following

14:20

the attack, asserted the barrister, Newton

14:23

made some half-hearted attempts to kill himself with

14:25

a knife and he got in

14:27

a bath full of water covered in

14:29

his own and Nicola's blood. Back

14:33

in the dock listening to this, Newton

14:35

sat impassively. Another

14:39

key element to the trial was of course

14:41

the extent and duration of the abuse Nicola

14:43

had suffered his hands. The

14:46

Crown said the relationship was punctuated by

14:48

years of escalating violence and abuse during

14:51

a particularly sombre relationship. But

14:54

it was the evidence of one of Stephen

14:56

Newton's former partners that confirmed that

14:58

it had not just been Nicola who had

15:01

suffered at his bullying

15:03

hands. Claire

15:06

Curran, who had the misfortune of

15:08

experiencing Newton as her first proper

15:10

boyfriend, held the court. He

15:13

was a raving nutter. I was scared stiff of him.

15:16

He used to make me feel like I was nothing. There

15:19

were telltale signs if he was going to be violent.

15:21

It would be in his eyes and he

15:23

would crack his fingers and put his tongue between his

15:25

teeth. I always knew when it

15:27

was coming. I used to

15:29

try and juggle him like a piece of hot coal until

15:32

he calmed down. A

15:34

few months after they began going out together,

15:37

she had been returning home one day, having

15:39

been out of the house for a few hours. Once

15:42

home she found Newton foaming at the mouth

15:44

almost and demanding to know where she had

15:47

been. In a fit of

15:49

rage, he then headbutted her, knocking her

15:51

unconscious to the ground. On

15:54

another occasion, a couple of years into the

15:56

relationship, Claire told the court he'd

15:59

stabbed her in the face. the thigh of a screwdriver

16:01

because she'd accidentally disturbed the betting

16:04

slips. When

16:06

he hit me she said it was if

16:08

he was hitting a man, he causing black

16:10

eyes, bruises, pop noses, pop lips and lumps

16:12

and bumps. The violent

16:14

incidents have stuck in my mind no matter how

16:16

hard I try to bury them. This

16:20

first time betrayal of the accused from a former

16:23

partner wasn't only tremendously brave

16:25

from Claire but moreover helped

16:27

create an image to the course of

16:29

the true character of Steven

16:31

Newton. It also

16:33

helped to dispel Newton's own fanciful perception

16:35

that his actions toward Nicola that

16:38

night had come from a one-off explosion

16:40

of anger rather than

16:42

the reality which is a concerted campaign

16:45

of bullying, terror and violence.

16:49

He claimed in his own evidence he'd snapped

16:51

on the night of the murder after discovering

16:54

that he wasn't the father of Nicola's child.

16:57

He said, Nicola turned round

16:59

and said she's not yours, it's not my

17:01

fault, it's your fault as you are

17:03

not able to make kids you big mugs. That

17:06

was the first time I'd heard that from Nicola's mouth,

17:08

I just exploded. I grabbed hold of

17:11

her arms and put her on the floor. He

17:14

then claimed Nicola had reached for a Stanley knife and tried

17:16

to attack him with it. Newton said

17:18

he managed to overpower her and then the

17:20

next thing he remembered was Nicola

17:23

lying on the living room dead. Then

17:26

he told the court he cut his wrists and throats

17:29

and laying a bath of hot water in

17:31

an attempt to kill himself. Nicola,

17:34

Stanley and friends sat through all this

17:36

evidence in the public gallery. At

17:40

the conclusion of a three-week trial in

17:43

October 2009, Steven Newton learned his

17:45

fate and whether or not the

17:47

jury had believed him. The

17:50

members of the jury announced after five

17:52

hours of deliberation they found him

17:54

guilty of the murder of Nicola Morin. The

17:57

verdict drew gasps from a packed public gallery.

18:00

and members of Nichola's family ran out of

18:02

the courtroom to break the news to

18:05

waiting friends and family outside. In

18:08

passing a life sentence with a

18:10

minimum term of 15 years, only

18:13

15 years sounds pretty lenient to

18:15

me than what you think, the

18:17

judge spoke directly to Newton. You

18:20

attacked her, you struck her about the

18:22

head repeatedly, you strangled her with her

18:24

child's tights and while

18:26

she's unconscious, you repeatedly cut her

18:29

throat. She was

18:31

10 years younger than you and she was physically no

18:33

match for you, her daughter sat

18:35

nearby. It was a

18:38

troubled relationship, punctuated with

18:40

violence. It was obvious

18:42

that all around the relationship was doomed, you

18:45

couldn't live happily together, but you couldn't

18:47

live apart. I've read a

18:49

note from you today in which it was best remorse. I

18:52

saw nothing of that in the days

18:54

he spent the witness box during your trial. The

18:57

judge said he simply couldn't accept Newton's version

19:00

of events that he snapped after

19:02

Nichola blurted out that he was not

19:04

the father of her daughter, saying

19:06

this was something he already knew. And

19:10

earlier in the sentencing the judge touched upon

19:12

one of the most heartbreaking elements of the

19:14

case. Nichola's daughter

19:16

Lily would one day have to find the

19:18

means to try and come to

19:21

terms of her mum's violent death in

19:23

the knowledge that she was killed just yards from her.

19:27

Immediately after the sentencing Lily's grieving

19:29

grandparents shared just how the two-year-old

19:31

had helped the family in

19:33

their efforts to find some sort of peace following Nichola's

19:36

death. Jeanette and

19:38

Bobby, Nichola's parents, opened

19:40

their hearts to say how Lily had been

19:42

the terror strength to keep them going. The

19:45

grandparents were granted custody of Lily and

19:48

they spoke of the dread they felt when

19:50

the day did come when they'd have to tell her

19:52

what had happened to her mum. Lily

19:55

is the only thing that kept us going she got

19:57

us through this said Jeanette. But

20:00

what right did he have to take her away from

20:02

her mother? And how do you

20:04

explain to a young child what happened? He's

20:07

robbed Lily of her mum and the

20:09

way he took Nicola that night was horrific.

20:12

But it's these types of ongoing dilemmas which

20:14

of course confronts a breathing family in situations

20:17

like this. It's also

20:19

easy for the public to simply move on

20:21

once a murder trial is concluded

20:23

but for the family left

20:25

behind they must navigate their

20:28

way through unknown and such difficult

20:30

periods of their lives. Nicola's

20:33

parents said that in losing their daughter that

20:35

was bad enough but it

20:37

was heightened further by having to

20:39

listen to Newton's cruel lies during the trial.

20:43

Nicola's dad Bobby said he's scum,

20:45

an animal. For him to

20:47

say what he said about Nicola just makes it worse

20:49

for us. I think he actually

20:51

believes the lies he tells. He

20:54

has tried to turn it around saying

20:56

what he did to her she's done to him. He

20:58

has told light after light to try and wriggle out

21:00

of it. Nicola was as

21:02

soft as class. A

21:05

couple of years after Nicola's death her

21:07

parents were asked to participate in

21:10

a Northumbria police campaign to raise awareness

21:12

of domestic abuse. At

21:14

this time the figures were revealing a

21:17

staggering one in four women were experiencing

21:19

such domestic abuse and

21:21

every week two women were murdered by their

21:24

partners or ex-partners. It

21:26

takes some comprehending doesn't it? She

21:29

thought it was love, Nicola's mum Jeanette told

21:31

the campaign. To me if

21:34

someone hits you it's not love. I

21:36

don't think I'll ever understand why she kept going

21:38

back. My message to

21:40

anyone who finds themselves in a violent relationship

21:43

like Nicola did is to get out.

21:46

There's help out there for you but you

21:48

also have to help yourself. No

21:51

matter how hard the police and other agencies

21:53

try to protect people it's

21:55

also up to the individuals that take

21:57

themselves away from the situation they are in.

22:01

And perhaps it's here where the final word

22:03

in this story belongs. The

22:05

Brie family, who have made

22:07

the most stressful and soul-destroying times one could

22:10

possibly imagine, still try to

22:12

help others in similar situations to

22:14

which Nicola found herself in. We've

22:17

heard it so many times haven't we from

22:19

other families who've been through such dreadful events

22:22

and are trying to help others. There

22:24

can surely be no better legacy to emerge

22:26

from such an awful tragedy and

22:29

hopefully initiative like this can help

22:31

in bringing down those such

22:34

high figures relating to domestic

22:36

violence. And

22:38

of course their dignity stands in stark

22:40

contrast to weak cowardly men like Newton,

22:43

truly pathetic creatures. It

22:46

is suggested that education is the only way

22:48

to stop these attacks which keep

22:51

coming and spark calls for change. But

22:54

this change has yet to happen and

22:56

still so many women and some

22:58

men but predominantly women leave

23:00

in fear of their violent partners. There

23:04

is help available if you or someone you

23:06

know is suffering from domestic violence. One

23:09

such charity is Refuge and their

23:11

number is available 24 hours a

23:13
