CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH:  Hawkins was a minister, dentist, civil rights activist and the first African American to run for Governor in North Carolina.  In Part I, Hawkins provides insight into his background, college experiences and his introduction to civil rights.  He discusses: the 1943 Black mail carriers campaign; his involvement with Thurgood Marshall and Mary Church Terrell while a student at Howard; suing the Dental Society; housing discrimination; and the bombing of his home.  When discussing the  juxtaposition of Charlotte’s past with the potential future of the city, Hawkins states that his thesis is “Everything has changed, but nothing is different.”
