1:54

Chapter nine. A

1:56

life for a life. Part

2:00

two of

2:02

3.

2:27

We got about a block more and it'll be on

2:29

the rad.

2:30

I know where it is. Well,

2:32

either way, I have to escort you to the dorms.

2:35

Just keep your hands rugs and see them, contender.

2:39

I can't believe they let you keep that sword.

2:42

It was mine to begin with. Mhmm.

2:45

What does it matter now? Are I free

2:48

to go? Once you're done out processing,

2:51

there's still the last few couple of things to do,

2:53

you know, exit interviews and

2:54

such. He'll have to change and get ready

2:56

for those.

2:58

Can I be done with this? Not

3:00

much longer now.

3:02

Okay. Wait

3:05

up.

3:06

Who the hell is that? She doesn't

3:08

matter. Let's just get there.

3:13

Oh, it's you. You 2

3:15

to be here in Tacoma? You're

3:18

freaking did

3:18

it. I can't believe it. Look,

3:21

I'm really sorry about your friend. 2

3:23

put up a hell of a fight. I

3:26

wish things turned out differently, but

3:29

you did what you had

3:31

to and it's

3:31

over. Are

3:32

you supposed to be gone? Didn't they

3:34

pay you already? Get the fuck away

3:36

from me. I just wanna Do you have any

3:38

idea what you've done? You're

3:40

responsible for

3:41

this. Leave me the hell

3:43

alone.

3:45

I gotta agree. The contenders

3:47

no longer your concern move along.

3:50

No one asked you, Sue. Aren't

3:52

you miss his money back now? So

3:56

why are you still around here?

4:02

I don't know. You

4:19

got two hours in the dorms to get yourself

4:21

ready. Whatever.

4:24

Just want it over already. I'll

4:31

be back to escort you and the other winners

4:33

to the next event. See you then.

4:39

Wait. They're already back.

4:43

I was

4:43

wondering when you would get here.

4:47

No, none. Get off

4:49

of me. Back up.

4:51

Next, we what?

4:54

I'm so glad you're

4:56

okay.

4:56

Oh, I am far from

4:59

okay. You

5:00

know everything that happened? Oh,

5:02

I saw it

5:03

all. All of

5:04

it. There's

5:05

nothing I could do about Lisa. We

5:07

had a plan. She she decided to

5:09

change it.

5:11

She told me that

5:13

you were a protector. You

5:16

promised me. And I tried.

5:18

I did everything possible.

5:20

She just Well, she

5:22

does.

5:23

Died. How can

5:25

you put all of this on me?

5:27

You are field

5:28

trained. Spent years doing

5:31

it. Everything you prepared for

5:33

in in in this. What the hell could I've done

5:35

differently?

5:36

Do you know what I went through in

5:38

there? Well,

5:40

I'm going through now after losing

5:42

her like that. Yes. Yes.

5:44

I do. Before

5:49

before we were sending, you said

5:51

that I didn't know love. The

5:53

hell I didn't. I

5:56

loved her. For

5:58

the for the first time and

6:00

the longest time. I

6:02

felt like I had something real with someone.

6:06

And now now

6:08

it has gone. She's

6:11

she's gone. This place

6:15

took her away, not me.

6:18

Yeah.

6:19

If I had been in there, it would have been

6:21

different. You can't know

6:23

that. Yeah.

6:28

What

6:28

if that had been me? It

6:31

almost was.

6:33

Lisa came back to help me. What

6:36

if she

6:36

didn't? Would

6:39

you be yelling at her right now? Would

6:44

you even feel the same way if you never

6:46

saw me again? I

6:51

guess one have her now. Nick.

6:55

Nick.

6:57

I can

7:04

to this. I

7:06

just can't.

7:35

I think we lost them. The

7:38

infected could keep up. I

7:43

know. I'm exhausted too. I'm

7:50

kidding. Good demon.

7:54

We'd be sunk right now if it wasn't for you.

8:01

Is home much further? I

8:04

mean, it's gotta be around him somewhere.

8:09

No, but I have a pretty good idea.

8:11

We're just looking for the entrance. It's hidden in

8:14

all. Wait.

8:19

Is that a stable.

8:22

Please tell me that's the place Chuck talked about.

8:27

That's gotta be it. There's nothing else around

8:29

for miles. Come on,

8:31

demon. When let's go. Come on. We're

8:33

almost there. Did

8:39

I die? Trust me. I

8:41

know it doesn't look like much, but there's a lot

8:43

more to it. The

8:45

Atlas, it's meant to be

8:47

hidden. Time.

8:54

Yeah. Yeah. This is definitely it.

8:57

Here, you get off

8:59

first.

9:09

Dot dot. I'm

9:12

hungry

9:12

too. I think there should

9:14

be food in here. We just need to find

9:16

the entrance. No

9:25

shit. Here's the

9:30

elevator lift. It's under the head just like puck

9:33

said.

9:33

You gotta activate it

9:35

though. Should be a trigger around here. Look

9:37

for a way in. Talk to

9:40

us. I don't know. Like, a

9:42

hatch or lever or

9:44

a button. Dot?

9:57

Dot keypad. Dot?

10:03

A keypad shit.

10:07

Alright. I don't

10:09

know the code. Dot. I don't even

10:11

think Chuck did. He said they were changed

10:13

all the time, but they fixed

10:15

the table and the pad.

10:18

So that's something Shit.

10:38

I have no clue what it is. There's

10:41

power at least, but Done.

10:47

Damn it. I

10:50

thought this would have been hit, you

10:52

know. But

10:55

the only thing this place is useful for

10:57

now is just to get out of the sun.

11:00

Maybe wait till it gets darker.

11:02

At

11:04

least demon has some to eat.

11:05

We'll need him if we have any chance of

11:08

getting out of here now. Dye.

11:16

Dye. Dye.

11:18

Dye. Dye. Dye. Dye. Dye. Oh,

11:21

it's

11:22

called the Atlas.

11:23

It's an old missile silo.

11:26

Dye? No. No. No. Calm down. It's

11:28

not like that anymore. It's

11:30

very different now. At least

11:32

that's what I was told. There's a

11:34

bunch of converted rooms places to

11:37

grow food, gun range, movie

11:39

theater, anything you can imagine. It was

11:41

total, it was almost magical.

11:46

And my mother

11:48

used to live here. They

11:54

were right. There's

11:56

nothing out here. That's

11:58

why no one could ever escape PRIM.

12:03

I'm sorry, dot. I really

12:05

am. IIII

12:21

What? What are you saying?

12:24

Dot. Dot.

12:30

Tied, odd. If

12:34

all this wasn't hard enough, can't

12:36

even really talk to you. It's just Don't

12:44

die.

12:47

Yeah. Yeah. Thanks.

12:50

You're probably

12:52

right. We're gonna be

12:53

okay. I thought What what do

12:56

I do? You heard

12:58

something? Oh

13:04

my god. The cuts in your back, those

13:06

still hurt you?

13:08

Dot. What

13:11

did they make

13:13

you do?

13:15

Digging? That's what you did in the war

13:18

camps? Todd.

13:19

Did they know who you

13:21

were? But they

13:25

found out. God.

13:29

Jeez.

13:31

Look at you. That scar is all

13:33

over. Some of these

13:35

are old. Are

13:38

those from before? When

13:41

we were getting blood drawn, they said, you were

13:43

in some city. God.

13:45

What was he called? City

13:47

of lost souls or some shit?

13:50

Mhmm. How long

13:52

were you there for? Die

13:55

die.

13:55

Mhmm. You're rocking.

13:59

What? Mhmm. Oh,

14:03

baby since you were a baby.

14:05

A dot. Dot. Oh,

14:07

a little older? I

14:11

wonder you can't read or write, but at least your

14:13

shreds are working? Dot.

14:20

I'm sorry. I I just

14:24

That must have

14:24

been awful.

14:26

You were by yourself?

14:31

Mhmm. Living

14:31

alone in a city

14:34

filled with infected? Jesus.

14:37

And I thought I had

14:39

a bed. Tied.

14:41

Tied. Mhmm.

14:43

Oh, me as a

14:46

baby? Tied. I group

14:49

at Lake Matthews.

14:50

It's this

14:51

little town outside Westport's borders.

14:53

A ways out.

14:54

That's where people are processed before they're let

14:57

into the city state. My

15:02

mom raised me there. My

15:04

dad, he died

15:07

long before I even knew of them, but

15:13

they met here. Todd?

15:15

I know. It's

15:17

weird.

15:17

And again, it's a long story, but

15:19

I didn't know all of it until recently.

15:29

Damn. Her little got wet. Fuck.

15:35

We're still good. We're

15:38

still good. Bye.

15:40

Bye. My

15:43

mom left me this. A

15:45

note, sent a 2 before she

15:47

died. He's a

15:49

well, an old friend of mine,

15:52

I guess. Was here when my dad was

15:53

here. I snuck it

15:56

in my boot before the arena, be

15:58

damned if I let anyone else have

15:59

it. It's the

16:02

last thing I have left from her.

16:05

What

16:07

does it say? It

16:10

says, to Samuel v

16:12

puck,

16:12

I need to trusted

16:14

you, so I will too.

16:17

Help Alex become a man like his father.

16:21

That's it.

16:24

But I guess it says

16:26

everything. Growing up.

16:29

I never really thought my mom

16:31

cared, but also

16:34

I didn't know what she went through before.

16:37

Life hit her pretty

16:39

hard.

16:42

I'm sorry. This is nothing compared

16:44

to you and Dot. Dot.

16:47

Dot. I don't

16:49

know. Part

16:52

of me always felt like the better version of my mom

16:54

was left behind here at the

16:56

Atlas. That

17:00

was when she used to be happy, before

17:03

she became broken.

17:10

Thai.

17:10

I know. Who isn't broken

17:12

in some way anymore? The way

17:14

this world is? That's what it

17:16

does to you. Growing

17:18

up. I didn't understand that

17:22

or her.

17:23

Just got so angry. Maybe

17:28

she was really just trying to protect me from what

17:30

everything was, like outside our

17:32

home. Thanks.

17:39

Yeah. I'm fine, really.

17:45

I never talk about her. Maybe

17:48

it's easier if I tell someone who can't talk

17:50

back. Time. Yeah.

17:52

I mean that in a good way.

17:58

We were so close

18:00

to getting somewhere. Almost

18:03

felt like my mom wanted us to find this

18:04

place. I mean, demon led

18:07

us right it. Almost feels

18:10

like she's still here.

18:14

Die.

18:15

Hey, Damon. You know the

18:18

code? They give that to you?

18:21

I

18:22

suppose I could trial nine thousand nine

18:25

hundred and ninety nine combinations. Dot

18:27

dot dot.

18:28

Probably get locked out for sure if we

18:31

do that. This

18:36

place would have made it possible to go

18:38

back to prim. Do something about everything

18:40

we went through. Help the others.

18:42

I just

18:45

just really thought this was

18:47

it, you know? Right,

18:50

mom. What?

18:54

What? What

18:56

about the

18:56

note? Dot. I

18:59

don't understand you. What? Dot dot dot dot

19:01

dot dot dot dot 2 dot. Stop.

19:04

Stop. Stop. Okay. Don't tear it even

19:07

more. Already been

19:10

damaged enough.

19:14

What? What'd you say?

19:16

Two. To Samuel

19:18

V. Puck. I need it

19:20

trusted you. I don't

19:22

get it. Oh,

19:23

two. Wait.

19:26

You think that's

19:27

part of the code? Todd.

19:29

Samuel v

19:31

wait. V is in pucks middle name.

19:35

He said that my mom got his name wrong.

19:37

V could be a five. Times.

19:40

2. Sam, that could

19:42

be an s, so seven on the

19:44

pad, and puck is AP7

19:48

also. That'd be 2757.

19:56

Dut? Damn.

20:00

Thought we had something there. Maybe

20:03

there's something else we

20:05

missed.

20:05

At least you have

20:08

more words now. Number

20:10

two, can you say that again?

20:14

Shot. Damn. Really?

20:17

Gone already? We

20:19

can keep trying maybe eventually it'll

20:20

stick. You

20:21

died. No shit.

20:25

Back up. Back up. The code actually

20:27

worked. Just second for

20:29

the elevator.

20:40

So did we get

20:43

in?

20:43

Todd? What about demon?

20:46

Well, I guess

20:47

he wants to stay out here.

20:50

Mom did want me to

20:52

come here. This note

20:54

proves it. God.

20:57

Damn. I don't know

21:00

if I'm ready for this. Alright.

21:06

24:37

would still be here. There's

24:40

only one and I know would be able 2. And

24:43

I'm not even sure they're alive at this

24:45

point. What was it?

24:47

Twenty ten? It's been

24:49

almost seventeen years. Yeah.

25:03

This place has seen better days.

25:07

Dot. Dot.

25:13

Dot. It's

25:14

a parking garage. The

25:17

previous owner had a thing

25:18

for cars. Don't know

25:21

if the gas in these would have held out

25:23

this long, but If

25:25

they we give demon a rest. Enough

25:28

fuel, and we could even drive back

25:31

to Westport. This

25:35

place for sure has guns. I

25:37

could replace the stamped crossbow.

25:39

Hate this thing. Done.

25:46

Yeah. I think there might be food

25:49

too. But it

25:50

could be old. Pretty dark.

25:52

I wonder where the light

25:54

switch is. Done.

26:00

Jeez. Alright. Nice

26:02

work. Done.

26:07

I don't know. What the

26:09

hell is

26:10

that? It's

26:12

coming from inside here.

26:15

This was

26:21

the auto shop, I guess.

26:22

I think this would

26:25

have been where sheep. No.

26:27

Don't touch that.

26:29

Diet. Is that

26:33

mom? Hello,

26:36

Alex.

26:36

Oh my god.

26:39

Mom. If

26:39

you're hearing this, that means you've figured out

26:42

the message I sent. Well

26:44

done. I have

26:46

no

26:46

idea. If you'll ever come here, but I wanted to

26:48

give you the option if you needed a place

26:50

to

26:50

go. With all

26:52

the uncertainty in the world, this is one

26:54

of the few locations I knew to be

26:56

safe. When did she record this? You left

26:58

for training in Westport a few

27:00

days ago. So There you

27:02

go. Maybe this will end up being like

27:04

a graduation

27:04

gift. Lucky you.

27:07

I only came back here

27:09

to activate your code, add a few extra

27:11

security protocols, and

27:14

then will head back home to

27:16

Lake Matthews. She died before

27:17

my training was over. I almost

27:21

didn't finish because

27:23

of it. I'm

27:24

sorry for

27:26

one. I

27:30

know how hard it is to talk and

27:32

I have been the easiest to along with.

27:36

It's not fair. I

27:40

know. But when I look at

27:42

you, I

27:42

see pieces of the people that I

27:45

lost, your

27:48

father, I had

27:51

anita. I swear if

27:53

I didn't

27:55

see come out me, I wouldn't even think you were

27:58

mine. I'm sorry,

28:00

that's not

28:01

funny, but it's easier to

28:03

say to the cat than it is to

28:06

you. I guess

28:06

that's where I get it from.

28:08

Maybe

28:08

you'll never see my message. Maybe

28:11

this is just a huge waste of

28:13

time. I'm

28:13

here now, aren't I?

28:15

And you may see it long after I'm

28:16

gone, but

28:18

it's worth it if you do. I

28:19

don't know. If you ever do, I just want you to know

28:22

that I am very proud of

28:23

you.

28:23

You were becoming

28:24

every bit a man like your father was.

28:29

Alex.

28:29

I wish.

28:31

Oh, I

28:32

wish things could have been different.

28:37

That we hope could have been, I

28:39

don't know,

28:40

a family, whatever the definition of

28:42

that is anymore.

28:44

But one thing I have had to learn is

28:47

that so much of our lives is outside of our

28:49

control. Whatever

28:51

happens happens.

28:53

And I wish

28:54

that I was stronger in dealing with all

28:57

of that.

28:59

Whenever you

28:59

find this, if you

29:02

do,

29:03

know that I love you. You,

29:08

Alex, and I have always loved you. I love

29:10

you, mom. And even though I wasn't

29:12

always there for you, I will always be

29:15

with you.

29:25

Holex. Hey.

29:30

That's four words now. Time.

29:35

I have

29:36

to go. And

29:37

before someone finds out that I'm

29:39

here, Those books on the desk behind you, that is

29:42

every schematic and operating manual for the

29:44

entire facility. I made sure to

29:46

document everything in case anything

29:48

broke And

29:48

yes, believe me. It does and it

29:51

will.

29:52

I hope you

29:53

can make this place your own. Well,

29:58

unless she's still here. I

30:02

love you, Alex. Bye.

30:06

Can't believe it. Really didn't want

30:09

me to find the

30:09

Atlas, and we're here.

30:12

And I got to see her. It's

30:15

just God.

30:19

God. I guess this

30:21

places ours unless

30:25

that. She Oh,

30:30

her?

30:30

I guess my mom's referring

30:33

to me? Oh, shit. Gloria.

30:40

Who else would be

30:42

here? Now

30:45

mind telling me who the hell

30:48

you are and

30:50

how the fuck did you

30:52

get into my Atlas?

From The Podcast

We're Alive

Listen to the entire epic series, which follows Survivors in Los Angeles after the world has been turned upside down. It begins with “A Story of Survival” which spans from Chapters 1-48. Our survivors band together, fortify a safe haven known as the Tower, and discover that the Infected are far from the biggest threat they will have to face. The adventure continues with two mini-series:“Lockdown” - A small group of inmates and prison guards are trapped in the T-block at Twin Towers Jail. They are forced to work together and find a way to escape while the rest of the world ends around them.“Goldrush” - Set 17 years after the main events of “A Story of Survival”, this is a recollection story that describes the efforts of the four Soldiers as they attempt a side mission to retrieve a suspected stash of gold bullion. Our newest season is “We’re Alive: Descendants”:The story of survival continues; the fight is not over.18 years after the Outbreak, the world is starting to re-organize and rebuild, but many different forms of humanity are still struggling to survive in the aftermath. Nicholas Tink grew up in the shadow of his father- the late, great, Saul Tink. Little does he know that deep in the places where infected dwell, another descendant lies waiting. Content Warning: This podcast contains descriptions of graphic violence, sexual references, and strong language.
