Dr. Karen Wilson is a Clinical Neuropsychologist, the owner of West LA Neuropsychology, PC, and the founder of ChildNEXUS.com. She specializes in the assessment of neurodevelopmental disorders in children and adolescents, and she has extensive experience evaluating children, adolescents and young adults who present with learning, processing or social-emotional challenges. As a clinician, her goal is to use her in-depth understanding of brain-behavior relationships to help identify the causes of difficulties individuals are experiencing, and she utilizes comprehensive and evidence-based approaches to determine one’s unique neurocognitive profile, which includes the identification of strengths and weaknesses, in order to help her develop a treatment plan tailored to each child, adolescent or young adult.
She is the former Graduate Coordinator and Chair of the Department of Psychology at California State University, Dominguez Hills (retired), and she currently supervises interns and pre-doctoral neuropsychology trainees at UCLA. She is frequently invited to speak about brain development, assessment, learning differences, and social-emotional issues in children and adolescents. She has given a number of presentations at national conferences, and she has published articles in national journals.
Dr. Wilson joins me today to discuss her background as a pediatric neuropsychologist. She also tells us about her founders story and the her company, ChildNEXUS. Dr. Wilson’s passion for this arena and the children that are impacted is apparent in our discussion. She shares why she left academia to create this central location of information and resources for parents of children dealing with social-emotional challenges.
“It's also one of the reasons why I wanted to start child Nexus because what I was finding is that there was a disconnect between the science and all of this great information that was coming out about the neurobiology of dyslexia and ADHD, and what's happening in the brain and what we can do, what changes can be, can be can occur when you have specific interventions that target the neuroplasticity of the brain” - Dr. Karen Wilson
