0:07
Debate Club. Are you
0:09
a pop culture connoisseur with strong opinions? Join
0:12
the new home of the megafans, Pop Culture
0:14
Debate Club. Each week,
0:16
two pop culture aficionados battle it out
0:18
to convince host Aminatou So that their
0:20
opinion reigns supreme. Each
0:23
guest is a self-described expert in the
0:25
topic they're debating and they'll have to
0:27
prove it by winning Aminatou over. What
0:29
is the greatest sports movie of all time? Who
0:32
made the most delicious on-screen meal? Topics
0:35
like this lead to some fun, occasionally heated
0:37
banter, but don't worry, they're all still friends
0:39
in the end. After
0:41
you listen to this clip, search for Pop Culture Debate

You can also find a link in the show notes to take you

there. I'm
0:53
Aminatou So and I'm a writer who loves

Debate Club from Lemonada and the BBC.
1:00
We bring on some of the funniest, smartest folks
1:02
in the biz to go head to head over
1:05
TV, music and movies that we love. And
1:07
because I'm the judge, I get to choose the winner. So
1:16
welcome to our first episode. We
1:18
knew we needed to kick this season off with some
1:20
hot competition, so we have Karl Tart
1:22
and Lamar Woods debating the best sports
1:24
film of all time. Thanks
1:33
so much for joining us. Today we're
1:35
discussing what you both deem to
1:37
be the best sports film. Let's
1:40
meet our panelists. Joining me today is
1:42
star of the NBC series Grand Crew
1:44
and frequent comedy bang bang podcast cast
1:46
Karl Tart. Hi Karl. Hi. Also
1:49
with us is comedian actor musician
1:52
Lamar Woods. Lamar your latest
1:54
album is called Highly Sensitive Person. I
1:56
feel that. Welcome to the show. Hey,
1:59
what's up? Love, I mean, actually, how you doing? Thanks
2:01
for having me. So happy to be here. It's a
2:03
beautiful day. Before we get into our picks, I'd like
2:05
to get to know the both of you a little
2:07
bit. OK. I know that
2:09
you co-hosted a Gossip Girl recap podcast called
2:12
XOXO Gossip Kings. Can you tell me a
2:14
little bit about how that started? We
2:16
have been trying to figure out a podcast to do
2:19
together because we talk a lot of shit. And I
2:21
was like, oh, you know what would be really funny?
2:24
If we did a Gossip Girl watch and rewatch podcast. So
2:26
I'm watching in real time, and he had already seen
2:28
it. I just fell in love with it. I thought
2:30
it was such a good show. It definitely kept me,
2:33
you know, kept my spirits high during that pandemic. That
2:35
was a crazy time. It was a lot of Gossip
2:37
Girl for three years. Watched it in real time. I
2:39
committed to it. And I only got a couple of
2:41
spoilers. And I want to thank
2:43
everybody who listened and who kept me safe from
2:46
any type of big spoilers. Because
2:48
I finished the show, and I was just as
2:50
disappointed as everybody was in 2012. OK,
2:53
well, we're going to talk about sports today. I'm going to
2:55
tell you a little bit about
2:57
my relationship with sports. I am
2:59
African. I grew up in Africa and in
3:01
Europe. I'm a soccer girlie. I'm
3:03
a longtime, painful supporter of Manchester
3:05
United. So I've had, it's like
3:07
I know heartbreak. You know, I know,
3:09
like, have had some elating years and some
3:12
years where it's just, we're
3:14
going to cry today. But, and I try
3:16
to keep it in check because sometimes I'm like, you
3:18
know, like the sports fandom, it's like a little, it's
3:21
like one area in life where I'm like, wow, like things
3:23
are about to go off the rails. Like the friends are
3:26
about to fight. Somebody is about to go down here. Can
3:29
you tell me like what kind of sports
3:31
fan you are? Are you like, do you
3:33
think that you're chill? Are you a little psychotic?
3:35
Like be honest. I wouldn't say psychotic, but
3:37
I definitely am very anxious. I hate certain
3:39
players. And so when they're
3:41
being successful, I'm really upset. I'm
3:43
a big sports guy. I played all
3:46
the major American sports through throughout
3:48
my entire life. And
3:50
I played basketball in college. There's never a conversation
3:52
that goes by without me mentioning that. And I
3:54
will give it all up right now. I'll give
3:57
up my whole career to just get one
3:59
free throw. in the NBA game. But
4:02
regardless of that. They should do
4:04
that, like a free throw instead. Like how people do
4:06
the first pitch. They should let celebrities do it. Celebrities
4:08
shoot a free throw? They should do that. But they
4:10
should ask you how much you're willing to give up.
4:12
And it's like, you got to give your 401k to
4:14
the league. You got to, it's like, you
4:16
know, you're like, here's my child. You're
4:18
like, what are you going to mortgage in your
4:20
life? And then you get to do that. If
4:22
I'm just doing a ceremonial opening free throw, I'm
4:25
not giving them nothing. But if they're like, you
4:27
can suit up tonight, and we guarantee you four
4:29
minutes in the game, I would
4:31
give up quite a bit. And I know that's stupid. What team
4:33
are you suiting up for? The Clippers. I'm
4:35
a Clippers fan. Wow. So
4:38
you know pain and suffering too. Yeah, but hold
4:40
on now, because I wanted to, I wanted to
4:42
ask you about this Manchester United pain and suffering
4:44
thing. I'm not big on soccer. I can't say
4:46
that I am. So
4:49
sorry to all the international fans. I
4:51
actually was in Europe during a World Cup
4:53
one time. And I was being real obnoxious
4:55
about how bored I was. Talk
4:58
to me about this. I don't understand how you
5:00
can be bored by it. I was like, all
5:02
these feet pushing a ball forward. Like, what are
5:04
you talking about? What's boring as hell of a feet. All
5:07
this drama. Like, what are you even talking about? Listen, I
5:09
got a couple things to say about that. We're going to
5:11
be here for a long time. I'm not too. OK, great.
5:13
OK, we're here. I was being obnoxious about the World Cup.
5:15
The World Cup was actually exciting. If it's just 6 o'clock
5:18
in the morning and I'm watching, today
5:21
it's the Silly 9-8 versus the, I'm not
5:23
watching that. I ain't watching it. Why are
5:25
you watching a race horse? It's
5:28
just buying Munich versus. And you're coming on
5:30
30s, going out. What are you? It's like,
5:32
I got 25, 25, lady in the hat. Lady
5:35
in the hat, 25, 35,000. I'm
5:37
a little different, yeah. I kind of go
5:39
in and out of sports fandom. But I
5:42
think I like players more than I like teams. Like,
5:44
I really like Anthony Edwards. I like
5:46
watching that storyline and seeing how that plays
5:48
out. Or like, Jaylen Brunson. So I think
5:50
I'm just like, I really like
5:52
to get into the character. What's going on? They
5:54
were embarrassing me. We was watching the game the
5:57
other night. They was embarrassing me because him and
5:59
my other best and Phil, they're
6:01
two very level-headed dudes. And
6:03
I look up to them both quite a
6:05
bit. And so I'm sitting here just pissed
6:07
off at this game that has no bearing
6:09
on my life whatsoever. But it's truly raising
6:11
my blood pressure. And I just look at
6:13
them. And I
6:16
feel like I'm ruining the mood. I'm ruining the
6:18
mood because I'm just like, I hate the ride.
6:20
And they're just like sitting there, kind of sipping
6:22
on their margarita. And I'm like, I wish I
6:24
could just not care. Yeah. I have a theory
6:27
of social gender engineering that sports is one of
6:29
the only areas that we let men have big
6:31
feelings and you don't get punished for it. Yeah.
6:33
But I can see. I feel it happening. I
6:35
think part of my lack of emotional
6:38
reactions is just because I don't watch it enough.
6:40
I've been following probably this year more with
6:43
football and basketball more than I ever have. I
6:45
was in a bad mood the other day when the
6:47
Knicks lost. And I was kind of like, where's this? Why
6:50
am I sad? And I was like, oh, wait. I think
6:52
I wanted them to really win. And
6:54
I was like, oh, I was like feeling it. But I
6:56
think it takes like, Carl has been a fan of sports.
6:58
He's followed a clipper your whole life. That
7:02
is going to have a reaction when things
7:04
don't go well. So I do have a
7:06
relationship with sports. I just don't have that
7:08
fire that everyone else has. Carl,
7:10
can you tell me what film you chose today?
7:12
OK. The film I chose today is the 1997.
7:19
I should have Googled that before I came in here. But
7:21
I think I got it right. The
7:24
1997 Michael Jordan Warner
7:27
Brothers Outlet Space Jam. OK.
7:32
That was pretty close. You can leave
7:34
in my snafu. I don't mind. OK,
7:39
let's do it again. OK. I
7:41
chose the 1996 Warner
7:44
Brothers and Michael Jordan Outlet Space Jam.
7:47
And I know that from the top of the dome.
7:49
And this is not an edit. And keep
7:51
it like this.
