The Rich Young Ruler goes against the default thought process of our current culture. Jesus meant it when he told the young man that if he wanted to be perfect he’d have to separate from all his riches and take care of his neighbor. The Rich Young Ruler didn’t realize that Jesus was asking him to do what he had already done himself; to be willing to give up everything to follow God’s wisdom and not his own. He didn’t realize the Son of God had given up his glory, and didn’t even have a place to lay his head, and would ultimately lose the last thing He had; His life.
