1:17
we're here for more happier a
1:19
podcast where we get more happier
1:22
We are here for some weekend listening. We're
1:25
kicking back with a little bit of a
1:27
loose survive. Hey Elizabeth Hi Gretchen today We'll
1:29
talk about how excited we are for our
1:31
upcoming Hiking trip in
1:33
England with wilderness England plus I
1:35
have a big announcement so many
1:38

1:40

1:56
June 25th 2024
1:58
so It's
2:00
super fun to have a big sale
2:02
like this. Yay. Okay, but Lizeth, now
2:04
what is making us more happier? And
2:07
this time, I think the same thing
2:09
is making both of us more happier.
2:11
Gretsch, the thing that's making both of
2:13
us more happier is prepping for our
2:15
trip to England. Yeah, we're going. It's
2:17
happening. I know we both put it
2:20
on our 24 for 24 list and
2:22
we're actually making it happen. I
2:26
kind of can't believe it. I'm
2:28
still waiting for something to happen.
2:30
I know, I know. Yeah. Well, so
2:33
we're partnering with Wilderness England and, Elizabeth,
2:35
I'm really happy that we're doing this
2:37
with a guide. Oh, yeah. It's a
2:39
big trip and you had the whole
2:41
thing about comfort versus adventure and that
2:44
if somebody else is taking charge, then
2:46
you can lean more into the adventure.
2:48
And so I think both of us
2:50
were craving a big adventure and craving
2:52
a challenge someplace new, a
2:55
different country and this would
2:57
have been unthinkable. If we didn't have a guide and
3:00
a plan to join, we couldn't have
3:02
this kind of adventure. So this is
3:04
exciting that we're doing this. So if
3:06
anyone hasn't heard us talk about this
3:08
Gretsch, and we are going to the
3:10
country in England, we're going to the
3:12
Lake District and Northumberland. And
3:15
every day we will
3:17
take these epic long
3:19
English walks where we
3:21
see things and we
3:23
tramp through fields and
3:25
mud and it may
3:27
be raining some of the time. So there's a
3:29
lot of rain here involved. Yes,
3:32
but it's sort of taken over our
3:35
lives figuring out what do we need,
3:37
where to get it, what size.
3:39
I watched a YouTube video on how
3:42
to properly lace your hiking boots. Oh,
3:45
because I thought, you know, I bet
3:48
there's a trick to this and you know what
3:50
there is. So I'm sure the guide will be
3:52
like, hey, there's a better way to
3:54
lace up your hiking boots. But as I'm breaking
3:56
them in, I thought I might
3:58
as well try to have. them on in the
4:01
best possible way while I'm breaking them in.
4:03
Well, Gretsch, we need to have a side
4:05
conversation because I am at a loss
4:07
with my hiking boots. I have now
4:10
bought and returned the same boots three
4:12
times because I keep veering between a
4:14
nine and a nine and a half.
4:17
So I don't know what to do because they
4:19
say the hiking boots should be a half size
4:21
bigger. And yet it
4:24
feels so odd to me to have
4:26
the half size bigger that then I go back
4:29
to the nine, but then I read
4:31
it again, that it should be a half size bigger.
4:33
So I got the nine and a half. So right
4:35
now I have one size and another one I've ordered.
4:37
Well, and I need to make my decision. I am
4:39
no expert, but from what I heard when I bought
4:42
my hiking boots, and then also what I saw online
4:44
is one is it should
4:46
feel like you can wiggle your toe, but
4:48
your foot shouldn't slide around. Well, that would
4:50
go to the nine. Okay, and then how
4:52
thick is your sock? Because if it's a
4:54
little bit big, apparently you can do that
4:57
with your sock or maybe you could put
4:59
an insole in if you need to just have
5:01
it a little bit. I don't know if this is
5:03
terrible advice, but I did run into something about this.
5:05
Because I was worried that mine were too big because
5:08
they feel big. They're not as snug as I would
5:10
usually have it. But my feet are
5:12
not slipping around and your feet swell. So that's the other
5:14
thing is you want to have the room for the swelling
5:16
and you don't want the black toe from
5:18
it hitting the end. Yes, so Gretsch, that's
5:20
kind of the unfun part of prepping is
5:22
my back and forth on the hiking boots.
5:25
No, I feel your pain. It feels like
5:27
a very big commitment. That's the thing. It
5:29
is a big commitment, yes. But we're having
5:31
a great time thinking about it and fantasizing
5:33
about ourselves. Our father recommended Rick Steves' documentary.
5:36
He does all these sort of travel documentaries.
5:38
So I watched the Rick Steves' documentary. That
5:40
was interesting. I'll put a link to that
5:42
and I'll send you the link Elizabeth. It's
5:45
interesting. I was thinking about trying
5:47
to read books that get me in the
5:49
mood. And one book, because we're going to
5:51
Hadrian's Wall, I'm going to reread
5:53
The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliffe,
5:55
which is a children's book, which I've read
5:57
and I remember really enjoying it. If I'm
5:59
remembering, it is set at Hadrian's Wall. So I've
6:01
been sort of meaning to reread it anyway. And I
6:03
thought, okay, I'll make sure that I reread it before
6:05
we go. Because the more you know, the
6:07
more you notice. If you bring more to it, you get more
6:09
from it. So prep will pay
6:12
off. Yeah, if anyone has recommendations, novels
6:14
that we should read that take place
6:16
in this area. Well, the
6:18
Lake District is like famed in song
6:20
and story and poetry. So, yes. Yes,
6:22
Wordsworth, it's Wordsworth country. Yeah, comes up
6:24
a lot. One thing I think we
6:26
should do before we go is think
6:28
about what kind of big thoughts are
6:30
we going to have? Like, are we going
6:32
to do podcast planning? Are
6:35
we going to think about our lives? It
6:37
feels we need to do some major thinking.
6:39
Oh, well, yeah. Well, this is leading into
6:41
something I've been meaning to tell you. So,
6:44
okay, that will be coming up in a
6:46
minute. But yeah, Elizabeth, we're coming up on
6:48
our 500th episode. So
6:51
that's a catalyst for reflection. Yeah,
6:53
let's think about big thoughts, big conversations that
6:55
we want to have. While we're having this
6:58
cool adventure. It's going to be so fun.
7:00
Yeah, one thing I'm excited about too, is
7:02
we'll be with other people. Yes. And
7:05
I always love meeting people in
7:07
this sort of circumstance. You love
7:09
that. Elizabeth, you're so good at
7:11
that. You like serendipity in connection
7:13
and engagement. Yes, I just find
7:15
it fascinating to see, you know,
7:17
why is someone here? What's their
7:19
deal? Who are they with? But
7:21
this is one of the things why
7:23
I think you and Sarah like the happier in Hollywood
7:25
retreat so much, is that it is
7:28
that kind of thing. This is sort of a
7:30
different version of that, which you get so much
7:33
energy from. It's just getting to know somebody
7:35
all of a sudden, but very well, because
7:37
you're doing something together. Yes, it's just fun.
7:39
It is fun. It's a fun way to
7:41
engage with people that you wouldn't normally cross
7:43
paths with. So it kind of gets you
7:45
out of the grooves of your own life.
7:47
Yeah, I think it'll really feed our soul,
7:50
so to speak, to do this. I think
7:52
it will, and tire our feet, which
7:54
hopefully will be well shod by the time we
7:56
go. Yes, hopefully I
7:58
will make the right. decision. And
8:01
yes, because I need to start breaking these in. But
8:03
do you have like, do you have like a really
8:05
outdoorsy friend or you could just like drive over and
8:07
be like, please help me? That's a
8:09
good question. I didn't think about that. And
8:12
believe me, I've been grilling the people at
8:14
the store, but you know,
8:16
they're always like, it comes down to what
8:18
you decide in the end. And
8:20
I don't feel qualified to make this
8:22
decision. Exactly. I'm like, can't you just measure
8:25
my foot and measure the boot or like
8:27
put your thumb down on the cap
8:29
and just tell me? And they're like,
8:31
well, it's subjective. Yes. So
8:33
we'll have to have a whole
8:35
side conversation. Okay. Yes. All
8:38
right, Gretch. Well, you just mentioned there's something
8:40
you've been meaning to tell me and coming
8:42
up, we are going to find out what
8:44
that is. But first, this break. LinkedIn
8:53
isn't just a job board. LinkedIn helps
8:56
you hire professionals you can't find anywhere
8:58
else, even those who aren't actively searching
9:00
for a new job, but might be
9:02
open to the perfect role. In a
9:04
given month, over 70% of LinkedIn users
9:06
don't visit other leading job sites. So
9:09
if you're not looking on LinkedIn, you're
9:11
looking in the wrong place. On
9:13
LinkedIn, 86% of
9:15
small businesses get a qualified candidate within 24
9:18
hours. Hire professionals like a
9:20
professional on LinkedIn. I
9:23
now work with a team and I am
9:25
here to say that finding the right candidate
9:27
and hiring the right candidate is one of
9:30
the very biggest and most important challenges to
9:32
anyone who has a small business. LinkedIn
9:35
knows that small businesses are wearing so
9:37
many hats and might not have the
9:39
time or resources to hire. LinkedIn
9:42
is constantly finding ways to make
9:44
the process easier. Post

10:03
and hello to shorts and tees. Gretchen,
10:06
I am always on the hunt
10:08
for the perfect t-shirt and
10:11
I found it at Quince. So
10:14
well-priced, such good quality. I am
10:16
in love with the Slub Crew
10:19
Neck tee. I
10:21
have it in white, I'm getting it in
10:23
black, possibly multiples, I love
10:25
it so much. The
10:28
best part, all Quince items are priced 50 to 80%

10:57
Gretchen. All
10:59
right, Gretchen, what have you been meaning to tell
11:02
me? Well, okay, well speaking of big thoughts and
11:04
big conversations that we want to have over the
11:06
summer, I have been meaning to tell you that
11:08
I have decided that I
11:11
am going to do some sort
11:14
of project around what
11:16
I am rebranding as the open door
11:18
phase of life. So the first step
11:20
in this was saying, so my younger
11:22
daughter, Eleanor, we have her move-in date,
11:24
which is August 22nd. So
11:27
now that feels very real because now there is a date on the
11:29
calendar that's Eleanor, move in. I'm
11:31
wrapping my mind around that and I'm
11:33
just very excited to explore it. And
11:35
you know, for me, it's always research
11:38
is me-search. And this
11:40
is kind of like the happiness project where
11:42
I started thinking about it and talking to
11:44
people about it. And then the more I
11:46
talk to people about it and think about
11:48
it and read about it, hearing from everybody
11:50
about different metaphors for the empty nest, coming
11:52
up with the open door, thinking about what
11:54
did the open door mean generally, what did
11:56
it mean for me, what did it mean for other people? It's
11:59
just got me really excited. to go deeper into
12:01
this and make something bigger out of it,
12:03
not just a segment here and
12:05
there or like an article on my website,
12:07
but give myself the room to think it through and to
12:09
really explore it. I've been saying for years when this
12:11
time of life comes, Gretchen, you have to write about
12:13
it. Well, you are my sister to Sage,
12:15
Alyssa, so I have to say as I was thinking about
12:18
whether this was a good idea, I was thinking, well, you
12:20
know, Alyssa's has always been telling me that I should do
12:22
something with us. And you know me better than probably anybody,
12:24
so. Well, I mean, and I'm
12:26
interested selfishly, I want you to write about
12:29
this for me because my time will come
12:31
in four years. My
12:33
sister-in-law, Michelle and her
12:35
husband, Tim, they are now in
12:37
this phase and she's calling it
12:40
re-nesting because she's sort of
12:42
recreating the home in a new fashion, which I
12:44
thought was very poetic. Well, see, I'll write that
12:46
down and add it to my notes because that's
12:48
one of the things I'm really excited about is
12:51
like talking to people and how are they approaching
12:53
it? And you know me, I love a category.
12:55
I'm starting to see, it's like book versus tree,
12:57
that thing about how people think about their lives.
13:00
I'm starting to see different categories and how people
13:02
fit into it and how they approach it differently
13:04
and how you wanna frame it and change
13:06
it and how I wanna frame it and
13:08
change it. I just went to my reunion
13:10
and then a week later, Jamie's reunion. So
13:13
I was talking to a lot of people
13:15
who are my age exactly. So
13:17
I was asking people, how are you thinking
13:19
about this? And some of them were not
13:21
in this stage, they'd already gone through it
13:23
or they were coming up to it, but
13:26
a lot of people, it was right around.
13:28
And it was fascinating to hear people's reflections,
13:30
their challenges, how they thought about it. Here's
13:32
a real rain. It's just like everything. People
13:35
have really different perspectives and I
13:38
find it endlessly fascinating to
13:40
explore people's different attitudes
13:42
toward it. And I love a
13:44
catalyst for reflection. And sometimes it's
13:46
like January 1st or it's halfway day,
13:48
but sometimes it's a life stage. And
13:51
this is a funny life stage because it's like, at
13:53
least for me, there's actually a date on
13:55
which this happens. Sometimes transitions are subtle and
13:57
you only recognize them in hindsight or they...
13:59
fold over time, but at least
14:01
I can conceive of this as something that will
14:04
happen like in the space of
14:06
a few hours. Yeah, and one thing
14:08
I think is interesting is some people
14:10
look forward to this and they can't wait for
14:13
the day and they're just like, oh, yay,
14:15
freedom. Free bird. And
14:18
other people dread
14:20
it and are preparing to
14:22
be crying for
14:24
days and to be sad.
14:26
And so it's interesting, again,
14:28
to the reframing how
14:30
people feel differently about this. Okay, but
14:33
here's a question that I'm really curious
14:35
to explore. Are people good
14:37
at predicting their response? Because one of the
14:39
things they say in happiness generally is they
14:42
call it hedonic forecasting. How good are we
14:44
at anticipating what will or will not make
14:46
us happier? Like, do we do a good
14:48
job of that? And what the research shows
14:50
is no, we're not very good at that.
14:52
We're not very good at predicting what's gonna
14:55
influence our happiness and how. But
14:57
of course, what you expect often shapes what
14:59
you do experience and it's what you focus
15:01
your attention on. But it might be
15:03
that if you're anticipating that it's gonna be really hard,
15:05
you might really shore yourself up and take a lot
15:08
of steps that then make it
15:10
easier. Or if you anticipate that it's gonna be
15:12
great, you might be then surprised if it's harder
15:14
than you expect. Or maybe people are
15:16
good because this is something that they've been thinking
15:18
about and that they're familiar with. And
15:20
so anyway, that's one of the things that I'm really curious about, which is are
15:23
people's preconceptions of what they
15:25
will experience accurate? Now, probably a lot of
15:28
people are like me, where I'm like, it's
15:30
gonna be bittersweet. It's gonna be a mix
15:32
of things. I'm gonna have a lot of
15:34
emotions and they're probably gonna change
15:36
hour to hour, day to day for a while until
15:39
I settle into it. But maybe not.
15:41
I don't know. Well, you know, one thing mom
15:43
said to me, because years ago I asked her,
15:45
I was already thinking about this. So
15:48
I said, was it hard when I left?
15:50
Of course, we had such a gap
15:52
that she had a kid at home for a
15:54
lot longer once you were out of the house.
15:57
And I said, was it hard when you actually had...
16:00
that empty nest. And she said, I don't
16:02
know if I've told you this, she
16:04
said, well, you know, by the time
16:07
you left, you were already gone. Yeah,
16:09
I've heard that. And it's true. It's
16:11
like, she's like, you were already making
16:14
your own plans, doing your thing with
16:16
your friends. Yeah. So I thought that
16:18
was such an interesting insight that you're
16:21
kind of preparing for this before it
16:23
happens. And that's a good thing. Kids
16:25
need to start getting their independence before
16:28
they actually leave the house. Right. Well,
16:30
I have to say, because Eleanor took a gap year, we did
16:32
have this thing where she would leave for a long time, but
16:34
then she would come back for a while and then she would
16:36
leave. And so it felt like she was going and coming back.
16:39
But I do wonder if, and again, I
16:41
will find out, I wonder if psychologically it
16:43
will feel different because it's a major milestone
16:46
where, I don't
16:48
know, I'm going to be really curious. I'm going
16:50
to put that in my notes and sort of
16:53
be studying myself under the magnifying glass to see.
16:55
And it'll just be interesting to see how Jamie
16:57
feels. If you guys feel differently. It's going to
16:59
be very interesting to see how Jamie feels.
17:01
I could see him not spending a lot
17:03
of time thinking about it beforehand and then
17:06
it happened and him kind of having a
17:08
big reaction. I can too. So interesting. Okay.
17:10
So there's a project in the works. Great.
17:12
I haven't exactly decided what format that's going
17:14
to take. I always think about, oh, a
17:16
book, but maybe it won't be a book.
17:19
Maybe it'll be a different kind of format.
17:21
There's a lot of possibilities there, but I'm
17:23
excited. Me too. All right,
17:25
Gretch, what is our spotlight on a tool
17:27
this week? Well, summer has begun if you're
17:30
in the Northern Hemisphere. And if you would
17:32
like help designing your ideal summer in the
17:35
Happier app in the extremely popular
17:37
spin the wheel tool for June,
17:39
if you spin the wheel, you
17:41
get three fun prompts
17:43
per day to inspire summer plans. There's
17:45
still time, but this ends on July
17:47
1st. So there's a ton of time.
17:49
Summer is passing. It always goes faster
17:52
than we think. You can get the
17:54
app at the happier app.com
17:57
and you can use hashtag design your summer.
17:59
If. you have a picture
18:01
of your summer adventures. Elizabeth, we love seeing
18:03
people's summer adventures. Yes, we
18:05
do. And by the way, Gretch, I did
18:07
spin the wheel this morning and I got
18:10
Make a Five Senses Portrait of Summer, which
18:12
I love. That was so great.
18:14
I think everybody should do that. I did that.
18:16
I did that. I did it for summers past
18:18
and present. And it was so fun. In fact,
18:20
Elizabeth, I should show it to you because probably
18:22
a lot of them are gonna be, I'll let
18:24
you do your own and then we'll compare. Sounds
18:26
good. And Gretch, we all love to spin a
18:29
wheel. A wheel wants to spin, as Kevin
18:31
says in the office. Pam, a
18:33
wheel wants to spin. You
18:36
can always bring it back to the office, Gretch.
18:38
It is my superpower. All
18:41
right, coming up, there's something you've been meaning
18:43
to ask me, but first this break. homes.com
18:52
knows that when it comes to
18:54
home shopping, it's never just about
18:56
the house or condo. It's
18:58
about the home. And what makes
19:00
a home is more than just
19:02
the house or property. It's the
19:04
location and neighborhood. If
19:06
you have kids, it's also schools,
19:09
nearby parks, and transportation options. That's
19:11
why homes.com goes above and beyond
19:14
to bring home shoppers the in-depth
19:16
information they need to find the
19:18
right home. And when I say
19:20
in-depth, I'm talking deep.
19:23
Each listing features comprehensive information
19:26
about the neighborhood complete with
19:28
a video guide. They also
19:31
have details about local schools
19:33
with test scores, state rankings,
19:35
and student to teacher ratio.
19:38
They even have an agent directory
19:41
with the sales history of each
19:43
agent. So when it comes
19:45
to finding a home, not just a
19:47
house, this is everything you need to
19:50
know all in one place. homes.com,
19:52
we've done your homework.

19:57
As your kids get older, some...
19:59
things about parenting get easier. They
20:02
can make their own snacks and
20:04
make their bed and do their
20:06
laundry, but others don't. Like having
20:08
that conversation about money. The fact
20:10
is, kids won't really know how
20:12
to manage their money until they're
20:14
actually in charge of it. Greenlight
20:16
is a debit card and money
20:18
app made for families. Parents can
20:20
send money to their kids and
20:22
keep an eye on kids' spending
20:24
and saving, while kids and teens
20:26
build money confidence and lifelong financial
20:28
literacy skills. Jack has Greenlight, Gretchen, and
20:30
he loves it. If I had Greenlight when
20:33
we were young and I knew if I
20:35
mowed the lawn, mom and dad would put
20:37
money on my account, I for sure would
20:39
have mowed the lawn more happily. Millions
20:42
of parents and kids are learning
20:44
about money on Greenlight. It's the
20:46
easy, convenient way for parents to
20:49
raise financially smart kids and families
20:51
to navigate life together. Sign up

21:02
all belong outside. We're drawn to
21:04
nature, whether it's the recorded sounds of the
21:07
ocean we doze off to, or the succulents
21:09
that adorn our homes. Nature
21:11
makes all of our lives, well, better.
21:14
Despite all this, we often go about
21:16
our busy lives removed from it, but
21:18
the outdoors is closer than we realize. With

21:32
right, Gretch, we're back. What have you been
21:34
meaning to ask me? Okay, this is sort
21:37
of not a philosophical question, but it's sort
21:39
of a larger question, which is, I've
21:41
been thinking about the fact that I wish I had
21:44
something that I was
21:46
really interested in that I followed
21:48
that had like fun news. So
21:50
I'm thinking about the way Jamie
21:52
follows sports or the way you
21:54
follow Real Housewives, because there's always
21:57
something new to be interested in.
24:00
Well, when you were deep into your
24:02
Game of Thrones phase or Harry Potter
24:04
phase, that would have been a time.
24:06
Okay, so this is a great point,
24:08
okay? Because this is something you've connected
24:11
two dots for me here. Because
24:13
you know that I've said that one of the
24:15
things I wanna do is the next time there's
24:17
like a major cultural phenomenon that I think I
24:19
could be interested in, I should follow it in
24:21
real time. Yes. I should have
24:23
watched Succession the way you did, in real time.
24:26
I should have watched Mad Men, when everybody else
24:28
was watching Mad Men, instead of years
24:30
later the way that I did. Because looking back, I'm like,
24:32
there were all these blogs and podcasts and there was a
24:35
lot of discussion and I would have loved it but I
24:37
was out of step. So then it was
24:39
all over. And so I think you're right, I think
24:41
the next, and you helped me spot this,
24:43
for some reason, I just am not good
24:45
at staying abreast of things. And I should,
24:48
I wish there were something, well,
24:50
did I do that with Game of Thrones? I think
24:52
that I was more in step with. Well, you did
24:54
listen to Binge Mode. I love Binge Mode, but that's
24:56
a great example. That's why I love Binge Mode so
24:59
much. Exactly, that podcast. So that's
25:01
a really good idea. Maybe it's that I
25:03
can't make myself do it, but that I
25:05
could hop on an opportunity and not let
25:07
it pass. Or like Breaking
25:09
Bad and Better Call Saul. I
25:11
ended up loving those shows, but I
25:14
didn't participate in the culture of those
25:16
shows at the time. Well,
25:18
let me ask you this, you love
25:20
perfume. It may be on Facebook that
25:22
there are some amazing perfume, Facebook groups
25:24
that you would just enjoy checking out.
25:28
No, but so I'll tell you why this doesn't work
25:30
as well with reading and with perfume. Because
25:32
with perfume, it's very frustrating because the only
25:34
way you can experience a perfume is going
25:36
to a store that carries it and smelling
25:38
it. And so reading about perfume is very
25:40
tantalizing, but it's kind of annoying. And I
25:43
don't know why this isn't the same with
25:45
food because same thing with food. Maybe
25:47
it's because with food, you have an idea. You
25:49
know what carrots taste like or eating, but I
25:51
don't know what CK1 smells like unless I've smelled
25:53
it. And so it's actually kind of frustrating for
25:55
me because then I'm like writing down lists and
25:57
lists and lists of things that I wanna go.
